Identical (Monozygotic) Twins
Twins are nature’s wonder. Their birth also involves special pre-natal and post-natal preparations to avoid complications. Accurate knowledge about them prepares for their arrival and aftercare. The first thing you need to know is that they are of broadly of two types, identical and non-identical twins:
Identical (monozygotic) twins are also called non-fraternal twins. One in every three sets of twins is identical.
Non-identical (dizygotic) twins are also called fraternal twins. They form 2/3rd of the twin population.
What Are Identical Twins?
Identical twins share the same DNA and often look alike. Medically, they are called monozygotic because these twins develop from one (mono) zygote (fertilized egg).
How Are Monozygotic Twins Formed?
Identical or monozygotic twins are formed when one sperm fertilizes one egg to form one zygote, which then splits into two separate embryos that develop into two foetuses in the same womb. In assisted pregnancy, if one fertilized egg is returned to the mother’s uterus then this egg may divide and produce identical twins in the womb.
What Increases the Chances of Having Identical Twins?
Some women are likely to have a higher chance of giving birth to identical twins. This happens because:
Diet: Excessive dairy and meat have been known to increase the chances of having twins. In addition, food items like bananas and asparagus which are known to improve fertility can also make you have twins.
Family Size: Having twins can sometimes just be a numbers game. The odds of having twins are slim but if you keep having kids, some of them are bound to be twins
Pills: Fertility pills can overstimulate the ovaries and lead to multiple eggs being produced at a given time.
Maternal Age: Women in their late thirties tend to produce more follicle stimulating hormones. This results in situations where more than one egg is produced in a single cycle.
Family History: Having multiple twins on either side of the family can be a factor for having twins. It may be indicative of the women in the family having an ovarian abnormality of producing multiple eggs in a single cycle.
Why Does Fertilised Egg Split into Two?
Medical science has still not exactly identified why this happens despite much research. One may at best say that it is actually a malformation during pregnancy. According to some research, less than 20 families have been reported with a genetic 50 % likelihood towards getting pregnant with twins. Another research suggested that the womb environment in identical twin pregnancy triggers the zygote split in many cases.
When Are Monozygotic Twins Actually Formed?
Identical twins are usually formed when the zygote is in the very first phase of development. At this time the zygote splits into two separate embryos that form two foetuses that go on to become identical twins. This causes each baby to have the same genetic information.
How Do You Know if Your Twins are Identical?
It is not easy to know whether your twins are identical. An ultrasound may come up with some indications that characterize it:
They have developed from one fertilised egg or two.
They share a placenta.
They have the same gender (although in many countries, determining this may be legally forbidden).
Are Ultrasound Scans for Confirming Identical Twins Accurate?
An ultrasound scan is not a fool-proof method to confirm identical twins. Some identical twins may split during the early stages and develop with two placentas, thereby developing as non-identical twins. These may not be detected by an ultrasound. Advanced pregnancy examinations like amniocentesis or Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) may be more accurate.
Can Identical Twins be of Different Genders?
Identical twins are almost always of the same gender because they always have the same DNA. However, there have been exceptions where the gender of the two babies was different.
Will it be Obvious That Twins are Identical at Birth?
Most times it will be obvious at birth whether the twins are identical or fraternal. However, there are ways to confirm this (in case you have a doubt). An ultrasound scan in the first trimester of pregnancy could throw some light on whether they are identical twins. It is best to do this scan before 14 weeks of pregnancy because it is easier to see whether the twins are sharing the placenta, which identical twins do in most cases.
Sometimes there is some confusion whether it is an identical or fraternal twin because some identical twins could be born with separate membranes. A DNA test could clear the confusion.
Difference Between Identical and Fraternal Twins
Some of the key differences are:
Identical twins share the same DNA, while fraternal twins share around half of it.
Identical twins could sometimes look different while fraternal mostly always look different.
