Congratulations! You are in the second month of your pregnancy. Although most women don’t know they are pregnant by this time, those who do are very careful about their diet (just as they should be). Nutrition is of primary importance at this stage as it helps in the proper development of the foetus. The neural tube of the foetus develops during this time which then later develops into the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. A diet rich in vitamins, minerals, proteins and other nutrients is mandatory during this time and throughout the pregnancy to ensure that the baby develops well. Essential Nutrients That Should Be a Part of Your Diet in the Second Month of Pregnancy
Foods that you eat in the first trimester of your pregnancy will support the healthy development of your baby. Morning sickness and nausea may make you feel uneasy and you may not want to eat, but you should try to eat healthy food. Try and incorporate the foods that offer you as many nutrients as possible. Mentioned below are some nutrients that are vital for the baby’s development.
Folic Acid: An integral part of the 7-week pregnancy diet, folic acid serves the purpose of Vitamin B. A daily folic acid supplement of 5 mg is recommended to a woman who is trying to conceive as well as to a pregnant woman in her first trimester. Folic acid helps protect the unborn baby from developing neural tube defects. To meet your requirements of calcium, you can eat vegetables like turnip, cabbage, and leafy vegetables as they are all an excellent source of calcium.
Proteins: Protein is essential from the onset of pregnancy. Poultry foods like chicken and eggs, and milk, fish, and lentils provide the necessary protein required by the body. A minimum of 75 gms of protein is needed by an expectant mother at this stage. You can eat the protein-rich foods mentioned above. However, be careful about the fish you choose as certain types of fish (especially, the fish with high mercury content in them) are not safe for consumption for a pregnant woman and should be avoided during pregnancy.
Zinc: Zinc is needed for the metabolism of acid and biological functions. Chicken, fish, vegetables, and beans are all rich sources of zinc. Make sure you include these foods in your diet on a daily basis.
Fats: Fats are not always bad, but it is the kind of fat that you consume that will determine the healthy growth of your baby. There is no doubt that fried foods and foods containing saturated fat are detrimental to your health and your baby’s health. But a healthy intake of good fat in the form of ghee and cream will aid in the development of the eyes, brain, placenta, and tissues. Including good fats in your diet in healthy proportions will thus help in the overall growth of your baby.
Fibre: An important nutrient that aids digestion and prevents constipation, fibre is highly recommended to a pregnant woman. A fibre-rich diet made up of vegetables like carrots and cabbage, cereals, and fruits like oranges and bananas will help maintain your blood pressure and prevent constipation during pregnancy. A minimum intake of 28 gms daily is recommended during pregnancy.
Foods to Avoid in the Second Month of Pregnancy
The foods that should be avoided in the second month of pregnancy are mentioned below -
Meat Spreads: Meat spreads contain listeria that is harmful during this stage of pregnancy. It affects the growth of the baby, hence must be completely avoided.
Soft Cheese: Consumption of soft cheese like brie and camembert are not recommended as they may contain E. Coli bacteria, which may lead to complications in pregnancy. So you must avoid eating soft cheese during pregnancy, you can opt for hard cheese, but do eat it in a limit.
Raw Eggs: Raw eggs could spread the salmonella bacteria through the body causing a detrimental effect on the mother’s body and hampering the normal development of the baby. If you want to eat eggs during pregnancy, make sure you eat them in the boiled or poached form. Avoid eating half-boiled or semi-cooked eggs.
Processed Meat: Processed meat is stored on the shelves for long and run a risk of carrying bacteria that are harmful to the baby and you. So avoid including processed meat in your pregnancy diet.
Raw Fish: Seafood like crabs, prawns, shrimp etc., are high in mercury, which is known to cause a miscarriage. These foods are not rich in protein and do not provide the body with any necessary nutrition.
Unpasteurized Milk: Do not drink unpasteurized milk. Unpasteurized milk contains microorganisms, pathogens, and salmonella that are harmful to your body and the growth of the baby.
Alcohol: Alcohol is strictly not permitted as it could lead to several complications. It may affect your health and most important the growth of the baby. So avoid drinking alcohol throughout your pregnancy.
Consume fresh fruits, vegetables, fully cooked food, protein-rich foods to build your muscles and feel energetic. Consume more starchy food than sugary foods to up your calorie intake.

