12 Innovative Punishment Ideas for Kids
If you have growing children who are naughty and make you run around the house for several impossible things, it’s time you put your foot down and be a little strict with them before they become spoiled. And this means that sometimes, you will have to punish them if they misbehave, but by punishment, we do not mean that you beat them. Spanking and yelling can have negative consequences. It could cause behavioural and psychological problems in kids and, in the long run, it can result in low self-esteem, aggression, and stress-related issues.
As parents, while punishing kids, we often forget that punishment is not supposed to make your kids afraid of you; the only aim of punishing your child is to teach the kids the importance of good behaviour. So, here are a few ways in which you can punish your child but for his own good.
10 Creative Ways to Punish a Child
If you are wondering how to punish a child without losing your temper, here are the top 10 punishments for kids which are not harsh and will make sure that kids learn the importance of following the rules:
If you are wondering how to punish a child without losing your temper, here are the top 10 punishments for kids which are not harsh and will make sure that kids learn the importance of following the rules:
1. Time-Ins
Most parents would give their kids time-outs for bad behaviour, wherein the kids sit silently in a corner. However, sometimes sitting idle may not work well with children, as kids are often active. In such cases, parents can try ‘time-ins’ wherein you send your child to the naughty corner, where instead of sitting and doing nothing, the child gets an age-appropriate task. These tasks could include memorising a poem, writing letters of the alphabet, colouring a picture, or solving math problems. This will serve the purpose of the punishment while also giving the child something useful to do.
2. Exercise
This is a punishment that might be a tad undesirable for your child especially if he doesn’t like exercising, but it surely will teach the child the consequences of bad behaviour. For example, if the child leaves dirty dishes on the table after being told not to several times, you can make them do 10 squats or sit-ups. If their behaviour is bad in social gatherings or at other public places, you could ask them to skip a rope. Eventually, they will learn to exercise, which will be good for them in the future. However, do not overdo this as it could cause muscle fatigue in your child.
3. Make them do Chores
Make a list of 25 to 30 chores such as watering the plants, dusting shelves, drying the dishes, etc. Assign points to each task. For example, watering plants could be 20 points, doing dishes could be 40 points. If your child is becoming a spoilt brat, and his bad behaviour is getting out of your control, tell him that he needs to earn points (and his freedom) by completing his punishment. For example, if he gets into a fight with friends, he has to earn 150 points before he gets to play with his friends again. This way, you discipline him, and he will get better at the household chores to earn his privilege back.
4. Timer
If your child takes too long to finish a task, like completing homework or cleaning his room, set a timer. Tell the child that if the timer rings before they are finished, they will lose some privilege like permission to watch cartoons for two days or going out to play with friends for a day. This will encourage the child to complete the task on time, and gradually, it will become a regular habit.
5. Practise
This is particularly for children who have trouble with schoolwork or have been performing poorly in school tests. Make sure you help them get lots of extra practice at home. Print out worksheets and make your children work on those. You can explain your child that until the grades go up, they need to put in extra time practising that subject even if it means less playtime per day. This will help them learn the subject, and they will be glad that you are helping them instead of scolding them.
6. Punishment Jar
Discuss with your child and come up with a list of creative punishments. Next, write down these punishments on pieces of paper and put them in a jar. The next time your child behaves in an ill manner, ask him to pick a chit from the punishment jar and do whatever is written on it. These punishments should help children learn something new or utilise their time better. Some examples of these easy-to-do punishments include activities, like taking out the trash, doing the dishes, folding the laundry, organising their closet or pulling out weed in the garden.
7. Cool-Off Time
If your child is throwing tantrums or has done something wrong in the house, let them cool off by taking them out for a run or sending them to walk the pet, if you have one. This will help them calm down and also give them time to think about what they have done. Once they are back, you can explain calmly what they did wrong and how they need to correct it. The cool-off time will also help the parent calm down so that they can discipline the children without losing their temper.
8. Tidy Up the Clutter
This is an effective way to make sure your child tidies up after making a mess. For example, if your child leaves toys or art supplies in his room, take those toys away and hide them. Tell your child that he will lose the privilege of using those art supplies or playing with his toys until he cleans up after himself.
9. No-Fight Areas
No-fight areas are actually for those parents who have a problem with their kids constantly squabbling. Designate certain areas of the house as no-fight zones. Let them stick their favourite posters or cartoons in those areas and tell them that the rule is that they cannot quarrel in front of those images. This will reduce the number of fights and help them find a way to get along better. If they break this rule, set punishments for them. Here are some examples for punishing the children – hug their sibling for 5 minutes, or do their sibling’s chores for 2 days. This will help them bond better, and you won’t have a headache because of those constant fights.
