Eating Eggs During Pregnancy
A woman's diet during pregnancy needs to be taken special care of, as it has a direct impact on the development of the baby. Eating nutritious food is important for the well-being of the mother as well as the child. Eggs are full of protein and other nutrients, and are usually a great food to include in people's diet. However, is it safe for pregnant women? Let us understand the benefits that eggs can have during pregnancy, as well as any side-effects that could occur.
Can Pregnant Women Eat Eggs?
“Is it okay to eat eggs during pregnancy?”, a lot of moms-to-be may wonder. While the answer to this question is yes, there are certain precautions which need to be taken before consuming eggs. Eggs are filled with minerals, vitamins, and good fat. Eating eggs in pregnancy will supply all these essential nutrients to the mother and the baby. Instead of eating raw or unboiled eggs, it is advised to eat boiled eggs during pregnancy, as this will eliminate any harmful bacteria that is present in the egg. Certain precautions when buying eggs, such as ensuring its freshness by checking the packaging date and buying them only from clean places will reduce the chances of contamination.
Benefits of Eating Eggs
Eggs are power-packed food items and a rich source of essential nutrients. The points listed below highlight the importance of eating eggs during pregnancy:
1. High Protein Content
Proteins are building blocks of the cell and assist in the development of the baby. Eating an appropriate amount of eggs will provide the baby with the necessary amount of protein to augment healthy growth.
2. Brain Development
Eggs contain choline, which is important for the growth and overall development of the brain. It prevents the baby from developing diseases like spina bifida and anencephaly.
3. Good Calorie Intake
Each egg contains about 70 calories and helps fulfil a part of the daily calorie requirement necessary for the baby and the mother to have good growth.
4. Helps to Regulate Cholesterol
Consumption of eggs will help to balance cholesterol deposits in the body. However, women should stick to egg whites and avoid eating egg yolks during pregnancy if they already have cholesterol issues.
5. Rich in Vitamins A, D, E, K
Eggs contain these four fat-soluble vitamins, especially vitamin A. Vitamin A is an essential nutrient. It helps in normal growth and development during pregnancy, including the developing lungs, kidneys, heart, eyes, and other organs of the fetus
6. Other Nutrients
Eggs are rich in antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin, which are important for eye and vision development. In addition, eggs also provide essential vitamins like Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, and Vitamin B2.
Risks of Eating Eggs During Pregnancy
While the egg is a rich source of nutrients to the pregnant women, it also has risks associated with it especially if not consumed correctly
1.Salmonella Poisoning
Raw, uncooked eggs can be host to a disease-causing bacteria called salmonella. This bacteria can cause food poisoning, which will lead to vomiting, diarrhoea, high fever, headache, abdominal pain, and dehydration. In some cases, these symptoms can be serious enough to cause preterm labour or even miscarriage. This condition is known as salmonella poisoning.
2.Other Risks
Consumption of egg yolk can also lead to difficulties in case the pregnant woman already has high cholesterol levels. Consumption of eggs can also cause allergies such as skin rashes, nasal congestion, hives and other problems.
How Many Eggs Can a Pregnant Woman Eat?
The suggested egg intake ranges from one to two eggs daily, depending on your cholesterol level. Each egg contains about 185mg cholesterol and the body needs around 300 mg daily. Eating eggs every day if one has high cholesterol can increase complications and should be avoided. The number of eggs to be consumed daily should be based on the cholesterol content in the remainder of your diet. To be on the safer side, the consumption of egg yolk should be limited to less than twenty eggs in a month. Most doctors recommend that pregnant women stick to only consuming egg whites.
How to Select The Right Egg
While picking up eggs, one needs to be sure that the egg is stored in a hygienic place and is not prone to contamination. Most countries will have a certification mark on the eggs certifying them to be fit for consumption and free of any bacteria. Even while buying other food items, one should make sure to avoid items that are egg-based, as the source of these eggs can't be verified.
What is the Correct Way to Store Eggs?
In order to keep the eggs free from salmonella bacteria, it is important to store them properly.
Always keep the eggs in a fridge, as it minimises the chances of spoilage.
