How to Clean Infant Tongue
Your newborn may not have teeth yet, but that doesn't mean you don't give importance to his dental hygiene. Along with optimal nutrition, it is very important to maintain healthy dental hygiene in newborns. Most new parents ask how they can clean their babies' tongue because it's not an easy task! If you have a baby in your house, he might cry while you clean his tongue, thus making the job harder for you! But it is important that you clean his tongue and keep his mouth healthy and fresh.
Why Do You Need to Clean Your Baby’s Tongue?
One of the simplest, yet most important tasks of our everyday oral hygiene involves cleaning the tongue. But in newborns, this simple task can be quite difficult to perform. Proper cleaning of the tongue regularly helps prevent bad breath and bacterial accumulations and lowers the risk of oral infections and gum diseases.
You should clean and massage your baby's mouth even before the eruption of teeth as cleaning and massaging the baby’s gums in the initial stages can help in the process of teething and ensure proper dental hygiene.
How to Clean an Infant’s Tongue
Whether or not your baby has teeth, you need to clean his mouth and tongue and maintain proper oral hygiene. If you want to know how you can clean your baby's tongue, follow the steps give below.
In order to clean your baby's tongue, the first thing you will need to do is clean your hands. Ensure that your hands are clean before you start the procedure. You can clean your baby's tongue using a gauze or finger cloth wrapped around your fingers. You can even use tongue-cleaners available in the medical stores.
For instance, if you take gauze, moisten the gauze with warm water and wrap it around your finger. Then rest your baby in a comfortable position by cradling him in your one arm and use your other hand to clean the mouth.
Gently open your baby's mouth and put your finger inside to clean the tongue.
Once you put the finger inside, gently scrape the tongue in a circular motion.
After cleaning the tongue finish the procedure by massaging the baby's teeth (if he has teeth) and gums in a gentle manner.
You can also use gum cleaners to remove the build-ups. However, if the cleaners fail to remove the build-ups, then consult the doctor for further advice. Avoid using a fluoride paste or fluoride items as the baby can ingest the fluoride in it.
This cleaning procedure needs to be performed at least once a day preferably after feeding.
Doctors recommend using soft brushes that are specially designed for babies to clean a baby's tongue and cavities. If you want to use one for your baby, it is suggested that you consult a doctor and choose the one suggested by your baby's doctor.
Things to Keep in Mind
In order to ensure proper oral hygiene for your baby, here are certain things that you will need to do.
As soon as your baby's first tooth erupts, you must take him for regular dental visits. Regular dental visits are recommended as soon as the baby's first tooth becomes visible (which generally happens between 3 and 9 months of age).
Get a complete dental examination of your baby and fluoride status review as per doctor’s advice.
If you have any concerns related to your child's dental health, speak to your dentist about it. If you have any concerns related to nursing or bottle-feeding for your baby, discuss with your doctor.
Follow the dentist’s instructions on how to keep the infant’s mouth clean.
Additional Tips to Clean Your Baby's Tongue
You already know how to clean your baby's tongue step-by-step, but we have some more tips that will provide answers to any query you may have concerning oral hygiene for your baby. The tips stated below are more like precautionary measures - so don't skip them!
Using water is the best way to clean the baby’s tongue. Use a piece of soft gauze or cotton cloth to dip into warm water and clean the tongue. However, make sure that the water is not too hot for your baby as it may hurt your baby.
Engage your little one in any interesting activity while cleaning his tongue.
Another alternative is to use glycerine to clean the baby's tongue. The glycerine used here is not the same as the one you use on your body, especially in winters. To clean your baby's tongue, you can buy glycerine from a pharmacy. A small drop of glycerine would be enough to clean the baby's tongue.
If you see white particles glued to the baby’s tongue, then it can be cleaned using a tiny drop of toothpaste but be sure to rinse it off thoroughly or else your baby might swallow the toothpaste.
Clean the gums and the inside of his cheeks thoroughly while cleaning the tongue.
Some babies become cranky and do not allow to clean their mouth. If your little one is irritable while you clean his tongue, wait until he is in a good mood.
Last but not least, take your baby for regular dental visits.
FAQs
1. When Should I Start Brushing My Baby's Teeth?
You can start brushing your baby's teeth as early as his first tooth erupts. You can use a clean, damp cloth, a gauze pad, or a finger brush to clean his first teeth and tongue. Once his teeth start erupting, gently brush his teeth in the morning and before his bedtime.
2. Can I Use Toothpaste to Brush My Baby's Teeth?
You can use a fluoride toothpaste to brush his teeth, however, the amount of toothpaste used should not be more than a smear or the size of a rice grain.
It's never too early to start paying attention to the oral hygiene of your baby. Cleaning your baby’s tongue and teeth will go a long way in ensuring proper oral hygiene - so clean your baby's mouth on a regular basis and keep him happy!

