DHA for Babies and Kids
DHA is an omega- 3 fatty acid. It is used to improve health in children. Found naturally in many sources, the expectant mother is the primary giver of this acid when she is pregnant. The prenatal period is a window when the baby’s brain develops with the help of right nutrition supplied through the placenta. DHA influences the development of the brain, eyes and other primary neurological functions. It has a profound influence during the first two years of life and early stages of childhood. From birth until five years of age, the brain increases by 3.5 times its total mass and it is of critical importance that DHA is consumed in adequate amounts to support the rapid growth in the brain.
A healthy diet that provides about 600mg of DHA daily has a significant impact on the cognitive functions of the child and enhance the development of the brain and eyes. Organ meat and fatty fish are rich sources of naturally found DHA and unfortunately, these are not commonly consumed by children as they are picky eaters and prone to allergies at times. However, the growing awareness of its importance has led to its inclusion in milk, formula and other fortified foods making it easier for people of all age groups including children to obtain the benefits of this important nutrient.
What is DHA?
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a part of the omega-3 fatty acid family is a long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid often called “the healthy fats.” It has a large influence on our body as it keeps us healthy and is crucial for the optimal growth of the brain and eyes through our life. In fact, the nutrient takes centre stage when neural tissues including vision are being formed in the womb. DHA supports our cognitive, visual and mental faculties as we age.
What are the Benefits of DHA for Babies and Kids?
DHA has undoubtedly gained a lot of attention and is appearing in all places from eggs, baby food to milk. Why should one care so much about this nutrient? Well, the answer is it is a beneficial fat. The role of DHA is accentuated during infancy and early years of childhood.
For Babies
DHA plays a key role in the structural component in the brain, eyes and nervous system. Breastmilk is high on DHA content and breastfed babies have strong mental and visual acuity.
For Kids
During the early infant years until five years of age, the brain makes a rapid development and increases to about 4 times its total mass. Adequate DHA intake during these crucial years in important for optimal development and enhancement of cognitive functions. It has been researched and proven that children who have a good intake of DHA until five years of age have better IQ scores, tremendous memory, good reading skills and strong vision.
DHA deficiency could be common in children suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). In a nutshell, DHA is imperative for neurological and visual development.
Recommended Dosage
While there are no guidelines for a daily DHA dosage for children, there are certain recommendations that exist for intake of DHA plus eicosapentaenoic acid, or EPA.
For Babies
Babies who are breastfeeding will receive most of their DHA intake from the milk. Breastmilk is known to be high on DHA content. It is advisable for mother’s to increase their intake of DHA rich food while breastfeeding, A breastfeeding mother should aim at consuming at least 600-800 milligrams of DHA in a day via natural sources or supplements.
For Kids
From the age of 1.5 years to five years of age, the DHA requirement for children is recommended as 600 milligrams of combined DHA plus EPA per day for a child weighing 20 kilograms.
DHA Rich Food for Babies and Kids
There are certain foods that are rich in DHA that you can include in your child’s diet. Here are some DHA rich foods for children of different ages.
1. DHA for Breastfed Babies
The best source of DHA for breastfed babies is from breast milk. The amount of DHA varies according to the mother’s diet and the quantity of omega-3’s and DHA she is receiving. It is advisable for feeding mothers to include fish, eggs, yoghurts and dried nuts in their diet to help babies receive DHA for a healthy development of the brain and retina of the eye. Formula-fed babies get their DHA intake only if the formula is fortified with it and so it is important to read the labels.
2. DHA Foods for Toddlers and Kids
There are a lot of natural varieties of DHA food for toddlers and kids. Some foods that could feature in your child’s regular diet are:
Salmon- it contains the highest content of DHA among the fish varieties and offers a healthy proportion of good omega-3 fats
Eggs contain small amounts of DHA naturally but you could also opt for DHA enriched eggs from chickens fed with a supplemented diet
DHA enriched yoghurts are a staple on the supermarket shelves and you could offer it to kids as a breakfast or light snack
Peanut butter could be substituted for the sugar-rich jam as a spread to morning toast for kids
Serve a handful of walnuts to your toddler as a delicious or healthy snack.
Formula milk now comes with fortified DHA as manufacturers have realised the importance of DHA. There are some products specially designed for children aged 1 year and above and you could buy them after checking the label thoroughly.
Are DHA Supplements for Infants and Children Safe?
