Is Noodles Good for Babies & Kids?
Noodles have quickly become the staple food of our times. When we’re short on time and our children need something to eat, we readily opt for Chinese noodles for kids or one of the numerous other varieties in the market. But we do need to stop and think if they are the right choice for our children or not.
Is It Safe to Give Noodles to Babies and Older Children?
Many products in the market may show instant noodles for kids as a great choice for a snack. But most of these noodles are not a safe option for your children, and definitely not for toddlers and infants.
Why Instant Noodles are Harmful for Infants and Older Children?
Here are some reasons why instant noodles aren’t good for your little ones.
1. Food that is Highly Processed
Primarily made out of maida, instant noodles are processed for packaging. The focus is not on any vitamins or minerals, which leads to very low nutrition. Such food items are also termed as empty calorie consumables.
2. Trans Fats Carriers
For a longer shelf life, these noodles are steamed and then deep fried in oil during their processing. This leads to trans fats from the oil to become a part of the noodles, leading to weight gain in your child.
3. Wax Coating
Noodles need to look attractive and that is achieved by coating them with a layer of wax in the manufacturing process. Wax is quite harmful to children and is known to cause damage to the liver.
4. Food With Propylene Glycol
Noodles cannot be dry and need to retain their internal moisture. This is attained by adding propylene glycol to them. Kids are at a higher risk with this chemical since it gets collected very quickly within the heart, liver and kidneys, causing long-term damage to them.
5. Presence of Monosodium Glutamate
MSG, as it was famously abbreviated and reported in the news, is widely used in instant noodles for a very important reason. It highly enhances the flavour. However, this chemical is harmful to children as well as adults, since it is known to lead to brain damage.
6. Sodium as a Preservative
Noodles already contain salt in high amounts to preserve them for long durations. Sodium, the element present in salt, also directly affect the vital organs of the body and can cause damage when consumed excessively.
7. Presence of Harmful Chemicals
Apart from the aforementioned ones, various chemicals such as plasticisers and dioxin are present in the packing material of the noodles. While cooking the noodles, these chemicals might find their way into the water and are extremely harmful to consume, since they are carcinogenic.
Can Instant Noodles be Carcinogenic?
MSG, or monosodium glutamate, is the flavour enhancer in noodles and is known to cause cancer and brain damage in kids when excessively consumed. Dioxin and other plasticisers which form crucial components in the packaging of the noodles can also find their way into the final dish during the cooking process.
One may assume that their quantity of consumption isn’t high or that they take care while cooking, but certain factors which can cause cancer are not a risk worth taking.
What you Should Do?
As tasty as various noodle recipes for kids might be, after knowledge of their harmful nature, one needs to be more careful before directly serving them to your children.
On cooking the noodles, you can make sure that the noodles are drained well so that all the excess fat and salts are removed from them.
Instead of resorting to the packaged flavouring and seasoning that accompanies the noodle packets, try your hand at using home-made seasoning alternatives that do not contain salts and other chemicals in such quantities.
While cooking the noodles, go for a healthy oil alternative than using the standard palm oil. This imparts a different flavour to the noodles as well.
Since the entire noodle preparation does not inherently hold any nutritional value, you may try to add some chopped vegetables such as cabbage, carrots, peas, beans, etc. to make it visually appealing and tasty to consume as well.
While purchasing noodles from the market, keep an eye on options that have sodium and other fats in low quantities. Most of them are earmarked for adults so you might have to hunt a little more to get the right one to serve your children. There are tons of other alternatives such as soups or other preparations that you can introduce your child, too. However, if your child is already hooked on them, you can incentivise the serving of instant noodles by limiting the number of times you purchase them and dishing them out only on certain occasions.
Certain options of instant natural noodles are available in the market as well that are manufactured and processed using health-approved cooking techniques and make use of various natural ingredients for flavouring and different processes to preserve them in packets. Opting for rice noodles or organic vermicelli can be a smart shift to let your kids know that you are serving noodles, just of a different kind.

The Most Memorable Morning - From Hospital Room to Operation Theater!!!
It was a chilling morning of December and the blessings of Almighty was spreading everywhere as it was Christmas day. It was my second operation. My first child came to me through C-sec so my second one was obviously also going to be C-sec. We all were mentally very well prepared for my operation as it was planned, but still I had the same nevousness and excitement to go for a surgery.
My operation was timed at 9 so that morning was very special for everyone. We all woke up around 6 in the morning though I didn't sleep the whole night, and the nurse came and did the needful preparations for me.
It was around 8 in the morning when I got a call that now it's time for me to head over to OT. My elder daughter was super excited to meet her sibling. I got myself ready in hospital gown and prayed to God for all well being. I had all my close family with me at that time though it was chilly. There were innumerable thoughts in my mind while I was going from my room to OT, though my OT was only two rooms away from my room. The thoughts were, How will the surgery be conducted again? Will I be able to survive through all trauma? Will I have a girl or boy? If its a boy, how will my daughter react (as she wanted a girl)? Will I be able to manage two kids? How much it will pain after surgery? And I know everyone who has gone through this will be able to relate to my feelings.