More Facts About Identical Twins
There are few more things you should know about identical twins:
There are generally three types of identical twins:
One-third have separate placentas.
Two-thirds share a placenta and are called monochorionic.
Very few of them share an inner sac, called the amnion, in addition to sharing a placenta. They are called monoamniotic (MoMo)
There is another type of identical twin with opposite features, called mirror twins. They have the same fingerprints and same DNA. One of the twins may also have organs placed on the opposite side of the body, for instance, the heart may be on the right side.
Then there are half-identical twins (Polar Body Twins). These twins are born when an egg splits before fertilization and each half is fertilized by a separate sperm. Polar body twins are known to share 75% of their DNA and have not been officially accepted as twins.
There are only three documented cases of identical twins with opposite sexes and they are because of chromosomal birth defects.
Identical twins may suffer from Vanishing Twin Syndrome, where one of the twins disappears in the uterus due to a miscarriage. Following this, the foetal tissue gets absorbed by the other twin, placenta or the mother.
Many women have a miscarriage of one twin early in their pregnancy, but the other survives. This is similar to vanishing twins.
Identical twins can be conjoined twins (Monoamniotic-Monochorionic). These twins have bodies that are joined together at birth. Conjoined twins are very likely to be mirror twins.
Sometimes one twin foetus does not develop at all and becomes a parasite of the other. These are called parasitic twins.
Chimaeras are individuals who may have parts that they have received from an identical twin in the womb.
There is an illness called Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS) that impacts identical twins. This is a placental disease where fluid distribution is uneven and affects the twins differently. While one becomes dehydrated, the other becomes inundated with fluid leading to excessive urination.
Lastly, these above peculiarities also indicate that identical twin pregnancy should be properly discussed with your doctor to ensure smooth delivery because they are prone to complications.
Misconceptions About Monozygotic Twins
You may not know everything right about identical twins. Here are the most commons myths about identical twins:
Identical twins mean exactly the same: This happens because it is assumed that identical twins have the same characteristics due to the same DNA they share.
Identical twins have the same height and weight at birth: This comes from the same inference that identical twins have everything similar because they share the same DNA.
Doctors always know that it is an identical twin: A doctor cannot be conclusive and say for sure whether you are carrying identical twins because there are many peculiarities among twins that examinations may not be able to identify.
Hairline/parts are all identical: This is the most common assumption because no one has the knowledge that identical twins can be very different from each other.
Personalities of identical twins never differ: This is the biggest myth of all! Almost always twins have unique character traits.
Parents of identical twins will never get confused about their twins: Why not, it is natural to do so if they really look the same!
It is very important to know whether you have an identical or fraternal twin: It is not necessary at all to know so much and this will not pose any problems on how you bring them up.
Now that you know a lot about identical twins, we wish you the very best in your twin journey with them: one of great joy and one of great wonder!

Strange as it may seem, especially to non-believers, our zodiac sign is said to influence even the way we behave with our parents and the kinds of challenges we will face while raising them! Well, knowing about them in advance will help you get prepared. Even if you don't believe in astrology, this can be a fun ride to help you understand the whole parenting thingy a little better.
Check out this list of parenting challenges based on zodiac sign - they are eerily accurate and are sure to come up in your life some time or the other!
Aries (March 21 to April 19): Temper
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="245"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
The very first sun sign, Aries mommies are not to be messed with! Energetic, fierce and a natural leader, you are not afraid to discipline to children...in fact, being a natural leader, this is really easy for you. As a result, your kids are obedient and well-mannered. However, there are some downsides to your dominant personality. Your fierce temper can get out of hand, so make sure you remember to not get too carried away when you are trying to make your kids responsible for their actions.
Taurus (April 20 to May 20): Tendency to over discipline
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
Similar to the Aries mom, you are also headstrong about things and want to make your kids disciplined little humans. While discipline is good, kids will be kids and get up to mischief. Cut them some slack from time to time to keep both you and your kids happy and at peace. Also, hats off for instilling discipline and values in your moppet.