Numerous studies have covered the effects of DHA supplements on childhood development. Some research has proven that supplements have an effect on the behaviour and cognitive abilities of a child. DHA supplements administered to children with learning disabilities helped them in developing their mental capabilities to a certain extent. However, due to lack of research, DHA supplements are not recommended as a treatment for any condition in children. It is possible to achieve the needed intake by eating fatty fish, nuts and eggs in your diet. Discuss with your paediatrician about giving your kids DHA supplements and take his advice about the best DHA supplement for toddlers.
Precautions to Take while giving DHA Supplements to your Child
Mercury levels prevalent in seafood, when consumed in excess, could have an adverse effect on the cognitive development of a child. It is then that parents resort to DHA omega 3 supplements for kids. Supplements containing fish oil are purified and devoid of contaminating metals or minerals. However, small amounts of toxins may still be present. For breastfeeding babies, parents can buy DHA drops for infants in India. But, an excess of fish oil could lead to bleeding in children. So it is mandatory that you seek consultation from the paediatrician before giving DHA supplements to determine the safe and effective dosage.
DHA is an important nutrient that fuels your baby’s optimal development. A well-balanced level of DHA has been linked to good retinal health and cognitive ability. The best way to include DHA in your child’s diet is to make every bite count by avoiding empty calories and choosing super-foods that will give your baby the necessary nutrition.

False Pregnancy: Reasons, Signs & Diagnosis
Pregnancy can be a truly joyous occasion with the expectation of a new baby being extremely blissful. Sometimes, there are cases there are some signs of that are indicative of pregnancy, but the woman is not pregnant. While this can be a stressful situation, it is best that you understand the full implications of this condition known as pseudocyesis.
What Is False Pregnancy Or Pseudocyesis?
Pseudocyesis is the medical term for false pregnancy. In these cases, the woman will experience many symptoms that indicate pregnancy, but there is not actual foetus developing. The symptoms include a growing belly, morning sickness, irritability, back pain, etc. This condition is also known as phantom pregnancy or hysterical pregnancy.
Surprisingly, this condition also occurs in men and is known as sympathetic pregnancy. It is mostly observed when the man’s partner is pregnant.
What Are The Causes Of Pseudocyesis?
While researchers have not been able to pinpoint the exact cause of pseudocyesis, there are reasons to believe that the reason could be either physical or psychological. Physical reasons could be ovarian cysts or tumours. Most evidence shows that pseudocyesis is common in women who have an intense desire to become mothers. The intensity sends a signal to the brain which makes it believe that the body is pregnant. The rest of the body receives signals and is prompted to behave as it would if it were pregnant.
Pseudocyesis occurs with many bodily systems working in tandem. The endocrine, cortical, hypothalamic, and psychological functions work together complexly. Stress on the ‘hypothamo-pituitary-adrenal’ axis is what leads to a phantom pregnancy.
Who Are At Risk Of Having False Pregnancy?
It has been observed that false pregnancies occur in certain types of cases. Women who have had the following conditions are more at risk than usual:
Multiple miscarriages
Infertility
Loss of a child
Mental breakdown
Women who want a baby with intensity are usually seen to suffer from a hysterical pregnancy.
What Are False Pregnancy Symptoms?
In such cases, women feel signs and symptoms of pregnancy or rather, what they think the symptoms of pregnancy are, which is why they believe that they are pregnant. False pregnancy signs and symptoms include:
Missed periods
Swollen belly
Weight gain
Enlarged breasts
Changes in the skin and hair
Frequent urination
Morning sickness
A feeling of foetal movement
Usually, the woman will notice a false pregnancy belly and think that she is pregnant. It is advised that pregnancy is established only after the required pregnancy tests.
What Are Its Characteristics?
The main characteristic of a phantom pregnancy is the absolute belief of the woman that she is pregnant.
Irregularity with menstruation is commonly seen in women who are suffering from a false pregnancy.
A majority of women with a phantom pregnancy will report that they feel foetal movement.
How Is False Pregnancy Diagnosed?
There are several ways in which a false pregnancy is diagnosed. Some of these include:
Blood test to establish pregnancy
Urine test to detect pregnancy
Though the previous two methods are commonly used to diagnose pregnancy, they are not a reliable false pregnancy test. An ultrasound test of the abdomen and pelvis area will have to be done to establish the pregnancy. In case of a false pregnancy, the ultrasound will not show up a heartbeat, neither will a foetus be seen.
Other conditions could be the cause of the symptoms of pregnancy such as obesity or ovarian cysts. Tests will have to be done to diagnose these conditions.
