10 Home Remedies for Stomach Pain in Toddlers
Kids have stomach pain every now and then. This is because they tend to eat anything and at any time. But there are several other reasons which may lead to stomach ache in toddlers. However, the good thing is that it can be treated with some simple home remedies. There are many effective natural remedies for stomach ache that can provide relief to your tot in no time.
Natural Remedies for Stomach Ache in Toddlers
If you have experienced sleepless nights because your child complains of tummy pain, then don’t worry. Here are some remedies for stomach pain in toddlers. These remedies will cure his stomach pain and soon he will feel better.
1. Keep your child hydrated.
Offer any unsweetened form of tea like mint or ginger ale tea to your child to keep him hydrated. This will soothe the aching nerves of his stomach and help lower his stomach pain. Avoid giving him dairy products or fried/oily products until he feels better. You can give him toast or oatmeal when he feels hungry. If his stomach pain is accompanied by vomiting, do not feed him any solids; let him be on a liquid diet until the pain subsides.
2. Try warm compress.
One of the safest and the most effective remedies for stomach ache is warm compress. The best thing about warm compress is that it does not have any side effects and it provides quick relief. If you are using a heating pad, select the lowest level of heat and keep it on your child’s abdomen. But don’t place it directly. If you don’t have a heating pad, use a bottle filled with warm water; wrap it in a cloth and your warm compress is ready. Make sure that the heating pad or the water bottle you use is warm and NOT hot. You don’t want to hurt your child. Warm compress is very effective. The heat will relax his muscles and provide relief from stomach pain.
3. Apply asafoetida paste.
Asafoetida or hing is also an effective remedy for stomach pain in toddlers. It eases stomach pain by aiding the release of gases from the body. Mix some hing powder in water to make a paste and apply it around the child’s belly button. Ensure that he is lying in a horizontal position while you do so to make sure that the paste does not enter the navel. Mixing hing powder with olive oil and massaging the baby’s abdominal area with it for some time can also provide him with quick relief.
4. Make him eat yoghurt and other probiotic foods.
Probiotic foods are also known to help soothe stomach pain. For example, yoghurt, which has probiotics in it, can provide relief from diarrhoea and cramps. Yoghurt is also full of good bacteria which compensates for the loss of microbes in the gut. Fenugreek seeds also help treat stomach pain in toddlers. Grind a handful of fenugreek seeds, add in the yoghurt, and give it to your child if he has stomach pain. Instead of giving any heavy foods, give him khichdi or plain rice. Khichdi is light on the tummy and will soothe your child’s upset tummy.
5. Offer herbal teas.
Herbal teas can are also known to soothe tummy aches in toddlers. Grate some ginger and let it soak in warm water for some time. Then strain and give it to your child if he is two years or above. If he is below two years of age, you can apply ginger juice around his navel area. You can also give him a cup of tea with a few mint leaves and a few drops of lemon juice in it, as it helps ease stomach pain. Mint can help remove harmful bacteria from the gut while lemon can help with constipation. However, before giving herbal teas to your child, do consult with a doctor.
6. Give him honey.
Honey is a good source of carbohydrates, sugars, and antioxidants. It can be given to babies by adding it in herbal teas or in warm water. Kids also love eating it simply. However, do not feed honey to your child if he is younger than 2 years.
7. Massage him gently.
The aching nerves and muscles of the stomach area can be relieved by enhancing the blood circulation around it and this can be easily achieved by giving a gentle massage. Using your palms and fingers, gently massage in circular motions in the clockwise direction around the navel area of your child. Massaging from the chin downwards to the lower portion of the abdomen can also provide relief.
8. Try foot reflexology.
There are many nerves in our hands and feet which when pressed lightly can have a therapeutic effect on the specific areas of the body. Hold your child’s left foot with the palm of your right hand. With your left hand under the ball of his foot, apply a steady pressure using your thumb. Apply pressure on the central arch of his left foot for a minute and repeat this 4-5 times. Do this before the meal time for an immediate effect.