Gemini (May 21 to June 20): Lack of balance between discipline and fun
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="245"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
Owing to your sign being ruled by the information planet Mercury, it should come as no surprise to anyone that your kids are well-informed. However, since you love having conversations with your kids, make sure they don't turn into chatterboxes. Also, your fun-loving nature might hamper your ability to be firm or consistent while disciplining your kids, so make sure you keep a watch on this.
Cancer (June 21 to July 22): Tendency to be a homebody
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
Family comes first for you, and the whole world knows it. You love and support your kids right from when they are bawling infants. But there's one thing you're guilty of – you like staying at home way too much! Take some trips a few times a month to give your kids and husband the outing they deserve!
Leo (July 23 to Aug 22): Overreaction
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
Just like a lioness, you take great pride in your little cub(s). Proud and protective of your brood, your kids are sure to feel safe and loved with you. What's more, your warm and fun nature means your kids will look forward to some fun birthday parties and random surprises. But there's a downside: your dramatic nature can make you overreact and make mountains out of molehills. Remember to take a deep breath and count to ten every time you feel overwhelmed!
Virgo (Aug 23 to Sept 22): Perfectionism
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
With your exceptional perfectionism and multitasking skills, you can do it all and you do it well. So not only do you take care of your child's needs, you also take care of yourself and your family as a unit. So naturally, your kids know who to turn to you when they need help with school, friends, or any problem that they are facing in life. However, your perfectionism might cause you to put pressure on your kids to do everything perfectly. This will tend to make your kids feel insecure and annoyed, so take it easy and encourage your child to do the best they can.
Libra (Sept 23 to Oct 22): Not being able to draw the line
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
Balance and consistency are two of your strongest traits, which means your kids will have a balanced and peaceful existence! None of the overt discipline or 'rules are for fools' attitude for you. Your kids will pretty much be little grown-ups most of the time, knowing when to do what, sharing, caring, and being good at heart. You believe life is an adventure, and you want your kids to have the best in life. But knowing where to draw the line is tough for you, so each time you plan to do something fun for your tot, make sure to ask yourself, ”will this enrich my child's life, or will it be something he does not really need?”
Scorpio (Oct 23 to Nov 21): Being too sensitive
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
Your intuitive nature will make you figure out problems your child is facing, and help them resolve it too. Loyalty and protectiveness are second nature to you, so your kids are always in good hands. However, this also means that you tend to take your kid's problems far too personally, or make them your own! Let your child fight their own battles – they will thank you for it later!
Sagittarius (Nov 22 to Dec 21): Impatience
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="480"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
You know childhood doesn't last forever, and you certainly know how to have fun! Your impulsive nature ensures your kids have a fun, lively environment at home and a great outlook on life in general. But patience is not your virtue, and everyone knows being a parent requires oodles of patience! Try to limit your impulsiveness when it comes to parenting – your kids need a fixed schedule for basics like mealtime, playtime, etc. Try to find a balance between being your kid's friend and your kid's mom.
Capricorn (Dec 22 to Jan 19): Being too serious
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
You can handle just about any curveball life throws your way, so breathe easy, mom! You have a strong sense of duty and responsibility, which equips you to impart the right values in your child. But this also means you take things too seriously, making parenting harder than it already is. So try to see the lighter side and make things easier for yourself. This will also will help your kids not worry too much and even learn how to make the best of any situation.
Aquarius (Jan 20 to Feb 18): Being too selfless
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
Your selfless nature makes you an amazingly caring mom. You are always aware of what's happening in your child's life, and always there when he needs you. However, there is too much of a good thing. Spend some time with yourself and give your kids some me-time to nurture a beautiful, healthy, loving mother¬child relationship.
