Breastfeeding From One Side: Why This Happens & How To Overcome It
Whether it is an unexplained preference shown by the baby or the mother's level of comfort while feeding, breastfeeding on one side is a common habit mothers and babies get into unconsciously. Read on for all you need to know about why this happens and whether it is advisable.
Video: Breastfeeding From One Side Only - Reasons and What to Do
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qu61BuBehLg
Is One-sided Breastfeeding Normal?
Many mothers find it more comfortable and convenient to feed from one breast in comparison to the other. This happens because sometimes you may find one position of holding your baby more comfortable than the other. We all are either left or right handed and thus we may find it easier to perform various tasks from our preferred side. Therefore, one sided breast feeding is very normal.
Reasons why Mothers Breastfeed from One Breast only?
There are various reasons that may make mothers breastfeed from one breast only, such as:
1. Variation or Difference In the Nipple
Sometimes your baby may find one nipple easier than the other to latch on, this could be due to a mole, hair or other thing that may be bothering your baby.
2. Breast Engorgement
The tightness and stiffness of one nipple may make latching on difficult for your baby.
3. Difference In Flow
Sometimes the flow of breast milk in one breast can be more than the other, thus your baby chooses the one with easier and better flow.
4. Forgetting To Switch Over
You may forget to switch on to the other side while feeding and the neglected breast will have a low milk supply.
5. Breast Milk May Taste Different In One Breast
If you have feeding more from one side, then the other side has a lesser supply and thus the milk may taste different. You may use breast pump to improve the milk supply.
6. If You Have Mastitis
In case you have mastitis in one of the breasts, the milk may taste different (because of more sodium content) and thus your baby may refuse that breast.
7. If You Have has Breast Surgery
Breast surgery may affect the milk supply of that breast and your baby may prefer the other breast for feeding.
8. If Your Baby is More Comfortable Feeding From One Side
Sometimes your baby may get comfortable in feeding from one breast and thus would choose the more comfortable one over the other.
9. You May Feel More Comfortable To Feed From One Side
Sometimes you may feel comfortable feeding from one breast than the other.
10. If Your Baby Chooses One Breast Because of Being Sick
Sometimes due to your baby’s health condition, such as stuffy nose, ear infection or a sore inside the mouth, your baby may choose to feed from one side only.
11. Due To Some Medical Condition
Sometimes due to some medical condition such as stiff neck because of trauma during the birth, your baby may feed from one breast.
12. If You Have Has Breast Cancer Treatment
Sometimes you may prefer to feed from one breast because of some surgical treatment on your other breast.
13. If You Have Darker Color Milk In One Breast
This may happen due to broken or injured capillary and this may cause the difference in taste of the breast milk.
14. If Your Ducts Do Not Open
Sometimes the reason for low milk supply may be because of cancerous cells in the milk ducts, and thus your baby chooses the breast with more milk supply.
What to do if your Baby has a Breast Preference?
Sometimes you may find that your baby has a breast preference and chooses one breast to feed over the other. But if your baby is less than six weeks, it will be a good idea to keep your milk supply intact in both the breasts, as the milk is produced on supply-and-demand basis.
You may make use of breast pump to pump out milk from the neglected breast as your baby feeds from the preferred breast. If you find it cumbersome, you may express milk after your baby has fed from the favourite side.
It is a good idea to keep encouraging your baby to feed from the less preferred side even if your nursing baby prefers one side. But refrain from doing so, if your baby is too hungry or irritable. The best way is to, let your baby begin from the favourite or the preferred side and then gradually slide from the more preferred to the less preferred breast.
Will your Breast Look Lopsided?
No your breast will not look lopsided if you are feeding only from one breast. You may know that one of your breasts is making more milk than the other, but the others do not know. With the passage of time and after you have weaned off your baby, your breasts will be more or less the same size.
Why your Baby Refuses another Breast?
If may notice your baby not feeding from right breast or your baby is refusing to feed from the left breast, then you need to find out the reason behind it. Check if your baby has an ear infection or stuffy nose. You may also check your milk supply and the latching position. Even the mother’s health condition, such as mastitis, may make the baby refuse to feed from the infected breast.
If your Baby only Nurses on One Side will he Get Enough Milk?
Yes, your baby will get enough milk if you nurse only on one side only. This happens because as your baby starts to feed more from one breast, the milk supply in that breast increases. The increased milk supply satiates the baby. Therefore, if you are breast feeding on demand and your baby looks contended and gaining weight, you may feed from one breast.
How to Encourage a Baby to Nurse from both the Breasts?
You may encourage your baby to nurse from both the breasts, in the following ways:
Offer the neglected or the less desired breast every time before feeding.
Offer the less preferred breast to the baby if your baby is feeling sleepy.
You may massage your less preferred breast for a good milk supply.