Keep the eggs away from other food items and store them in a tray or the box other than the one in which they came in.
It is advisable to consume boiled eggs within three days.
Avoid using eggs with damaged shells, as they might contain dirt and bacteria.
Ensure that the eggs have not crossed their shelf life.
How to Cook Eggs
Cooking eggs during pregnancy is pretty much the same as when one is not pregnant. The idea here is to ensure that the salmonella bacteria are killed in the cooking process:
In order to cook an egg, take an egg and boil it for about for five to seven minutes. You can also fry the egg on both sides until the white is no longer translucent. The yolk should become completely solid. This process takes approximately five minutes. One should take special precaution while eating food that contains eggs and is not cooked at home.
How Long Do Eggs Last?
An egg is best consumed 28 days from the day it was laid. Boiled eggs should be consumed within two to three days after boiling, and food containing egg should be consumed immediately.
Suggestions to Avoid Bacterial Infections Through Egg Consumption
Handle the eggs with clean hands that are thoroughly washed.
Do not splash raw egg over other utensils or food items.
Use utensils which have been cleaned with hot, soapy water.
Do not place eggs with other foods, irrespective of whether they are cracked or not.
Clean the utensils, surroundings/kitchen platform thoroughly with warm, soapy water after cooking is completed.
An easily –available source of protein, eggs are a great addition to a pregnancy diet. Include them in your meals, keeping in mind the above points and make the most of their nutritious value. Read more

Prune Juice for Baby Constipation Relief
Caring for babies can be a difficult task, as they cannot communicate adequately. As a parent, you are required to pay constant attention to your child, to notice any irregularities in their behaviour and schedule. Since babies can only cry if anything is wrong, the task of finding the problem can be difficult.
Constipation is a common problem among infants, as they take time to adjust to the rigours of digestion. The child may be in a constant state of discomfort, and as a parent, you are expected to take notice of and understand the problem. Fortunately, though, constipation is not hard to tackle and cure, in the case of infants.
What is Prune Juice?
Prunes are officially called 'Dried Plums', are one of the best ways to ensure smooth digestion and relieve constipation. They not only help the child in matters of digestion but also have many other benefits to their health. The main symptom of constipation in both infants and adults is the inability to pass stools. You may find that the child has not had a bowel movement for a prolonged time, and the child may show this discomfort by crying at times. Prune juice can help relieve constipation and improve the functioning of the digestive system.
Prune Juice for Infant Constipation
In children, prune juice acts as a bowel irritant and helps to relieve the effects of constipation on the child. The juice is a natural laxative, so bowel movement is improved considerably. It is important to note that the juice must be unfiltered, to have the full effect of the laxative. Since constipation is caused due to weak muscle tone or the unavailability of water in the body, prune juice has a great effect on the child. For better results in the child, you must remember to give the child prune juice on an empty stomach. Apple juice and pear juice are good substitutes for prune juice if it is not available. However, these do not quite have the effect of prune juice on the child.
Causes and Symptoms of Baby Constipation
Constipation can be common during infancy and it is not hard to treat either. When the child is young, the digestive system is unable to handle any type of strain, and it can directly result in constipation. The common causes of constipation in babies are given here.
Most of the time, babies experience constipation due to the variations in their diet. This is common as infants must switch from breast milk to formula milk or solid food items when they are young. Variations in the diet can place a strain on the child, and cause constipation too.
In some cases, it can also be due to some underlying conditions in the child. This is rare, though most of the time, constipation is due to change in diet.
Dehydration can also cause constipation since the digestive system needs copious amounts of water for a smooth bowel movement.
Medical conditions like thrush, food poisoning or cold can have a direct effect on the metabolism of the child and thus, causes constipation.
While milk is good for the child, it does not contain enough quantities of fibres as required or smooth digestion. Fibres are important as they help in smooth bowel movement, so consuming an excessive amount of milk can also lead to constipation.
Anal fissures refer to tears in the skin in the anal region, which makes the process of passage of stool more painful.
Inactivity is another cause of constipation. Physical activities help the digestion process in the child and keep away any digestion problems like constipation.
