Preschooler Month 43-48 — Growth and Development
It has been over 43 months since you first held your little baby. By now you are an indispensable part of each other’s lives. There's so much you have learnt from your baby and so much she has learnt from you. In fact, this learning never stops. Let's have a look at the next few months with your preschooler and what you can expect her to learn shortly.
Between months 43 and 48, you will notice a lot of “growing up” - suddenly. Every child develops at their own pace so it is impossible to figure out exactly when yours will learn a particular skill. The following milestones will give you an idea of what you can expect in these months. However, do not get worried if your child has different interests or a slower pace at developing. The rate of development varies across children. However, if something worries you too much, consult the pediatrician for advice.
Physical Development
Your child's jaw and facial bones have been growing to create some space for teeth. This sort of changes the size and appearance of the face.
Now, your child can walk up and down stairs without stumbling or using any support now.
Riding a tricycle is child's play for your little one as her body fine tunes its motor skills even further.
Socio-emotional Development
Your little girl most likely has some best friends in her life whom she is really attached to. If she hasn't been exposed to many kids her age, her family will be of utmost importance to her.
She will learn to share toys around this time and will learn that it is a social norm to share. Teaching your child to share should be easy but if you aren't too sure you can find some great ways here.
As for potty training, you might not need to worry any longer and these months are usually when children are quite capable of doing the job on their own.
Previously you may have noticed emotional outbursts that are common in toddlers who cannot contain their feelings. These will decline as your child gets older and finds ways of coping. There will be a definite improvement in emotional self-regulation.
You will also notice your child considering someone else's feelings, especially if they are directly related to her own actions.
Cognitive Development
Thinking and cognitive development is also major at this stage. For instance, your little one can easily feed herself with a spoon or fork now.
She can also undo and put on bigger buttons on a dress. Frees up quite a bit of your time, we assure you!
Her attention span increases as well as she can focus for longer periods without interruptions.
You will find that random scribbles now transform into more meaningful pictures, perhaps a family picture.
Linguistic Development
Your little talker can now ask grammatically correct questions and not just baby-talk words.
She can also speak out about 10 letters of the alphabet in the correct order. If she is being taught phonetics then she may also be able to match some letters with their correct sounds.
As for writing skills, she should be able to trace certain letters down. This will only get better with practice and increasing confidence.
Contact Your Pediatrician If You Notice
By now, your child should be able to throw a ball overhand and jump in one place. Most kids this age are also able to ride a tricycle easily. If your child is still struggling with these milestones, it could indicate a physical development lag. You should discuss this with pediatrician to rule out problems with muscle tone or gross motor skills.
Can your child not use simple sentences yet? Does he still confuse “me” and “you”? It is possible that he could be going through a language or speech problem. You should get this analyse by the doctor who will suggest therapy or activities to help your little one.

School Memories That Tickle Us (and Make Us Go Aww!)
Do you often miss your school days and want them to come back? As moms to school-going children, you probably miss those golden days all the more! Why not relive school life memories by reminiscing about these common things you did in your school years?
Nothing can beat the fun we had during our school days. When we were in school, we couldn’t wait to grow up, be independent, and free of the rules and regulations set by school authorities. But now, every time we reminisce about our school days, we can’t help but wish we could return to those times!
Common Funny Things We All Did in School
1. What’s She Got in Her Tiffin Today?
More than our own lunch boxes, we would be really interested in our friend’s tiffin! Some of us would even wipe out the snacks sent by our friends’ moms much before the lunch break. Now, when you look back fondly, you wish that you could have those little sandwiches and rolls with your friends once again.
2. Let's Play Pen Wars and Book Cricket!
These are the legendary classroom games that almost everyone has played during their school times. Even with the teacher explaining geometry on the blackboard, backbenchers would be engrossed in their games. Turn the page and the last even digit of the page number becomes your score. Oh, the good old memories about school life! Also, how can we forget those pen wars with our bench mates?
3. We Have a Free Period
The happiest moment during school days was when a teacher was absent. It meant that a free period was in store. Yippee! You would look forward to having your favourite “ma'am” as the substitute teacher. She would probably take you to the field to play, allow library time, or organise exciting indoor games. Oh yes, free periods formed the most valued school life memories!
4. Interschool Fests– Excitement Unlimited!
Interschool functions were special occasions and you would rehearse dances or plays, or whichever event you participated in to give your best performance. You wouldn’t leave any stone unturned in helping your school win the trophy. Also, a big reason these functions triggered excitement was because you got to meet new faces and friends (especially boys!).
5. Fill My Slambook, Please?
Accept it, most of us had more than one slam book. You would give these to not only your closest friends but also those with whom you rarely spoke (but were secretly fond of). The best parts were linked to writing funny anecdotes and making silly emoticons! And oh, your most embarrassing moment and latest crush!
School day nostalgia stays with us, no matter how old we become. So, take out time, get together with your school day partners-in-crime, and relive many such moments. You'll feel instantly fresher! Read more

