The Different Types of Autism Spectrum Disorders
Autism is a spectrum disorder as it does not relate to only one particular type of disorder. People with autism may behave differently. They may have communication, social or behavioural challenges. If you come across people with autism, you will notice that each one of them will have distinct strengths and weaknesses. Based on how a person with autism thinks, adapts and learns, they are characterised under different types of autism spectrum disorders. People with autism may have mild, moderate or severe symptoms. Even people diagnosed with the same type of autism may project different character and skills.
What Is Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Autism spectrum disorder describes the developmental delays in a person that affect his social and communication skills and recognition and motor skills. People with different types of autism spectrum disorder will behave differently. While some may need extreme or moderate care, others may need no help and could be capable of living independently. People with autism spectrum disorder may exhibit repetitive body movements and may have difficulty in conversation. But they may have a remarkable memory.
Different Types of Autism Disorders
Various types of ASD are listed below to help you understand it better and help the affected ones move in a productive way:
1. Asperger's Syndrome
Asperger's syndrome is on the milder end of the autism spectrum. People with Asperger's syndrome are usually intelligent and are able to do their daily tasks, but they may have trouble socialising. People with this syndrome are quite intelligent but they may be quirky. Hence this type of autism is also nicknamed "geek syndrome".
2. Pervasive Development Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS)
People with pervasive development disorder show less or least symptoms of autism as compared to people affected with other forms of autism. They may hardly face difficulty socialising and communicating with someone. If this condition is diagnosed early, changing the diet, taking up social skills classes and occupational therapies can help a person recover faster. Along with Asperger's syndrome, autistic disorders and more, PDD-NOS were also added to the spectrum of autistic disorders.
3. Autistic Disorder
It is also known as Kanner's syndrome and is one of the severe and most common types of autism disorders. They generally show symptoms like lack of communication and intellectual skills. You may even notice that these type of people may be sensitive to touch, sound, light, and smell. People with other forms of autism may exhibit similar symptoms, but people with the autistic disorder show the symptoms at an intense level.
4. Rett Syndrome
Rett syndrome is a genetic disorder affecting girls. The symptoms of Rett syndrome may be evident in girls from the age of 6 months. It is a type of autism that can be diagnosed medically and its main symptom is difficulty in communication. Rett syndrome impairs a person's ability to use hands and is termed as a progressive form of autism. Many intense symptoms of this form of autism include teeth grinding, mental retardation, and delayed growth which may be evident as the child grows.
5. Childhood Disintegrative Syndrome
This type of autism is also called as Heller's syndrome and is one of the rare types of autism as doctors co-relate this to seizure disorders. It is considered as a complex disorder as it gets severe only after the age of 2. Children affected by this type of autism develop normally until the age of 2. They may not face any problem recognizing or interacting with someone. Early diagnosis of the situation will help the child improve through speech, occupational and behavioural therapy. Making some dietary changes may also help improve his condition.
Autism is not discussed much in India. But slowly, things are changing and people are becoming more and more aware of diseases like autism. Knowing the types of autism can help you recognize the signs in people you come across and sensitize a larger group to the condition.

Thrombocytopenia (Low Platelet Count) During Pregnancy
A pregnant woman may face various medical challenges during her pregnancy and one such challenge is a low platelet count or Thrombocytopenia. Pregnant women go through many physical and emotional changes during pregnancy and these severe pathological changes in the body may result in conditions such as thrombocytopenia.
What is Thrombocytopenia
Platelets are responsible for blood clotting and play a significant role during pregnancy as well. The average or normal platelet count of a non-pregnant woman may range between 150,000 and 400,000 per microlitre of blood. The platelet count of a woman may drop to 116,000 per microlitre of blood during pregnancy. However, if it is less than 116,000, the condition is known as thrombocytopenia.
If there is only a slight drop in your platelet count, it is not a matter of great concern as it may not cause any medical complication for you or your baby. Though, your platelet count will be monitored closely by your doctor or midwife to see if there is a further drop. However, extreme drop in your platelet count may cause serious problems and therefore will require immediate medical help.
How Common is Thrombocytopenia during Pregnancy
Thrombocytopenia or low platelet count during pregnancy is the second most common blood disorder after anaemia. It is observed that nearly 5 to 8 percent women may get diagnosed with a low platelet count during their pregnancy. Not all cases of thrombocytopenia may cause serious complication in pregnancy or childbirth, but it is better to prepare yourself to face any complications that may arise with this condition.
What Causes Low Platelets Count during Pregnancy
Following are some of the causes of low platelet count in pregnancy:
High Blood Pressure or Preeclampsia: When your blood pressure reaches alarming levels in pregnancy it puts you and your child at risk. The risk involves damage to the organs of both mother and her unborn child. This condition may also cause low platelet count in a pregnant woman.
Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia: Heparin is a medicine used to treat abnormal blood clotting. Sometimes the use of this medicine may result in low platelet count and this kind of thrombocytopenia is called Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia.
HELLP-Haemolysis of Red Blood Cells Elevated Liver Enzymes and Low Platelets: This medical condition results from high blood pressure which may cause severe damage to the liver. The damage to the liver leads to platelet to drop resulting in thrombocytopenia.
ITP or Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura: This is an immune-mediated disorder which leads to a decrease in the platelet count of the body. In a primary ITP, the exact cause of immune destruction cannot be established, whereas the reason for immune destruction in secondary ITP may be caused because of Hepatitis C or SLE.
Medicine Induced: There are many medicines that may hamper the platelet production. Some common drugs that may be used in pregnancy, such as, ibuprofen, paracetamol etc can affect the platelet formation in the body, resulting in thrombocytopenia.
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE): This is an autoimmune disorder in which the body attacks itself. Pregnancy may elevate the chances of SLE by forming antibodies that destroy various organs. It may target bone marrow, which is responsible for platelet formation. The affected bone marrow may cause low platelet count.
Cancer: A pregnant woman may be affected with Myelodysplastic syndromes and lymphoproliferative syndromes. These are the common types of cancers that may affect a pregnant woman resulting in low platelet count.
DIC Or Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation: This disease can be caused due to various pregnancy-related medical conditions. This condition may cause widespread clotting in the body. The clotting may result in low platelet count.
Aplastic anaemia: This blood disorder in pregnancy may result in complete destruction of the red bone marrow resulting in low platelet count.
HIV/AIDS: HIV is an immune disorder that may also affect a pregnant woman. This infection causes destruction in the bone marrow. When HIV causes destruction in the bone marrow, it results in low platelet count.
What Happen if You Have Thrombocytopenia
If you have thrombocytopenia before pregnancy, there is a fair chance that it is caused due to some existing condition or medication that you may be taking. This condition can be determined through an early pregnancy test as there is no specific diagnostic test to determine the cause of low platelet count in the body. Your doctor will monitor your condition regularly to check for any symptom of the underlying cause or to check any further decline in the platelet count.
If the low platelet count is established in the later stages of pregnancy, then it may due to various reasons such as preeclampsia or HELLP syndrome. You will be treated according to the symptoms of your condition.
In case of gestational thrombocytopenia, you are unlikely to require any treatment. However, your doctor may keep a constant tab of your health.
Risks of Low Platelet Count during Pregnancy
The major risk associated with low platelet count in pregnancy is the increased risk of bleeding during the childbirth or post that. There is an increased blood supply to the uterus during pregnancy and the surgical procedure requires cutting of major blood vessels. Women with thrombocytopenia are at increased risk of losing excessive blood. The risk is more in case of caesarean delivery as compared to vaginal delivery.
If a woman with thrombocytopenia requests for an epidural then she may be at a risk of spinal epidural hematoma, a condition which can be caused by an accidental puncture in the spine. This condition may lead to permanent paralysis also.
Treatment for Pregnancy Low Platelet Count
The treatment for low platelet count in pregnancy depends on the severity of your condition. Milder conditions usually do not require any medical intervention but may require constant monitoring by your doctor. However, the severe cases will require a proper treatment. The treatment will involve treating the medical condition (preeclampsia, HHELP, SLE etc) which is causing the platelets to drop.
How to Increase Low Platelet Count Naturally
You may increase your low platelet count by following natural methods:
By including beetroot in your diet.
By including fish and meat in your diet.
By consuming astragalus (herb).
By adding zinc supplements
By consuming vitamin B-12, generally found in meat
By consuming Vitamin K, generally found in green leafy vegetables
By consuming chlorophyll
By consuming Vitamin C rich food ( citrus fruits )
By avoiding alcohol and refined sugar
Though consuming foods that may help increase your platelet count may seem like a good idea, but it is recommended to seek your doctor’s advice before making any dietary changes.
Though most cases of thrombocytopenia do not pose a serious threat to you or your unborn child, however, if you have been diagnosed with this condition, it is important that you get the apt treatment for the same. Timely detection and treatment of your condition will reduce the chances of complications.

Asperger's Syndrome in Children
On certain occasions you might notice your kid having difficulty interacting with people, or communicating what they need. Most kids take their time in learning this as they grow up, but some kids seem to face a lot of difficulties which is extremely evident from their behaviour. In such cases, there might be a chance that your kid might be suffering from Asperger's syndrome.
What is Asperger’s in Kids?
