Travelling With a Baby on a Flight - Checklist Before You Go
Is the thought of travelling by air with your baby giving you nightmares? There is no doubt that travelling may make your baby behave differently but there is no need to hit the panic button. If you plan well, travelling may turn into a fun experience for both you and your baby. If you are thinking about the probability of this happening, we recommend that you browse through the following article to know how you may plan your air travel with your baby.
10 Things To Consider While Flying With A Baby
What all you should do or not do while travelling with a baby on a plane? Well, here we have compiled a checklist or tips for flying with an infant that may make your air travel not only hassle-free, but it may become more convenient for both you and your baby.
1. The Age Of Your Baby
It is essential to consider this fact before you plan any air travel with your baby. Newborn babies may settle quickly as they spend most of their time sleeping. However, slightly older babies (2-4 months old babies) may not have a set feeding and sleeping schedule, which may create trouble for you. Therefore, if you are planning to travel by air make sure your baby is of an age, where he is easily manageable by you.
2. Extra Baby Supplies For The Plane
Make sure you pack enough diapers, wipes, burp clothes, changing clothes and other such baby supplies with you. Also, keep a small blanket or a sweatshirt for your baby to keep him warm during the flight. Pack smartly so that you do not fall short of anything as babies are unpredictable and you can expect anything from them.
3. Try Getting A Window Seat
It will be a good idea to book a window seat in advance. It will not only give you a little privacy while feeding, but you can also use the window to lean on for extra support and resting. Also, you will be in control of the amount of light you want as it will be a lot easier for you to close and open the window shutter. And some babies enjoy looking out of the window.
4. Feed Your Baby During Takeoff And Landing
Just the way adults feel the ear pain due to change in pressure, during takeoffs and landings, babies experience the same. This may make them cry incessantly. However, to avoid this embarrassing baby-howling session, you should feed your baby because the actions of sucking and swallowing help keep ear pains at bay.
5. Plan Your Travel Around Your Baby’s Nap Time
The best part about air travels in that you spend less time in travelling, and if your baby is at an age where he has set sleeping patterns, you might just have a solution for your travel woes. Plan your travel at a time that is close to your baby’s nap time. This way your baby may spend most of his travelling time sleeping, which means minimum hassle for you.
6. If Possible Bring A Travel Companion
There is no denying that babies are demanding and need constant care when travelling. All this caring can make you feel exhausted. Therefore, it is a good idea to have a companion on board when you are travelling with an infant. Just imagine how hard it will be to take a bathroom break if you are travelling all by yourself? Tricky, isn't it? Therefore you should try to get a travel companion with you to feel more relaxed and comfortable while travelling.
7. Pack Extra Clothes For Yourself
You may find the idea quite funny but believe it or not, you may need it. Travelling may make your baby poop, pee or even throw up more than usual and sometimes your clothes may get soiled too. If you wish to travel all stinky and dirty then probably you may skip packing an extra pair of clothes for yourself. However, we recommend otherwise.
8. Your Baby’s Travel Gear
Travelling light is not something you can execute with a baby because when it comes to babies, comfort takes priority. However, you may plan to check-in your baby’s stroller, pram, car seat or other such bulky items beforehand and most airlines may not even charge for it too. Also, if you are taking any travelling gear on-board with you, you may request the airlines to help you, board, first.
9. Pack Your Baby’s Favourite Toys
If your baby is at an age where he loves to play with toys, then it will be a good idea to pack toys for your baby when you are planning air travel. This way your baby will not only feel entertained and amused on the flight, but he will not trouble you much. However, do not pack toys that make loud noises or sounds as they may disturb the fellow passengers. Also, carry few toys as babies are usually clumsy while holding toys and may drop it on the floor and you would not like your baby to play with a toy that is get infected with germs.
10. Be Prepared To Nurse Often
There is nothing more soothing and comforting for a baby than a breastfeeding experience. By this, your baby is not only filling his tummy, but the close contact with the mother helps your baby feel protected, more so during travelling. Therefore, wear a comfortable top and bra which will make it easy to manage to feed. If your baby takes formula milk, you should pack enough sterilised bottles, formula and warm water to prepare milk for your baby. Sometimes airlines provide warm water too, but we suggest carrying water on your own for health and hygiene reasons. It will also be a good idea to carry a pacifier for your baby because it may not be hungry, but just the sucking instinct that your baby may be looking forward to satiating and under such situations, pacifiers work best.
