Watery Discharge During Pregnancy
White watery discharge, also known as vaginal leucorrhoea, is common among women. It begins at the onset of puberty and lasts until the end of menopause. The amount of discharge varies from woman to woman and usually increases during the menstrual cycle. A watery discharge signifies a healthy vagina as it helps expel bacteria, keeping the vaginal area free from infection. However, sometimes, vaginal discharge can be dangerous during pregnancy. Read on to learn more about watery discharge. Find out what it is and why it happens.
What Is Watery Discharge During Pregnancy?
The fluid that comes out of the vagina is known as vaginal discharge. Vaginal discharge is usually white or clear. If you are pregnant, you may notice watery discharge, but there is nothing to worry. Watery discharge during pregnancy usually depends on the stage of pregnancy. Based on the stage of your pregnancy, the characteristics and implications of a watery discharge may differ. Here is a categorised list of the same:
1. Watery Discharge in Early Pregnancy
Clear discharge during early pregnancy or first trimester has a slightly pungent smell. It resembles the slimy discharge of menstrual cycle and can stain your underclothes. This watery discharge appears due to the sudden surge in estrogen levels that increases blood flow to the vaginal area leading to an increase in other secretions.
2. Watery Discharge in the Second Trimester
In the second trimester, vaginal discharge is milky egg white in colour and consistency. It is considerably more frequent than the discharge in the first trimester but is perfectly normal as it occurs due to the hormones cascading through a woman's body. However, if you notice bloody discharge or foul-smelling discharge in your second trimester, it can indicate a problem. In such a case, you should consult a doctor immediately.
3. Watery Discharge in the Third Trimester
At this point, the discharge can exhibit itself in many forms, based on colour, odour, frequency, amount, and presence of blood. A heavy flow near your due date might imply preterm labour or even water breaking.
Is it Normal to Have a Watery Discharge During Pregnancy?
It is quite common for a pregnant woman to have a watery discharge from the vagina. The amount of discharge will only increase as the pregnancy progresses. Read on to know about normal and abnormal watery discharge in detail.
1. Normal Watery Discharge
Most instances of watery discharge are perfectly normal. You have nothing to worry about if you experience the following:
Leucorrhoea
As mentioned, this is the standard fluid discharge. It is thin, clear, and watery in consistency. It can be perceived as one of the first symptoms of pregnancy as it shows up at the very beginning after conception.
Bloody Show
In your final week, the discharge might include blood and mucus, which implies that you are ready to go into labour within a few days. The mucus is part of the plug that blocks your cervix, preventing infections. This is known as a bloody show.
Amniotic Leakage
When the watery discharge in the third trimester of your pregnancy resembles urine and has flakes in it, it might be your amniotic fluid leaking. This is a perfectly ordinary occurrence; you need not worry about it. However, if you notice a greenish watery discharge in copious amounts, it may indicate that your water bag has broken and the baby might have passed the meconium. In this case, you should rush to the hospital.
2. Abnormal Watery Discharge
Sometimes, a watery discharge is associated with several other symptoms which can irritate you. In such cases, a watery discharge is abnormal and can be a sign of one of the following:
Premature Labour
Noticing a small amount of blood in the last week of pregnancy is normal but if it is excessive, it might indicate preterm labour. Please contact your doctor immediately if this occurs.
Yeast Infections
A yeast infection can happen any time, but it may cause a lot more discomfort during pregnancy. Besides having greenish-yellow watery discharge or thicker white curdy discharge, you may experience pain while urinating. Yeast infections can also lead to irritation or redness in the vaginal area.
STIs
Watery discharge can even occur if you contract sexually transmitted diseases during pregnancy. Any disease can affect your health and immune system. It can also affect your fertility levels. Hence, consulting a doctor would be the best option if you notice watery discharge frequently.
Vaginosis
Caused by bacteria, it is accompanied by discharge, itchiness, and burning sensation while urinating. In addition, the discharge has a foul odour. It needs to be treated immediately as it might lead to premature labour or even miscarriage.
What Causes Clear, Watery, or Jelly-like Discharge in Pregnancy?
The increase in oestrogen hormone and increased flow of blood to the pelvic region causes the mucous glands in the cervix to produce extra mucus. In addition, the cervix and vagina may also shed dead cells, which may lead to white jelly-like discharge.
When Is Watery Discharge a Sign of Concern?
If the watery discharge is accompanied by cramps in pregnancy, it should not be taken lightly. If it is green or yellow in colour and has a strong and foul odour, you should consult a doctor. You might also experience redness, itchiness, or swelling in the vaginal area.
Important Facts About Watery Discharge in Pregnancy
There are several signs and symptoms associated with a watery discharge during pregnancy. Some of them are stated below:
A watery discharge may occur consistently throughout the entire pregnancy period.
Watery discharge can be yellow, green, pink, white, or brown in colour.