How Play Is Related to Mental Health - a Basic Guide for Parents
Playing is an amazing process to stimulate and help with brain development. The Indian parenting style concentrates primarily on physical growth only. We never care for mental health development. Mental health is much more important than physical health. A baby has a trillion nerve cells at the time of birth but unfortunately, if they're not taken care of, the number of nerve cells decreases according to the growth of the child. The restoration process will never completely be fulfilled by physical care measures like nutrition and vaccination. But when a child is getting enough amount of play and physical activities, the neurons are restored.
Most importantly, play helps to develop:
Cognitive skill
Motor skills
Gross motor skills
Understanding of the world
Speaking skill or language development
Social skills
Sensorial development
All of the above skills are needed to help with the improvement of intelligence or mental health. It can be done through play; but not the kind that happens only within four walls, not the kind which calls for loads of expensive toys in a baby's room, and definitely not the kind that requires handing the child over to the babysitter to play with. The development of some skills take place while playing indoor games; some require nature and sunlight; some need a peer group; and some need just regular playtime at the kitchen table with mommy. It's important to understand the emotional as well the psychological needs of a child.
Physical health is something that's always seen, but remember, it's the unseen mental development that helps create your child's personality in the future. We give loads of importance to nutrition, diet plans, record our child's height and weight regularly, but show less concern about skill development. We choose expensive toys, which are worthless, but are not concerned about how even simple games like hide-and-seek, playing ball, pouring water into a drinking glass and so on can help to develop motor skill as well cognitive skills.

The (Not So) Funny Effects of Being a Nice Woman
Sometimes, being nice could land you in a spot. The hardest part about being an overly nice woman is never saying ‘no’ to someone. This could land you in a few sticky and uncomfortable situations. Most of you ladies may want to change that perception.
Are you tired of people taking advantage of your kindness? Women who are genuinely nice often face the brunt of it. While some consider the niceness as ‘being fake’, others feel they can manipulate you. Here are some of the problems faced by nice women today. Can you relate?
The Downside of Being a Nice Woman
1. Friendship Trouble
Friendships can sometimes go bad- or horrendously bad. If you are the kind of person who couldn’t even hurt a fly, chances are you wouldn’t want to hurt your friend's feelings too. When all you want to do is run to the exit, you are afraid you'll hurt their sentiments. Yes, being a nice woman can put you in a tight spot. Just remember- a relationship that stresses you more than it makes you happy may not be worth it.
2. Work Dilemma
Being nice and leading a team of colleagues is a bad match. Thinking about the welfare of your team is noble. However, it could get you into a few predicaments. You might want to please everyone, but the fact is, you can’t. In fact, being nice could be your downfall. Your team members may deliver work late and expect a free pass. They could continue to take leaves – sometimes, even without informing you. It's always good to lay down the law once in a while. This is among the worst side effects of being a nice woman.
3. Shoulder to Lean On
You might be the kind of woman who'll drop everything to be there for a friend. All your girlfriends consider you the shoulder they can lean on. While this is great, it can soon become a tad bit annoying. Since you have the habit of pleasing everyone, you might get stuck with their problems. Some of your friends might even want to spend the entire day ranting about how life is being unfair to them. All you choose to do is lend a sympathetic ear. There goes another day playing the superhero!
4. Too Nice
If you always have a kind word to say or you believe in helping people on a daily basis, others may think you’re being fake. They might even think the smile you flash them in the morning is pre-meditated. There’s no winning here! Why? Because most people will find it odd that you are always in such a positive mood. Talk about pessimism.
Do you relate to most of the point highlighted in the article? If you do, it's time you tweak your personality a bit. Sometimes, being too nice can be misconstrued as being a pushover. You wouldn’t want people to call you that, right? However, this doesn’t mean that you become harsh. It only means that you repay kindness where kindness is due. Simple. Read more

New Mothers Who Are Exhausted, Know That You Are Doing Great!
Hello to the mommy who was very excited before the baby's arrival, but now finds it's exhausting and sometimes doesn't know what to do. I want to say hello to the mommy who has no time to have a peaceful meal and is sleep-deprived. I also want to say hello to the mother who gets random comments on how to raise kids and what to do and what not to do, and feels depressed at times.
Even I am going through the same phase but one thing that keeps me going forward and motivated is knowing that there will be no better mom than me for my baby. I am messy, I am exhausted, and I need a break at times. Sometimes, I feel like I can't do it all alone but I am very fortunate to have a supportive husband who does help in looking after the baby, but I also feel that is how it should be. Parenting is a two-way concept. This also helps in building a bond between your husband and the baby. As a mom of a 5-month-old baby boy, the thing that has personally helped me have a stress-free life is spending at least half an hour to one hour just for myself. Me time definitely helps you can do what you love.
Sometimes days go as per your plan but on other days everything goes haywire. I was struggling during the initial months since I am a new mommy and didn't know what was to be done. My baby was cluster feeding and I had to sit all day feeding him which was definitely overwhelming, but I always reminded myself that I can do this and this too shall pass. I know all mommies out there face different challenges, but I don't want you all to give up. There can be no better mom for your little one than you. Consistency is the key and knows the fact that your kids are not going to stay the same but they will grow up very fast, so always live in the moment and cherish your kids!
Take care and be safe!