Characterized as a type of autism, Asperger's syndrome is a condition that affects a person’s ability to understand language, communication, and social cues. Earlier, it was considered a separate condition but lately it is also taken under the umbrella of autism. Terms such as low-functioning or high-functioning kids, tendencies depicting autism, development disorders, and others are used in describing such behavior. Asperger’s kids usually lie on the high-functioning side of autism with boys have nearly triple or quadruple times chances of having the syndrome as compared to girls.
What are its Possible Causes?
The causes of Asperger's syndrome in children are usually genetic. However, a specific gene hasn’t yet been isolated that can be termed as responsible for this condition. Given the difference in intensity degrees of Asperger's, there is a possibility of more than one gene being responsible for the condition.
Research that has been conducted lately has signified that certain abnormalities in the structure of the human brain might be the reason behind Asperger’s. This structural anomaly causes certain circuitry of the brain to interact differently, which affects the thought and behaviour of the children. Also, certain interactions between specific genes and environmental conditions may cause this to happen during the development of brain cells in the embryo stage. This leads to an overgrown brain or a one that hasn’t grown to full capacity. Advanced live MRI scans have depicted that the brain activity in the frontal lobe of such children is highly reduced as well as their brain responds differently when asked to perceive social cues or expressions.
What can be Asperger’s Symptoms in a Child?
Trouble understanding expressions on the face, body language or other gestures
Cannot understand jokes or playful teasing and are confused
Talk without any voice modulation or without a particular rhythm
Have trouble making friends or even interacting with children their age
Avoid making any eye contact and prefer to be alone by themselves
Do not generally converse or share anything they find interesting
Do not talk about what they are feeling
Might get obsessively interested in one particular thing
Extremely stubborn about specific routines and getting upset with small changes
Unusual and repeated movements such as rocking, moving in circles, flapping fingers, and so
Clumsy movements and unable to maintain stability
Can speak fluently but only about very specific themes
Extremely different reactions to tasting, smelling or feeling something as compared to others
How to Diagnose Asperger’s Syndrome in Children?
There is no standardized childhood Asperger's syndrome test that can be applied to every child to achieve a result. Each doctor uses various criteria and various screening methodologies to carry out a diagnosis. Amongst doctors themselves, there’s a debate in considering Asperger's as a type of autism or separately as a specific condition. Most of the times, the focus stays on a certain set of behavioral characteristics that have a high tendency of being present in Asperger's afflicted children, such as –
Avoiding eye contact and staying aloof
Failure to register being called by their own name
Difficulty in understanding or using gestures to point out objects
Avoid interacting with other children in general or playing with them
These behaviours may surface in the initial months itself, or even later but primarily before they are 3 years old. Your family doctor will carry out a primary screening to check for development cues and responses. Later, a team of doctors such as psychologists, neurologists, speech experts, and so on might evaluate your child to conclude if he really does have Asperger's or not. In this, intensive cognitive tests and language assessment is conducted, as well as motor functions are observed. Evaluating various non-verbal forms of communication, their strengths and weaknesses in each aspect are seen. By observing your child in multiple areas, all the doctors can put together their understanding of each, and create a profile for your child, which can help diagnose the condition.
How is it Treated?
Just as diagnosis, there is no generalized Asperger's syndrome treatment in children that have known to work for every child out there. The key factor is to work towards resolving the issues of communication, obsession, and clumsiness. A treatment program for your child will have to be customized to suit his interests, provide them with a schedule they can follow, introduce simple tasks, and reinforce the right kind of behavior for them to follow. This can be done by –
Group therapy sessions that focus on building social interaction skills
Behavioural therapy sessions that can help children with extreme emotions talk to themselves in a manner that calms them down
Medicines for children with severe effects of the condition, leading to anxiety or depression
Physical therapy session that helps them develop control over their motor skills
Speech therapy that helps kids understand the nuances of communication
Sessions for parents in order to educate them in with the right techniques to use at home
Are there any Future Challenges that Kids with Asperger’s might Face?
Timely intervention is absolutely necessary for helping children with Asperger's start developing the right skills necessary to move ahead in life. With the right treatment, this can pretty much be resolved. However, they might continue to encounter difficulty in navigating various social scenarios ahead in life or have trouble establishing a personal relationship with someone. People with Asperger's are known to work in most jobs of the market today, albeit with support and encouragement from their loved ones or close ones.
By interacting with more people with the same condition and learning how they overcame the odds, your child can try and inculcate those lessons to make sure they don’t face the same problems themselves.
How to Help a Child with Asperger’s?
Before helping your child, it is necessary to help yourself. Search for programs that help educate parents about taking care of children with Asperger's.
