6 Must Knows About Formula Feeding Your Baby
Doctors recommend exclusive breastfeeding for babies till the minimum age of 6 months. Breast milk provides the right nutrients and antibodies to strengthen your baby's immune system as well. However, due to various reasons, mothers may sometimes need to opt out of breastfeeding their little ones. In such cases, the ideal alternative is infant formula. Let's understand more about infant formula and formula feeding with these must-know guidelines below. This formula feeding guide will help ensure that your baby gets complete nutrition to grow and develop normally.
Although it is highly recommended that a baby be exclusively breastfed for the initial few months of his life, there are instances where a mother may need to feed formula milk. She may be suffering from poor milk supply, have personal problems, or need to get back to work. She may even be advised by a professional health expert to introduce or supplement with formula feeds in the infant's diet. This can happen if the baby is not gaining enough weight or when there are problems with bowel movements.
Here are 6 extremely crucial points one should keep in mind while feeding formula to babies.
Easy-to-Follow Formula Feeding Guide
Note: Always make sure you consult a paediatrician and weigh the formula feeding pros and cons carefully before starting with it. Having said that, here are few easy tips to remember that will ensure the little one is well-fed and healthy.
1. Always Toss Away The Leftover Formula In The Bottle
Your baby may drink half of the formula in the bottle and you might save the remaining formula for his next feeding trying to ensure no wastage. However, you shouldn't do so. Bacteria that entered from your baby’s saliva into the remaining formula may multiply, so its better to toss away the leftover formula.
Tip: It’s preferable to give smaller or less quantity feedings to avoid wastage. You can feed more frequently if need be, going by your baby's hunger cues such as licking lips, opening his mouth, being restless, or crying. You can read about hunger cues in babies in detail here.
2. Baby’s Poop Turns Darker & Smellier Due To Formula - It's Normal
Formula fed baby’s poop is usually darker in colour and firmer than breast fed baby’s poop. Also, poop of formula fed infant smells stronger than that of a breast fed infant. There is nothing to worry about; this is totally normal and happens due to the difference in composition between breastmilk and formula milk. However, if the baby's poop is either very runny or too hard, it indicates a problem. He may be suffering from dehydration, constipation or diarrhoea. See the paediatrician to diagnose the problem.
3. Formula-Fed Baby May Eat Less
Formula milk stays in the tummy of your baby for a long time, and it is more difficult to digest than breast milk. Also, it makes your infant feel full for several hours. So, your baby may eat lesser than breast fed baby. Also, your infant requires longer breaks between feedings. Plan his schedule accordingly.
4. It Is Not Mandatory To Warm Up Formula Before Feeding
Even if you feel like you must warm the formula milk and then provide the warmed milk to your baby, it is not necessary. Heating the formula milk does not increase nutrients or health benefits. Only the taste matters. Some babies like to have warm formula while some infants like cold formula or formula at room temperature. So, it is advisable to start giving room temperature warm formula to your little one and if he doesn’t like it then warm it up and feed it. However, make sure you do not heat it in a microwave. Doing this can affect the composition of the formula.
Another strict rule is to never reheat formula. Most formula milk brands forbid reheating formula as doing this can affect its composition and make it difficult to absorb for the baby. The standard shelf life of formula is 1.5 - 3 hours. If you have formula older than the given shelf life, do not use it.
5. Use Formula Feeding as a Method to Promote Family Bonding
Any family member, say father, grandparents, and siblings of the baby, can feed formula milk to your baby and share the pleasure of feeding the new member of your family. Thus, formula feeding promotes family bonding. Encourage loved ones to formula feed your baby when they are free. Only remember to choose the right bottle that matches your baby's age and needs. Instruct your family members to feed the baby in a suitable bottle-feeding position so the milk can go down properly. Holding the bottle with one hand at a 45-degree angle while supporting your baby in the other arm is a good option. Raise your baby's head slightly to prevent choking and ear infections.