Your 28 Week Old Baby - Development, Milestones & Care
Your baby is now a bundle of energy that is always moving. By this age, your child's brain development has occurred in a significant manner. It will be a great idea to follow up on the developmental milestones that the child is supposed to be passing, but worry not if these have not occurred. Milestones are not rules but simply guidelines to give you a better idea of the baby's progress.
A 28 Week-Old Baby's Development
A 28 week-old baby's weight is much more than what it was when he was born, because of the muscles strengthening greatly in the child. Your child will already have learnt to crawl by now, so make sure to keep any choking hazards away from the floor. Rolling around is also common, and your child might be choosing to roll around everywhere, too.
This chosen method of movement varies greatly in children, so it should not be focused upon too much. Some babies might still be struggling to crawl, but some others might already be starting to pull themselves up to stand. In terms of brain development, the child is also improving well. The brain controls the practising of muscles, and powers towards learning to stand up and walk.
By this time, your child will also be hungrier than ever. Appetite increases are common, as the child need energy more than ever in order to power his rapid movements and brain development. Learning new skills also require a lot of energy at this time, and there will be very less resting periods for the body of the baby. In any way, this period involves rapid development on all fronts.

A Twenty-Eight Week-Old Baby's Milestones
While the child is bound to have passed a few milestones by this time, it is perfectly okay for children to be slow in progress. These milestones are not rules, but rather guidelines which help parents get an idea of how the growth is progressing.
Crawling will be the norm now, with your child moving rapidly to wherever he pleases. If he is already pulling himself up using furniture and other supports, your child is ahead of the curve already.
Cruising is also something that your baby will be doing, and it involves him standing up using supports to strengthen the muscles of his feet and calves to support walking.
It is common for your baby to walk around in this manner a lot, particularly if you have some furniture arranged in a close manner.

Feeding
By this age, you will most likely have introduced solid food to your child apart from breast milk. However, some babies might still not be too inclined towards solid food. It is important to remember that the regular inclusion of solid food in the diet of the child will most likely occur only by the age of one, so you must not force solid food onto the child in any manner. You can encourage her subtly by making solid food available to him by including him during the family dinners, but remember to remove whatever is left with her by the end of the meal. If you try to force him to move onto solid food, this might create negative associations and result in the baby not accepting solid food at all. By twelve months of age, the child will likely have moved onto solid foods which the family consumes. A couple of baby teeth may also have sprouted in his mouth by this time.
A common problem with children at this age is tongue tie. This means that the tongue of the child is unable to move as required, which makes him unable to move the food from the front of the mouth to the middle and back in order to swallow it. Chewing also becomes a problem, with the child being unable to move the food sideways as necessary for the teeth to chew it properly. Some symptoms of this problem occurring include gagging, choking, coughing or vomiting while solid food is given to the child. If you suspect this is the case, it is best to pay a paediatric dentist a visit. He will assess whether the functioning of the tongue and check whether it was an issue back during the breastfeeding days.

Sleeping
For the 28-week old baby, sleep will be disruptive. You will find the child waking up during odd hours of the night, and crying out for your attention. This occurs as a result of muscle practising, which is the phenomenon where the muscles of the child strengthen during the time he sleeps.
Co-sleeping is most preferred by parents at this time so that they can cater to the needs of the child in a better manner. Co-sleeping involves the child sleeping with the parents, in the same bed. You need to ensure that the guidelines for safe bed-sharing with your infant are met so that there is no difficulty for the parents as well as the baby. By this time, your baby will be able to latch and detach by himself during breastfeeding. Therefore, mothers can sleep or take a nap while they breastfeed the child, making sleeping that much easier.