Refrain from force feeding on the less desired breast as it may cause complete aversion.
You may offer the undesired side after your baby has fed from the other breast, for comfort feeding.
If the shape of the nipple is the problem, then you may use nipple shield.
You may try different feeding position, such as lying down position.
You may encourage your baby to feed from both the breasts, but if your baby still refuses one breast, you may consult your doctor and know the reason for the same.

Interesting Mosquito Facts for Kids
Mosquitoes are universally hated all over the world and are the bane of most of the civilized world. These little pesky disease-carrying insects make a living by drawing the blood out of anything that moves, including humans. However, several expert entomologists state that though mosquitoes cause aggravatingly itchy bites, these biting insects are a rather spectacular group of insects. Read on to understand what makes these creatures interesting and why are mosquitoes so dangerous.
How Do Mosquitoes Bite?
We have all been bitten by mosquitoes, some of us more than others. But do we know what mosquitoes do to humans? Mosquitoes are far more multifaceted and complex than most of us would ever imagine. Often termed as a flying syringe, the mosquito uses its proboscis (elongated appendage from the head of an animal) to suck blood from any living being or animal. The mosquito cuts the skin using its proboscis to suck the blood. As the mosquito is feeding, it injects its saliva into the skin of the human or animal it is feeding on. The body then reacts to the saliva resulting in itching or a bump. Some people have only a mild reaction to a mosquito bite.
Where Do Mosquitoes Live?
Mosquitoes can live and breed in almost any setting or environment, except for the extreme cold weather. They favor marshes, forests, weeds, and tall grasses, and also ground that is wet for at least part of the year. Also, the body of a mosquito changes radically throughout its lifecycle. As a result, these creatures need diverse conditions to live and survive, depending on their development stage. However, the most important thing that a mosquito habitat must always comprise is a form of water supply. Water offers mosquitoes a place to lay eggs and develop and grow through their water stages (egg, larval, and pupal). Post the airborne part of their life cycle; the female mosquitoes return to the water to lay a fresh batch of eggs. Female mosquitoes primarily lay their eggs on the water surface or in areas where the water can rise and flood the eggs. This water then stimulates the eggs to hatch into larvae. Mosquito larvae resemble tiny wriggling worms swimming around in sources of standing water and are often termed as “wigglers.”
How Long Do Mosquitoes Live?
If you wonder how long mosquitoes live, you have most probably been bitten by a mosquito. Did you know that certain people indeed attract mosquitoes more than others? After the female mosquito bites and draws blood, she lays her eggs at a place prone to stagnant or flooding water. This sets into motion the life cycle of new mosquitoes. When checking and at the typical lifespan of mosquitoes, the first thing you should know is that female mosquitoes live longer than their male counterparts. Also, female mosquitoes are the only mosquitoes that can bite and suck on your blood. A female mosquito can live for around one or two months (which can at times be the complete mosquito season). That said, various other mosquito types survive in areas such as attics and garages for close to six months. The average adult female mosquito can survive up to 40-53 days. That means one female mosquito can probably live in your house for close to two months. Outside, mosquitoes can only survive in temperatures over 50°F, but preferably 80°F. Adult male mosquitoes have a smaller lifespan, and they can only live for close to 10 days.
Do note that these approximate lifespans of mosquitoes are only valid in suitable conditions for mosquitoes and differ from species to species. When essentials such as adequate food sources, protection, and places to lay eggs are taken away, one can drastically shorten the lifespan of a mosquito.
What Do Mosquitoes Eat?
All adult mosquitoes feed on the honeydew or nectar of plants to receive sugar, providing sufficient nourishment for female and male mosquitoes to survive. However, females need to produce eggs and to create these eggs, the female mosquitoes require protein, which they receive from the blood of animals. Few mosquito species can store sufficient energy as larvae to create eggs when they are adults without requiring blood as food. The blood can come from mammals, humans, reptiles, frogs, or birds – however, most mosquitoes prefer a few specific sources. Some mosquitoes live only near humans to bite them and create eggs, while others bite animals or livestock first. One of the most deadly mosquito facts is that after the female mate draws her first meal of blood and lays her eggs, she immediately begins scouting for another drink of blood to create another batch of eggs without mating again. If the female mosquito survives, she may continue doing this several times in one summer.
Dengue is a viral infection borne by mosquitoes found in tropical and sub-tropical climates, mostly in urban and semi-urban, worldwide. Dengue fever can be transmitted only by the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. The incubation period for this viral infection ranges between four and fourteen days after being bitten by the infected mosquitoes.
How Do Mosquitoes Communicate?
Do mosquitoes communicate? Well, the answer is yes! Various studies indicate that both female and male mosquitoes communicate through each other’s flight tones. Both the male and female mosquitoes adjust to each other’s tone to check if they are well-matched mates; thus, they sort of “tune in to each other.” Except for the shrill whine of their wings, most species make no sound audible to man.