There are multiple benefits of doing this. Your family members would love to cuddle your baby and feed him formula milk. Providing your baby such warmth and love also promotes his optimum brain development and bonding with the family.
6. Your Infant May Develop Allergic Reaction To Formula - Watch Out
Even though most infants digest formula easily, some babies may develop an allergic reaction to the cow’s milk protein content present in the formula. Baby’s bowel movements can tell you about the digestion of formula and whether your little one suffers from any allergic reaction due to formula.
If you find mucus or blood in bowels then it is a sign of allergy. Also, vomiting, skin rash, diarrhoea, and irritability are signs of allergy. Consult your doctor if you observe any such kind of allergic reaction, and your doctor may recommend an extra-hydrolyzed formula or formula prepared using soy. Read more

Loud Noises during Pregnancy - Does it Hurt the Unborn Baby?
If you are pregnant and are planning to attend a music concert soon then hold on. First, find out if your baby will be fine with that loud noise or not. Here we shall be discussing the impact of loud noise on the baby in a womb, and you will also know whether it is harmful to your baby or not.
When Do Babies Start Hearing In the Womb?
Somewhere around your fifth month of pregnancy or around 22 weeks of pregnancy, your baby’s inner ear also known as cochlea will be fully formed, which will be the basis of your baby’s hearing mechanism. This means that your little munchkin will be capable of hearing what you may be hearing, though not on the same level. You may even notice that any kind of loud noise may trigger a reaction from your baby and you may find your baby move with a startle or you may feel a jumpy thud in your belly.
Are Unborn Babies Protected Against Loud Sounds?
Your baby’s ears are well protected by your stomach muscles, the placenta, and the amniotic fluid. Therefore the sounds that your baby hears may be all muffled and softer. However, every pregnancy and baby is different, and it is not known what kind or intensity of noise may be fatal for your baby’s ears. Thus it is better to be careful and cautious when it comes to loud noises. Also, loud noises may not be good for the expecting mom because it may cause the production of stress hormones. The stress hormones may raise the mother’s heart rate which is again not good for the baby.
What Kind of Sounds Are Dangerous for Pregnant Women?
Constant exposure to loud noises for longer durations may result in hearing loss in the growing foetus. Therefore, in order to protect your unborn baby, you must stay away from the following kinds of noises, which may be dangerous for a pregnant woman:
Refrain from going to a firing area or range.
In case you are planning on attending any concert which involves loud music, refrain from sitting in the front row.
Stay away from the regular exposure to the loud noises of jet planes.
Do not work in a place where you hear loud noise more than 80 decibels on a regular basis.
How Can Loud Noise Harm the Foetus?
If you are wondering can loud noise hurt a foetus, the answer is yes; loud noises may harm the foetus in the following ways:
1. It May Startle the Baby
Any kind of loud sound or loud music during pregnancy may startle your baby. As a mother, you'd notice this. Whenever you will be exposed to loud noises, it may cause your baby to move rapidly in the womb or she may register intense foetal movements.
2. It May Affect Your Baby’s Hearing
Loud music or sounds may affect the hearing ability of the unborn baby. This is because a human can bear up to 80 decibels of sounds and any sound above this level may pose a potent threat to the hearing ability. Music concerts, jet planes, or places with heavy machinery, may produce a much higher frequency of sound (110 decibels or more), which may cause damage to your baby’s hearing.
3. It May Cause Foetal Abnormalities
Any kind of exposure to loud noises in the first trimester of pregnancy or in later stages may pose a great threat to foetal abnormalities. This is because constant exposure to loud noises may lead to hypertension or stress in the expectant mother. These conditions have a direct impact on foetal development and may lead to various congenital abnormalities. It may also affect the motor skills or the ability of the baby and in some cases it may even lead to low birth weight in babies.