10. Early Bedtime
This works well for both little and older children. Kids love playing and hate sleeping. So, if they misbehave, tell them that their playtime will cut down, and they will have to go to bed early. The days that they behave well give them extra playtime.
11. Role Reversal
You must be aware of the role-reversal game played for fun, but when making this work as a punishment, you will make your child do one of your chores that he finds boring, like cleaning, laundry, mopping, vacuuming etc. and you will act as the child. Some ground and time-off rules can be set in advance so that kids don’t go all out when the roles are reversed. They should know what is expected out of them if they are to enact a grown-up.
12. Marbles in a Bottle
You could keep a glass bottle or a jar of a preferred size with a mouth wide enough to drop marbles. Using a permanent marker and a measuring scale, make a mark after every 2 to 3 inches. At each mark, there will be a privilege the child will lose. Now, depending on the history of bad behaviour your kid has had, you can define how many marbles need to go into the bottle every time he makes the same mistake. And, every mark he crosses, he will lose a privilege. The child will be pushed to correct his behaviour at some point to avoid meeting the mark and losing his privileges.
Children need to be disciplined in a way that is not too harsh, encourages them to correct their behaviour and listen to their parents. Punishments should not be humiliating for children; instead, they should teach kids to make better use of their time and learn something new, while learning the value of good behaviour. So, try these tips for innovative punishments in this article and see if they help to improve the behaviour of your child.

Fun Facts About the Amazon River for Children
Here are 20 amazing facts about the Amazon river:
1. It is the biggest river in the world
While the title of the longest river in the world goes to the Nile, the Amazon is the biggest river in terms of how much water flows. The river is 6,992 km long and discharges about 209,000 cubic meters of water per second.
2. It is the widest and second-longest river in the world
With the Amazon River's widest point being 7 miles, it holds the record for the widest river on the planet. The Amazon is also a close contender for the longest river and is only shorter to the Nile by 62 miles.
3. The deepest section of the Amazon river is 100m
The deepest part of the Amazon river is around 100 m (330 ft). On average, the river’s depth varies between 20 to 50 meters (66 to 164 ft). The water levels can fluctuate depending on the season and rains.
4. People surf the Amazon river during the Pororoca
Twice a year, during the equinox and when the tide is high, Pororoca, a natural phenomenon, occurs. A high tidal wave is common at this time, surfed by many local and international visitors. The tide can go as inward as 800km.
5. It has over 1100 tributaries
Tributaries are small rivers or streams that flow into a large river. The Amazon has more than 1100 of these, out of which 17 are more than 1500km long.
6. Amazon river is home to the world-famous Piranhas
The Piranha fish, popularized by movies as vicious pack hunters, are found in the Amazon. The river is home to about 60 species of these omnivores fish, out of which only a few are known to attack humans.
7. Home to one of the world’s largest freshwater fish
The Amazon River is home to one of the world’s largest freshwater fish species. Called the Arapaima, these massive fishes can grow to 4 meters (15 ft) in length and weigh close to 200 kg (440 lbs).
8. Amazon was named after female warriors from the Greek mythology
Francisco de Orellana, a Spanish soldier, was the first European to explore the Amazon in 1541. He named the river after the female warriors with whom he has pitched battles on his visit. He compared them with the Amazons from Greek mythology.
9. There were no bridges on the Amazon river until 2011
Until a bridge was built at Manaus in 2011, the river had no bridges. One reason is that the size of the river made it impractical to construct one with old technology. The other is that the river mostly flows through sparsely populated areas, making it easier to travel by ferry.
10. It flows through three countries
As the Amazon makes its way across the South American continent, it crosses Peru, Colombia, and Brazil.
11. In 2007, Martin Strel swam the whole length of the river
Martin Strel is the first man to swim the full length of the Amazon River. In 2007 he took up the challenge and swum 10 hours a day for 66 days to complete the feat. The Slovenian athlete also had help from a crew on standby to rescue if Piranhas, or alligators, attacked him. Strel swam a total distance of 5,268 km to set his record.
12. It dumps 20% of the world’s fresh water into the Atlantic
The Amazon discharges so much water into the Atlantic Ocean that it changes the salinity of the water over an area of 2,600,000 square kilometers.
13. Amazon changed direction 100 million years ago
When studying the flow of sediments in 2006, Geologists realized that the oldest sediments were found upstream. Later, the river flowed in the opposite direction from East to West until the Cretaceous Period. The gradual change in direction occurred around 100 million years ago when the Andes rose.