Those mentioned above are some tips that will help you travel on a flight with a baby. However, if it is not that urgent or necessary, we recommend that you postpone your air travel plans until your baby is six months of age. This is because by that time your baby’s sleeping, feeding and toilet schedule will be more organised and it will become a lot easier for you to manage your baby on board. However, if you wish to travel before that, we recommend that you consult your doctor for the same. Your doctor will check your baby’s health and will also tell you how you can effectively manage your baby on the flight.

Shaken Baby Syndrome
Shaken Baby Syndrome is a severe internal injury to a child's head caused due to forceful or violent shaking. It results in permanent brain damage and at times can prove to be fatal. Usually, there are no apparent signs but at times the baby may vomit or show signs of irritability. In severe cases, complications like seizures, visual impairment, cerebral palsy and cognitive impairment may occur along with retinal bleeding.
What Is Shaken Baby Syndrome?
Shaken Baby Syndrome is brain damage in a baby caused due to inflicted brain injury. It is a serious form of abuse and is also known as Abusive head trauma (AHT). Vigorously shaking a baby by parents or caregivers in anger or frustration may result in this type of injury.
How Common Is It In Babies?
No one can place an exact number on the babies suffering from SBS. It has been estimated that approximately around 1000 to 1500 such incident occurs in infants every year. It mostly occurs in infants between the age group of 3 months to 8 months and up to the age of 5 years. However, as the child grows older, his chances of SBS are less compared to a newborn or infant.
How Does It Happen Only To Babies?
A baby's head is large and heavy compared to the other parts of the body and the neck is weak. Thus when someone shakes him, his head and neck move vigorously which jerks the brain inside the skull causing it to bounce back and forth. This forceful and uncontrolled movement causes the brain to bruise, bleed and swell along with the retina.
Can Abusive Head Trauma Happen Accidentally While You Are Playing With The Child?
Regular methods of play like tossing the child in the air, bicycling with the baby, bouncing the baby on our knee cannot cause AHT. Even a fall from the couch or any high furniture will not cause it until it is a severe fall. Only forceful and violent back and forth shaking movement can cause it.
Who Is At Risk Of AHT?
Although AHT can happen till the age of 5, infants between the average ages of 3 to 8 months most often suffer from it. However, new born babies, between 6 to 8 weeks old, are more prone to it.
What Are The Causes Of Shaken Baby Syndrome?
Infants are at a risk of brain injury when they are shaken forcefully or vigorously which results in Shaken Baby Syndrome. It is so because –
The skull of a new-born baby is very soft. If it gets hit even with a soft object like a pillow while being shaken, an infant's brain may get injured.
Babies have heavy and large heads in comparison to their body.
They have weak neck muscles which do not help in holding the head straight.
The blood vessels in the brain of a baby are very delicate. Therefore, when the head is shaken pressure is exerted which causes haemorrhage.
Signs And symptoms Of SBS
Signs and symptoms may vary from one baby to another, according to several factors like the age of the baby, how much force was used, how often he has been abused and for how long. However, some of the common symptoms are –
Irritable mood and persistent crying
The baby may vomit
The baby may lose his appetite
The baby may stop smiling or babbling like before
In serious injury, the baby may experience seizures
He may have difficulty in breathing
His body may become limp
Slow heartbeat
The baby may have trouble hearing
Retinal bleeding
In severe case, the infant may go into coma
He may also have other signs of physical abuse like broken bones, burnt marks, and bruises.
Baby may become excessively lethargic
The skin may turn pale or bluish
How Is Diagnosis Done?
To diagnose the problem, a doctor will first ask for a detailed medical history of the baby. He will also ask about the time when the behavioural changes started occurring. He will get a thorough physical examination of the infant done and look for bruises or any other signs of abuse. Since the brain is bruised in SBS, the doctor may take a blood pressure reading. Imaging tests, like MRI or CT Scan, will also be done to look for bleeding or injury in the brain. The infant may also have to undergo X-Rays in order to look for broken bones if any. Apart from these tests, a doctor may ask for other tests to be conducted to rule out other causes.
Complications And Long-Term Effects Of AHT
The complications and side effects of Shaken Baby Syndrome or AHT is long term. It can pose serious problems for the infant in the long run like –
The infants may experience seizures and have uncontrolled muscle movement.