It may occur during and after sexual intercourse in pregnancy due to a congested cervix and ectropion.
When Does Watery Vaginal Discharge Indicate an Infection?
As watery discharge is common during pregnancy, most women can’t tell the difference between normal watery discharge and abnormal watery discharge. It can be difficult to say that watery discharge is due to an infection. But if you observe any of the following things mentioned below, it might help to consult your gynaecologist.
Excess watery discharge along with lower body pain, especially after the 27th week of pregnancy.
Sudden changes in the colour or smell of vaginal discharge.
Itchiness, inflammation, redness, or painful sensation in your vaginal area.
Persistent fever.
Difficulty in urinating.
What If the Discharge Is Smelly or Changes Colour?
Watery discharge is usually white in colour and has a mild smell. If these features change drastically, it might be due to underlying problems such as premature labour or infection. Remember to carefully scrutinise your discharge for any changes.
When Is the Discharge Heavy?
The amount of watery discharge increases during periods and as the pregnancy progresses. You can expect a much higher amount of fluid secretion near the end of your third trimester.
Is Watery Discharge During Early Pregnancy a Sign of Miscarriage?
If you are experiencing vaginal watery discharge during your first trimester that is pink in colour, it might indicate a miscarriage. The colour will be due to blood, clots, or pieces of tissue from the placenta, uterus or amniotic sac.
How to Treat Watery Discharge
The treatment for the issue depends greatly on the underlying condition. The problem of watery discharge can easily be treated at home by making a few changes in your lifestyle. But sometimes, it may require medical intervention. Here’s how watery discharge can be taken care of.
1. Medical Treatment
As explained, you should consult your doctor if you observe any changes in your vaginal discharge during pregnancy or if you experience certain associated symptoms. Your healthcare provider might take swabs from your vagina for assessment, and provide you with treatments as well as steps to keep your vagina healthy and clean.
2. Remedies to Try At Home
Maintaining proper hygiene can keep your vagina clean and healthy. Here is what you can do to ensure good vaginal health:
Keep a stock of panty liners and sanitary napkins and use them as required. Avoid using tampons as they might irritate or cause toxic shock.
Practice Kegel exercises to strengthen your vaginal walls and to prevent urine leakage.
Maintain hygiene to lower the risk of contracting any infections. Wash your vaginal area with clean water.
Wipe your genital area from front to back after urinating or passing stool.
Steer clear of processed food and opt for fresh fruits and veggies instead. Follow a healthy diet and avoid eating sugary foods as they might lead to yeast infections.
Wear cotton underwear as cotton is a breathable fabric. Your underwear should stay clean and dry.
Drink plenty of water to flush out toxins from your body regularly.
Include yoghurt in your diet to encourage the growth of good bacteria as it is a probiotic.
Use pH balanced vaginal washes intermittently to prevent abnormal bacterial growth.
Things to Remember
Taking a few precautions will help you avoid complications that can come with watery discharge.
Get Tested Regularly
If your watery discharge is accompanied by symptoms of an infection, you might have to get medical treatment. In addition, consume foods rich in probiotics to avoid the occurrence of yeast infections.
Maintain Hygiene
Keep your vaginal area clean. Avoid using a bar of scented soap or spray to clean your vaginal area. If you have foul-smelling vaginal discharge, using a spray won’t help. Wash your vaginal area with warm water and wear clean and comfortable underwear.
Change Your Underwear Regularly
Protecting your panties with a liner or simply changing underwear every time you experience a discharge will keep your vaginal area fresh and lower the chances of contracting any infection.
Keep Track of Your Vaginal Discharge
Always keep track of your vaginal discharge. Notice the colour, consistency, amount, and odour of the discharge, so you can tell if it changes suddenly. Also, wash your vaginal area properly after sexual intercourse and urinate often.
Trust Your Doctor
Listen carefully to your doctor, as she will be able to guide you the best through your pregnancy journey. If necessary, note down the instructions and tips given by him so you don’t miss out on important things.
Can You Prevent Watery Discharge?
If your discharge is normal, then there is no need for any treatment. However, taking the precautions mentioned above will help treat or prevent any abnormal watery discharge.
When to Consult a Doctor
In some situations, urgent medical care is required to treat any underlying problem. In any case, experiencing excess discharge in the third trimester is a serious matter, especially if you experience pain and discomfort. Don’t hesitate to contact your doctor even if you are not entirely sure about the situation.
Any sort of watery discharge is bound to be unpleasant, but it is completely natural most of the time. By now you must have understood the differences between normal and abnormal watery discharge. Pay attention to the changes your body goes through. Furthermore, follow the tips mentioned in this article to ensure that you have a normal watery discharge. However, if you notice abnormal discharge, don’t hesitate to consult a doctor.

