Godh Bharai (The Indian Baby Shower) Ceremony
Events that celebrate pregnancy and childbirth are part of human history. Baby showers go far back into history and were not the consumer-driven events that they are today. In ancient India, the mother was given gifts in the form of fruits and other edibles which would help the baby grow. This has changed over time, and its current form is known as the Godh Bharai.
What is Godh Bharai?
This ancient Indian tradition is like the western concept of baby showers. It is a celebration of the upcoming motherhood and acts as a support mechanism for women who are towards the end of their pregnancy. ‘Godh Bharai’ is a Hindi term and translates to “fill the lap”.
Some of the other variants celebrated in different parts of the country include:
1. Bengal
Known as Shaad, this lays heavy emphasis on delicious food and takes place during the last month of pregnancy. A unique aspect of this celebration is that gift giving for the baby is not encouraged as it is believed to bring bad luck.
2. Kerala
Known as Seemandham, rituals are interwoven with the ceremony as the mother to be must partake in a holy dip. The intelligence of the unborn baby is given paramount importance, with chanting and prayers dedicated towards this goal lasting for almost 90 minutes.
3. Tamil Nadu
Known as Valai Kappu, the mother-to-be is decked up in a black saree with red and green bangles to ward of unholy entities. Temples play a central role with at least four different temple visits being a crucial part of the ceremony.
4. Punjab
The godh bharai rasam is celebrated during the 7th month of pregnancy with close family members. The mother in law has a central role to play where she places a dupatta with fruits and coconuts on her daughter’s lap after prayers.
5. Gujarat
Known as the Godh Bharna, it has some similarities with its Punjabi variant in the sense that the mother-in-law has a meaty role to play. The mother to be is seated cross-legged on a furniture article known as the baajotth. Then, the mother in law places jewellery and other gifts on her lap.
6. Maharashtra
Known as the Dohal Jevan, the Marathi term roughly translates to “To satisfy the food craving”. As evidenced by the name, there is a substantial emphasis on the food aspect of this ceremony with nutritious foods such as rice and sweet chapati finding its way to the menu. An exciting aspect of this ceremony is the gender association with each food which can be turned into a gender guessing game.
When is it Performed?
India is a vast country, and there is no one way to perform this ancient art of the celebration of motherhood. The Nair community of Kerala for instance, do it during the last month or pregnancy. In neighbouring Tamil Nadu, it is sometimes done in the fifth month of pregnancy, although this can be pushed to the seventh or even ninth month.
Importance of Indian Baby Showers
Indian baby showers are a cultural innovation and must be viewed in its historical context. Due to the emergence of modern medical technologies and specialised care, pregnancies are relatively safe. This wasn’t the case even a century ago where there was a high mortality rate, with many women succumbing to various complications such as excessive bleeding. Godh Bharai, sometimes, was the last celebration for a woman which is why prayer is a vital part of the ceremony.
How is it Performed?
Prayers are an essential part of most Godh Bharai occasions with formal prayers and chants being recited in unison.
Like any other occasion, dressing up is crucial, and you will be clothed in traditional wear and adorned with flowers.
In many parts of the country, anointing oils have a special place, and you are often anointed by the senior women of the family.
What good is a celebration without some fun? Games are played with the baby in mind and can range from guessing the sex to a choosing a name.
As part of the Indian baby shower traditions, singing and dancing are inseparable.
Some amount of teasing is always done to the mother to be. However, all of it is done in good humour without the intention to hurt anyone.
In some parts of the country, only women guests are allowed.
Living up to the name of godh bharai rasam, the womenfolk of the family along with your girlfriends will fill your lap with sweets and fruits.
You will be made to sit in an easily accessible spot where your friends and relatives can come and bless you.
The gifting part of this baby shower is mother-centric and can include bangles, sarees and other apparels. Like the Shaad, many communities believe that gifts for the baby should only come once the baby is born.
Tips for Making Godh Bharai Ceremony More Enjoyable
1. Rest
The celebrations can get a little hectic for someone who is expecting. Make sure that you have adequate rest before and after the ceremony. Have designated spots in the venue reserved for you so that you can be seated at a moment’s notice.
2. Clothing
The weather can play spoilsport to your ceremony in an unexpected manner. During summers, avoid wearing sarees that have stiff silk or a lot of embroidery work as it can work up a sweat. During winters, don’t hesitate to get your partner’s coat along in case you’re feeling too cold.
