10 Effective Remedies to Get Rid of Mosquitoes at Home
It is impossible to enjoy an evening out on the patio or open the windows to let in some cool evening breeze if your house is invaded by mosquitoes every day. Mosquitoes can be quite annoying to deal with, especially due to their constant buzzing, biting, and the range of diseases they carry. Dengue, malaria, and yellow fever are few of the many illnesses that they are known to spread. Hence, it becomes imperative to keep your house free of these unwelcome guests to safeguard the health of your family.
How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes at Home
There are several options to get rid of mosquitoes at home, naturally. Here are some of them:
1. Garlic
The strong smell of garlic helps keep mosquitoes away. All you need to do is crush some cloves of garlic, boil them in water and spread the smell all over the house. You can fill this solution in a bottle and spray your house with it to keep mosquitoes away.
2. Tulsi
The natural fragrance of Basil or Tulsi acts as a repellent for mosquitoes. Surround your house with Tulsi plants or keep a shrub next to each window. This herb helps keep mosquitoes away and works wonders in treating mosquito bites as well.
3. Cloves and Lemon
This remedy is one of the best ways to keep mosquitoes away; it is quite simple too. Slice a few lemons into halves and stick some cloves into each half. Place these around the house to get rid of mosquitoes.
4. Neem and Lavender oil
Mix some neem and lavender oil in the ratio 1:1 and apply it on your skin. Neem oil can keep mosquitoes away better than commercial coils. It also has antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal properties, which keep your skin safe and protected.
5. Peppermint Essential Oil
Add a few drops of peppermint oil in a cup of water and fill it in a spray can. Spray this solution on your skin. Peppermint oil has chemical compounds that can keep mosquitoes away, leaving you smelling fresh and minty.
6. Camphor Oil
Camphor is the most trust-worthy remedy to get rid of mosquitoes. All you need to do is light camphor in a closed room and leave it for 20 minutes. Not only will you have a long-lasting natural mosquito repellent, but you will be surprised to see dead mosquitoes on the floor.
7. Coffee Grounds
Stagnant water puddles form the ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes. If you have puddles around the house or up on the roof, spread some coffee grounds in it. If those are breeding grounds, the mosquito eggs will automatically float to the surface and once deprived of oxygen, they will not survive - thus, preventing more mosquitoes from taking over your house.
8. Plants that Repel Mosquitoes
Certain plants like Feverfew, Citronella and Catnip are known for repelling mosquitoes. You can plant these in your garden, keep them at your windowsill or doorways to stop mosquitoes from entering the house.
9. Tea Tree oil
Dilute a few drops of tea tree oil in some water and apply it on your skin. This anti-fungal and anti-bacterial oil is not only excellent at repelling mosquitoes, but it can also treat mosquito bites.
10. Rosemary
Rosemary stalks are great at keeping mosquitoes away. Just burn a few stalks inside the house, and you can effectively get rid of mosquitoes from the house.
FAQs
Here is a list of some frequently asked questions and solutions for the same:
1. How to Avoid Mosquito Bites?
Avoid mosquitoes from biting you by installing mosquito screens on your windows and wearing long-sleeved, thick fabric clothes. You can avoid going out in the evenings or at dusks. If you have to go out, use some natural mosquito repellent to stay safe. Mosquitoes are attracted to carbon-dioxide and consuming alcohol causes your body to emit CO2 and increases the bacterial composition of your skin. This, in turn, attracts mosquitoes. So try to limit your alcohol consumption or avoid it altogether. You will also need to clear out any stagnant water around your house and take a shower regularly, especially when you are sweaty.
2. Does Apple Cider Vinegar Kill Mosquitoes?
Apple Cider Vinegar, when sprayed on mosquito larvae can kill them. Although it takes quite some time, it is a natural and safe way to kill new mosquitoes from surrounding your house. You will need to use a good quantity of apple cider vinegar to kill the larvae in the stagnant water. Undiluted apple cider vinegar can also be sprayed on your skin to gain protection from mosquitoes.
3. What to Eat to Repel Mosquitoes?
Garlic and onions emit a compound called allicin through your pores when consumed. This affects your natural scent and keeps mosquitoes away. Mosquitoes do not like the smell of vinegar, so they steer clear if you have consumed a good amount of vinegar. Capsaicin in chilli peppers is an irritant that can keep mosquitoes away. Foods rich in thiamine like lentils, beans, tomatoes, etc., release an odour that repels mosquitoes. Citrus fruits like grapefruit contain a compound called nootkatone which is a component used in pesticides and insecticides.
4. What are Mosquitoes Attracted to?
Lactic acid produced by your body is a major point of attraction for the mosquitoes. Eating salty food increases the amount of lactic acid produced. Acetone, released while breathing and estradiol, a by-product created during the breakdown of estrogen can also attract mosquitoes. They are also attracted to carbon-dioxide produced as a result of metabolism in the body. This is one of the main attractions. Mosquitoes are also attracted to colour – people wearing darker shades like black, red, navy blue, etc., tend to stand out to them.
Mosquitoes can truly be a great inconvenience that needs proper remedial options. The several home remedies for killing mosquitoes mentioned here can be your guide to get to a mosquito-free home.