Life Cycle of a Mosquito
You may know how butterflies have to go through different stages before they can emerge from their cocoons and fly. Just like butterflies, the life cycle of an average mosquito can also be broken up into four stages: egg, larvae, pupa, and adult.
Egg Stage: It is the first stage of a mosquito’s life. When a female adult mosquito completes drawing on blood, she tries to find a suitable area to lay her eggs.
Larvae Stage: The mosquito eggs typically hatch within 48 hours, and the mosquitoes inside enter the second stage, i.e., the larval stage
Pupal Stage: The third stage of a mosquito’s development following its life as a larva is the pupal stage. The pupal stage lasts around two days.
Mosquito Stage: After emerging from the pupal shell, they develop into male or female mosquitoes.
Other Facts and Information About Mosquitoes for Children
If you have young ones at home, keep reading to know some more fun facts about mosquitoes for preschoolers:
Mosquito is Spanish for “little fly.”
Mosquitoes can be found in all continents, except Antarctica and a few locations with polar and sub-polar climates.
Mosquito bites can result in itching in humans. This happens because a mosquito’s saliva is an anti-coagulant and gets transferred to the skin of living creatures that mosquitoes cite.
Female mosquitoes that feed on blood favor a specific host.
One of the interesting anopheles mosquito facts is that the members of the Anopheles genus are known to transmit malaria.
Mosquitoes can multiply in stagnant water whenever it stands for four to seven days. In warm temperatures, breeding can happen even faster. Removal of stagnant water is an excellent first step towards decreasing the number of mosquitoes in your environment. However, mosquito habitats can be hard to remove altogether, as nearly any water source can serve as a breeding ground for these disease-carrying insects.

3 Things You Can Do While Your Child is Having a Meltdown (And 7 Things to do Afterward)
Panic is the best way to describe the way I used to feel when one of my children had a meltdown. My anxiety was even more heightened when the meltdown happened in public. But now things look different. Although I don't exactly look forward to meltdowns, they don't have the same hold on me that they used to. I've learned that emotions, all emotions, are neither good nor bad. They are simply conveying a message. And when I learned to start listening to the message underneath the meltdown, that's when things shifted for me as a mom. If you are ready to approach meltdowns with calm, love, and ease, keep reading. Here are three things that you can do to help you stay calm the next time your little one has a meltdown: #1 Pause Before you respond, pause. Notice anything that comes up for you. Is there a part of your body that feels tense? What feelings come up? Simply notice. #2 Breathe This is a great time to take a few deep breaths. Taking slow deep breaths can help you to calm yourself so you can approach the situation with presence and empathy. #3 Hold Space When your child is upset, they simply have a need that is going unmet. Their big emotions are a sign that they are trying to meet their need so they can find balance again. Allow yourself to move out of your head and into your heart so that you can hold space for all of your child's emotions to be heard and expressed. After everyone has settled down, here five things you can do to help you reconnect with your child and care for yourself so you can approach any future emotional upsets with calm, loving attention: #1 Connect with Empathy Step into your child’s shoes. Consider how they might be feeling or how you feel when you're upset. Even when you don't completely understand why your child is upset, show that you care. #2 Reconnect Regularly Practice connecting regularly with your children. Set aside 10-20 minutes each day for some quality time with each of your kids. Put away all distractions and allow your child to guide this special time together. #3 Shift the Energy Once your child is ready, you can start to shift the mood. Smile, laugh together, or put on some music and have a dance party. #4 Practice Self Care Fill your cup regularly, so you can pour love out to your children. When you take time to care for yourself and fill your cup, you are better able to hold a loving space when your child has big emotions. #5 Practice Gratitude Gratitude is an incredibly powerful and important practice. Remembering all of the things you are thankful for helps you to fill your cup and find the gifts even in the most challenging moments as a parent. #6 Practice Meditation Taking time in stillness can help you to settle your thoughts. Our minds can often be busy places. Take time to allow yourself to get out of the hustle and bustle of daily life and the busyness of your mind and step into the present moment so you can be present and show up as the parent you want to be for your kids. #7 Create a Mantra You can also create a mantra to support you and give you a calming/grounding focus the next time your child has big emotions. Some ideas for mantras are: · Just Breathe· I Am Enough· Present Over Perfect· I Choose Love Being a parent is an amazing journey, but it isn’t always easy. A. Nasal blockage is very common, specially in small children because of the narrow nasal cavity. Any kind of saline drops like nasal clear will be helpful in dissolving the stuffy secretions, which can be taken out by vnasal aspirator gently also steam inhalation will be helpful also, try to avoid keeping the child directly under the fan.