What is Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)?
In deep vein thrombosis, clotting of blood occurs in the veins found in the leg and pelvic region. Clotting of blood is a normal physiological process in the body and occurs when there are any cuts or openings in the blood vessel. In the case of DVT, this occurs inside the vein, constricting the flow of blood resulting in serious implications, if left unidentified. Thrombosis in pregnancy is caused by an increase in the blood clotting capacity of the body during pregnancy, as a means of preventing excessive blood loss during delivery. This can sometimes result in a blood clot in the leg during pregnancy.
How Common is DVT During Pregnancy?
DVT during pregnancy is not very common and occurs in only one in thousand pregnant women. The risk of developing DVT is six times more in a pregnant woman, with an increased chance of occurrence in the first trimester of pregnancy and six weeks post-partum.
Why is It More Common When Pregnant?
The body experiences numerous physiological changes during pregnancy. These changes are mostly driven by variations in the hormonal levels. One reason is one of the safety precautions that a woman's body takes during pregnancy, which is an increase in the clotting proteins and a decrease in the anti-clotting proteins, to minimize blood loss during delivery. Another factor that can contribute to this condition is pressure exerted by the enlarged uterus on the veins which carry blood to the heart from the lower body.
Causes of DVT
DVT during pregnancy is primarily caused by the hormonal changes the body undergoes during this period.
1. Oestrogen
During pregnancy, the circulating levels of oestrogen hormone are high in the blood, which in turn increases the chances of a blood clot.
2. Uterine Growth
The expansion of uterus that occurs with the development of the foetus, puts a lot of strain on the veins carrying blood back from the lower body to the heart. This also results in clotting of blood inside the veins returning from the extremities.
3. Increase in Body Weight
Excessive weight gain puts a lot of pressure on the veins of the legs and pelvis, leading to increasing the chances of having a DVT.
4. Multiple Pregnancy
Mothers carrying more than one foetus in their womb have a higher risk of developing DVT.
5. Age and Genetics
Women who have a family history of DVT or are expecting a baby at 35 years of age or more are at risk of experiencing venous thrombosis during pregnancy.
DVT Sign and Symptoms
Women who develop DVT during their pregnancy have one or more of the following symptoms:
Pain in one leg accompanied by swelling
Visibly enlarged veins
Pain while walking
The feeling of tenderness in the thighs and calf muscle
Diagnosis
Based on the symptoms and previous family history of DVT, the medical practitioner usually performs a Doppler ultrasound examination to check for any venous blocks. The Doppler ultrasound estimates the speed of blood flow in the veins and flags the areas that have reduced flow. The diagnosis of DVT can be very tricky, and in some cases, the doctor may prescribe a D-dimer test. This test works by identifying the presence of any blood clots in the blood vessels.
To quantify and characterize the block, doctors also carry out a venogram, in which a dye is injected into the veins to help in clearly visualizing the blockages.
Who is Most At the Risk of Getting DVT?
Pregnant women who have one of the following risk factors have an increased susceptibility to developing DVT.
A family history of DVT
Previous history of DVT
Age above 35 years
Obesity or weight gain
Women who travel long distances during pregnancy
Smoking
Inactive lifestyle
Multiple pregnancies
C-section delivery
Clotting or inflammation due to infection in pregnancy
Treatment of DVT in Pregnancy
Once a diagnosis of DVT during pregnancy is made, the doctor usually prescribes medications to thin the blood. This medication is continued after delivery up to at least six weeks post-partum, as there are chances of block formation even after the birth of the baby.
Does Deep Vein Thrombosis Affect the Baby?
Typically, DVT causes discomfort to the mother but does not affect the baby's growth and development. Rare situations where the block moves up till the lungs, affecting its function, it can hamper the oxygen supply to the foetus. Also, during delivery, when the mother loses excessive blood because of the blood thinners, it can affect the baby.
Management
Management of DVT during pregnancy is possible with heparin injections. Heparin is an anticoagulant that inhibits the clotting of blood. Apart from the medication, some lifestyle changes like adopting an active routine, reducing body weight and quitting smoking can also largely prevent the further clotting of blood.
A special kind of compression stockings can be worn to improve the blood circulation in the leg. Apart from that, drinking lot of water and exercising also helps in managing DVT.
How to Reduce the Risk of DVT While Travelling?
The chances of the symptoms of DVT flaring up is high during travel. To reduce the risk while travelling, take precautions like increasing your water intake, ensuring constant movement of the lower body either in the sitting position itself or by walking within the vehicle, and completely avoiding the intake of alcohol.
Can Deep Vein Thrombosis Affect Labour?
If you have been identified to have a tendency to develop DVT, then the doctor would advise you to take some precautions before the delivery. To reduce the risk of developing thrombosis during labour, you can wear the compression stockings while constantly moving around and drink lots of fluids before going to deliver the baby.
If you have already been diagnosed and are on heparin medications, the doctor may ask you to discontinue it as it can interfere with the clotting of blood after delivery.
Can Caesarean Delivery Increase Risk of Getting Blood Clots?
Yes, a C-Section delivery is shown to increase the risk of post-partum blood clots, as compared to a vaginal birth. This is because the body takes necessary precautions and mobilizes its healing mechanisms for an invasive procedure, one of which is an increase in the propensity of the blood to clot.
Prevention
Some of the ways by which you can prevent the occurrence of DVT during pregnancy are,
1. Drinking Lots of Water
Fluid intake is very important in the prevention of DVT as dilutes the blood and prevents it from becoming very thick. This has to be followed throughout pregnancy and even after the delivery to prevent the formation of blood clots.
2. Exercising
If you are at the risk of developing thrombosis during pregnancy, then practising light and safe exercises regularly can immensely help in improving the blood circulation to the body. Exercises that particularly benefit the circulation of the lower body can be helpful in preventing DVT.
3. Move on the Go
If you are having DVT and have to travel long distances on a regular basis, then try to move around inside the bus, flight or train every few minutes to break the resting period. This keeps the circulation alive. If getting up and moving around is not a possibility, then try to do simple twisting and moving exercises in sitting position itself.
4. Wear Stockings
Compression stockings that activate the blood circulation in the leg can be worn during pregnancy and even during labour to avoid clot formation.
DVT is a common condition in pregnancy that many women lack awareness about. It is easily treatable with medications and identifying it at the right time is the key to have a safe and healthy pregnancy.