He may be unable to see, speak or interact normally with others for the rest of his life.
He may suffer from Cerebral Palsy which affects the limbs and muscles, thereby making the movement of a person near impossible.
The infant may have intellectual and learning disabilities. He may never be able to talk or even if he talks, may not talk normally like children of his age.
The child may have emotional and behavioural problems.
Treatment
A baby with SBS or AHT requires emergency care which usually includes life support like oxygen and surgery to immediately stop internal bleeding in the brain. Furthermore, if the child suffers from other kinds of abuse along with it like burns, broken bones etc., doctor may administer treatment for that too. Ophthalmologists' may also be required to treat the child since retinal bleeding is common in an infant who is SBS-affected.
Prevention
Preventing Shaken Baby Syndrome is not impossible. All you need to do is –
Resist any urge to shake your baby. It is usually an outcome of anger or frustration in parents due to various reasons like the child crying continuously, postpartum depression, stress etc. However, just remember to back count until the anger/frustration gives way to the calmness in you.
Understanding that for a newly born or an infant crying is his only way to show displeasure or to put his feelings across.
Parents must also understand that as the infants grow and mature, the crying will become infrequent.
Parents can practice yoga and breathing exercises which will help them to lessen their stress.
Asking a friend or a family member to come and babysit sometimes while the parent can have some "me time", can help the parent to feel relaxed and handle stress better.
Enrolling in parenting classes can teach the parent ways to manage stress and how to handle crying infants.
If the parent hires a nanny or help to look after the baby, he/she should be guided properly and forewarned about SBS. In order to keep a regular watch on the help, the parent may install CCTV cameras.
When Should You Call The Doctor?
A doctor should be immediately called in when you see any of the symptoms of SBS like seizures/convulsions, breathing problems, or retinal bleeding, or if you suspect that your baby has SBS.
What To Do When Babies Cry?
The first thing to remember when your baby is crying is to relax. Remind yourself that it is a passing phase and with time your baby will mature and his crying will become infrequent. After having given yourself an inner "pep talk", try out the following –
Lift your baby and caress him and do a little talking with him.
Then wrap him in a blanket so that he feels secure.
Try creating noises which will help in drowning the other noises. You could even sing something to him like a lullaby.
Do the swinging movement (either in your hands or you could even place him in a cradle in case he has stopped crying by now)
You could also let him suck on a pacifier. Better still, breastfeed him (or give him a bottle of milk). In case he is crying due to hunger, that will pacify him.
In case you sense something wrong with your baby, take him to a doctor immediately.
Understanding the essential causes of Shaken Baby Syndrome is the best way in which we can prevent it. It requires a cooperative effort in identifying, investigating and preventing SBS in children. Everyone should be equipped with the knowledge of SBS so that any individual can easily detect it, manage it (if they see anyone affected by it) and try and prevent it.

10 Important Things to Remember When Breastfeeding or Bottle Feeding a Sleepy Baby
Babies have erratic schedules – they sleep when they want, feed when they want, and basically keep the entire household on its toes! When the baby finally falls asleep after a lot of crying, it seems like a crime to wake her up.
However, what if it is time for her to feed and she still continues sleeping? Should you be bottle feeding or breastfeeding a sleepy baby, and if so, what is the best way to do it?
Tips for Bottle Feeding or Breastfeeding a Sleepy Baby
Is breastfeeding a sleepy baby recommended by doctors? What about bottle feeding? We have prepared for you a list of important pointers to remember when feeding your sleepy baby – either breast-milk or formula milk.
1. Follow The 2-Hour Rule
In the first few months after birth, your baby’s digestion is super speedy! She will need frequent feeding as her tummy gets emptied every couple of hours (even as soon as 90 minutes after feeding). Thus, one of the crucial breastfeeding tips for newborns is frequent feeding. Experts recommend the 2-hour rule i.e. wake your baby up every two hours for feeding. A sleeping baby may not be able to convey the need to be fed and it is not necessary that hunger will wake her up. This is why it’s important to do this proactively.
