15 Ways to Get Rid of Flies in Your Home
When the summer comes around, flies come too. Whether you live in a big city, outskirts of a city, or in a town - flies are everywhere. They fly and crawl on almost anything, faeces in particular, then they land on kitchen tops and food, and contaminate them. Although flies may not seem dangerous, they spread various infections. It's time that you learn to get rid of the flies in your home. There are many effective remedies for flies. Read on to find out!
Use Natural Fly Repellents
There are a number of things readily available in our houses that can be used to trap and kill house flies. Here are some effective home remedies for flies in the house.
1. Hot Pepper Repellent
To get rid of the flies in and around your house use hot pepper. They avoid flying around these plants or landing close to foods containing hot pepper. The irritation is thought to be caused by their inability to breathe whenever they smell hot pepper. Therefore to get rid of them, grow some hot pepper plants in your garden to keep them away and to stop them from breeding. You can also grow a pepper plant in your balcony. Make a powerful all-natural hot pepper fly repellent spray by following this:
Use 2 or 3 hot peppers depending on the concentration you want and blend them finely in a food processor.
Add 3 - 4 cups of water and continue blending them to get a uniform mix.
Seal this mix in an airtight container and place it in the sunlight for about a week.
Strain the liquid and transfer it to a spray bottle.
2. Basil
Basil, a culinary herb, is especially used in Italian cuisines. Its aroma can repulse flies. Fruit flies and house flies simply cannot stand it. To get rid of flies in your home, grow the basil plant in your garden or in your balcony similar to the hot pepper plant or along with it if you wish. You can also make an insect repellent spray with basil leaves. Here’s how -
Pick a few basil leaves and squeeze them a little to form cuts in the leaves.
Steep these leaves in hot water for about 30 minutes.
Strain the leaves and use the liquid as a spray.
3. Ginger Spray
Ginger spray is an all-natural and powerful fly repellent that’s easy to make and works like a charm. Similar to hot pepper and basil leaves, the strong odour of ginger repels flies and keeps them away from your house. A mixture of ginger and water is also an effective insect repellent that is used in farms. The strong, repulsive odour of ginger keeps most flies at bay. To make ginger fly repellent follow these steps:
Add 2 spoons of finely dried ginger powder to a bowl containing 4 cups of normal water.
Stir the mixture well so the ginger essence mixes well with the water.
Strain the mix and transfer the liquid into a spray bottle.
Spray the repellent wherever the flies tend to accumulate.
4. Essential Oils
Many essential oils have strong odours that chase flies away. Making a spray out of a mixture of these oils is a wonderful way to keep the flies away from your house. To prepare this spray, you would need some oils with strong odours such as clove oil, thyme oil, peppermint oil, lemongrass oil, and cinnamon oil. The procedure is as follows:
Add 10 drops of each essential oil to the spray bottle.
Pour 2 cups of water and 2 cups of non-flavoured vodka.
Blend the ingredients together by shaking vigorously.
5. Apple Cider Vinegar and Eucalyptus Oil
This insect repellent concoction is especially effective against house flies. You will need ¼ cup of witch hazel, ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar and about 60 drops of eucalyptus oil. Follow the following procedure:
Add the witch hazel and the apple cider vinegar to the spray bottle and shake well.
Now add the eucalyptus oil to the mixture and shake well to prepare the repellent spray.
This concoction can also be applied on the skin to repel house flies.
Use Traps to Get Rid of Flies
If the organic sprays aren’t able to keep them at bay, it’s time to take it up a notch. Fly traps are effective in trapping and killing flies that have already entered your home.
1. Vinegar Fly Trap
An effective way to get rid of fruit flies in the house is to use the vinegar trap. Fruit flies are primarily attracted to rotten or fermented fruits. Therefore, fermented fruit products such as apple cider vinegar and wine are an excellent bait to lure in the flies. A simple trap can be made with fermented liquids to take out fruit flies in the house.
Pour some apple cider vinegar into a glass and cover it with a clear plastic sheet. Use rubber bands to tightly secure the sheet to the glass. Using a needle create a hole big enough for fruit flies to crawl into the glass. These holes will let the flies smell the vinegar in the glass. Once they crawl in, they won’t be able to fly out of the holes. They’ll eventually drown.