Pisces (Feb. 19 - March 20): Being lost in fantasy
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="450"] Source: GIPHY[/caption]
Dreamy, artistic and sensitive – these are the words that describe you. Rest assured, your kids will turn out this way too. You will teach your kid to go after what they want - and that is for sure, a great quality for any parent. Unfortunately, artistic folks like you tend to not be rooted in reality, so make sure that you don't encourage your angel's unrealistic dreams. He might be too young to know better now – but with time, they might grow to resent you for feeding them dreams of fulfilling the impossible. Tread with caution!

Managing Rough & Tumble Play Among Children
Hostile behaviour in its playful form can be called rough-and-tumble play. Many children love to play like this. There are benefits of rough play, but it also has an ugly side as your child could start behaving aggressively. Thus, keeping a constant check on your child’s temperament during playtime is important.
Playing makes children more social, aids in motor skills development, boosts creativity and imagination. Rough play is that part of the child’s demeanor that can manifest as mean and aggressive behavior, if keen supervision and prompt intervention at the right time is not done. There is no denying that rough-play is dangerous, but parents should understand that even this bearing is essential for the toddler. It helps him understand the finer differences in the way feelings flow in real life. Only showing the brighter side of life would never help the kid if he doesn’t understand the workings of the darker feelings.
Parents’ Misconception about Rough & Tumble Play in Kids
Some parents fear that their children would become violent if they are allowed to play rough. However, rough play does not induce violent tendencies. In fact, it is proved that it helps the kid develop positive emotions and reinforce genuine social interactions. Rough and tumble play is manifested in various forms like chasing, wrestling, tickling, boxing, hitting and running – but in a fun way without hurting anyone.
Reasons Why Parents Discourage Rough Play in Toddlers
Parents fear that others might misunderstand your child as mean or violent.
They are hesitant to let the child have high levels of physical activity which might affect his health.
An excessive aggressive behaviour at home could be displayed by the child.
Fear that the child might be recognised as a bully or an aggressor in front of other kids.
Apprehension of children becoming stubborn
Parents might be afraid that teachers might not be able to control the kid in the classroom.
The child can become susceptible to injuries.
Though parents have their own reservations related to rough play, children are quite enthusiastic about it.
Why Do Children Like To Play Rough?
It is a basic human instinct which is present in all of us. But this comes out in the most uncontrolled manner in toddlers, as they are seldom aware of their strengths.
People in modern society believe that rough play helps a child to improve his motor skills. But from the children’s point of view, it is just pure fun!
Rolling around and climbing over one another is a game that children play for fun and enjoyment.
Given the sedentary lifestyle of today’s young generation, it becomes imperative for children to enjoy a little during these physical activities. The only thing that parents need to be concerned about is that the games should not convert into something dangerous or violent. If the kid wants to intentionally inflict pain to others, then it’s time to make him understand the rules of the game.
Benefits of Rough & Tumble Play in Kids
1. Enhanced motor skills
Toddlers start regulating their motor movements in a better way. Their body starts becoming more flexible and their reflexes improve.
2. Socially competent
Toddlers start building a sense of competition. They start understanding their limits, abilities and strength. It also helps them in devising ways by which they could prove their capabilities.
3. Relationships with peers
Playing rough makes a child have positive relationship with his peers. This happens mainly because they understand the meaning of healthy and playful fighting. They also learn how to improve their social signals by encoding and decoding interactions.
4. Develop a spirit to take on life
These kids are more daring. They are not like other toddlers who tend to be sensitive. The reason behind this is the confidence they develop when they engage in rough play and learn winning or losing in a healthy sense.
5. Active
They start exploring the world around them by moving around constantly. Rough playing does not allow kids to stick to one corner and play. This is the reason they become more active.