Treatment For False Pregnancy
There are two factors to consider when treating a false pregnancy. If the condition has been caused due to some physical or physiological reason, then this will be treated first. In the case of cystic ovaries, the treatment plan will include medication, lifestyle changes, and maybe even meditation.
If the false pregnancy is brought about by a psychological reason, then it will have to be treated with the help of psychiatrists and therapists.
In either case, the woman might have become invested in the idea of being pregnant. Apart from the pregnancy, she might have also prepared herself for raising a child. Once it is established that the pregnancy is false, the woman will need a lot of care. The dream of having a child is a very dear one, and having those hopes unfounded can be emotionally hard for the woman. It is best that you talk to your doctor and also with a therapist to make peace with this apparent loss.
A false pregnancy looks and feels like any other pregnancy but is in fact not a real pregnancy. There is no foetus and is caused by a number of factors. It is best that you confirm your pregnancy with ultrasound as it is the most reliable test for establishing a pregnancy. Read more

Hypertension in Children
A few moments with your little baby could prove to be a stress buster for you. However, these little bundles of joy could suffer from hypertension too. Alarming but unfortunately true! High blood pressure in babies could be a cause of concern for the parents, but shying away from the problem will definitely not help.
What is Blood Pressure?
This is pressure your blood exerts against the walls of the arteries each time your heart pumps blood as the blood travels to all parts of the body. Blood pressure is generated by the pumping action of the heart. Stress, anxiety and strenuous activity could increase the blood pressure.
How to Measure Blood Pressure?
Blood pressure is measured with an arm cuff that is inflatable and a gauge that measures the pressure. It is important to know how to read blood pressure in order to monitor it. The first, higher or upper number measures the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats and is called the systolic pressure. The lower reading measures the pressure in the arteries between beats and is called the diastolic pressure.
What is The Normal Blood Pressure for a Child?
Normal blood pressure measured for a child is based on three factors - age, gender and weight. A blood pressure of 64/41 in a newborn is considered as normal. For a child from 1 month up to 2 years old, it is 95/58. It is normal for these numbers to vary. Your doctor will determine if your child is suffering from hypertension if the reading is high after checking it three times and regular monitoring will be recommended by your doctor.
What is High Blood Pressure?
Under normal condition, the heart pumps blood all over the body through the blood vessels which widen and contract to maintain and regulate the flow of blood. When the blood pushes too hard against the blood vessels causing damage to the vessels, heart and other organs it is termed as high blood pressure. “Hypertension” means high blood pressure greater than 95 percent according to age, weight and height.
Causes of Hypertension in Children
Inherited/Genetic form or primary hypertension is the most common reason for high blood pressure. It is common in overweight and obese children and adolescents. The cause of primary hypertension is unknown. Kidney abnormality, narrowing of arteries to kidneys, congenital heart condition, rare tumours of the adrenal gland are some other causes of high blood pressure. These forms are called as secondary hypertension as underlying causes can be identified.
Symptoms of High Blood Pressure in Kids
Symptoms may not always be displayed however could be conspicuous in the following ways
Bluish colour of the skin
Shortness of breath
Slow growth and minimal weight gain
Recurrent urinary tract infections
Paleness and tiredness
Diagnosis of Childhood Hypertension
If your child is diagnosed with hypertension after three readings, your doctor may perform these tests to see if the underlying condition causing the increase in blood pressure
Blood test to check sugar levels, kidney function and the blood cell count
Urine test
Echocardiogram- a test to check the blood flow through your child’s heart in case there is a structural heart problem causing the issue
Ultrasound of kidneys
Ambulatory monitoring of blood pressure will be recommended by the doctor if your child’s blood pressure is high for over a year or Stage 1 hypertension over three clinical visits. In this case, the child will wear a device that measures their blood pressure throughout the day. This will help check if the pressure is high owing to temporary factors like being in the presence of a doctor.
Types of Hypertension
A systolic or diastolic blood pressure level over the 95th percentile or greater based on three separate readings on an average is defined as hypertension. Once diagnosed it is classified as follows to assist evaluation and treatment
Normal: A reading below the 90th percentile is normal
Pre Hypertension: A reading between 90th to <95th percentile or >or= 120/80mm Hg +
Stage 1 Hypertension: A reading between 95th to 99th percentile in addition to 5 mm Hg
Stage 2 Hypertension: A reading > 99th percentile in addition 500 Hg
*Please note these classifications are based on sex, age, height and weight measured on three separate occasion
+ If 120/80mm Hg is in the 95th percentile or greater then it is classified as hypertension.