4. It May Induce Stress in Babies
In various studies conducted on rhesus monkeys and rats, it was observed that consistent exposure to loud noises resulted in increased amounts of cortisol and corticotrophin in the foetus. The rise in the level of these hormones is indicative of increased stress levels. Some monkey babies exhibited abnormal social behaviour, too. However, there has been no substantial study that supports that loud noise inducing stress in the growing foetus, but it adversely affected the lactogen levels of the mother.
5. It May Cause Changes in Foetal Brain Structure
In various studies conducted on different animals, it was established that loud music or loud noise of any kind might affect or cause changes in the foetal brain structure. However, similar kinds of results are expected in human babies too. Therefore, try to stay away from loud noises during pregnancy.
6. It May Increase the Risk of Preterm or Premature Babies
There are many reasons that may cause your baby to be born much before his due date, and exposure to loud noise is one of them. In some studies, it was observed that consistent exposure to loud noise might reduce the gestation period from the 40 weeks to 37 weeks.
The above-mentioned are some of the ill effects of being exposed to loud noise during pregnancy. As stated above, some of the studies do not have substantial claims supporting the ill effects of loud noise, but it is always better to exercise caution when it concerns your baby.
Can You Listen Soft Sound or Soft Music during Pregnancy?
There is no doubt that music is one thing that really makes us feel pepped up and happy. However, you might wonder if you can listen to your favourite music during pregnancy or not. The answer is yes, you can listen to music during pregnancy provided you listen to it at a lower volume or within authorised limits. Contrary to loud music, softer music has a positive impact on the mother and on her unborn baby. Music which is played at 70 decibels or lower levels than that has proved to very effective in providing calming effects to the mother and her baby. You can pick up any music or songs that you like and play that music and enjoy.
Various studies are still in progress to establish the ill effects of loud noise on the growing foetus. However, staying away from loud sounds and music can do no harm. Therefore, stay away from places where there is noise, turn that stereo down to a low volume, and skip that rock concert until your baby arrives.

Appendicitis in Children
Watching your child deal with excruciating pain and not knowing the reason is a known way for parents to have panic attacks. When your child has a stomachache or a headache, it’s almost an instinct to call the doctor. Sometimes however, an illness or condition leaves parents helpless. The first step towards fighting a condition that you can’t manage for your child is to understand it. Conditions like appendicitis are extremely painful for children and can lead to more severe repercussions if left untreated. In fact, if left untreated for too long, appendicitis can become life threatening.
Video: Appendicitis in Children - Signs, Treatment & Prevention
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ev_3aJTtqqM
What is Appendicitis?
Appendicitis is a condition that is caused because the appendix which is located in the lower abdomen has become inflamed or filled with pus. An enlarged appendix that leads to lower abdominal swelling is one of the most painful conditions a young child can face during their development. Appendicitis can afflict anyone between the ages of ten to thirty. According to most pediatric specialists appendix pain in children is more common than appendix pain in adults.
This condition is not at all contagious and if caught early can be treated without problems. Sometimes doctors will recommend surgery to remove the appendix in children; there is no need to worry. This procedure is extremely low risk.
In cases where the appendix is infected, it has been known to explode causing the spread of harmful bacteria that may spread the already existing bacterial infection or cause an abscess.
Once appendicitis has a positive diagnosis however, consult a doctor on treatment options immediately. This condition can deteriorate quickly and may lead to possible fatal outcomes.
Is Appendicitis Common in Children?
Appendicitis is a common condition that affects a lot of children on a regular basis; it is also something that can affect adults. Understanding who is most at risk can help you identify if a loved one may be affected and the breakdown of age groups most at risk are:
Appendicitis is mostly common in children between the ages of 9-15. This is known as pediatric appendicitis.
It has been known to manifest in adults up to the age of thirty but is not as common. The second most common age group for appendicitis is 16-30.
This condition is highly unlikely to affect toddlers, infants and adults above 30 get appendicitis. Although extremely rare, children from the age of 2 to 8 and adults beyond the age of 30 can theoretically be affected by this.
What Causes Appendicitis In Children?