9. Get him moving.
Although it is not a home remedy, it can help. Any action that can help in stimulating the gastrointestinal tract is recommended if your child complains of a stomach ache. Moderate activities like walking and running without any twisting or turning can provide relief to your little one’s stomach.
10. Try the BRAT diet.
If you are parents to a toddler, you must be aware of the BRAT diet. However, if you aren’t, then find out what it is, because it can provide relief from an upset stomach. Bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast (BRAT) diet can provide your kiddo much relief if he has diarrhoea. These foods do not contain any spices, hence won’t aggravate the condition. Furthermore, this bland diet is perfect for kids when they are sick and want something to eat that agrees with their taste buds.
How to Prevent Stomach Ache in Toddlers
If your child constantly complains of stomach pain, you should not ignore it. There must be something wrong in his diet and you need to remedy it. Here are some tips that you can follow to prevent this problem.
If your child has a stomach ache because of constipation, include fibrous foods in his diet.
Do not overfeed your child. Instead of giving him three big meals, let him have small frequent meals.
Encourage the habit of washing hands before eating right from an early age in your toddler as it will prevent your child from contracting bacterial infections.
Don’t make him eat before bedtime as it could lead to indigestion.
Stomach ache is a common problem in kids. If your tot has a stomach ache, make him lie down on the bed in a comfortable position. Lie down next to him and read out his favourite stories to divert his attention. You can also try the remedies mentioned above to provide him relief from stomach pain. However, if these remedies fail to work and your child is unable to move or the pain is accompanied by a fever, take him to a doctor and seek medical attention at earliest.

16 Best Home Remedies for Blocked Nose in Babies
A cold and a blocked nose can make your baby cranky and uncomfortable, and give both of you sleepless nights. If you don't wish to consult a doctor just yet, try out these home remedies to provide relief from a blocked nose.
Natural Remedies for Blocked Nose in Infants
In India, many parents resort to home remedies as they are not only inexpensive but also safe, unlike antibiotics (which may have side effects) and over-the-counter medicines (which should not be given to infants). Here are some of the best home remedies for nose congestion in infants.
1. Focus on breastfeeding your baby. Breast milk has essential nutrients and antibodies that develop and strengthen your baby's immune system. A good immune system will help your baby fight against a cold and cough.
2. You can also put a few drops of breast milk into your baby's nose to open up the nasal passage.
3. You can make nasal drops for your baby at home. To 8 teaspoons of water, add ½ a teaspoon of salt and mix well with a sterilised spoon. Pour a few drops into your baby's nostrils once the solution cools down.
4. Eucalyptus oil is used to treat cold and open up a nasal blockage. Sprinkle a few drops of the oil on your baby's pillow and bedding. Since the smell is too strong for infants, eucalyptus oil shouldn't be directly applied to the skin.
5. Elevating your baby's head with the help of a pillow helps the mucus flow out, thereby opening up the nasal passage.
6. Keeping your baby hydrated is important, more so when she's down with a cold. Fluids dilute the mucus and relieve stuffiness in the nose. You can also feed warm and unsweetened apple juice and chamomile tea (without honey) if she's older than 6 months.
7. Clear chicken soup is another useful home remedy for a cough and cold. Chicken contains anti-inflammatory properties that clear up the nasal massage as well as improve your baby's immunity.
8. In case the nasal congestion is severe, turn on the shower and let the hot water create steam in the restroom. Then, take your baby into the bathroom for a few minutes. You can also give him a bath with warm water.
9. A nasal aspirator can do wonders for a stuffy nose. Just squeeze the air out of the aspirator gently insert the tip into your baby's nostril. Then slowly release the bulb so that the mucus gets sucked into it. Do the same with both the nostrils. After every use, wash the aspirator and sterilise it.
10. A cool mist humidifier will create moisture in the air and clear out the congestion in your baby's nasal passage.
11. In case you don't have a humidifier, keep a bucket of warm water in her room while she sleeps. The warm water will help to ease your baby's stuffy nose.