The focus should remain on making sure that your child can live by himself and doesn’t need to be constantly dependent on people around him. Start by helping him developing skills that make him independent.
You might not know for sure if your child has Asperger's or some other condition. Irrespective of so, it is best to have an honest and nuanced conversation with his teachers or doctors and talk to them in terms of your child having special needs or requiring extra attention.
Your child may be good at some activities and have problems with others. Look for programs that specifically address those areas that your child struggles with, and start tackling them one by one.
Any programs or treatment techniques that help develop a long-term engagement to ensure continued development are highly preferred.
At any point in time, do not let your child feel different from the family. Just like every person in the family has their own needs, so does your child. Do not load him with your own emotional problems and physical issues in handling the situation, since that would make them feel horrible about who they are. Look to friends and family for your own support, so that you can, in turn, support your own child.
Be it Asperger's in toddlers or in grown-up kids, tackling a situation like this isn't easy. Being informed, knowledgeable, and taking the right precautions while administering treatment, go a long way in ensuring continued development for your child. Remember to love them no matter how they are. Your love and support make them feel accepted and helps them work towards improving their skills with just as much intensity and motivation. Read more

Importance of Self-Care in Post-Delivery Phase and Healthy Lifestyle Improvements You Can Make
When the first cry hits your ears and that love pours out of your heart for your baby, you feel immense gratitude. Sometimes this feeling of taking care of your baby overpowers your own healthcare. The first three months are very important and decisive of your upcoming healthy relationship with your baby. So it’s important to keep a few points in mind:
Sleep when the baby sleeps. Easy said than done, right? But a few things that helped me was keeping the room dark when the baby sleeps so that I can trick my mind into sleeping and usually drinking lukewarm milk as it contains serotonin which helps
the mind to relax.
Eat right and healthy. Don’t start fad diet to lose weight asap. It will take its own sweet time but for now, focus on healthy eating as done by our moms and grandmoms. Remember if you eat something that’s not good, it might cause discomfort to the baby as you are breastfeeding.
The best way not to jeopardise your baby's immunity is to limit the contact with guests and other people as baby's immunity would be developing and you would also be going through a resting and restorative phase.
Start walking short distances as and when suggested by your healthcare advisor and you soon will be back to your normal healthy routine. If you are allowed to do exercises then there’s nothing better than that. Exercise releases hormones that releases
that feel good factor in our brain.
Be happy. Postpartum anxiety is a new norm but thanks to all the support groups and amazing people in our life, we fight it all away. ?
Schedule a salon appointment. Give yourself a break and enjoy a fresh haircut or just a simple facial can do the trick. More feel-good factors, more the energy you have to take care of your baby.
Working on your immunity. As you may be knowing, medicines are a no-no while breastfeeding and very few medications are allowed by doctors. So take supplements as advised by the doctor. I personally took Vitamin C to increase my immunity and a
vitamin supplement given by my doctor.
This is the time when you should rest as much as you can, especially first three months, when your family cooks for you in first months usually, and once your baby starts crawling, then you will have your own aerobics exercise.
Lots of love ?

Why stop with one child? Plan for the 2nd child.
As parents we plan everything for the future of our child like schooling, career, mediclaim etc and most importantly finacial security. We never forget to pay premiums of insurance policy so that if something bad happens their child is financilly secured, "but have we ever taught about EMOTIONAL SECURITY of child"
Yes you thinking right I want to share my views on the dilemma every parents face after giving birth to first child, " Do we need 2nd child"
We get so much tired taking care of child that we feel that one child is enough for us. But I strongly feel that there should be minimum 2 children in one family. Here are the reasons why?
If parents die early whom will the child go, they will feel secured with their own siblings, as they have grown up together.
They have a full time play partner, which reduces the screen time.
It's easier for them to adjust with other kids at school. Else single living child doesn't know how to adjust with other kids at school.
They learn to share their toys and food, we pamper our child so much that we buy them everything they want by which they dont share things with others.
They never get bored and bug us, as they get busy with themselves which saves parents time. Elsen in today's world it's very difficult for parents to spare time for playing with kids.
Many things can be re-used like toys or books.
Above are just advantages, but the main thing our child will be never alone, even in our absence they will have someone to stand besides them at sad and happier times, someone called as own and not cousins.
Many of them are worried how will we support 2 child financially as they can't afford, but I belive if husband and wife both work hard and reduce little luxury, they can support 2 child.
I have 3 siblings, I have experienced it personally the fun time we had together, secrets we shared together, little fights for choclates and games and many more memories. Our mother used to get us all types of board games which we enjoyed playing together.
Plan your child's emotional security along with financial security, they will surely thank you later.