It can be difficult to understand whether the child has constipation, especially during infancy. However, here are a few symptoms which can help you:
The child may be undergoing extreme irritability or pain, before going to the loo. This can clearly be seen on their face. In the case of infants, they may cry loudly during the time.
A constipated child passes stools only two or three times a week.
The child may be displaying a loss of appetite and an aversion to eating in general. The poo may be hard, pellet-like and even foul smelling.
In terms of outward appearance, constipation may cause the belly to bulge outwards and become hard.
Nausea and vomiting in the child are some other symptoms of constipation.
Digestive problems may affect other systems and there may even be urinary incontinence in the child.
Recommended Dosage of Prune Juice for Babies
The dosage of prune juice must be controlled considering the age of the child, for best effect. If the child is under the age of six months, diluting one or two tablespoons of prune juice with water or other juices to suppress the flavour is enough to help relieve constipation. For older babies, the dosage can be subsequently increased. However, you must never give the child more than 6 ounces of prune juice a day. It is better to consult with your paediatrician before settling upon the ideal dosage.
Should You Give Prune Juice Daily to Your Baby?
If you observe that your child has a recurring problem with constipation and he gets relief from drinking prune juice every day, you can administer it daily. The laxative effect can smoothen bowel movement, and act as a preventive measure against constipation. However, remember not to give more than 6 ounces a day, and dilute it with other juices or water with thrice the amount of prune juice for good measure.
How to Use Prune Juice to Relieve Constipation in Babies?
Prune juice must be given in a preset dosage to your child, which can be found out after consulting with a paediatrician. For young children, the dosage is small and requires greater dilution. However, the dosage can be increased as the children age. Prune juice can also be given as a preventive measure against constipation if you observe that your child suffers from constipation frequently.
Other Health Benefits of Prune Juice for Infants
Apart from being a laxative, prune juice also has many other health benefits, some of which are:
Regulates Cholesterol: Prune Juice has a large number of chlorogenic acids, which help reduce the bad cholesterol levels in the body.
Fights Cancer: Prune juices protect the brain from free radical damage, thus helping prevent diseases like cardiovascular damage and cancer.
Healthy Cardiovascular system: Prune juice helps stabilize blood pressure in the child, as it contains high potassium levels. It also keeps the heart healthy in the long run.
Prevents Diabetes: The number of natural sugars in Prune juice prevent any spiking of blood sugar levels and play a huge role in preventing diabetes at a young age. Teenage diabetes is becoming increasingly common, and its onset can be delayed using prune juice.
Prevents Anaemia: Prune juice also has a high iron content, which is important as it helps prevent anaemia. Iron deficiency can cause problems like fatigue and disruption in growth, and this is reduced by drinking prune juice.
Stronger Kids: Minerals found in plums and prunes, particularly Boron, help in strengthening bones and muscles during the period of growth.
Detox: The fibres present in prune juice encourage the body to produce more bile, which helps your child eliminate any harmful toxins from your baby's body.
Hair Care: Prune juice also has the minerals and vitamins required to keep hair and hair follicles healthy, making it shinier and more lustrous.
Are There Any Side-Effects to Giving Prune Juice to Babies?
Prune juice is a laxative, so excessive intake of prune juice is harmful to the digestive system of the child. It can cause diarrhoea and result in watery bowel movements if the right dosage is not given to the child.
Methods to Prepare Prune Juice at Home
To relieve constipation in your child, there are two methods to making prune juices at home.
Method 1
Prunes are nothing but dried plums, so making prune juice is not difficult at all.
How to:
Soak plums in the water for a day, until they become soft. The pits then need to be removed from the prunes, and then they are put in the blender. If needed, you can add some banana or apple juice for an extra flavour.
Method 2
Boiling prunes in the water is another method to make prune juice.
How to:
Put the prunes in a saucepan full of water and boil it over a medium flame. Remove the pits as the prunes cool down to room temperature and blend them using a food blender to obtain a smooth paste. Add an apple or other fruit juices to enhance the flavour.
Prune juice is a great digestive aid and acts well to relieve constipation in infants. However, you must consult with your paediatrician before deciding the dosage for your child, depending on the degree of constipation as well.