I had just given birth and was exhausted. The room was jam-packed and the chattering of family members and relatives was not letting me sleep. In fact, I didn’t want to sleep; instead wanted to enjoy each and every second. The feeling of fulfilling my baby’s need was still missing from me. The doctor came in and asked whether I had fed her or not. He suggested that I make my baby sleep by my side so that it will create an eternal bond between both of us. And yes, this magic trick of the doctor really work like as a miracle overnight. I really felt that I had become a mother, the next morning.
Soon I realized, it did not begin from the day she was born; rather from the day I could feel her. The feeling of extreme, overpowering love; I see and feel it every day.
I didn’t know what I was in for, but I knew it was going to be something wonderful.
It was so easy to fall in love with her. It wasn’t, however, very easy to fall in love with being a mom. The sleepless nights, the exhausting days. The total flip-flop of my life.
Motherhood is absolutely beautiful. It’s also exhausting, exhilarating and incredibly scary at times. When it comes to the emotions and thoughts a new mom faces after the dust of childbirth settles, there’s no limit to what one can experience. It's a momentous time in a woman’s life and the feelings she deals with are guaranteed to be as big as the love for her child. Everyday brings new adventures entwined with love, warmth and care.

Fourth Trimester- You and your Baby
On hearing this term for the first time, most women wonder if there is a fourth trimester in pregnancy. As troublesome as that might be, this is usually a medical term that is used on rare occasions. Trimesters are considered as markers to track the growth of the child and monitor whether he is achieving all the milestones as expected. In the similar vein, this progress needs to be tracked once the baby is out of the womb as well, giving rise to this phase called as the fourth trimester.
What is Fourth Trimester?
The phase that starts right from your little one’s emergence into the world and up to completion of the first three months, is generally termed as the fourth trimester. As the development taking place in the womb is quite a challenge for the foetus, coming to terms with a totally new world outside the mother is an even bigger one for the newborn.
All the senses are at its peak and information begins pouring in torrents in the form of sight, sound, touch, smell, and many others. Your baby will start experiencing hunger and discomfort for the first time since his development and has barely any idea of how to cope with it. The warm and quiet environment inside the stomach has been replaced by a loud and cold world, which is quite unnerving for a little baby. This marks one of the most important stages of the child’s development.
Why is 4th Trimester Important for Your Newborn Baby?
Babies take their time in coming to terms with the world and cannot start living normally from the get-go. All a newborn has to rely on is his instincts and the hope that he will be taken care of.
Not all the senses are developed fully. Having spent all the time inside the womb, those were rarely needed. Your little one can see but not very clearly, can hear but fail to distinguish one sound from another, can sense touch but is quite rough and irritating as compared to the amniotic fluid he has been in throughout. The brain of the baby has developed fully but it is yet to reach its peak functioning ability. This occurs during his growth in parallel with processing what’s happening around him and coming to terms with it. Right now, your child’s brain is an open box taking everything in without filters.
Over the period of three months, babies begin to learn how to breathe properly and settle into a rhythm. The pangs of hunger and the impulses to sleep start organizing themselves in a schedule of sorts. He begins to know how to cry out for attention and also learn to spend time by himself. He understands the presence of other people in his life and might start recognizing specific sounds and smells.
Development of the Baby in the Fourth Trimester
Throughout the growth of the baby in the fourth trimester, there are certain signs around his behaviour that can be termed as important markers to monitor your baby’s development and check if everything is right on track.
Sleep
Sleeping is the most essential activity for a newborn child since that is when the most internal growth takes place. Many babies sleep for extended durations during this time, which allows their brains to sort out all the information taken in.
Establishing a routine around this might take longer than usual. Your child is just getting used to the concept of brightness and darkness and takes a while in understanding how to induce sleep to oneself. This is why most babies stay awake through the night or struggle to sleep in the day. That being said, it is necessary to ensure they get enough sleep, even if it means letting your little one sleep in the morning itself. Crying
Crying is the only way a newborn baby can communicate anything at all. Most babies continue crying for a month or more and later might reduce in those instances as they start to get a grip on things.
Whenever a baby feels hungry or ends up wetting himself or faces any discomfort or even just feels alone, stressed, or anxious, the only way he can let somebody know about it is crying out loud. Feeding