3. Restricted Eating
Because there is so much good food around, it can be very tempting to partake in the festivities. Remember that your diet is important and indulging can lead to issues like heartburn and fluctuations in blood sugar.
4. Guest Entertainment
Keeping your guests satisfied and content is key to having a good ceremony. Apart from good food, you could hire a henna artist who can do work on the ladies at the venue.
5. Return Gifts
If you have a big budget or want to thank all the guest for showing up, you could send them a parting gift. This could be purchased from the store such as traditional women’s items like dupattas or even a hand-made thank you card.
Amazing Ideas for Indian Baby Showers
A baby shower celebration in India is a traditional affair, but there are no restrictions on making a few changes. Following are some ideas that you could use:
1. Baby Theme
A Godh Bharai ceremony can always have a theme to go along with it. One of the most popular ones is a baby theme where everything from the paper plates to the napkins has a baby on it.
2. Potluck
Catering can cost a lot of money and usually ends up in wasted food. You and your girlfriends can decide what’s on the menu and each person gets their dish.
3. Pampering the Mommy To Be
The essence of a baby shower is letting everyone know that you are the centre of attention. This means the celebrations are low key and the budget is oriented towards making you feel special. This could include coupons to a spa or a salon.
4. Diet Friendly
If Godh Bharai is about you, why is it that you aren’t allowed to touch most of the food served? Here’s where you can change things. The catering can be done where only healthy snacks and pregnant-friendly foods are allowed.
5. Do It Yourself (DIY) Baby Shower
Baby showers needn’t always be about fancy venues and stage events. A DIY baby shower is one which emphasises using your skills to create a good Baby shower environment. Handmade ribbons can be given to the guests, decorations can be made from chart paper, and even the gifts to be given must all be hand-made.
6. Environment-Friendly Theme
Are you a nature lover? Provided the weather is pleasant, the ceremony can be held outdoors. The venue can be a plastic-free zone with paper plates and cups replacing plastic. Eating with the hand will be encouraged to avoid plastic spoons, and minimal decoration will be put up.
A baby shower is held at a time when you are on the journey to motherhood and need all the support of those around you. With the anxiety, insomnia and digestive problems, the celebration of being around your family and friends is an excellent break.

How to Deal With Dandruff in Babies
Skin conditions are common in children when they are growing up because their skin is still sensitive and is building its defence against the bacteria around it. Most skin conditions can cause irritability and discomfort, depending on where they afflict the child. Dandruff is a skin condition that affects your child's scalp. This is one of the most common and widespread infections kids can get.
What Is Dandruff?
Dandruff is a mild form of a skin condition, also known as seborrhoea dermatitis. It involves the scaling of the skin on the scalp and, sometimes, even the eyebrows and eyelashes. The skin scales and causes tiny, white flakes. While dandruff is harmless, it can cause itching and redness. If left untreated, it can cause hair fall. Make it a point to visit your doctor if you see dandruff or excessive hair fall in your child, as other conditions can also cause the same symptoms. One such condition is lice infestation in children. While there are several over-the-counter remedies available to treat dandruff, it is advisable to seek medical help as some treatments may cause allergic reactions in children.
Causes of Dandruff in Babies
There are many reasons why your baby can develop dandruff. These include:
1. Fungal Growth
The fungus Malassezia can cause excessive shedding of dead skin cells on the scalp. When these cells mix with the sebum produced by oil glands, it causes dandruff.
2. Over-Shampooing
Using too much shampoo can result in all the natural oils in the scalp getting stripped away. This causes the skin to dry out, which then results in dandruff. Sometimes, it is possible for dermatitis to occur also due to the effect of chemicals on the skin.
3. Not Shampooing Enough
It is very important to maintain the hygiene of the scalp as it can accumulate dead skin, dirt, and oils very quickly, which can lead to dandruff.
4. Skin Conditions
Certain skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis result in dandruff.
5. Heat
If the scalp is exposed to too much heat, such as when it is under direct sunlight, it may develop dandruff.
6. Humidity
The lack of humidity, especially in the winter months, could result in the scalp drying out.
7. Oily Scalp
All scalps produce oil to keep the skin moisturized and healthy. However, if the oil production is excessive, it can cause dandruff.
