Giving Cow’s Milk to Babies
Many of us have fond memories of being fed cow’s milk by our mothers when we were young. This delicious and nutritious drink is often offered by itself, with cornflakes and oats, or in milkshakes, etc. to kids. However, since a baby’s digestive system isn’t as developed as a ten-year old’s, one wonders if it is the ideal drink for an infant. Here, we discuss if cow’s milk is suitable for babies, and if not, when it can be introduced to them.
Can We Give Cow's Milk to a Newborn Baby?
Cow’s milk isn’t recommended to newborn babies for a variety of reasons.
Firstly, a baby’s digestive system isn’t developed enough to handle the large quantity of proteins (such as casein and whey) in cow’s milk.
Secondly, the early introduction of cow’s milk to your infant can make his system intolerant to it.
Lastly, cow’s milk can make your newborn iron deficient, as it interferes with iron absorption in the body.
While feeding milk is not advised, milk-based products such as yoghurt and cheese are still considered acceptable for babies below one year of age. However, we should refrain from offering them cow’s milk independently. This is because the amount of sodium in cow’s milk is much higher than what a baby’s kidneys can handle.
When to Introduce Cow's Milk to Kids
Most parents who feed formula milk to their babies are keen to transition to cow’s milk. This is mainly because formula milk is expensive and exclusively for the baby’s consumption. Cow’s milk, on the other hand, is purchased for the whole family anyway, making it a cheap alternative. If the baby doesn’t have a family history of lactose intolerance or dairy allergy, he can be introduced to cow’s milk after 1 year of age.
Remember that if your baby is breastfed until the first birthday, they are getting the best nutrition milk can offer! Not only is breast milk ideal for human babies, but it also has the right mix of nutrients that your child needs for growth and development. Breast milk also has a higher fat content, which is vital for the growth of your baby (Yes! Higher than cow’s milk too). Cow’s milk (which is also species-specific composition) just happens to be the most convenient source of calcium, protein, fats and Vitamin D. While it provides no competition to breast milk, it does offer a viable alternative to mothers who plan to wean their child from breastfeeding, when he turns one year old.
How to Introduce Cow's Milk to a Baby
Cow’s milk can be introduced to babies after their first birthday, but in small quantities. To start off, it can be mixed with breast milk, formula milk, or boiled and cooled water to allow the baby to have a smooth transition. You can consider sneaking it in other foods of your baby's choice, initially, to check if he is able to digest it without any issues.
You can mix cow’s milk with breast milk in the ratio of 1:3. This means that the mixed milk will be one-part cow’s milk and three parts breast milk. You can gradually start increasing the ratio of cow’s milk, while simultaneously reducing the ratio of breast milk. Eventually, the toddler can be offered cow’s milk alone. Ideally, it should be offered at least an hour before feeding time. This helps kids get the right nutrition from milk without compromising their appetite for other foods.
Health Benefits of Cow's Milk
Cow milk is good for babies as it has a good amount of calcium, which is vital for developing strong bones, teeth and muscle growth. It contains Vitamin D which helps in the absorption of calcium in the body.
Milk also carries a high amount of protein, which helps your baby grow. It also contains carbohydrates, which give your child the energy required throughout the day. A child with abundant levels of calcium will have stronger bones, healthy blood pressure, and a healthy heart.
How Much Milk Does Your Toddler Need?
A one-year-old can be offered about 8 to 12 ounces of milk, daily, after a gradual introduction. You may also offer a dairy equivalent of this in the form of yoghurt or cheese. Some children may take a liking to this taste and prefer this over regular meals as well. However, you should restrict the intake, as it might limit their appetite for other solids. This could be counterproductive, as your child will not have a balanced diet.
You may also consider offering milk as a beverage in between meals and not as a substitute for the meal itself. It is important to remember that your toddler may not chug down the glass of milk as he did during bottle feeds. This is perfectly fine. Intake of cow’s milk is a nutritional supplement and an optional beverage. The same nutrients can also be received from a variety of other foods.
Side Effects of Cow's Milk
As always, the introduction of any food to your baby must follow the three-day rule. Monitor your child closely after you start them off on any new food. The same applies to cow’s milk as well.
Some babies may be sensitive to the dairy intake of their mother as well. Close monitoring of symptoms such as overall restless behaviour, diarrhoea, vomiting, relentless crying, flatulence or noisy bowels could indicate this.