Not all cries of a baby indicate hunger. Over time, the pattern of cries starts changing and hitting a schedule as well, some indicating hunger while others indicating a wet diaper. The best sign to check for hunger is to gently touch their mouth. Most babies have a suckling reflex which triggers the moment they notice something close to their mouth. Newborn babies also need to learn to drink milk from the breast properly and it could take numerous feeds before both the mother and the baby find something that works for them. This is a great time for bonding together, too.
Senses
The fully-developed senses of the baby start getting sharper and improving throughout this phase.
The first to be noticed is the sight as your little one will begin to see your face clearly over the span of the trimester, reaching full clarity by the end of it. This can also be combined with the sense of hearing as your child’s eyes will try to locate the direction of the sound by looking around. Listening to various sounds and, especially, the mother’s voice is calming and soothing for him. He instantly feels safe and comforted.
With smell, taste and touch, these ones develop just as rapidly. After numerous feeds, your baby starts getting used to the smell of your body and the area near the breast. Which is why, even when half-asleep, most babies recognize a breast close to their face and will latch on to it to start suckling. The skin-to-skin contact at this stage further strengthens the bond, creating a sense of familiarity.
Physical Development
Newborn babies can barely move around or support themselves. All their movement is limb based and reflexive.
Over the trimester, you can help your child spend more time on the stomach and use his arms to push himself up. This starts letting your child lift his neck as well to look straight ahead. Repetitive exercises of these sorts are necessary for developing the strength for further development milestones.

The baby requires a lot of support and love during this period to feel safe and comforted. This can be achieved in various simple ways.
Let Your Baby Sleep in Hammocks
Hammocks feel a lot like sleeping in the uterus for your little one, being all snug and comfy.
Wrap Up Your Baby Properly
It provides a sense of security of being held together and also keeps their limb movements in check.
Take Your Baby Outside
A small walk outside, or a short car drive, can be helpful for your baby as a change in the environment.
Opt for Breastfeeding at all Times
Don’t refrain from giving your breast to him, and let him have a quick feed if he asks for it.
Sleep in the Same Room or the Same Bed
Let your little one’s crib be in the same room as yours and right next to you.
Give Your Little One A Nice Bath
Playing in the water provides a soothing feeling to the child, as well as encourages skin-to-skin contact with the mother.
Encourage Skin-To-Skin Contact
This helps the baby breastfeed even better and start establishing a communication channel with the mother.
How to take Care of yourself during this Period?

Essential Equipment in the 4th Trimester
With breastfeeding being the core of the baby’s growth throughout the fourth trimester, it is necessary for nursing mothers to have a few different types of equipment at hand.
If you have engorged breasts, make use of breastfeeding pads to help soak the milk leakage.
Opt for blouses or tops that have buttons or allow easy access to the breast.
Go for breastfeeding bras that not only support your breasts but allow the baby to feed easily as well.

The fourth trimester is a learning experience for both the baby as well as the mother in different ways.
Breastfeeding is Not Easy
Feeding your child requires a sync to take place between you and your baby and that can take anything from a few days to a few weeks. The body needs time to match the production with the demand and it is necessary to not worry about it too much.
Hormonal Changes Occur all Over Again