Does Low AMH Affect Your Chances of Getting Pregnant Naturally?
Many couples tend to believe that there is a strong link between low AMH levels and the natural success rates of pregnancy. But what do the AMH levels truly indicate? The 'Anti-Mullerian Hormone' is secreted by the follicles in your body, which are responsible for creating the egg reserves. Understanding the significance of their reduced levels and its impact on fertility can help you get a better picture.
What is Low Anti-Mullerian Hormone?
The Anti-Mullerian Hormone or AMH has a specific standard level based on the age of a woman. As the age increases, the AMH levels start decreasing, depending on the physical and biological constitution of the woman herself. If these levels reach below a certain threshold, it can impact the fertility in the woman substantially.
1. Standard AMH Levels Based on Age
When tracking the AMH levels, the values and their link to the fertility of a woman are usually dependent on the age of the woman. On a general basis, any presence of an AMH level under 1 nanogram per ml is not a good sign, since it usually marks a presence of reduced reserves of eggs. A general value of AMH based on your age is as follows:
Age (in years)
AMH value (in ng/ml)
25 – 30
5.4
30 – 35
3.5
35 – 40
2.3
40 – 43
1.3
43 and above
0.7
2. How to Detect Low AMH
There are blood tests that are meant for specific purposes, out of which some help in detecting the presence of AMH in your body. These can help you get a precise level of the hormone and detect low AMH if there is any.
3. Causes of Low AMH Levels
The reasons why a woman might experience low AMH levels are not deterministic. The causes of low AMH levels depend on a number of factors and can range from personal individual conditions as well as other aspects beyond our control.
Unsafe or inappropriate environmental conditions could expose your body to certain substances that may affect the levels of AMH in your body.
Genetic reasons are a major contributor as well. If your mother or other members of your family suffer from low AMH levels, chances are you might face the same as well.
The presence of endometriosis, causing the uterine tissue to grow outside instead of within the uterus, has also been termed to be a factor leading to reduced levels of AMH in the body.
The fertility of a woman reduces substantially as her age increases. While there are various factors that play a role in this, increasing age also brings down the standard levels of AMH in the body.
Progesterone and estrogen are just a few hormones responsible for maintaining fertility. If there is an imbalance in their levels or in other hormones, they could have an impact on AMH levels, too.
Despite ruling out numerous factors from age to environment as well as hereditary conditions, there might exist certain aspects that are unknown and have a substantial effect on the AMH levels of your body.
4. What Are the Symptoms of Low AMH?
Unfortunately, there are no typical signs or conditions that can clearly indicate the reduced level of AMH in your body. However, some women have experienced erratic periods or a total absence of them for a few months as a result of low AMH.
Does Low AMH Affect Fertility?
Low AMH does not indicate infertility but is a determiner of reduced reserves of ovaries. Fertilization may still occur successfully in certain cases, but with increasing age, the chances of miscarriage and abnormal embryo development are also higher.
What Are the Chances of Getting Pregnant With Low AMH?
The chances of achieving low AMH pregnancy success are not as dismal as they seem. Women under the age of 35 can still get pregnant with a low AMH level. This may not be true for older women since different factors that affect the fertility come into play as well.
How to Treat Low AMH to Get Pregnant
While there are a few natural ways that might be useful in treating low AMH, such as yoga or even acupuncture, there are two major medical approaches you can take that have shown strong signs in achieving pregnancy even with low AMH levels.
1. Opting for IVF as a Means to Treat Low AMH
IVF has been a popular procedure with various couples when it comes to treating infertility. It all begins by stimulating the ovaries since IVF highly depends on the collection of a substantial number of eggs. Stimulation injections are administered on a daily basis. These play a vital role in causing the ovaries to develop multiple eggs instead of a single one. A larger number of eggs increase the possibility of developing multiple healthy embryos at a later stage. The entire procedure may continue for around 2-3 weeks, where the stimulation frequency and strength is based on each woman’s biological aspects. Ultrasound scans help keep a check on the development of follicles, accompanied by monitoring the levels of serum in the blood.
