Facts and Information About Clouds for Children
There are many different types of clouds that from due to different atmospheric conditions. Here are some essential facts about some of the most commonly seen types of clouds.
How Are Clouds Formed?
Clouds are extremely tiny droplets of water or ice that are so light that they appear to float in the air. When explaining cloud formation for kids, it’s important to give them a sense of what tiny droplets mean. If you have ever used your flashlight in the bathroom after a hot shower, you would see millions of tiny little droplets of water floating around in the air. These are similar to the droplets of water that make up clouds.
Clouds form when warm air closer to the ground that holds plenty of moisture in the form of water vapour rises up due to buoyancy. As the warm air rises higher into the atmosphere it expands due to lower pressure and cools. At one point when it’s cold enough the moisture in the air begins to condense into microscopic droplets of water around dust in the air. These droplets are so light that rising air currents are powerful enough to hold them in the air for a long time. When a large mass of air condenses, it takes the familiar appearance of a cloud. How high the clouds form, where they form and what type they are depends on factors such as the moisture content in the air, winds, vertical air currents and the amount of heat present in the ground.
Why Are Clouds White?
When learning about clouds, one of the first questions that come up is why they are white. Clouds are white because they scatter sunlight in all directions and sunlight is white. In clouds that contain microscopic water droplets that are less densely packed, there’s enough light through scattering to illuminate the whole cloud. Rainclouds with bigger droplets of water scatter most of the light at the top and much of it doesn’t reach the bottom giving them a darker appearance below.
What Are The Different Types of Clouds?
Clouds can be mainly classified as low-level (0- 2000m), medium-level (2000-8000m), high-level (5000-12,000m) moderate- vertical clouds (0-3000) and clouds with vertical development. Here are examples of some of them:
1. Stratus Clouds
These are low-level clouds that form above ground to altitudes of 2000m. Stratus clouds are often seen as blankets of clouds covering the whole sky. They are more prominently seen in mountainous regions where they tend to form over valleys with the hills rising above them. One interesting stratus clouds for kids fact is although they rarely produce rain, their cousins- the nimbus clouds such as nimbostratus and stratocumulus can produce anywhere from heavy rains to a light drizzle.
2. Altostratus
These are medium-level clouds that occur between 2000m- 5500m and usually appear to stay static in the sky with patches of blue sky in between the cloud breaks. The clouds are made up of both water droplets and ice crystals. Although they don’t produce rain, they appear before or after a storm. Altostratus clouds have a close cousin called Altocumulus which are not as flat as altostratus but fluffy in appearance.
3. Cirrus Clouds
The cirrus clouds are thin hair like clouds that are high-level clouds forming above 8000m. They appear to spread out in the direction that the high altitude winds blow them and are usually made up of ice crystals. Cirrus often indicates pleasant weather but their cousins, cirrostratus and cirrocumulus are an indicator of an approaching storm or change in weather.
4. Cumulus
These are fluffy, cotton-like clouds that you see on a warm sunny day. They come in all kinds of shapes and sizes and usually have a flat base with a fluffy top. They float over 1000m above the ground and grow into thunder clouds if the weather conditions are right.
5. Cumulonimbus
These are clouds with vertical development that bring heavy thunderstorms, snowstorms, lightning, tornadoes and hailstones. The towering ominous thunderclouds can unleash a tremendous amount of energy in a short time which can often be destructive. They have a flat base at heights over 1000m and vertical structures spanning up to 15,000m!
Why Do Clouds Float in The Sky?
Clouds normally form in air masses that are warm and rising up. Warm air is lighter than colder air and hence rises to the top. The microscopic particles of water that make up clouds are so light that even though they eventually fall to the ground, the upward air currents are strong enough to keep them afloat. When the particles clump together to form larger, heavier droplets, the buoyant forces are no longer able to hold it up, and it falls as rain. To put it across in the simplest way, clouds float in the air because they are lighter than air.