12. A mustard oil massage is another effective way of treating a cold and nasal congestion. To 1/4th cup of mustard oil, add 3-4 cloves of roughly crushed garlic and methi (fenugreek) seeds and heat it. Once the oil cools down, massage your baby with it. Apply the oil to the nasal bridge, forehead, cheekbones, chest and the back with soft and gentle hand movements.
13. Dried-up mucus is one of the main culprits of a blocked nose. Wet a cotton swab with warm water to clean the insides of your baby's nostrils. Do it gently and with care to avoid hurting your little one.
14. Lay your baby across your knees and pat her back gently. This brings the mucus up from the chest and she can cough it out easily.
15. Give your infant a warm compress. Soak a small piece of cloth in warm water, squeeze out the excess water and place on her nose and cheeks. Repeat this a few times.
16. Roast a few garlic cloves with ajwain until the aroma starts to waft out. Tie these up in a potli and keep it a safe distance from your little one. The fumes will provide relief from a stuffy nose.
When Should You Visit the Paediatrician?
If home remedies aren't working for your baby, she may need a medical check-up. Consider visiting a paediatrician if:
The cold doesn't clear up within three weeks
Your baby takes quick breaths
She is running a high temperature
She coughs up blood
Your baby's condition seems to be getting worse
Your little one has a persistent sore throat
You see her wheezing and her skin turning pale or blue
How Does the Diagnosis Happen?
A paediatrician will check your baby's temperature and observe her breathing pattern. For more clarity on your her health condition, an X-ray may be suggested.
Home remedies for cold, cough and nasal block are practised in every Indian household. However, we must understand that all cases of nasal congestion cannot be cured through home remedies. Especially, care and precaution should be taken in case of babies. In such a case immediate visit to a doctor is a must.

10 Important Things to Look for While Choosing a Sunscreen
Cleansing, toning and moisturising are three important steps to skin care. However, if you are planning on stepping out in the sun for a shopping date with a friend, a brunch with your kiddo or simply hanging out with your girl gang, it is important to protect your skin with a good sunscreen lotion. Your skin needs protection from the harmful UV rays of the sun and for that, you need to apply a good sunscreen. So, if you are wondering what all factors you should look in a sunscreen, well, this post discusses all this and more in detail!
How to Choose the Right Sunscreen for You
Sunscreen is available in a lotion, cream and gel form and if you are looking for tips on how to buy sunscreen best suited to your requirements, well, here are few pointers that you can consider before sunscreen selection or picking up a sunblock for yourself:
1. Choose a Good Brand
Your skin is a reflection of your personality and you must make sure you take utmost care of it. The same applies when it comes to picking up sunscreen for your skin. There are many brands offering various kinds of lotion. You should choose a renowned brand or you can also choose any good international brand that has European or FDA approval.
2. Opt For a Cream-based Sunscreen
There are many kinds of sunscreens available, but our recommendations are those that have a creamy base rather than sprays or powders. This is because powdered or spray sunscreens contain nano-particles which may enter the bloodstream and may lead to various health issues or complications. Therefore, always stick to the ones with a creamy base and stay away from other kinds.
3. Expiry Date
Always check the date of manufacturing and expiry that is mentioned on the sunscreen lotion. The expired products not only lose their efficacy but they also tend to irritate or harm your skin. Always pick up a product that is from the fresh stock because the ingredients in a sunblock tend to break easily and become less effective as the time passes. Do not stock up on sunscreen, but buy a new one only when you are almost through with your previous one.
4. Look for Ingredients
One of the most important aspects when you look for sunscreen lotion is the ingredients used in it. If you are allergic to certain ingredients then you must check the label for it. One of the most dangerous ingredients is oxybenzone, which disrupts the hormonal balance and can cause an allergic reaction too. Also, pick up a sunscreen that contains natural or herbal ingredients rather than loads of chemicals in it.
5. Look for the SPF Factor
You may have heard about SPF in sunscreen and are probably wondering which SPF to choose for sunscreen. Whenever looking for a sunscreen, you must look for a good SPF or sun protection factor. Sun protection with SPF 15 will provide good protection, but if you are planning to be out for long hours, choosing one with a higher SPF that is SPF 30 or higher may be a good choice. Also, do not forget to re-apply your sunscreen if you are in the sun for a longer duration.