Signs and Symptoms of Dandruff in Infants
There are several signs of dandruff that you can keep an eye out for. Some of these include:
Dryness of skin near the scalp, forehead, and eyelids
Greasy patches of the skin
Redness
Itching
White flakes on the skin
Is Dandruff the Only Reason for Scales on a Baby's Head?
While dandruff is the most common reason for the appearance of scales on your baby’s head, it is not the only reason. Other reasons include:
Sunburn
Improper washing off of shampoo
Cradle cap
Ringworm
Ways to Get Rid of Dandruff
Some baby dandruff home remedies that you can try are:
1. Brush and Shampoo
Use a soft-bristled brush to gently brush your baby’s scalp. This will remove the dead flakes. Then, use a mild shampoo to wash your baby’s hair.
2. Medicated Shampoo
If dandruff persists, consult your baby’s doctor and ask for a prescription for a medicated shampoo. Follow the instructions given by your doctor as well as those on the shampoo bottle.
3. No Conditioner
Under no circumstances should you use conditioner on your baby’s hair. It could seriously change or damage the nature of her hair and scalp.
4. Rinse
Ensure that any traces of the shampoo are washed off thoroughly before drying your baby's hair with a soft towel.
5. Soothe
Sometimes, scratching the affected skin can exacerbate the condition. Instead, use products like coconut oil, aloe vera, or even butter to alleviate any inflammation and irritation of the skin.
It is highly recommended that you consult a doctor before starting treatment for any of these conditions. Do not self-diagnose dandruff or any other skin condition and seek medical advice for treatment plans specific to your child.
FAQs
1. Is Baby Dandruff Contagious?
While dandruff can be unsightly or even cause itching and irritation in your baby, it is not contagious. Your baby can continue to interact with other children and adults just the way he is used to.
2. What Is Cradle Cap and How Is It Different From Dandruff?
Cradle cap is also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis. It is a skin condition that affects infants. While it starts on the scalp, it can spread to other parts of the body. It is characterized by red bumps and progresses to form yellow, crusty skin that flakes when touched. While dandruff can affect anyone at any age and needs attention, cradle cap usually affects infants within the first three months of their lives and lasts only for the first year.
If your baby's scalp starts to crack, bleed, or ooze, take him the doctor immediately. These symptoms could be early signs of other infections.
Dandruff must be given medical attention if it persists for a long period with no signs of abating, or if the hair fall due to the dandruff is excessive. Make sure that you use only quality branded products on the skin and scalp of your baby. Keep your baby’s head covered when going outside to protect his sensitive skin. If you give your baby regular oil massages, make sure not to neglect the scalp while also ensuring that the oil is not left on for too long. Do not worry too much about dandruff on your baby’s scalp as this condition is easy to fix. You can talk to a pediatric dermatologist if you are still worried.
Hygiene is an important part of preventing dandruff in children, so ensure you wash their hair regularly, apply oil if the hair is very dry, and use a shampoo that is specific to your child’s hair type.

Groin Pain in Children - Causes, Signs, and Treatment
Children are mischievous and naughty by default. So, it’s no wonder they are always getting hurt playing or fooling around. And sometimes they get pains without doing any mischief due to various reasons. Due to their active nature, kids often get hurt, feel pain, and forget all about it as soon as they get better. That’s the beauty of being young. Knowing that their kids will get hurt and have pains, parents sometimes ignore common pains. However, it would help if you didn’t ignore some pains as they indicate something serious. One such frequent complaint in growing-up kids is groin pain.
What Is Groin Pain?
Groin pain is an injury in the groin area when the child overstretches or tears or pulls a groin muscle. A child's sudden groin pain occurs due to over-stretching or straining of groin muscles, nerves, ligaments, tendons, or bones. Groin muscles are found in the creases where the belly meets the legs on both body sides.
When your child exercises, lifts, or falls, they might strain their groin. Groin pain in a toddler can also happen when the toddler accidentally falls or injures their groin area. The injury might be anything from a slight muscular strain to a catastrophic muscle tear symptomized by fever and groin pain in the child.
When the legs are pressed together, your kid may feel discomfort and soreness that grows worse. When lifting the knee on the affected side, your kid may experience pain. When walking, groin pain in a child may result in swelling or bruising in the inner thighs. If your kid has a severe strain, they may hobble as the injury heals.