Other Fun Cloud Facts for Kids
Although they are extremely light, because of their large volume, clouds can contain millions of litres of water.
Fog is a simple type of stratus cloud that forms close to the ground.
Condensation Trails or ‘Contrails’ are humanmade clouds. They are long thin white lines formed out of the exhaust of jet aeroplanes flying in high altitudes and are mostly made up of ice.
Most clouds form in the lowest layer of the atmosphere called troposphere. Some rare types are known to form higher in the stratosphere or mesosphere.
Clouds also exist on other planets in the solar system. Venus has clouds made of sulphur dioxide while Jupiter and Saturn have clouds made of ammonia.
Clouds are interesting weather phenomenon that has been a source of wonder for generations. While they come in undefined shapes, they have definite principles of physics that govern their formation and behaviour.

How Having Just One Child is Enough!
Years ago, when I was just a naïve young girl, I had many
ideas about what kind of family I would have when I grew up and got
married. I will find a wonderful
husband, get married, and have two children – a girl and a boy. I would have
even been happy with two daughters because I love little girls.
Flash forward to when I was 25 years old and expecting my
very first child. The pregnancy was not what I thought it would be. It was
filled with complications right from the beginning, and it ended with a
C-section, where I had my daughter at 37 weeks, barely weighing 2 kgs.
But that was not the end!In the following months, I had several postpartum complications ranging from a C-section incision infection
to a secondary hemorrhage a month after my delivery that almost killed me. It
led to me having to have a D&C. To top it all; I had crippling Postpartum
Anxiety that kept me awake at night for weeks.
I was terrified at the thought of having had to go
through another pregnancy which we had planned for in another 3 or 4 years. I
did not want to go through all that again, but I had to have another kid
because that was what we were told to do, right? Most of my complications (IUGR,
Pre-eclampsia) had a very high chance of recurring in my subsequent pregnancy too.
Not to mention my fragile mental health.
Almost a year into motherhood, one evening, I was suddenly
hit by the realization that I DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE ANOTHER CHILD. These thoughts
changed the whole picture I envisioned for my future family. I kept pondering
this for the next few days, and I approached my husband with this. He said that
my physical and mental health wellbeing is more important than us having
another kid. He felt that if it could compromise my health if I get pregnant
again, our daughter is more than enough. He wanted me to be happy and healthy
for my daughter.
His overwhelming support lifted an enormous pressure on my shoulders, and I started enjoying motherhood a lot more than I had before.
It helped a lot with my Postpartum Anxiety too. This does not mean I didn’t
feel guilty. I wouldn't say I liked that I might not give my daughter a sibling and was scared
that she might become spoilt if she was an only child.
So I did my research about having single children and how to
deal with their needs and wants. Not all only-children get lonely, and they do
not get spoilt if we teach them the correct values. I had to unlearn society's notion – you need to have two children to have a perfect
family. I learned that families come in all shapes and sizes and that only-children
families are perfect too.
When people ask me about my second kid, I tell them that I
am happy with having a single child. Their reaction? Shock and
disapproval. As if I am harming my child by denying her a fundamental right to have a
sibling. They try to talk me out of it, telling me to ‘think’ about my child as
if that is not what I do from morning to night. They say that I have to have a
son. They think that no family is complete until they have a son.
This was not what I wanted, but I had to be happy and
healthy and ‘present’ for my daughter. I still get hit by a wave of guilt now
and then. I know that it might take me years to be completely okay with my
decision. I wish society would stop shaming mothers for their
choices regarding the number of children they want to have. Many women are
pushed into having more children until they have a son because society thinks
daughters are not enough. How many mothers have compromised their health
by having more children? How many women out there have had more than one child
to keep people around her happy but are struggling inside? Sadly we would never
know because we are taught that it is shameful and selfish to stop with just
one child.
But I can see that times are changing. More and more women
prioritize their health and have a say in how many children they
want. We still have a long way to go, but we are getting there.