You might wonder, ‘Why is cow milk bad for babies?’ Cow’s milk has a higher concentration of proteins, sodium, calcium, and Vitamin D, and sometimes strains the digestive systems of babies. You must watch out for the following symptoms to ensure your baby is able to digest cow’s milk well.
1. Allergies
Rashes, breathing issues and wheezing can all be a result of cow’s milk allergy in babies. Symptoms can be more extreme, such as constipation, hives or a stuffy/ itchy nose as well.
2. Lactose Intolerance
Lactose intolerance can show up as vomiting, gastrointestinal, stomach upset, and even diarrhoea in babies on the introduction of cow’s milk.
In case your baby does seem to have an allergy to cow’s milk, you should consult your doctor for alternatives to cow’s milk, such as soy milk.
What to Do if Your Baby Refuses to Drink Cow Milk
There are a few tips that may help your child accept cow’s milk more willingly.
1. Try to warm the milk before offering it. Most of the time, toddlers refuse the milk, as cold milk is unusual for them. A slight temperature variation can do the trick.
2. If the child doesn’t seem to like the taste, you can consider giving it as a milkshake or mixed with other food such as cereal, porridge etc. It also helps make the milk look interesting by adding natural colours to it.
3. Make milk-drinking fun for your child! Create positive associations with verbal or other rewards for drinking milk each day.
4. Offer it in a colourful sippy cup or with a straw. You can even consider buying a new cup just for this purpose and declare it to be a special cup so that the child looks forward to drinking anything out of it.
5. As a last resort, you can sweeten the milk. It is best to stay away from this practice as it gets the child habituated to the taste. You can try natural sweetening by adding fruits or dry fruits to the milk.
Which Type of Cow's Milk to Choose for Babies: Whole Milk vs. Low Fat Milk
Until two years of age, children need to receive whole milk. This is because the fat in it is essential for their growth. After that, the transition to low-fat or regular milk can be made. Depending on the weight range of the child, a smart choice can be made. Babies who are overweight or on the heavier side can be given low-fat milk from the start.
Though milk is a popular drink around the world, it may seem surprising that it isn’t recommended for infants from the go. However, once the one-year age barrier is crossed, one can transition towards milk and milk-based products.
Alternatives to Cow’s Milk
If your child is allergic to cow’s milk or lactose intolerant, here are some alternatives that you could try giving him instead.
1. Soy Milk
A popular alternative to cow’s milk, soy milk is widely available and affordable throughout the country. This also has a similar nutritional value as that of cow’s milk. However, soy milk is an acquired taste that your child must get used to.
2. Coconut Milk
Rich in Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D, coconut milk is healthy and readily available as well. It is also creamy and tastes great. One con to this alternative is that coconut milk has a lower proportion of proteins and calcium to cow’s milk, so you may need to make up for the deficiency with other foods
3. Almond Milk
Almond milk has a neutral taste and creamy texture and is available in different flavours. This is also highly nutritional and low in calories. However, the price of this alternative is much higher.
Cow's milk can provide a baby with essential nutrients, once he turns one-year-old. It is neutral tasting and can be easily flavoured. However, make sure to follow precautions when introducing cow's milk to your baby's diet to ensure he is not allergic to it.

What Should You Wear for Labour and Delivery?
We all love to get all decked up and dressy for special occasions. Well, your baby’s birth is one of the most important occasions in your life. However, you are not expected to dress up in any of your fineries for that, but you may wonder what you should wear for labour and delivery? In reality, no one pays heed to what you should be wearing for the birthing process, but it surely is important to you. What all criteria you may need to consider for picking up labour and delivery clothes and more are discussed in this article.
What to Wear while in Labour?
As you approach labour, all you may be thinking about is delivering a healthy baby. But a thought may definitely strike in your mind that what to wear to the hospital for labour or what to wear during labour and delivery.
Here we have a few choices for you that you may consider:
1. You May Wear A Gown
A thought of wearing a gown may take back to your prom or first date memories but how about making some beautiful memories with your baby too. Here we are not taking about LBD or little black dress, but we are talking about a comfortable and flowy labour gown that may help in making you feel extremely easy and comfortable. There are many renowned brands that have many options in such gowns that you can choose from. We suggest a cotton knee-length gown which may have a front opening as it may assist your midwife in checking the progress of your labour.