Causes and Risk Factors
The actual reason for groin discomfort in kids is hard to ascertain. In most cases, groin pain occurs due to a recent groin muscle injury. Some causes and risks factors of groin pain are:
Any previous injury
Lifting of heavyweight or sudden fall
Excessive exercise
Strenuous workout without adequate warming up, resulting in muscle tear or strain
Sudden direction change while running, normally in sports
Excessive spreading of the legs during stretching exercises
Injury to the groin muscle as a result of an accident
Hip inward twisting can irritate the hip joint and cause groin pain
Impact-induced scrotal contusion, bruise, or damage to the scrotal sac
Sports hernia, also known as athletic pubalgia
Hip issues include septic arthritis, hip rheumatoid arthritis, femoral epiphysis, transitory synovitis, developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), and juvenile idiopathic arthritis
Signs and Symptoms of Groin Pain in Kids
To know whether the child has groin pain, the parents or caregiver can look for these symptoms and signs in the child:
Severe hip pain with restricted motion of the hip joints.
Sudden knee pain, thigh pain, and joint pain.
Difficulty in lifting the knees.
Abnormal walking style
Swelling, bruising, and tenderness in the groin area
Limping on occasion or showing a reluctance to walk
Testicular growth
Skin color change of area in and around the groin
Leg weakness
Treatment for Groin Pain in Kids
The first step to treat groin pain is to know the underlying reason causing it. After determining the cause, the doctor usually advises the children to get adequate rest and no indulgence in strenuous activities such as sports or exercising. The child and the parents must follow the orthopedic specialist’s advice and adhere to activity moderation.
Groin pain normally gets cured on its own in a month or two. However, the following steps can fast-track the healing process and improve muscle strength.
1. Cold Therapy
To ease discomfort and reduce swelling, use an ice pack wrapped in a towel to the groin area several times a day for a duration of 10 to 20 minutes.
2. Warm Therapy
Once the swelling has subsided, use a heating pad or hot water bottle to the groin area. Warm and cold treatment may also be useful in reducing joint and thigh pains.
3. Medicine
You can take OTC (over-the-counter) medication or prescribed pain medication to relieve the pain. Doctor consultation is advisable to know the correct dosage.
4. Addressing The Cause
If groin discomfort is caused by a certain activity or training regimen, it is simple to stop or adjust that practice and allow the body to recover itself. A physiotherapist can help the child build their muscles and cure the ailments by providing training and workout advice.
5. Walking Aids
A doctor may recommend walking crutches to help the child walk. To wrap the groin area and reduce muscle strain, use a groin support bandage.
6. Strength and Flexibility
Low flexibility and muscular strength in the groin area induce several groin problems, such as hip flexor strain and adductor tendinopathy. Activities that build core muscle strength can help treat groin issues.
How Can You Prevent Groin Pain in Children?
Groin pain in children can be prevented by following or taking care of a few things. They are:
Groin pain or injuries in the children can be prevented when the parents tell their children about strengths and limits. Knowing their strengths and limits, the child won’t over-exert or over-strain the muscles when they feel any weakness or pain, thereby avoiding groin strains.
When the child has prior incidents of groin pain, then you should take precautions to avoid the scenarios that caused it.
Following an adequate warm-up routine before and cool-down activity after exercising and sports can reduce the chances of muscle injury. It should be followed diligently, especially if the child has a history of groin pain, to prevent it in the future.
The child should be encouraged to take up a new sport or physical activity or resume the earlier played sport at a slower pace. Once the child gains agility and strength, the intensity and the duration of the physical activity can gradually increase.
Following a regular exercise routine will help the child develop their core strength and prevent muscle injury.
When to Consult a Doctor?
When the below symptoms and signs are visible in the child, then the parents or caregiver should consult a doctor:
The child has sudden or severe groin or knee pain after playing some sport or exercising.
The groin pain has not subsided after proper rest.
Swelling or change of skin color of the upper thigh region
Numbness or weakness in the legs or difficulty moving them
It is common for children and teens to have groin pain when participating in sports, exercising, lifting weights, or doing heavy workouts. Fortunately, groin pain is rarely debilitating, and children can naturally recover by taking proper rest and following their physician’s instructions. If the pain persists, however, then they should consult their physician.