Happy Pregnancy and Unexpected Delivery
Pregnancy is the best phase of life for any mother. Mine was the twin pregnancy. We were so happy and were leaving pregnancy with utmost care and love. The feeling of giving birth to two children was out of the world. Month by month growth of babies was proper and in the seventh month my baby shower was also done with full-on excitement. All the giveaway gifts were handmade. Things were going nice. Suddenly at the end of the seventh month the water starts coming from one of the baby sac. It had created risk for my both children. Also the medicine which is given for lungs development in babies as a precaution for premature delivery was due next week. So for that we had to wait for at least a day to deliver the babies as the medicine could react and do it's job.
But God had other plans before the day could complete my labour start and it was unbearable. The Doctor had to do my delivery in an emergency and with God's grace and Doctor's effort my babies were delivered safely. They had been kept in neonatal care for about a month. Where all the sonography and blood reports of the children were done. They took care of my babies very nicely. Our daily schedule was to visit the hospital to see our babies and following all the hygiene practices and going back home with heavy heart that children are not with me. And finally after the stress and tension, they are now with us. Loving each and every moment. The shocked face of them, their crying face, the hold of your finger by them. Enjoying motherhood --the best feeling ever. Now they are on the urge of completing three months and their development is perfectly alright.

Spotting and keeping Household Poisons Away from Infants
Many times, infants come in contact with the common chemicals, cleansers and medicines used for various household purposes. Proper poison-proofing of the house is necessary to prevent household poisons from causing harm to your little one.
Babies grow up rapidly and start exploring the things kept in the cupboards and drawers of the house, out of curiosity. If parents conduct a thorough inspection of the house they will realize, that many household items can prove to be hazardous for their child. Therefore, it is important that parents distinguish between what is safe for their child and what is not. Unsafe items must be kept far away from the reach of the child.
Common Household Poisons
The products listed below contain high levels of poison and are dangerous for your baby. It’s important to keep them locked away in closets to prevent your baby from accidentally handling and ingesting them:
Cleansing products for cleaning kitchen utensils, toilet cleansers, fabric bleach, surface disinfectant, Washing detergents etc
Prescription drugs and medicines
Small household plants
Button batteries and coins
Pesticides and insecticides
Kerosene and petrol
Air fresheners
Below is the list of some common products that are not extremely dangerous, but contain some poisonous materials that can cause severe reactions in babies, if ingested:
Cosmetics
Baby care products like soaps, creams, lotions, powders, etc
Glues
Paints
Prevention from Household Poisoning
Accidental ingestion of poison can be quite traumatic for the baby, most of the times, requiring a hospital stay. Hence it is wise to take adequate precautions and prevent them from happening. Follow the steps below :
Even before the baby is born, you can keep away the poisonous chemicals or cleaners at a safe place. You’ll hardly get any time to do this once the baby is home.
Medicines, cleansers, chemicals should be stored in child proof lockers and cupboards, on high shelves
When the products are being used, keep them away from the reach of the infant and store them away in their place as soon as their use is over.
After using the product, close the bottle tightly and replace the product from where it was taken.
Unwanted and expired medicines and drugs should be removed from the house from time to time.
Household poisons for insects, rats and pests and high-potency cleansing chemicals like acids. should not be transferred to any other container used for storing food or water. It should be kept in the same container in which it was bought, to prevent confusion between eatables and the poison.
If the child requires any medicine, the label should be read carefully to know about the dosage and if it is suitable for the child. Always check the expiry date of any products and medicines being used for children.
Batteries and coins should be kept out of reach of the kids. Babies, while playing with the batteries or coins might accidentally swallow them, causing their airways to be blocked.
A medicine should never be referred to as a ‘candy’ or ‘chocolate’. This may result in a situation where your baby may take the medicine by himself, in your absence.
Purses and bags of guests should be stored in a place where the babies cannot reach, to prevent accidents in case your baby decides to explore them and fishes out potentially harmful things like coins, keys, medicines etc. kept in the purse.
Pesticides and rat poisons should be stored separately. These are very hazardous for the kid.
Alcoholic drinks should not be left open. After a party, put away the left-over alcohol immediately.
Keeping these points in mind would make your house a much safer place for the little one to explore and satisfy his curiosity. Read more