A 28 Week-Old Baby's Care Tips
Teething toys will be comforting to the child, as the eruption of teeth will be occurring in his mouth at this time. You can give your baby cold or chilled items occasionally so that the discomfort of teething is numbed when they bite into the item.
Bed sharing is easier to manage, but ensure that your child gets a safe sleeping space during the night.
If the baby is showing difficulty in consuming even pureed or mashed food items, checking the possibility of tongue tie is necessary.
Do not force solid food unto him, as it can create bad associations in the long run.
Tests and Vaccinations
During the period of four to seven months of age, the child will be given a host of vaccinations. The third shot of a number of vaccines is given at this time, including DTaP, polio vaccine, Hep B, Hib, PCV and rotavirus vaccines. These ensure that the child does not contract diseases like diphtheria, polio, tetanus, hepatitis B, flu and some other ones as well. If the doctor thinks that your child is at risk of being infected by meningitis, meningococcal vaccines will also be prescribed for your child.
Games and Activities
The muscles of the baby’s legs and feet will have strengthened adequately enough to support his weight by now, so you might find your baby jumping around or walking with support at this time. If she is bouncing on your lap, it is fine to support him with your hands under his arms so that his legs develop quicker.
As grabbing and throwing is the norm now, you will best help him develop if you allow him to throw his toys as much as he likes. Also, you should avoid retrieving the thrown toys as much as possible- this means that the child has to move for it himself, thus helping the muscles of his legs get a great workout. Floor play must be given a lot of preference, as it helps the child stand up and walk that much sooner.
Your child will also be a keen listener by this age. He might also start contributing babble to the conversations around him, setting the tone for the second year when most of the speech development takes place. He will most likely have understood the ‘speak and pause’ process of conversation, which means that he will enjoy it a lot when his parents speak to him. In order to stimulate his brain further, you can repeat the sounds he makes back to him and then waiting for him so that he speaks during his turn.

When to Consult a Doctor
After vaccinations, it is common for your child to have fever or rashes at the site of vaccination. However, if these symptoms persist for some time, it is best to give the doctor a visit. If you notice something off with your child with your motherly instincts, it is better to take him to the doctor anyway- better safe than sorry, always.
Seven months might have passed in a jiffy but in terms of development, your baby has gone through a lot. He is already sitting and even standing up, and moving onto solid food. Enjoy this time with your child to the fullest.