They understand the importance of positive emotional connect with peers: Kids try to work out social relationships by helping the other kids to play rough together and take turns while playing. This not only brings about a surge in their emotional intelligence, but also helps them in developing important life skills like leadership. With the balancing of pros and cons, you can create some ground rules so that your child gets the best of the benefits and does not incline towards the bad aspects of rough play. Tell your child that hitting or pinching other children is a big “No-No”. When other kids exhibit discomfort or pain due to your child’s behavior, tell your child to stop. If your kid does not listen to you, use firmness and discipline. Make sure that you are always around to guide and keep him out of danger. Read more

Is Your Child a Threenager?
There was a time when kids were sweet and gullible. Their parents would decide how the children dressed or which toy they would get on their birthday. It was only when this little cherub steps on the threshold of teenage hood that every parent starts dreading the rebellious teenager who is convinced that his parents are out of fashion oldies who don't know anything and will never understand him.
But gone are those days. Changing parenting styles, better standard of living, higher pay packages, and easier access to information have resulted in a new devil- the 'threenager'. They can be described as little humans who according to their birth certificate are 3 years old but have the spoilt attitude of a 13-year-old. They have recently gained independence. They have a volatile, stubborn attitude and strong opinions with recently acquired verbal skills to let you know what they want, when they want.
The threenager decides that he will wear a specific type of dress with a specific cartoon character in a specific colour and specific type of shoes. Anything else will just not do and if the parent doesn't agree to the decision, then be ready to face the fury. God forbid if you cut sandwiches into squares when the threenager demanded triangles or you made a round roti when a fish shape was ordered. Be ready for high-pitched cries and tantrums when you take away the phone/ tablet when the threenager was busy watching his favourite video.
The threenagers are smart and obstinate; they will not take no for an answer. So you better have your case ready when they ask you a plethora of questions to justify your 'no' . If you can't coerce them, then be ready for a meltdown especially in a public place.
Are you living with a threenager?

Preparation and Celebration of My Diwali Festival
First of all Happy Diwali to everyone! As the saying goes cleanliness is next to godliness, my Diwali started by cleaning the home. I got rid of all the unwanted things and cleaned every nook and corner of my home. This year I used eco-friendly products to clean my home, I am very happy with the outcome and also the decision. I felt tired because of continuous cleaning work that went on for 4 days. Then I decided to go out and feel the air filled with the festive spirit and I bought dresses for my family, purchased pooja items, earthen lamps and firecrackers. Shopping for Diwali makes me overcome my tiredness and regain my lost energy. We prepared anjeer burfi, laddu, murukku and mixture for Diwali sweets and snacks. We were ready for Diwali and the day had finally arrived. Hurray!
Today is Diwali, we woke up early and followed the ritual by applying sesame oil on our heads and completed our Ganga Snanam. We wore new clothes and jewellery. The puja room was decorated with flowers and poo kolam. We kept floating candles in a fishbowl and placed it in the centre of the dining table. It was well-appreciated. Then we performed puja to seek blessings from God and all the elders at home. Then lit home with handmade earthen lamps. We all know bursting crackers is one of the most joyous parts of celebrating Diwali but we minimally purchased crackers keeping in mind the recent supreme court guidelines for bursting crackers. We bursted fire-crackers during the allocated time slot. The best part is that I celebrated Diwali with my son. I was excited when he held a sparkler with my help and he enjoyed watching fireworks without any fear. My son easily adapts to change even though he is merely 14 months old. Then we went for our breakfast which included different kinds of mouth-watering homemade and store-bought sweets, South Indian special idli with sambhar and other snacks from our neighbours. It was a big breakfast followed by watching tv shows. We wished our friends & relatives a happy Diwali and shared sweets and gifts. This Diwali is really very special for me with a lot of happy and sweet memories.

People to Appreciate This Valentine's Day (Apart from Your Spouse!)
Valentine’s Day is an occasion to celebrate love - but who says that you need to express this love only for your partner? Sure, they’re pretty much the most important person in your life (after your little one, maybe?), but that doesn’t mean they’re the only one deserving of your love and appreciation! We’re sure that if you think hard, you can pull up an entire list of people who make your life easier and beautiful, every single day.