Once the scans determine that the follicles have reached a good proportion, the procedure for retrieving the eggs is commenced. Since the eggs need to be released from the body, a stimulant is injected that kicks the body into the ovulation stage. It takes a day and a half to reach a stage where eggs can be collected. The entire process takes 15-20 minutes and usually takes place under light sedation to avoid feeling any uncomfortable sensations. Once the eggs are procured, these are fertilized with the sperm of your choosing, either in a petri dish or by injecting them right into the egg. The embryo, once formed, is transferred to the uterus and allowed to implant naturally.
2. Going Ahead with Eggs Procured From a Donor to Achieve Pregnancy
As is clear from the entire process of IVF, the most crucial aspect for it to be successful is by obtaining a good amount of healthy eggs from a woman’s body, after stimulation and ovulation. However, if the levels of AMH are extremely low, the number of eggs might be insufficient or their constitution may not be conducive to be fertilized or form a healthy embryo successfully. In such a scenario, opting for an egg donor is a better alternative.
The difference in the process between IVF and egg donation is quite minimal. Where eggs are obtained from your body in IVF, the eggs here are procured from a donor of your choice or from a clinic that stores frozen eggs for fertility purposes.
These eggs then undergo the same procedure as IVF, following the egg procurement. Your partner’s sperm will be used to fertilize these eggs and form an embryo, which is then transferred to the uterus.
How to Get Pregnant Naturally with Low AMH
While the above mentioned medical procedures do have a strong chance of helping you achieve pregnancy despite having low AMH levels, you can even attempt to get pregnant the natural way if you are up to it. Making certain lifestyle changes and diet adjustments can help you achieve success as long as you keep trying.
1. Opting for a Fertility Massage
A fertility massage is an option chosen by women even if their AMH levels are fine. This is primarily because the effects of the massage are all-encompassing and it helps create a conducive environment within your body for getting pregnant. By using specific oils and massage techniques, this fertility massage helps enhance the blood circulation in your uterine region, reduce the physical and mental stress, helps reset the hormone levels to a proper one, and even set the menstrual cycle at a proper frequency.
2. Eating Wheat Germ on a Daily Basis
Women looking to get pregnant are strongly advised to have a good intake of wheat germ, whether in the form of oil or even pearl tablets. This is quite beneficial for men as well. Wheat germ consists of selenium and zinc, both of which play a vital role in improving the condition of the sperms as well as fallopian tubes in the body. With a stronger sperm and an easier way to transport it to the egg, your chances of pregnancy can increase as a result.
3. Consuming DHEA Tablets Multiple Times in a Day
The increasing age of a woman can impact her chances of getting pregnant in a major way. One of the key factors that are affected as a result of ageing is the ovarian reserve. Increasing age tends to reduce the number of eggs as well as their quality, which can make it difficult to achieve pregnancy. DHEA or dehydroepiandrosterone hormone is responsible for replenishing the hormonal reserves to a healthy level. By maintaining an intake of 25mg DHEA tablets thrice a day, you can help improve the egg quality or even support an ongoing IVF process as well.
4. Undergoing Acupuncture Sessions
There is no conclusive evidence that proves a connection between acupuncture and fertility improvement, but many women who have opted for it have walked away with great results. Acupuncture helps trigger certain areas within the body and optimize their functioning. Certain acupuncture specialists have a good understanding of the bodily areas responsible for fertility and can help you restore it to a good level once again. Even women opting for IVF should give acupuncture a try for a few months before going ahead with the procedure.
5. Yoga Exercises to Control Your AMH Levels
The reduction in AMH levels is also dependent on your mental makeup. Being stressed and tired can seriously bring down your AMH levels considerably. Engage in yogic exercises, deep breathing, and muscle relaxation poses, as these can help restore calm and quiet to the mind, and work in healing your body from within.
Many couples often wonder if people with low AMH conceive naturally or should they opt for advanced medical procedures to make it happen. The right decision for you can be determined by attempting natural techniques while keeping an open mind for IVF or egg donation as a last resort.