How to Handle a Fussy Eater Toddler
Most moms of toddlers have probably been through their fussy-eater phase. It is a frustrating experience for moms of fussy-eating toddlers to get them to eat. This article explains how you can improve the food habits of a fussy-eater toddler, the reasons why toddlers may be picky and how to deal with them.
Why is your Toddler a Picky Eater?
If you have a 3-year-old fussy eater, do not worry too much. Toddlers are usually capable of regulating their food consumption. Some of the reasons why toddlers can be fussy eaters are:
Picky eating is a way for the toddler to assert her independence. She may be testing the limits of the parents’ authority by deciding what she wants to eat.
Solid food is still a new thing for toddlers. They require time to get accustomed to the different tastes, colours and textures of foods.
Toddlers can move around more and are interested in exploring their environment. They do not like to sit for too long in one place, and this includes mealtimes.
Toddlers may not require the amount of food you think they do. The rate at which they grow slows down a little after the first year. Hence, they may eat a little less than they did earlier.
It is usual for toddlers to vary their eating patterns often and also change their mind about what foods they like. They may refuse to try new foods because it looks different.
How to Introduce New Foods to a Fussy-Eater?
It can be challenging to plan meals for picky eaters. Here are a few suggestions that may help make mealtimes with fussy-eating toddlers less stressful:
Provide an assortment of healthy foods during mealtimes. The toddler will try at least a couple of the options if you place several before them. Creating a big deal about new foods makes toddlers refuse to try them.
Ensure that the child has regular mealtimes. This sees that the toddler does not snack excessively. Ideally, there should be 3 regular meals with a couple of snacks in between meals. The snacks should be healthy options.
Introduce new foods one by one, not all together. The new food should be given in small quantities. Include one standard favourite food of your toddler’s along with the new food.
If you give a toddler a new food when she is really hungry, she will be more likely to try it. For example, you could introduce a few slices of new fruit at her regular snack time.
Make mealtimes calm and free of distractions. Make sure devices like iPads, mobiles and TVs are switched off. Eat together at the table.
Do not offer food with high sugar content to make a toddler eat more. Encourage her to try different things.
If a toddler does not want to try new food, do not force it on her. The toddler may not like the colour or texture of the food. Some toddlers refuse food because they associate it with a negative experience they had, like an illness.
Serve small portions of food. The portion size of food for toddlers should be a quarter of an adult portion. Stick to 1 or 2 tablespoons of rotis, rice or vegetables.
Add nutritive ingredients to food your toddler likes. For example, add pureed carrots to dal or fruit bits to cereal.
What you can do to Get your Toddler to Eat a Wide Variety of Foods?
Below are a few tricks on how to get your toddler to try a wide variety of foods.
You can make the dish attractive and colourful. Arrange it in interesting shapes that the toddler will find appealing.
You can try and make mealtime fun by giving the child vegetables with a tasty dip or ketchup. The familiar ketchup will tempt the toddler to try the food.
Give the child healthy options too much on at snack times. For example, cucumber slices or fruit are popular with toddlers.
You can try freezing or cooling foods to make it exciting for toddlers. For example, you can freeze pulpy fruit juice, thaw it a little and turn it into an icy slush that the toddler will love.
You can try ideas like making your own breakfast. For example, you can let the toddler choose from a variety of cereals, toppings and milk or yoghurt.
Other Tips to Manage Fussy-Eating Habits in Toddlers
Dealing with fussy toddlers is a task that requires immense patience and understanding. Mothers often get stressed when their toddler is a fussy eater. Here are some tips to manage fussy eating in toddlers:
Take the toddler seriously when she shows clear signs of being full. For example, stop forcing her to eat if she pushes your hand or turns away when offered food, refuses to open her mouth or swallow, attempts to spit out or throw up the food.
Do not give the toddler anything to eat right after mealtime. For example, toddlers should not be given juice or milk for up to 2 hours after a meal.
Allow the toddler to eat slowly. If rushed, toddlers’ appetites become reduced.
Have meals together as a family.
Foods for Fussy-Eating Child
Here are some foods that you can try for fussy-eating toddlers:
Pomegranates: These nutritious little red seeds are popular with kids. Toddlers love their colour and sweetness.
Tomato Soup: Most toddlers love the tangy flavour of tomato soup, even if they do not like tomatoes. Make it interesting by adding animal or alphabet shaped crackers.
Sauteed Broccoli: Well-cooked broccoli can have a mushy texture. Try lightly sautéed broccoli. The toddler will like its crunchy texture and little tree-like appearance.
Fruit salad with whipped cream and honey: Get together some chopped fruits of various colours, add a dollop of whipped cream on it and drizzle some honey over it. Toddlers will love this healthy snack.
Hummus: Kids like the creamy texture of this chickpea dip. The hummus can be used as a spread, dip or even as a filling for sandwiches.