I was then told to lie on the stretcher before the doctor came so that the assistants and the anaesthetics can do their job. Believe me surgery is not as painful as getting the catheter and the injection on your spinal cord, it's the worst part of C-sec. After all hustles of getting catheter and anaesthesia, I was told by my doc to breathe deep and then it all started. I could not feel the pain but surely I was feeling the scissors and the amniotic fluid going out. My doc during the whole surgery was talking to me so that I don't panic much. And then with one pull, it was 8:40 am and I saw my little angel crying. It was Christmas and Jesus blessed me with a baby boy. The moment I saw my boy and felt him, every confusion every pain and all nervousness just vanished away and then all I did was just gazing at my little one. Everything went well and we were home on the 6th day..
I hope every mom, having C-sec would relate to my feelings and I hope everyone enjoys this journey.

Starting Jan 2019, Give Up These Seemingly Harmless Habits That Are Shortening Your Lifespan
We live in a world where we believe everything that we do is right. In this day and age, watching TV shows for hours, partying till the wee hours of the morning, eating junk food late at night, or having that irresistible cup of chai at midnight come under the purview of fun in our minds. After all, life is all about having fun, right? That’s our mindset! However, these everyday habits that seem ‘FUN’ to us today, very slowly and without warning, take years off our lives.
7 Seemingly Harmless Habits That Can Shorten Your Lifespan
Find out what are these common unhealthy habits of yours that silently shave off years from your life. A devil-may-care attitude does not always bring good and these habits can seriously affect your health in the worst possible way.
1. Snacking at Midnight
We all snack at midnight - it reminds us of our good ol’ college days, doesn’t it? While midnight snacking is alright once in a while, treating yourself to sweet and salty snacks at odd hours on a regular basis can wreck your metabolism and increase your risk of developing diabetes and heart diseases. Eating late at night and sacrificing your night’s sleep may increase your triglycerides levels, thus increasing the risk of diabetes and heart diseases. Triglycerides are fats or extra calories that are stored in fat cells, and it is not easy to get rid of them. So, avoid eating late at night. If you feel extremely hungry, eat a healthy snack like makhana - but not too much. Also, get good sleep.
2. Binge-watching Your Favourite Shows
We all have done this and we still do - binge-watch our favourite shows on Netflix till our eyelids become heavy. Yes, we understand that some series have cliffhangers in each and every episode, and you and your partner can’t seem to give it up in between, but sacrificing your sleep for these series won’t do you any good. Binge-watching till late in the night can affect your sleep quality and make you feel tired all day long, every day. It may also affect your eyes, brain, and overall health. You may have too many shows to catch up on, but don’t watch them for 3 hours at a stretch. Limit yourself to just an hour of watching any show - just the way you set rules for your kids, set them for yourself too.
3. Eating Too Much SALT
If you are someone who loves to eat your daal, sabzi, or salads with an extra pinch of salt, you may be jeopardizing your health and reducing your lifespan - and we are not kidding, not in the least. Eating too much salt can damage your heart and kidneys. Consuming too much salty or processed foods is also one of the causes of high blood pressure. So, limit your salt intake; avoid sprinkling extra salt on cooked food.
4. Not Playing Safe in the Bedroom
Yes, nobody likes being advised on their bedroom habits, but it is just a gentle reminder to ensure that you stay healthy and happy for long. Having unsafe sex can compromise your health. Unprotected sex can put you at the risk of developing incurable diseases like HIV, AIDS, or Hepatitis. Although these diseases are no longer a taboo subject and can be treated to an extent, it is best to be on the safer side. So, make sure to use protection while having sex.
5. Biting Your Nails
It may seem like just another harmless habit which you may not accept in public, but it can actually reduce your lifespan. Nail biting can introduce bacteria (hidden under your nails) into your bloodstream and may cause ‘sepsis’, a life-threatening blood infection. So, the next time you take your fingers to your mouth to bite your nails, control the urge.
6. Skipping Your Breakfast
Who has the time for breakfast? You manage to get up at 7 in the morning and in the rush to reach your workplace on time, you miss the most important meal of your day. You may not be paying heed to this habit of yours now, but do know that in the long run, it will affect your health. A healthy breakfast can regulate your appetite for the day; if you skip it, you may end up eating more during the day, which in turn increases your chances of weight gain. And we all know that weight gain or obesity can lead to severe health complications, like high blood pressure, heart problems, etc. So, never head out of your house without having breakfast.
7. Poor Hygiene
Do you forget to wash your hands after you have been outside? If yes, then know that this small carefree habit of yours is ultimately reducing your lifespan. Not washing your hands properly or not using an antibacterial hand wash can leave you susceptible to germs and many food-borne illnesses. Similarly, not flossing your teeth can not only affect your oral health but also can affect your heart health. Gum diseases are linked to heart problems, and thus, may have fatal consequences. For most Indians, flossing is not a part of their daily oral care routine, but it should be because regular flossing can increase a person’s life expectancy by six years. Now, maybe you’ll give flossing a serious thought.
So, these are some habits that seem harmless but are rather detrimental to your health. This new year, give up these habits to lead a healthy life.