Depression in Children
Depression can occur in people of all ages. It is defined as a low mood that is marked with apathy, sadness and an aversion to things that ordinarily bring joy to the affected person. Learning to identify the signs and symptoms of depression is the first step towards seeking a diagnosis and eventually treatment aimed at recovery.
Can Kids Suffer from Depression?
Yes. It is a misconception that children are not prone to depression simply because of their age. In fact, depression among children is more common than you think. It was only after 1980 that depression was included in the list of childhood diseases.
Types of Depression in Kids
Depression can range from moderate to severe and is characterized by certain specific symptoms. If your child has been suffering from five or more of the associated symptoms for at least two weeks, then it is likely to be major or severe depression.
Dysthymia is a category of depression where symptoms are milder, but the condition tends to be chronic and persistent.
Seasonal affective disorder is depression that has to do with exposure to natural light. It surfaces in winters when the hours of daylight are fewer.
Bipolar depression wherein your child is likely to go through an emotional rollercoaster of up and downs is yet another type found in kids though less frequently.
Adjustment disorder is diagnosed when depression occurs after an event that has been upsetting to the child such as the death of a close one.
Causes of Childhood Depression
It is not possible to pinpoint one particular cause of depression in children. A combination of factors such as physical health, family history of depression or mental illness, genetic vulnerabilities, the environment they live in, and biochemical imbalances are usually responsible for depression in children.
Scientists believe that depression is brought on by changes in brain chemistry especially the neurotransmitters that are responsible for sending messages between nerve cells. Traumatic life events such as abuse, being bullied, the death of a parent or divorce can all act as triggers.
Girls are thought to be more vulnerable to childhood depression than boys mainly due to biological differences and their interpretation of events and response to these as opposed to boys. The following are certain psychological factors that might have led to depression:
Low self-esteem
Too much self-criticism
Having a negative body image
Clinical anxiety
Cognitive or learning disabilities
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Trouble with social interaction
Children with little to no physical activity and those who perform poorly at school are also at risk of going into a depression.
Signs & Symptoms of Depression in Children
The symptoms of clinical depression can last for weeks, months, and years if it is left untreated. This can have a bad impact on your child’s daily life including activities at school and even simple activities like getting out of bed after waking each morning. Besides being moody and irritable, if your child shows five or more of the following symptoms, then it is likely that they are depressed and need help:
Being sad and tearful often
Feeling irritated and rebellious
Anger and temper tantrums
Frequent changes in mood
Lack of concentration
Doing badly in school
Feeling guilty
Low self-esteem
Keeps complaining about headaches stomachaches, or other physical discomforts
Overcome by feelings of helplessness and hopelessness
Changes in appetite
Fluctuations in weight
Distances self from social interactions and prefers to be alone
No longer interested in things that were once enjoyable
Problems with sleep
Expressing thoughts about inflicting harm on themselves
Engaging in reckless or harmful behaviour
With children, it can be difficult to identify depression with accuracy and based solely on these symptoms. But if your child has been displaying some of these symptoms for more than a few weeks, then it is best to consult a doctor. Depressed children are also likely to have other difficulties also such as eating disorders, conduct disorders, or problems with substance abuse.
How is Depression Diagnosed in Kids
If your child has been showing some of the symptoms associated with depression for more than a couple of weeks, you should take him or her to a doctor for consultation. You may be referred to a mental health professional who can accurately diagnose your child’s depression through a series of evaluations.
As part of the evaluation, the physician might want to speak with you as well as your child and any other caregivers including your partner. Information might be sought from teachers, classmates, and friends to pinpoint a pattern of behaviour. Questionnaires may be given to you and your child and the physician will have to rely on this type of analysis as there is no specific child depression test as such that can provide a definitive diagnosis.
Since depression is associated with quite a few other disorders such as autism-spectrum issues, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anxiety disorders, the evaluations will also screen for these. Your child’s medical history will also be analyzed as childhood depression can be the side-effect of some types of medications.
What are the Complications?
If your child has depression, it can put them at a risk for many mental health issues in the long run. Childhood depression can result in poor academic performance as well as problems with alcohol or drug abuse. As adults, such children might be unable to hold a job for long and face difficulties in adjusting to life as part of a family. '
It is also possible that some depressed children might harbour suicidal thoughts and as a parent, it is important for you to be aware of warning signs of this. Flags for suicidal behaviour include talk of suicide or death and dying, focusing on the morbid, giving away of their possessions, and increase in risk-taking.
Treatment for Childhood Depression
The treatment for childhood depression is similar to that followed for adults suffering from depression. Psychotherapy and medication are used individually or in combination as part of the treatment process depending on the severity of the condition. Mild to moderate childhood depression is often treatable with psychotherapy alone.
If that does not suffice, then anti-depressants may be prescribed in addition to the therapy. This is usually required in severe cases of depression. Anti-depressants are useful in rectifying the chemical imbalance and can take up to a few months to prove effective. Pinpointing the right medication and the dose can also take time. Also, medication alone will not cure the problem and has to be accompanied by therapy.
You are also likely to come across plenty of alternative treatments such as herbal remedies and supplements that are easily available. However, the veracity of these has not been proven and some might even be detrimental to your child’s overall well-being.
Can Depression in Kids Be Prevented?
Yes, to a certain extent childhood depression can be prevented. For this, it is important that children are brought up in a nurturing environment which fosters a healthy attachment between the child and parents. Being attentive about your child’s needs, providing them love and care, and encouraging gradual independence can all make a difference. When your child is surrounded by supportive adults, has a strong family, maintains a healthy relationship with peers, develops good coping skills, and is emotionally regulated, there is no place for depression.
How to Find a Good Therapist
Your child’s doctor will be able to provide you with some references when seeking a therapist. Besides this, you can ask friends and family or other health providers. Checking their affiliations and researching about the reputation of the therapists on your list can prove helpful in narrowing down your choices. If your insurance provides coverage for the treatment, then you might have to factor in that as well and look for an approved therapist. If your child has been diagnosed with another mental health problem associated with the depression such as an eating disorder, you will need to look for a professional who specializes in that also. It is also important for your child to build a rapport with the therapist. So, the best thing is to opt for a trial session with a couple of the shortlisted professionals and see which one your child feels most comfortable with. Here are some points to tick off your list at the initial meeting with the therapist:
Professional qualifications, certifications, and experience in the field
Types of treatment likely to be suggested
How long the treatment might take
Cost involved and mode of payment
The recommended involvement of parents in the therapy
Expertise in dealing with any associated mental health problems your child may have been diagnosed with
What the usual outcome is likely to be
Helping Your Depressed Child
Dealing with depressed children can be stressful and requires a great deal of time and effort. The first step is to speak to your child about their feelings and moods while conveying to them that you are on hand whenever your child wants to talk. Lend an ear, be supportive, and demonstrate your love as much as possible without going overboard.
Here are some other things you can do to help your child through this difficult time:
Ensure your child has a nutritious diet and gets adequate sleep and rest each day along with a moderate amount of physical activity.
Be patient and kind even when your child throws a temper tantrum, acts grumpy or pushes you away. Mind your words and circumvent arguments whenever possible.
Eliminate events and situations that stress out your child as much as possible.
Encourage your child to take up interest or hobby and be diligent about pursuing it.
Make sure that your child takes any prescribed medication on time and arm yourself with knowledge about possible side-effects and ways of handling them.
Follow the suggestions and advice offered by your child’s therapist as this can help speed up the recovery process.
Depression can have a profound impact on all spheres of your child’s life and prevent them from making the most of available opportunities. Offering your support and taking time out to be with your child is integral to the recovery process.
This information is just a guide and not a substitute for medical advice from a qualified professional.