This condition occurs due to the appendix getting inflamed, swollen or infected. This can happen because the organ itself is exposed to and interacts with stool, parasites and mucus. This causes a drastic dilution or blockage of blood supply to the organ itself leading the organ to lose nourishment and eventually die. Every organ requires blood supply as a source of nourishment, the appendix is the same. The lack of blood penetrating this wall of infections and impurities causes an increase in pressure from the organ itself, leading for it to start tearing and creating holes this is called an appendix rupture. This rupture results in the leaking of the appendix into the abdominal cavity, leading to possible abscesses.
Predominantly, there are two reasons why children develop appendicitis. They are:
Obstructions: Obstruction could be complete or partial. It could be caused by a number of reasons such as an injury, foreign organisms, worms, tumors or cancer.
Infections: When the body is fighting an infection, the appendix tends to swell up. However, some infections cause the intestinal lymph nodes to swell up, which can cause a blockage to the appendix.
Signs and Symptoms of Appendicitis in a Child
There are many signs and symptoms that indicate appendicitis in your child. Knowing these signs will help you be prepared in case of any issue with your child’s appendix.
Pain in the lower abdominal region: The appendix is located on the lower right side of the abdomen. If your child is suffering from appendicitis, he will complain of pain in the area. However, not all abdomen pain is indicative of appendicitis.
Loss of appetite: A consistent loss of appetite with no enthusiasm towards his favorite foods could indicate that your child has appendicitis.
Low to mild fever: Appendicitis is sometimes accompanied by a mild fever between 99 and 102 degrees.
Nausea and vomiting: Any prolonged bouts of nausea and vomiting should be brought to the notice of your pediatrician.
Pain while urinating: Any pain in the lower abdomen area could cause difficulty in urination.
Diarrhea: This symptom occurs a few days after the appendicitis begins. If your child suffers from sustained diarrhea, then you must get medical attention for your child.
Constipation: This is also a common symptom for appendicitis.
Swelling of the abdomen: A tenderness of the stomach along with inflammation could be indicative of appendicitis.
Painful cramps: Appendicitis is usually accompanies with sharp and excruciating pain in the abdomen.
Risk Factors
There are certain risk factors that are unavoidable. These are because they are not in your control. Neither you nor your doctor can deny these factors. These include:
Age: It remains unknown why children and young adults are most likely to develop appendicitis. The age group between 10-30 is most vulnerable.
Infections: An infection in the gastro-intestinal area could be the precursor to appendicitis.
Trauma: An injured appendix could cause appendicitis with higher chances of it getting ruptured. The injury could be caused by contact sports or an accident.
One of the risk factors for appendicitis that you can control is having a low fiber diet. This diet particularly causes constipation. Some of the hardened stool can get itself lodged in the appendix and can cause swelling. You can avoid this situation by having a diet that is rich in fiber.
Complications of Appendicitis
Peritonitis: If a condition of appendicitis is ignored and is not removed in time by a surgeon, the appendix could burst and spill all of its infected fluids to leak into the abdominal cavity. This could then infect the lining of the abdomen. This condition is known as peritonitis. If the condition is not treated with antibiotics, it could be life threatening.
Abscess: If the infected fluids mix with the intestine, it causes an abscess filled with puss. The abscess is either treated with antibiotics or is drained out through a tube.
Septicemia: The ruptured appendix contents release harmful bacteria into the blood stream. These bacteria could cause an infection of the blood called septicemia. This can be dangerous and must be treated as an emergency.
Diagnosing Appendicitis in Kids
Diagnosing appendicitis in children can be hard as it exhibits various symptoms that are not exclusive to this condition. A full medical history plus an initial physical exam will help your doctor with the diagnosis. If he does suspect appendicitis, he will ask for more tests.
Blood tests: This test is most common as it is an easy test to tell if there is any infection in the body.
Urine test: A urine test is carried out to rule out kidney and bladder infections
Abdominal Ultrasound: This diagnostic procedure is used to see how your body’s internal organs and blood vessels function.