2. Keep Baby Lightly Awake when Feeding
While breastfeeding a sleepy newborn, it is helpful to lightly wake them up. It is a very common experience of new moms that the baby falls asleep nursing. Even if your baby is not fully awake, she can still feed. However, if you are having trouble, it is a good idea to try one of the following and lightly rouse your baby:
changing the diaper
giving skin-to-skin contact
massaging your baby's back
talking to your baby
Note: Always burp your baby after feeding so the milk goes down properly. This is even more important when feeding a sleeping baby as the feeding posture might not be optimal.

3. Note The Difference Between Breastfed & Formula-Fed Babies
Babies have very speedy digestion, which is why they have the need to feed every couple of hours. However, while a breastfed baby might require feeding every two to three hours, formula-fed babies can go 4-5 hours between feedings. Infant formula takes longer to digest than breastmilk. Proceed accordingly.
4. Waking Up to Feed is a Healthy Sign
If your baby frequently wakes up for feeding, don’t panic. It does not indicate that the baby is not getting enough milk; it only means that she needs milk more often! It has been noted that babies who frequently wake up to feed have better bowel and urine outputs. It is a totally healthy sign.
5. Don’t Postpone Feeding Because Baby is Sleeping
Sometimes, especially when the baby has fallen asleep after a lot of difficulty, we try our best not to wake her up. We try and make as little sound as possible around the house so she can sleep peacefully. However, if it is her feeding time as per schedule and she is still sleeping, please do not hesitate in waking her up.
It is possible that your child is just too tired to wake up even when she is hungry. An infection or medication might also slow down the regular hunger cues she displays – e.g. waking up and crying. According to experts, waking a sleeping baby to feed is important. It is always best to stick to your feeding routine even if your child is sleeping to ensure her needs are being met even when not communicated.
6. Stimulate Your Newborn’s Suckling Reflex
When your baby is a few months old and has been feeding regularly, her suckling reflex has matured. She can now suckle even in her sleep which makes it easy for you to feed a sleeping child. However, for newborns, this suckling reflex might require some stimulation. You can do this through the following methods:
Talk to your baby gently while stroking her cheeks
Massage these areas: your baby’s chin, below the belly button, the baby’s palm
Practise skin-to-skin contact
7. Continue Feeding Till One Breast is Emptied
So, how long should breastfeeding sessions last for a sleepy baby? Experts recommend that you should continue feeding your baby till at least one breast is emptied. This will ensure she gets both foremilk and hindmilk (this is fat-rich and essential for growth – one of the breastfeeding tips doctors recommend for weight gain in babies too!).
Depending on your baby, the session can last from 15 minutes to more than half an hour – it is subjective, and is best to let your baby decide her own pace. Likewise, when bottle-feeding too, let your baby decide when she is full and look for the signs described in #8.
8. Ensure Baby Doesn’t Fall Asleep While Feeding
Since your baby was in the middle of her nap, it is possible that she is still sleepy and might doze off mid-feed. Also, the act of suckling is a sleep inducer. This is one of the common sleepy baby breastfeeding problems.
To make sure you don't have the scenario of baby sleeping through feedings, keep checking for suck-swallow-breath pattern in your baby’s cheek, jaw and ear. Make sure she is still suckling on your breast and feeding. If she does fall asleep, try to rouse her again by burping her, repositioning, or putting some breast milk on her lips.
9. Observe Signs That Your Baby is Full
When feeding a sleeping baby, it is also important to track the signs that your baby is full. If you see the following signs, it indicated you can now stop feeding and let the baby fall back to sleep:
Closing lips
Turning her head away
Stopping sucking
10. See The Doctor if Baby Shows Signs of Lethargy
Babies tend to need a lot of feeding, especially in the first few months. They are growing up fast and use up all the milk quickly. This is why they will often cry out for milk, even through the night or when they are napping. However, if your baby seems lethargic and doesn’t tend to wake up for feeding, it could signal a problem. If you suspect that your baby shows low energy levels and feeds less often, it is best to discuss with the paediatrician. Read more

The Happiness Mantra for New Mommies to AVOID Postpartum Depression.
As soon as you announce your "happy baby news" to your friends and family, one thing that you just cant stop coming your way are the endless advice and suggestions about what should and shouldn’t be done by an expecting mother. No doubt this is important, but what no one advice about is infact more significant. And that dear mommy is your postpartum care- physical as well as mental.