2. You May Wear A Loose-Fitted Dress
A comfy yet pretty dress is also something that you consider for your labour. Many maternity stores have beautiful options available. You may opt for a dress that has a buttoned-down closure in the front, which may not only help you have skin-to-skin contact with your little bunny, but it may also assist you in hassle-free breastfeeding.
3. You May Wear Your Most-Comfy T-Shirt
Many of us have a favourite piece of clothing that we wear most of the time at home because we feel most comfortable with it. If you have something like this, then it may be a good idea to wear that during your difficult time too, which is labour that we are talking about here.
4. You May Wear A Bikini
If you are not afraid of your pregnancy weight or you are not conscious to bare some skin, then you may consider wearing a bikini. Also, bikini may be an ideal option for women who may be planning on having a water birth at home, as it is easy to slip it off.
5. You May Go Bare
If you can dare, you may go bare! Yes, you can be absolutely naked during your labour. Giving birth to a baby is the most beautiful experiences, and no one cares whether you are wearing something or not, because everyone must be concentrating on the birthing process. Also, if you are planning on delivering in the tub or shower, going naked may be a good option to consider.
Important Points to Consider while Dressing for Labour
Even if you are amongst those women, who are considered a fashion icon or who are always in style, being fashionable may be the last thing on your mind when you may be going into labour. So, what is that you need to pay heed to while dressing for labour? Here’s what you may like to keep in mind before rushing to the hospital:
1. Get Rid of The Blingy Things
If you are adorning any earrings, nose rings, fingerings are any such jewellery items, it will be a good idea to remove all of it before heading to the hospital. This is because you may be required to remove all of your jewellery in case you may have to go in for c-section. During such situations, it becomes difficult to take care of valuable belongings, and there is also the risk of misplacing them.
2. Wear Comfortable Clothes
As discussed in the above section, you should try and dress in up comfortable clothes for the hospital, which can be easily changed or removed. Try and wear comfortable footwear too, preferably slip-on shoes so that there is no hassle of tying up the laces or buckling up.
3. Stay Away from Painting Your Nails
Well-manicured hands surely look beautiful, but you may like to skip painting your nails. This is because your nails show a great deal about your health. In case, your oxygen levels start going down your nails will start turning blue and this may be a sign for your doctor to be alert.
4. Skip the Make-Up
If you one of those ladies who likes to stay prim and proper and love to wear makeup on a daily basis, we recommend that you should give it a skip if you are going to the hospital. This is because makeup such as foundation, compact, blusher etc. may make it difficult for your doctor to observe the oxygen level by looking at your skin. Also, you may like to stay away from moisturising your skin too, because if any surgical tape needs to be placed, it may not stick properly.
5. You May Skip Your Underpants
It may sound a bit weird, but you are going to go into labour soon and thus may be required to let go of your undergarments. So, you may remove your underpants at home only and go-commando to the hospital.
We hope that these tips may be useful in bringing a beautiful culmination to your nine months of pregnancy journey. All the best!

10 Tips for Traveling With an Infant - My First Solo Experience
Recently I travelled to India with my baby for the first time after his delivery, let me tell you, it's not a piece of cake. And the cherry on the top, I made the trip without my spouse. While most of the mom's would directly relate to my experience but for the one's that haven't tried it yet, this is me sharing my experience with you all.Cross your fingers ladies, as I hope my experience would help you plan for your trips better.
Disclaimer: My flight was for 3 hrs so my experience is based accordingly.
Tip 1: Day-Time Ticket
We know how important our sleep is to us. We also know that at least once your baby is gonna cry so why disturb other people's sleep. Its better to book a flight during day time.
Tip 2: Packs Your Suitcase in Advance Including Diaper Bag
If Motherhood have taught us something, it's to be well prepared in advance. I made the mistake of leaving my baby's bag for the last minute. I had planned to carry all my babies cloths so that once he outgrow them I can give them for charity. Hence, I did not pack his bag while I did my packing. Big mistake. As we have to weight our bags and all. It became very hectic.
Tip 3: Wear Cloths That are Easy to Feed and Shoes That are Easy to Walk
No matter how much you feed solid food to your baby, at one point your baby is gonna need breastfeed. So better wear something that's easy for feeding rather than a hassle.