Peas: Lightly steamed peas sprinkled with a little salt will make an interesting dish for toddlers.
Pineapple: Toddlers love the flavour, but dislike the texture. Try giving them pureed pineapple mixed into a cup of yogurt. You can slowly move on to pineapple bits, and finally to actual fruit pieces.
Cucumbers: Toddlers love the crunchiness of cucumbers. Let them munch on cucumber slices in between meals.
How to Tell Whether your Kid is Getting Enough Food or if he isn't growing?
Each child grows at a different pace. Do not fret if you feel like your toddler is not growing quickly. Monitor the toddler’s monthly weight and height measurements. You can talk to the doctor if you are concerned that there is not enough weight gain in your toddler.
However, you should avoid hovering during mealtimes and forcing the child to eat more. This will only make a picky eater much fussier.
When to Consult a Doctor?
If a toddler’s height and weight are appropriate for her age, and she eats an adequate amount of food, there is no need for concern about fussy-eating habits. A doctor should be consulted only in case the child has a medical condition or is not maintaining the height and weight appropriate for a child her age.
Fussy-eating is a passing phase in most toddlers and will be gone before you know it. Deal with the picky-eater with patience and understanding. The eating habits of a fussy-eater will definitely improve over time.

First Trimester of Pregnancy
Being a mother is the most beautiful feeling and so is being pregnant for the first time. When I found out that I was pregnant, the first thing that came to my mind was that suddenly my responsibility had increased. Earlier, I was a happy-go-lucky girl but now I had a responsibility.
As days passed, morning sickness, fever, and weakness hit my day to day life. I realised that being a mother is not easy. There was another life growing inside me and it was my responsibility to take good care of both of us. Whatever I ate was directly linked with the body of my baby. During pregnancy, our body secretes hormones due to which make us sick, weak and many many more things.
One drastic change that I noticed in myself was mood swings. I get angry on silly things, got frustrated with people around me, and sometimes I cried. On some days I felt happy that I was going to be a mother. The one person who dealt with my mood swings was my husband. He always used to listen to my silly talks. I used to get angry at him. Some days, I used to say to him why was he loving me. I told him to let me be alone and that I would go to my mother's house. I needed a break, etc. But he never got angry with me. Instead, he dealt with my moods swings and took good care of me. He used to take me for outings, movies, and shopping. I was happy that he loved and cared about me so much. And as days passed, we got to hear the first heartbeat of our baby. That was one of the best feelings in the world. We were soon going to be parents.
The first trimester is full of ups & downs and mood swings make the journey like a roller coaster. But you can be happy if you get love, care, and affection of your beloved one (husband). You need some care, affection and some hugs & kisses. If the mother is happy the baby will be happy too. So it is our responsibility to be happy at that moment. Since pregnancy lasts for 9 months, it is important to be healthy & happy.
To overcome mood swings, I would like to suggest the husbands of expecting moms that please do take your wives for shopping, outings, lunches or dinner. You can take your wife for a walk or come early from the office and spend quality time with her. The nine months of pregnancy are not easy and it is tough for a woman to take good care of your wife. Text your wife during your free hours. I am sure that even a single text will make her happy. And If she will be happy when the baby will be happy. So enjoy your time together and take care of yourself.

How to Raise Your Child to Be Independent, Happy, and Confident
"Please repeat". "You are wrong, listen to me", these short sentences may be a small statement for us but it causes a powerful impact on our children. By saying these, we are smothering the thinking, questioning, curiosity and independent cognitive skills of our budding wonders.
Instead, we can rephrase the same by saying: you are doing so well, can we try a new way now or I am all ears to your point of view but after I have listened to you would you like to give me two minutes.
Instead of trying to force-feed the daily routine homework or classwork, try to give a break to your child by letting them play with their age group children develop their own language, their secret codes, their way of speaking, and thinking.
Then you may intervene and say "Oh that's an interesting thing to do. Have you learnt it from your friend? Will you teach me how to do this?". By saying these simple sentences, your little wonder will develop a sense of achievement and accomplishment.
Instead of saying - "just finish this fast", try and say, "would you like to take a 5-minutes break before you try again?". "Why don't you teach me your way, then 'Ill try introducing you to how I have learnt from my parents."
From my experience, I have seen my child stay happy when she spends more time in physical activity than she spends quality time on her academics. Like we try and nourish our babies with proteins, carbohydrates and vegetables, we should strive to nourish their minds with fun, frolic, poems, stories, hide and seek, playground squabbles and lots of monitored playdates. We remember our childhood filled with lots of stories, fun, and frolic with siblings and cousins. Don't our children deserve a slice of that similar piece of heaven? We can try and create that similar atmosphere with a little extra effort on our part.
A healthy mind and healthy body make a healthy soul and a happy future. Every day we should remind ourselves that the key to a happy child is a happy and patient parent or parents.
Happy parenting!