5 Great Ways to be an Eco-Friendly Family
There are many ways to make your family eco-friendly and they only require a little effort. Show them how it's done with simple tips. When your family works as a unit to save the planet, big things can happen. Why not start today?
Is your family ready to go green? Don't worry, it isn't as hard as turning vegetarian! All it requires are small changes but the impact, however, is long-lasting. We depend on the earth for all our needs, it's only fitting that we give something back.
How to be Eco-friendly in Today's Times
1. Ditch plastic as much as you can
One of the simplest ways that your family can follow an eco-friendly lifestyle is to say goodbye to plastic. When you get rid of this polluting substance, it reduces your family's exposure to toxins and helps save the environment. Instead, choose glass or stainless steel as substitutes. Eco-friendly containers may cost more, but they last longer and look better in the kitchen. While grocery shopping, carry your own bag instead of taking home plastic bags.
2. Garden together
Wouldn't it be fun to do something together as a family? Well, if you have a yard, ask your little ones to plant some seeds. Give them the responsibility of watering them every day under your supervision. When everyone gets involved, it becomes a fun task. The pleasure of eating your own home-grown fruits and veggies is just a side bonus. This is one of the best eco-friendly activities for the family.
3. Buy eco-friendly school supplies
If your children need school supplies, try to look for recycled notebooks and stationery. You can also find reclaimed wood pencils. If you can't come across them, ask a local store to get them for you. There's always the World Wide Web too to help you find what you need. Plus, you could get a big discount!
4. Paper is the new handy item
Paper can be used for some pretty cool home improvement items. You could always install recycled paper counter tops in the kitchen or the laundry room. They're made by pressing sheets of paper together and binding them with a resin sourced from cashew nutshells. It might sound crazy but it's totally doable and your local furniture store may stock it.
5. Bathroom tips
Having a shower saves more water than a bath in a tub. You could always recycle the water in the bath and use it for flushing the toilet. You can save even more water by skipping a shower and a tub in favour of bathing from a bucket. That way, you know exactly how much water to use. Ask your husband and children to go this route too if you want to be an eco-friendly family.
It pays to go green. The benefits are numerous, not just for the environment but for you too. You save money and benefits that you get as a family is priceless. These eco-friendly living tips may be simple but they'll make a huge difference. They could even inspire your neighbours to follow suit. If you have some awesome tips that can add value to this list, please feel free and share with us. Read more

Q. hi everyone good morning,
sorghum can I give to my 10 month baby is it safe or not please revert I waiting for your reply
Dr Vandan H Kumar
Paediatrician

A. yes
whenever you give any new food to the child you have to take care of two things.
you should give in small quantity. if the child doesn't develop any digestion problem in next 24 hours to 48 hours and the child is able to digest that food then that food can be given again.
but if the child is not able to digestc or there is some problem with vomiting or loose motion or colic pain then kindly avoid that food.
we wait for 2 to 3 days to confirm whether the child is having any problem to that particular food or not