If you’re not completely into the whole red-roses-and-chocolate situation or prefer to celebrate your love for your spouse on your anniversary, maybe V-Day is the right occasion to express your love and appreciation for these beautiful humans too!
1. Your Parents
Of course, we have to start off with the people who brought you into (and gave you) the world! They’ve raised you, made sacrifices for you, and have put your best interests ahead of every priority of theirs. And today, when you’re in their shoes raising your own baby, you’re sure to understand everything they’ve been through to get you to where you are in life. Don’t you just feel like calling them up or giving them a big hug right about now?
2. Your In-laws
If you are blessed with in-laws who treat you no differently than they treat their own son or daughter, you should realise how lucky you are! To be accepted into a completely new family and be given loving (and sometimes, preferential) treatment is always welcome, but not everyone gets to have this good fortune. So if you have in-laws who get you little gifts, are understanding of your different responsibilities and supportive of your dreams, and basically, are your second set of parents, make sure to give them that call or hug too!
3. Your Siblings and Cousins
The ones who have stuck by you, bailed you out of trouble with the elders, have been your partners-in-crime right from your childhood till date - your siblings and/or cousins (especially the single ones) are worthy of receiving a present or flowers from you on V-Day!
4. Your Best Friends
They fall in the same category as your siblings and cousins, don’t they? These people have probably been there either since time immemorial, or may have just entered your life recently. Either way, you know that ever since they’ve been a part of your life, things have gotten better, easier, and you can’t really remember what life was like before them! So why not send them a card or a personal message expressing your love for them?
5. Your Pet
This is especially in the case you own a dog or a cat, because those animals in particular demand your attention – so imagine how adorable it is of them to understand that there is another tiny human in the house who they need to share your love with! You may have noticed your child and pet becoming playmates; sometimes, the pet becomes super-protective of your child as well. Doesn’t that good boy (or girl) deserve a whole lot of yummy treats for being your child’s and family’s best friend?
6. Your Work Friend
We all have that one friend or two who make it easier to look forward to a gruelling day at the office! They’re always available for a quick coffee, ready to dish on the latest office gossip, or just offer a helping hand when you’re overloaded with tasks. Place a little thank-you note with a fresh cup of tea on your work friends’ desks when you get in to work on V-Day; it will be a small repayment for the happiness they give you every day!
7. Your Baby’s Nanny
That nanny is probably the reason you’re able to do 10 different things, apart from taking care of your baby, without losing your mind! The nanny keeps your little one happy, tends to his needs, and ensures that he’s taken care of in your absence. Surely someone who cares so much for your child deserves your wholesome appreciation too?
8. Your Domestic Help
If your house doesn’t look like a tornado of angry toys has turned it upside down, you probably have your house help to thank for that! Maintaining a spick and span home once your baby arrives (and especially once he becomes mobile) is quite a challenge. Not everyone chooses to hire help, and it’s totally fine too. But if you have someone who makes your home look like a haven, thank that person profusely this V-Day! Maybe you could gift them a big box of chocolates for their own kids or something similar they would appreciate!
This is just a cursory list of the people in your life - we’re sure you have so many more people you could think of, be it your neighbours, your baby’s paediatrician, the uncles and aunts who double up as your parents, and so on! If you’re not big on the concept of V-Day, you’ll probably let the day pass without as much as a second thought. But if you do want to get in on some of the action, choose an off-beat approach this year - surprise the wonderful humans (and animals) you know with tokens of your love. Who knows, V-Day might just become their favourite occasion because of you!

A. Nasal blockage is very common, specially in small children because of the narrow nasal cavity. Any kind of saline drops like nasal clear will be helpful in dissolving the stuffy secretions, which can be taken out by vnasal aspirator gently also steam inhalation will be helpful also, try to avoid keeping the child directly under the fan.