How Reading Develops in your Preschooler
Just like physical development, cognitive development also plays a key role in your child’s life. One of the biggest indicators of this is the love for reading. This is in turn tied to their understanding of letters, sounds, pictures, stories, colours, etc. and putting them all together to form a sensible mental picture. So, is your child developing normally when it comes to his reading skills?
For 3-4 year old pre-schoolers, this checklist will tell you if your child is developing reading skills appropriately for his age.
At This Age, Your Child Should be Able to
Predict simple plot points in a story when you are reading to him
Turn pages in a book while holding it
Name some of the letters, especially those in his name
Match the letter sounds to the letter – e.g. monkey to the “m” sound
Display interest toward trying to read on his own and asking you to read out to him as well
This is What You Should Do to Encourage Reading
1. Reinforce his Letter and Letter Sounds Training
Starting with his name and then moving on to the rest of the alphabet is a good plan. This needs to be done every day.
2. Match Household Objects to Letter Sounds
There’s so much at home that allows this. Your keys have the “k” sound while his teddy bear starts with the “t” sound.
3. Have a Reading Session Daily
This involves both of you reading out to each other. It is okay to make errors. What is important is learning from them.
4. Expose Your Child to the Huge World of Books
Show your child that the world of books is vast, like in a library or bookstore. Point out different types of books to him and tell him about the stories there are in them.
5. Keep the Letters Practice on Even Outdoors
Signboards of shops, ice-cream flavours and names of animals– letters can be such fun things! Point these out to your child so he knows he is surrounded by letters and wants to unravel them himself.
When to Seek Expert Help
It is possible that your pre-schooler is facing reading challenges due to a deeper problem such as defective vision, a speech delay, etc. If your child keeps confusing letters and numbers and is unable to match them to sounds, even after repeated practise, you should seek expert help. The doctor will be able to suggest the right therapy and exercises to fix this. Rest assured, this is a very common and easily rectified problem.
Very soon, you will have a little reader at home who will books of his own and repeat facts and stories to you with unparalleled enthusiasm. Enjoy this time and keep encouraging the habit. Reading is a glorious habit which will serve your kids tbroughout their life! Read more

A. Typically, your bump becomes noticeable during your second trimester. Between 16-20 weeks, your body will start showing your baby's growth. For some women, their bump may not be noticeable until the end of the second trimester and even into the third trimester. The second trimester starts in the fourth month.

A. Start having chilled milk directly from the refrigerator that usually helps a lot in reducing down acidity and anyways when you take so much of medicine in the body gets addicted to it to check with your doctor if you need to do anything or any other medication would be friendly in cases of emergency