14. It affects sea level in the Caribbean
The Caribbean Current picks up copious amounts of fresh water discharge into the Atlantic. The water carried to the islands is thought to increase the sea levels by at least 3cm.
15. It has an endemic species of river dolphins
The Amazon is home to a species of pink river dolphins found solely in that part of the world. These freshwater dolphins have evolved over the last 18 million years to thrive in the river.
16. A coral reef stayed hidden in plain sight at the Amazon delta until 2016
The massive discharge of sediment by the river kept a whole coral reef at the delta hidden until it was discovered and mapped in 2016. While there were hints of its existence way back in 1950, it wasn’t confirmed until recently. The reef is home to new species of sea sponges, exotic fish, sea stars, and other creatures. Stretching 1000km and covering an area of 9,500 square km, it is one of the most amazing Amazon river features to be discovered until now.
17. There is a hidden river below the Amazon
Amazon never ceases to surprise geologists. In 2011 it made headlines when an underground river that mirrors the Amazon 4km below the surface was discovered. Named the Hamza River, it is 4 times wider; however, it only carries a fraction of the water of Amazon.
18. The biodiversity supported by the Amazon river is not possible without the Sahara Desert
As proof of the interlinking of ecosystems on the planet, dust that is routinely carried by the Sahara desert is crucial for fertilizing the Amazon rainforest. The phosphorus from the desert sand is carried by high-altitude winds and deposited over the Amazon basin. Without the Sahara, Amazon wouldn’t be as lush as today.
19. Amazon has over 100 dams built across its length
According to a recent study, the Andean headwaters of the river have 142 dams that are used for hydropower and fishing. An additional 160 dams have been proposed to be built over the years.
20. It is a relatively young river
The Amazon region has Precambrian fragments and has some of the oldest rock formations dating back to 3 billion years. It flowed from east to west during the Proterozoic era and drained into the Pacific Ocean. The modern-day Amazon is estimated to be about 11 million years old. Compared to other rivers that have flown for hundreds of millions of years, Amazon is relatively young.
The Amazon river is a record-setter in volume, size, length, biodiversity, and many other parameters. As more facts are revealed about it river, it never ceases to amaze the people around the world.

Approaches to Learning: 3-6 years
By the time the child is 3 years old, he has pretty much figured how he wants to learn and has a set pattern or approach towards learning. Some learning skills are natural and inbuilt, but parents can further develop an approach towards learning – leading towards a better attitude towards learning, and thereby, allowing children to make the best out of the opportunities in education.
By the time the child is three years old, he knows what he wants and can express freely what he needs. When they play they learn to ignore distractions and focus on playing. Play is important for children at this stage because it allows them to learn and explore feelings even now. They even learn to complete a difficult task. When a child explores, he is using all his senses. By the time his language skills develop, he begins to ask questions and starts discussions. Creative thinking and problem-solving becomes a part of his life as a toddler.
How to Help Your Child Develop a Better Approach Towards Learning
1. Identify Interest
The child, at this stage, starts forming opinions and behaves consciously while choosing activities and playmates. An interesting and engaging activity can keep him focused for longer period of time even though there would be several distractions. Parents can identify what these activities are, so they understand what interests him most. Persistence starts building in when there is an activity that piques his interest and he continues to work on the puzzle, that has caught his interest, until it is finished. He will start being independent while eating, dressing and grooming. Allow your child to be independent as he chooses to be.
2. Questions Galore
Be ready for a lot of questions as your child gets curious. Seeking and engaging in sensory activities and other experiences, asking questions about how to get to a particular place, playing in new locations are some of the things he will do. Indulging in his questions and being patient while answering him, develops his desire to know more and further fuels his curiosity.
3. Reasoning and Problem-solving
Thinking and problem-solving is the highest at this stage. He is analysing his every move and trying to make life easier for himself. If one of his shoes doesn’t fit in one foot, he might try another foot to wear it. If he isn’t able to do a task, he might ask for help quite vocally.
4. Imagination Picks Up
Pretend play is probably what your toddler does from the time he turns one. He might be engaging in pretend play alone but now he will engage in pretend play with other children. Indulging in his pretend play does a lot to a child’s confidence. So if your son makes you a cup of tea, be gracious enough to pretend drinking it and commenting that it was the best tea ever. Creating interesting scenes of him being a doctor and you a patient is another such option. The more you encourage your child to use his imagination, the better attitude he will build towards learning.
Allowing your child to play is possibly the best ground you can set to improve his attitude towards learning – a way to learn how he learns. Read more