CT or CAT scan: This diagnostic tool combines X-ray technology with computer technology to get imaging that is clear and crisp.
Treatment for Children’s Appendicitis
The treatment for your child’s appendicitis is based on a lot of factors. These include:
The extent of the problem
Age, overall health, and medical history
Allergies to medications
Tolerance towards certain procedures
Since the nature of appendicitis is in itself considered an emergency and one that could lead to serious complications, the best option to treat appendicitis is through surgery where the appendix will be removed. Do not worry; since the appendix is a vestigial organ, it has no particular function.
How is Surgery for Appendicitis Done?
The appendix will be removed surgically. This is usually done in one of two methods.
Open method: This surgery is conducted under general anesthesia. An incision is made on the lower right side of the abdomen, near the appendix. The surgeon will then find and remove the appendix. If the appendix has ruptured, she will insert a tube into the abdominal cavity to drain out all the fluids.
Laparoscopic method: This surgery is considerably newer and involves making several tiny incisions. Through these incisions, a camera and light source are inserted for the surgeon to see what is happening. He will then remove the appendix. This method results in minimal scarring and quicker recovery time. However, it is not recommended if the appendix has ruptured.
What Happens After Appendicitis Surgery?
Post-surgery, your child will not be allowed to eat or drink any fluids as her intestines recover. Her nutrition will be taken care of with intravenous (IV) fluids through which medication will also be administered. If her appendix had ruptured, then she will have to stay longer in the hospital longer than if it hadn’t. In either case, your child will have to continue taking antibiotics even after she is discharged for a certain period of time.
After discharge, your child must not play any contact sports or lift heavy objects. Some of the pain medications prescribed can cause constipation. Talk to your doctor about this and try to find a solution for the same. Light movements after the surgery instead of staying still will help reduce the occurrence of constipation. Once your child can eat solid foods again, she must have a fiber rich diet and drink plenty of water and soups.
What to Do if the Child’s Appendicitis Has Ruptured?
Ruptured appendix in a child can seem very frightening. It is caused when the wall of the appendix weakens enough to rupture due to the fluid buildup inside it. When it ruptures, there will be a temporary abatement in the pain. A ruptured appendix could cause many other issues. Abscess formation is quite common. Scar tissue will soon start to develop around the abscess to ward it from further infections.
Preventing Appendicitis in Children
There is no sure way of preventing appendicitis in children or adults. However, medical experts are of the opinion that persons who have a high fiber diet seem to suffer less from appendicitis. This is because such a diet reduces the chances of hard stools causing any issue with the intestines.
Home Remedies for Appendicitis
There are many home remedies that will help ease the pain and discomfort of your child.
Mint is known for relieving pain. Mix a couple of drops of mint essential oil in water and ask your child to drink up.
If your child has a fever due to the appendicitis, then you can boil a few basil leaves in water. After it cools down, strain it and give your child the clear liquid to drink.
Garlic will help reduce the inflammation. Boil a few pods of garlic in water. Add honey for sweetness.
Moong beans are said to help with appendicitis. Give your child a spoon full three times a day.
Buttermilk reduces the growth of bacteria in the gut. However, it is effective only when a liter is consumed.
A tea made from steeping fenugreek seeds in hot water can help with the mucous and waste in the intestine.
Give your child a combination of carrot, beet and cucumber daily.
Lemon juice and honey will help with any digestive issues.
Ask your pediatrician if your child can consume ginseng tea. If yes, then give it to your child twice a day.
Provide green vegetables and fresh fruits will help make sure that your child doesn’t develop constipation.
Give your child a paste of turmeric and ginger as they are anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial.
Ginger has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antiemetic properties. Hence give it to your child in a candied form.
Whole wheat will help your child’s digestive system.
When to Contact Your Child’s Doctor?