6. Sweat and Water Resistance
Look for a sunscreen that is sweat and water resistant, especially if you are planning on going to a beach or for a swim. Water resistant sunscreen does not mean waterproof, but it will give you good sun protection even when you are in the water. Usually, the labels will state for how long the protection will last in the water. However, for best results, it is good to re-apply sunscreen every two hours.
7. Choose a Broad Spectrum Protection
You must look for a lotion that offers broad-spectrum protection, which means protection against UVA and UVB rays. Where UVA rays are responsible for causing premature ageing and skin cancer, exposure to UVB rays may lead to sunburn and skin cancer. Therefore, it is important to look for a sunscreen that provides protection against both these factors.
8. Price Is Irrelevant
Most of us believe or think that higher the price of a product, better it is but that is not the case. Sometimes high-end brands may not provide you with good results in comparison to affordable ones. It will be a good idea to compare the products by reading the reviews or even asking friends or family members for reference before investing in good sunscreen lotion can help choose a good lotion.
9. Choose According to Your Skin Type
If you have normal skin, you can pick up the lotion, cream or even gel based sunscreen formula. However, if you have very dry skin then it will be a good idea to stick with a good cream based sunblock. On the contrary, if you have oily or acne prone skin, choosing water or gel-based formula will be good for your skin. If you have any doubts regarding which sunscreen to choose, you can always seek assistance from your dermatologist.
10. Child-friendly Sunscreen
Just like adults, kids needs sun protection too. However, it is not good to use the same sunscreen lotion for your child that you are using. Because adult lotions contain strong ingredients that may be suitable for adult skin but the same may cause harm to your child’s delicate skin. Buy a kid-safe or kid-friendly sunscreen for your child as these lotions are sans benzophenones and para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) and are gentle on a child’s skin.
Tips and Safety Precautions to Remember While Applying Sunscreen
Here are some safety precautions or tips that you should follow before applying sunscreen lotion:
Apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before stepping out in the sun.
If you are outdoors in the sun for extended periods, make sure you re-apply sunscreen after every two hours.
Make sure you apply sunscreen to all the exposed areas such as the face, neck, back of the ears, hands, arms, legs, etc.
Sunscreen can be applied before applying makeup too.
It is more important to apply a sunscreen well, because a good lotion applied in a haphazard manner will yield you less effective results in comparison to much less protection sunscreen applied in a nicer manner. Therefore, make sure you apply your sunscreen liberally and well before stepping outside in the sun.
Sunscreen is a mandatory requirement in your skincare regime; choose the one best suited to your requirements!

Travelling alone with your toddler/ infant : planning and packing tips
Sometimes being a parent can be overwhelming. For me that time was the thought of travelling alone with my 1.5yr old daughter. The whole idea of an overnight flight journey with no one else to helpout was really a scary thought. Then i just reminded myself that a lot of parents do it and i can do it too. Being organized reduces half of your stress and planning is the key to a smooth travel experience.Planning your flight: Always plan your flight time which will coincide with your baby's nap time. This will ensure you get time to settle in the flight and have a meal while the baby sleeps. It also gives you a break from entertaining the baby in long haul flights.Packing for the travel: Packing for a baby can be really tricky and challenging at the same time. i always prefer a sack for my cabin luggage, it is easy to carry and one can find stuff without actually needing to open the bag fully. Always pack in a chronological order , items least needed (like books, clothes, toys ) go at the bottom and items frequently needed( snacks, milk, diapers, wet wipes) go on the top. Always carry a small blanket for your baby to snuggle in. Carry food for atleast 2 extra meal times as flights can get delayed and a hungry baby can be very difficult to handle. And last be not the least dont forget to carry your baby's favorite toy.Clothing: Wearing the right outfit is often ignored. It is the key to a comfortable and hassel free travel experience. One tends to put on layers of clothing onto our babies during travel. This makes the babies irritated and crancky. Always dress your child in comfortable light clothes (you can always carry a jacket and socks if it gets cold). Always carry lip balm & moisturizer as it gets really dry in flights. A small plastic bag to put in soilt clothes and a set you extra clothes for you too.Accessories: A baby carrybag/ lightweight pram is always helpful and for parents a small sling bag which can hold your travel documents and wallet. You can always as for help: Never shy away from asking help. Things can really become difficult sometimes and how much ever you plan there can be times when you need help. Ask for it, there is nothing wrong if you ask someone to help.Travelling with my baby was fun and once i got over my fear i started loving it. It gives you time to bond with your child and have a wonderful time just you and the baby. Sure there are challenges but the experience is just wonderful. Always remember you know your baby the most so go with your insticts and you will never feel it to be difficult to travel alone. And yes dont forget to click pictures as it will be a fun journey.Happy travels!! 0 to 3 months old fine motor development milestone and developmental delays
Fine motor skills is the use of small muscle movement that occur in the finger in coordination with the eyes. Hand are the "tools" most often used to do work, play and perform any task which is needed in day to day life.