Its such an irony of life that the biggest happiness in a mother’s life is also sometimes unknowingly associated with feelings of sadness, guilt, frustration, mental disturbance and fatigue, confusion and above all disappointment with herself, in short, POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION ! Is this a kind of sickness to be ashamed of ? The answer is a big fat NO ! This is nowadays very common in new mothers and with small simple steps of self care, it can be overcome to make this beautiful journey of motherhood- a memorable one. The mantra or the tips for the same are very general but are very effective.
A great start is like half of the victory achieved. Try and manage to wakeup in time so that you can freshen up and have a hot cup of your favourite morning beverage before the baby wakes up.
Eat healthy- Feed Healthy. Fix your meal timings and make sure you eat fresh, healthy and hot food. Give yourself the fruity treats in between the meals as a refreshment.
Messy surroundings can help negative energy grow at a higher pace. So try to keep your place as tidy as possible, you can take help of your family or can hire a house help for the same. Also use bright coloured bedding and curtains and allow ample light in your rooms every time, this helps retain the positive energy.
The Music therapy works like magic. Tune in to your favourite music channel or playlist while breastfeeding so that those long feeding sessions become less exhausting.
Read good to feel good. If you are a reading person, keep your favourite novel handy so that whenever possible you can sneak in to read a couple of pages. Basic idea here is to restrain your mind from wandering randomly towards negative thoughts.
The evening dose is the most important. Step out of the house, preferably for a walk in a garden or a drive to a calm place nearby, for atleast 15 minutes or more in the evening with or without the baby. This makes you feel confident and uplift your energy level after a hectic day.
Patience is the key. Dont stress yourself and the baby to get in a fixed schedule, it will take time for both of you to adjust with each other. Observe your baby and try to understand his/her cues and requirements, this will help you to understand what and when your baby actually wants and will lessen your confusion.
Keep your baby busy. There is nothing more painful for a new mom to see her baby cry (even after a full tummy and a good sleep). Invest in colourful, slow moving toys with soft music to keep your baby entertained.
Your comfort will solve half of your problems. Invest in nursing inner wears and clothes, this actually makes the breastfeeding comfortable and quick, not just for the mother but for the baby too. If needed you can also buy a feeding pillow.
Caring by Sharing. Breastfeeding is a very exhausting process. Feeding of expressed milk to the baby by some other family member (preferably father of the baby) once in a while can give a refreshing break to the mother. (Make sure to take all the needed precautions before pumping or expressing breast milk, specially in the initial 6 weeks when your breastmilk supply establishes as per the baby’s demand and also learn about all the care regarding handling and storing of expressed milk.)
Tame those peaking hormones. Motherly emotions makes you over protective and possessive towards your baby. Trust and allow other family members to look after the baby from time to time. This not only develops their bond with the baby but will give you more time for self care.
Real experiences are the best lessons. Talk to other mothers in your family and friend circle about their postpartum experiences and the problems they faced and its solutions. You will be surprised to know the various issues one can face in this time, but such experiences will help you prepare for any difficulty you may face with your baby.
New father- new duties. Sharing and talking about these feelings and problems, specially with your husband is equally important. The strength induced by your partner’s pep talk can sometimes create wonders. Knowing someone is always by your side gives an everlasting strength to boost your morale.
Practice makes the mom perfect ! You are brand new to breastfeeding and you as well as baby will take time to learn it like a pro. Make yourself aware and trained before the delivery, about correct ways of breastfeeding (as in correct latch and feeding positions). Take help of vedios available on internet. In case of serious issues, visit a lactation consultant immediately. Do not hesitate to use medical aids advised if any by the LC.
Never hesitate to seek help. Problems with breastmilk supply, latching issues with the baby, sleeplessness, not able to pacify or calm your crying baby, minor health issues with mother or the baby, weight gain, panic attacks, anxiety attacks, lack of support and help from family, feeling of extreme sadness or anger, extreme lowering of self confidence, etc triggers postpartum depression. Always remember that giving birth and taking care of a new tiny human is an extremely complex and exhausting process, so if you feel any of the above mentioned symptoms, taking help from a professional at the right time is the best solution. Do not hesitate to accept the problem and look forward to taking advised measures.
When in doubt, always remember the moment when you first saw that positive pregnancy test. Revisit the happiness and reason you and your partner decided to bring this tiny bundle of joy into your lives. When in pain, always remember that this phase is temporary (so don’t miss out on happy moments while you still can live those) and its gonna get better with time (so always stay hopeful and try harder to help yourself).