Risks and Complications of High Blood Pressure in Children
High blood pressure increases the workload of the heart, squeezing blood amidst high pressure causing the pumping chamber of the heart to become enlarged and thickened.
The left side of the heart can become larger or thicker leading to left ventricular hypertrophy resulting in a heart attack.
Arteries in the kidneys could be damaged making them narrow and decreasing the blood supply to the kidneys hampering the function of the kidneys.
Arteries supplying blood to the brain could be damaged by the weakening of the walls causing bleeding and leading to a stroke.
It could cause damage to the eye by causing arteries to become narrow and twisted impairing vision permanently
How to Treat Paediatric Hypertension?
Work closely with your child to chalk out a treatment plan for treating hypertension. Some guidelines
Dietary Plan: The DASH diet includes eating less fat and saturated fats and substituting it with fruits, vegetables and whole grain food. Limit salt intake and work towards widening the food palate around the dietary regime.
Weight control: Obesity increases the risk of hypertension. Get your child to exercise regularly and eat appropriately to restrict weight gain.
Avoid Tobacco Smoke: Passive smoking could induce high blood pressure in your child so avoid smoking.
Medications: If lifestyle changes don’t help, your doctor will prescribe a combination of drugs as follows:
a. Diuretics to reduce the amount of fluid in blood by getting rid of excess sodium
b. Alpha blockers, calcium channel blockers to keep the blood vessels from tightening
c. Beta-blockers to prevent the body from making the stress hormone- adrenaline
Tips to Help a Child with Blood Pressure
Limit the amount of time your child spends on watching TV and gadgets
Make changes to their diet by limiting salt intake and reducing fried food
Get your child to exercise for a few minutes every day
Ensure you get your child’s blood pressure checked as recommended by the doctor.
How to Prevent High Blood Pressure in Kids?
Primary hypertension could be caused by genetic factors. But one can certainly try and prevent high blood pressure in kids. Reduce the time kids spend on watching TV and other electronic devices, monitor their diet and reduce processed and fried foods. Aim to control weight by regular exercise. Routine visits to the doctor will help monitor their blood pressure via the paediatric hypertension chart to single out any irregularities.
By working closely with your child and health practitioner and developing a comprehensive health plan you can definitely monitor and regulate your child’s blood pressure level and lead a healthy life.

Marital implications of Autism- a peek into special needs co-parenting and companionship trivia.
Marital implications of Autism and impqct of raising children with special needs are profound as much as we'd like to brush our concerns under the covers.
The author , Dr Shruti Gupta is a Consultant Radiologist but has a keen interest in advocating the cause of Autism and all the multiple aspects of special needs parenting through the power of the pen.
To begin with acceptance of the diagnosis of Autism lays heavy on ones psychological well being. The couple dynamics takes a new turn as we realize we're in a soup- no one has an idea how the soup got cooked and who is to blame! It's always easier to de- stress and redirect our woes when we understand the logic as to why life gave us these lemons .
The second part is that what's at stake here is not just a material thing- but the centrestage of our expectations and social framework- our child. Every parent holds a zillion dreams for their offspring and all that comes to a crashing halt momentarily until one can crack the ASD code.
Pent up emotions with a over burdened finances of relentless long term therapies , social isolation and anxiety all lead to emptiness and nervous breakdown. Vacations come at a price tag and are added stresses with an unpredictable child - so one chooses to evade them.
Some couples bond over the crisis and come out shining where as some reach a point of feeling disconnected in this journey.
Responsibility sharing is another important component where one has to understand that parental burnout is for real. Sharing responsibility can work wonders instead of expecting one parent to take up all the charge .
The vicious cycle of emptiness takes another turn when you have to deal with a spouse that can't accept ,move on and gear up to traverse the journey . When we need to battle for basic needs like therapy, time for one on one interaction with the kid , responsibility sharing ; it becomes toxic beyond a certain point.
Companionship can be a wonderful healing tool if used wisely along with being a caregiver to your special needs child.
Often, the burden of everyday challenges and no time for expression of love and affection creates a cold zone that escalates unknowingly to a point of no return for some .
With the right mindset and respect for your partner, one can make teamwork happen wonderfully. Embrace the journey of life designated to you. Take a break from the mundane routine and take out time to communicate. Compromise can be the spice of life when done mutually like a silent duel of understanding.
If things don't work out, always remember nothing is the end of the world. You are stronger than you believe- you can sail through anything.
Someone rightly said "there is a certain power in having nothing left to lose"