Natural Ways and Foods to Increase Breast Milk Supply
Breast milk contains nutrients that help develop the brain and the overall growth of the newborn. Decreased breast milk supply will make the new mom worry a lot as your baby likes to feed often. This is so because Breast milk is digested quickly. However, this does not mean that you are not producing adequate milk.
While breastfeeding, it is also essential to check whether the baby has latched on properly; sometimes, when your baby doesn't latch properly, they refuse to feed. Today, we have a list of foods and a few simple methods that can help you increase your breast milk supply.
Foods That Increase Breast Milk:
1. Garlic
2. Green Leafy Vegetables
3. Sesame seeds (til)
4. Fenugreek Seeds
5. Oatmeal
6. Drumsticks
7. Carrots
8. Milk
9. Salmon
Methods to increase breast milk supply:
Try using a Warm Compress: low blood circulation in the breasts is the main reason behind inadequate breast milk supply. If you feel this, you can use a warm compress on your breast before feeding sessions to increase the blood supply. Or pour some warm water over your breast while taking a bath; this will help to increase breast milk supply.
Avoid pacifiers and bottles: Pacifiers and bottles can lead to nipple confusion. Your baby may find it hard to latch on to your breast if they are used to sucking from bottles. You must give your baby only breast milk and avoid any other type of foods till they attain six months of age.
If you find a decreased breast milk supply, don't stop breastfeeding and make your baby latch correctly. Breastfeeding 8 to 12 times a day can enhance milk production significantly. You can also try Shatavari powder( satavarex) in milk.
Staying hydrated is essential to improve milk production, so remember to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Happy parenting!

Post-partum Health - the Do's and Dont's
The postpartum health of a mother is vital in terms of physical as well as mental health. Often mothers take a lot of care before delivery, but after giving birth, everything changes. The entire focus shifts to the baby, and the family also concentrates more on the health of the baby in comparison to the mother's health. As the female gives birth, everything changes. From the bodily structure, the resources of the mother, to the mental abilities.
A new mother can take few simple steps for her better well-being. In terms of physical health, the steps one can take are:
EATING RIGHT: New mothers should concentrate on eating more fruits. Nuts and seeds mix can be your best friend. These days so many trail mixes are available on online websites. They can be munched whenever you feel hungry. For midnight snacking, one can have roasted fox nuts which another source of calcium and boosts lactation. (Just microwave for a minute and it is ready to eat).
HYDRATION: Drinking a lot of fluids is mandatory. 8-10 glasses are required as breastfeeding the child takes mostly water. Coconut water is also beneficial; It is nourishing for the body as well as hair & nails. For odd times, iced tea can also be considered. Mornings can be done right with green tea with honey. It has antioxidants that boost the digestive system.
SLEEPING PATTERN: The new parents can sleep turn by turn for the first few months till the parents get used to the baby's schedule. Also, try to sleep while the baby is sleeping leaving all the distractions behind, like binge-watching shows. As the female body has gone through so much while giving birth, rest is the key to getting back on track quickly.
TAKING CARE OF HAIR: Since the body is high on pregnancy hormones, the first 1-2 months post-delivery goes normal. Slowly the hormones goes back to normal which results in significant hairfall for most of the women. But this can be taken care of quickly through regular oil massage with virgin coconut oil or onion oil. One can also put fenugreek seeds in the oil for better results. Curd, green tea, coffee beans are also beneficial ingredients present in your kitchen that can help a lot. Additionally, using very minimal or no chemicals is advisable till hairfall stops.
SELF CARE: New mothers don’t get so much time for self-care, but it is required. One should atleast take a bath every day and wear fresh & comfy clothes. All these steps help in maintaining health and hygiene. Additionally it gives personal satisfaction and immense pleasure.
For mental health, one should few precautions like the following:
SELF TIME : The new mother should take out one hour for herself everyday to relax her mind and do whatever she wants. It is easy to say but challenging to practice. Still one should take out time because it is necessary. Most women get irritated and depressed due to a lack of time and understanding with their partners.
TAKE HELP: Adapt to the idea of taking help from family members. As the newborn needs constant attention, so does the new mother. By taking assistance, you become much more relaxed as it eases out the mind.
All in all, a new mother must take care of her post-partum health!