Childhood appendicitis is extremely treatable but can be serious. You should rush your child to the doctor if none of the symptoms seem to be abating. If your child is in severe pain, then seek immediate medical assistance. A ruptured appendix causes more complications and is harder to recover from. Reaching your doctor early enough is a key to a quick recovery.
Conclusion: Appendicitis can be an exhausting and excruciating experience for everyone involved, follow your doctor’s instructions, and treat the condition fully and at an early stage to help your child live a long healthy life. Do not medicate your child without your doctor’s knowledge or prescription. For the treatment to be completely effective ensure you fully disclose all information about your child’s medical history to your doctors. Read more

India in 21st century : Is it safe for a girl child?
Rape, molestation, harassment, abuses and many more.... things a woman facing in her day today life. Everyday when I turnover the pages of newspaper, check social media feel ashamed for all such stuffs. Is it the India we have dreamed for ??? A big question to all of us. This only indicate that we are surrounded by sick mentality people. Somewhere it's also the failure of system and laws. If such cases continues can we imagine what type of India we are going to gift our next generation.
Candle March, protestations, posting these stuffs on social media may not be the permanent solution to the problems. So what can we do ??? Increase in such crimes implies the unsafetyness of a girl child irrespective of age is a major threat to the society. I was in shock when came to know about the rape case happened with the 3 months old baby. This only indicate sick intention towards a baby girl, nothing else. Let's try to stop these by taking few steps.
Firstly respect the ladies around you whether She is your mother or wife. Kids learn from home. They will learn how to behave with woman. Also parents should be friendly in nature with their kids as they are grown up.
Secondly we should teach our boys to be humble and to change the look after the girls of their age. This can be possible if sexual education classes should be introduced in school.
Thirdly implement of strong laws against such cases can stop it. As there is no strong law against such crime so it is increasing day by day. Strong law will induce fear which can inhibit such cases.
Lastly, many times I have seen in Indian families, while they put restrictions for girl child but not the same for boy child. It's time to treat both of them equal. Small things also have remarkable come back. Start from own house and one day India will be safe for girl child. And after that we can proudly say that we live in a country where our girls are able to go out of their house irrespective of time. That will be a day we celebrate as true Independence day. Read more

Adult ADHD Is Very Much a Real Thing
If you thought ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder only affects children, you are mistaken. ADHD has been known to affect adults, especially women, quite as much! This ADHD Awareness Month 2015 in October, stop ADHD from affecting your quality of life.
Do you know of something that can damage your memory, concentration and ability to control emotions? ADHD! This often disregarded mental disorder can manifest in adults very frequently, and, if left untreated, can even lead to incidences of substance abuse and depression. It is crucial to understand that adult ADHD is very much real!
What Is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder In Adults
ADHD is a chronic disorder impairing social, emotional and work functioning in kids as well as adults. The symptoms can be more severe and more damaging in adults, but are often confused with stress and exhaustion. The symptoms usually show themselves as lack of concentration and organisation, risk taking behaviour, reduced listening skills, and lack of initiative or patience to finish even important tasks.
What Causes ADHD In Adults
Contrary to popular belief, ADHD is not a result of factors such as poor parenting, family issues or even too much television and social media! The causes are genetic and some pertain to brain functioning. Anyone can be affected by ADHD irrespective of age, gender or standard of living.
Diagnosis Of ADHD In Adults
if you're wondering how do you test for ADHD in adults, this can be a difficult and complicated process. Your physician will take into account a number of factors and symptoms. In order for ADHD to be diagnosed, adults with ADHD must demonstrate significant problems with daily life in several areas such as work and relationships, for a minimum period of six months. Your doctor will check for the presence of these traits of ADHD in adults. Unfortunately, a single test cannot confirm that a person has ADHD.
Don't let ADHD get the better of you. To deal with it, the first step is accepting the presence of a problem. Consult with your family and your doctor and get on medication as well as therapy such as meditation, support groups and counseling. ADHD is a common and largely manageable problem – but only if you stop disbelieving that adults too can get it! Read more