No shiny, strappy, complicated shoes for me. No no no. Anything that requires both hands to wear is a total no go. You will be carrying your baby in your hands and shoes/sandles that might need adjusting is not sensible.
Tip 4: No Sleep for the Baby Till Its Boarding Time
This one is my favourite. Do try this ladies. So what I did was kept my baby awake from 10 am to 4 pm as my flight was at 4 pm. With constant food and games and what not. But I did it. And it was a game changer. Because as soon as I boarded my flight, my baby was asleep with little breast feeding and he slept for half the flight. Yes, in the end he started becoming cranky but the end result was good.
Tip 5: Using Washroom Before You Board
Now I know it might be a little childish but hear me out. At the airport, if you are carrying a stroller, you could easily take your baby in the washroom. Even if you don't have a stroller, still washrooms have ample space. But you can't leave your sleeping baby, or awake for that matter, in the plane to visit the washroom. Already the washrooms are too small to carry your baby in. And why bother other passenger to take care of him. Limiting liquid intake can do wonders.
Tip 6: Dry Snacks Should Be Placed Strategically
You or your baby is gonna need snacks at some point so stock some dry snacks in the space in front of your seat. So when you feel hungry you don't have to take your bag out from the over-head bins.
Tip 7: Toys are a Life Saver
No matter whats the age. Toys will keep them busy. Carry at least 2 small toys to keep them occupied.
Tip 8: Eat Your Food First So That Its Easy to Handle Cranky Baby
You can't think on empty stomach. It's better to eat something rather than skip meal to take care of the baby.
Tip 9: Sleep As Soon As Your Baby is Asleep Because Once He is Awake, Your Won't Get Any
Its the best time utilise. Once your baby is awake there is no way you would get some shut eye. Better make use of the opportunity and get some nap along with your baby.
Tip 10: No Matter How Dreaded Your Flight Is, Your Finally Going Home (wohooooo)
Now that's the feeling that doesn't need explanation. No matter how many times you have traveled to your parents house, each trip will still give you the same butterfly feeling. Just keep thinking of meeting your loved ones.
This was my experience. I hope it would benefit some of you guys.

8 Things Moms do Every Day that they Really Wish You'd Notice
For all that mothers do to keep the family running like a well-oiled machine, it's rare that you get any help or even appreciation. Aside from caring for the kids, there are numerous chores around the house that always fall on you to complete. For an Indian mom, irrespective of whether she's a stay-at-home-mom or a working mother, every day is a series of seemingly unending tasks. These are things that are of importance to the whole family. But even then, they often go unnoticed...
Moms really are the backbone of every family. In between taking care of the kids, they shoulder the housework, manage expenses, and address everyone's problems. What’s more, you don’t hear them complain often. But just because they don't harp on about it doesn't mean they don't welcome appreciation from time to time. Research also agrees: it has been proven that moms have it far more stressful than dads while raising kids. While dads get to enjoy the fun side of parenting, moms have to take on the stressful side and sacrifice on the leisure and togetherness. Not just as parents, but also as wives and daughters-in-law, Indian women continue to have a hard time.
"Unprepared and with very little support system we raise our kids. That’s another reason why Indian moms are always stressed. The amount of unsolicited advice they get from relatives, family and friends- on how to feed the baby, should they be breastfed or formula fed, etc. Besides, Indian women are also always under the pressure of being judged for their actions. For instance - the kid is wearing mismatched clothes, and being packed to school with the horrible lunch crammed in an equally horrible looking box. Oh, why?"
Don't let it come to this, moms. Re-evaluate these things that you do every day but that usually go unnoticed. It is time to start looking after yourself a bit more by getting help with all these tasks. That you stay in good health and stress-free is important for the whole family and getting them to help you is the only way to get this done!
1. You're The One Picking Up After The Kids
It could be folding the kids' clothes or collecting dirty cups and bowls for washing. But, picking up after the children and even after the hubby is something that every mom does. As often as you do it, it's only rarely that you get a 'thank you' from the family, let alone some help. Wouldn't it be great if everyone chipped in? If only!