One would be surprised to know that fine motor development also starts as soon as baby is born. A new born generally holds his hands clenched, if finger is inserted in the child's hand, his grasp will be so strong that we can actually lift him. Grasp is the initial stage of fine motor development in babies.
A baby who is slow or not able to grasp may have certain problems like poor developed muscles of the hand, closed fist due to spasticity, thumb in palm attitude or ape thumb deformity, increased flexor/ extensor tone.
Intervention or how to deal with it:
Babies who are slow to develop sometimes have little or no grasp reflex and are slow to learn to hold things, for such babies these activities may help:
If baby keeps her hands close, stroke the outer edge of the hand from little finger to wrist, this causes the baby to lift and open her hand and to grip your finger.
Move babies arm in elevation or rotate it in cyclic motion this will facilitate hand opening.
Give tummy time under your supervision, place baby on his stomach with his weight hearing on elbows with hand open. This will facilitate hand opening, then hold shoulder forward/ backward, keeping the head upright.
Facilitate eye contact (same level to your babies eye) with shining objects or toys or sound producing objects or toys.
Make some sound and encourage baby to look and reach towards the direction of sound.
The development of grasping skill provides an excellent example of how motor skills start at gross and move towards mastery of fine motor skills. A delay in development of fine motor skills will have an impact on bbaies brain development, social interaction and communication. Read more

Is Being a Parent Simple?
Anita was married for 6 years now and had a son. Her husband, being mostly busy, left her to be the sole caregiver. Unfortunately, things weren't going really well between both of them. There was a lot of pressure on her due to single parenting and handling her husband's routine spurts of anger. But she had found peace in that child, who was the only purpose of her existence.
In the middle of all this, she got to know that she had conceived yet another time. She was disheartened, as she didn't want to carry this new life. She wasn't ready to take it up anymore. How will she manage it all alone? All this was sweeping in and out of her mind. So she decided to get the child aborted, but couldn't gather enough courage to visit a doctor for that. Hence, she tried everything she could to naturally abort the child. However, God had other plans and the child stayed.
This child was born, but with infantile hypertension and an unhealthy heart. He grew up to be a very sensitive individual and suffered from a serious mental disorder. The house was not normal anymore. It echoed with screams and yells of raising a grownup child. Contrary to his brother, he could not lead an absolutely normal life. Though both children had the same parents and a similar upbringing, yet their lives were poles apart.
Why did destiny play this game? Was it just God's wish or as parents there was a role to be carried out? Does our responsibility towards a child start after he is born or after he is grown up or much before the baby is conceived?
As parents, we need to think with what thoughts we are creating a new life because this new life comes forth with the same energies that we transmit to it. We feel contented providing them with all the basics of life and the motivation to become someone, but do we ever look back and see if that's ENOUGH?
Share your thoughts as to what you think is a parent's role before even conceiving the idea of bearing a child...!!