2. You're The One Washing The Dishes after and In-Between Meals
A big time-consumer especially if you have several children, this has to be one of the worst - it's endless! And no, it's not only washing the dishes after meals but every other hour. A glass here, a plate there - you never knew you had so many utensils in the house! Maybe it's time to set a rule. Strictly no eating in between meals!
3. You're The One Making The Beds for The Entire Household
Easy to do, but why is it that you end up with bed-making duty every day? You don't mind doing it for the little ones, but it's about time that hubby and the older children pull their weight. This could be rule number two!
4. You End Up Feeding Everyone But Skip Meals Yourself
After getting the entire family warm, delicious meals, you are often left too tired to arrange a proper one for yourself. You either eat in a rush, wolfing down your food hurriedly, or just skip your meals altogether. All because you don't have help with the cooking and cutting - something that your husband and even the kids can surely help you with.
5. You're The One Balancing Unrealistic Expectations from The In-Laws
You shouldn't take up a job if you want to. You should be an excellent cook. You should be ready to entertain last-minute guests all the time. And after doing all this, there is not the slightest chance of appreciation because this is "your duty" as an Indian wife and mom. Ladies, if your in-laws put you through such unrealistic expectations, it is not your duty to balance them all. Doing so will only drain you out. Instead, talk to them honestly about these things and arrive at an arrangement that suits everyone.
6. You're The One Responsible for Stressful Parenting Tasks
Potty training, waking up at night to calm or feed your baby, introducing him to solid foods, changing diapers - these aren't tasks that you have sole responsibility for. Parenting is a team effort. Your husband should help you deal with these tasks and cut down your stress. Not only will this be beneficial for you, but it will also help build a stronger bond between daddy and baby!
7. You're The One Chasing The Dust Bunnies Away
Dust is quick to collect but annoying to clean. And, it takes up so much time especially if you have many things in the house. Kiddie playthings, bookshelves, tabletops; it's always your job to clean! Wouldn't it be great to hear someone say "Thank you so much for keeping my room clean!" every once in a while?
8. You're The One Doing The Grocery Shopping Even after a Long Day
You're not the only one who eats, so why is it that you somehow always end up with grocery shopping duty? You make up the shopping list too, which isn't all that easy considering everyone wants to have different things. What you wouldn't give to dump it all on someone else!
Moms seem to be the best jugglers. Many don't complain about all the things they have to do. But getting even a little appreciation goes a long way in making you feel good. It's the little things that count, after all, and every mom deserves thanks and praise. We recommend that if you too are going through such under-appreciation at home and are being taken for granted, put an end to it immediately. Looking after yourself is critical to keep your family happy and in good working order! Read more

The one-bowl quick, easy, vegetarian and healthy banana bread recipe!
This is the easiest banana bread recipe. I have tried and tested so many versions. And this one comes out great everytime. Recently, I have been trying out eggless versions and I have pleasantly surprised. In this version, I used olive oil. Though you can replace it with the same amount of melted butter. Sweetness from the bananas varies. Add a couple more of bananas and avoid sugar for a sugar-free banana bread.
Baking is a science. Therefore, don't be afraid to add a few ingredients as an experiment to make it your own recipe.
Following is mine.
Preheat the oven at 180 degrees. Take a large bowl and add 3 whole ripe bananas (a great way to use up those over ripe bananas on the kitchen counter). Mash them up thoroughly. Add 1/2 cup oil (neutral oils do best like olive, sunflower, coconut), 1/2 cup of milk,1/2 cup of sugar and a few drops of vanilla essence (optional). Whisk and mix them well.
Keep a sieve on top of this bowl. Add a cup of whole wheat flour (you can use flour of your choice or availability), 1 tsp baking powder, 1 tsp baking soda, 1tsp cinnamon powder and 1 tsp salt. Sift and fold them into the wet ingredients. Add walnuts or any dry-fruits of your liking. This is optional. Do not overmix. Just cut and fold to incorporate the mixture.
Grease the pan and pour the batter. Lightly tap. Bake for 30 mins. Keep an eye on it. If the surface starts browning, cover it with aluminium foil and bake. Different ovens tend to cook in different time frames. The best way to ensure is to check the centre of the bread with a toothpick. Cool on a rack.
Best enjoyed with a glass of warm milk or a cup of tea. If you are feeling fancy add a dollop of whipped cream or a side of ice-cream. Enjoy! Read more