Pour some vinegar into an open bowl and add a few drops of dish soap to it. The soap reduces the surface tension of vinegar and when the flies try to land on the mixture, they sink and drown.
2. Commercial Light Traps
Light traps work by attracting flies and swatting them with a jolt of electricity. Commercially available light traps are quite efficient in attracting all kinds of flies that wander into your living space such as house flies, wasps, mosquitoes, tiny moths, etc. They lure insects using an ultraviolet lamp. The ideal way to go about setting up your light trap is as follows:
Position your light trap about 4 to 6 feet over the floor.
Choose a place such that the light trap isn’t visible to the outside through a window or door so it won’t attract any flies from there.
Use light traps designed for homes as the larger high voltage traps can create a bit of a mess.
3. The Flypaper Trap
One of the simplest home remedies for flies in the kitchen is flypaper. Commercially available fly papers are ribbons with sticky, sweet-smelling glue coated on its both sides. The smell attracts flies and traps them in the glue when they land on the paper. Sometimes these sticky coating also contains an insecticide to kill the flies. If you wish to make your own flypaper trap, you will need strips of brown paper and some corn syrup. Follow these instructions:
To make the flypaper trap, cut 2-inch wide strips out of a brown paper.
Pour equal parts of corn syrup and water into a saucepan and heat the mixture till it boils. Keep it stirring continuously.
Allow the mixture to cool down a bit and soak the strips in the mix for 4-5 hours to let them absorb it well. Let it dry for 2-3 hours.
Hang the fly strips in your kitchen or any other area of your house where you see flies in huge numbers.
4. Electronic Swatter
Portable electronic insect swatters are an excellent tool to quickly get rid of the flies from your house. Electronic swatters are like badminton rackets that have three layers of electrified mesh. An ON/OFF button controls the charging of capacitors inside that built a high voltage. To use this, pick up the swatter and gently sweep it in the air. Flies fly right in between the mesh and are struck by a high voltage spark which kills them instantly. A word of caution: Try not to touch the mesh with your bare hands while the swatter is working. It can give you a sharp jolt.
5. The Honey Trap
A honey-water fly trap works well to trap small fruit flies and is simple to make. The principle is the same; honey water is sweet smelling, and the aroma lures fly into the trap. For this, you’ll need a tall glass or a jar and some tissue paper.
Roll the tissue paper up into a cone that snugly fits the glass and sits a little over the honey-water mixture in it.
Snip the end of the cone a little to make a small entrance to let the flies enter but not big enough to allow them to escape as well.
As the flies get attracted to the honey and water mix, they will fly into the cone and get trapped in the glass with no way out.
How to Clean Your House to Keep the Flies Away
To keep your house free of flies, it’s essential to ensure they don’t get attracted to your house in the first place. Here are some tips to keep your house free of flies.
1. Clean Food Spills Immediately
Flies are attracted to food, fruits, and anything that seems appealing in your space. They are most attracted to moist or rotten foods. Therefore whenever you spill food, clean it up immediately.
Store all the moist food in an airtight container and snacks or pet food go into Ziploc bags.
Wash dishes soon after use to avoid them sitting in the sink for too long.
2. Keep the Garbage Disposal Area Clean
The garbage bin is the hot spot for flies in your house. Dispose the waste or compost in sealed bags and empty the garbage bin frequently. Your waste disposal area should be well lit, preferably by sunlight, so it doesn’t get damp and encourage the growth of microbes.
3. Clean Up After Your Pets
If you have a pet cat or dog at home, their litterbox could become a breeding ground for all kinds of flies if you don’t pick up after them soon. Flies prefer to lay eggs on poop and can release dozens of eggs at a time. They can hatch in as little as 24 hours and lead to an infestation. So clean up after your pets.
4. Clear the Drain
Your drains are a magnet for flies as they are filled with rotten organic material. The outlets in your kitchen and bathrooms should be cleaned once a week with disinfectant drain cleaners to kill any pests breeding inside.
5. Block Their Entry Points
Although flies can enter inside every time you open the door, they often come through openings in the window, vents of insect screens that you’re unaware of. Frequently check for these entry points and fix them.
Keeping your house free from flies is a never ending process. Flies are always waiting for a chance to fly into our homes and breed. Your first line of defence should be prevention. Keep your house and surroundings clean at all times so that the flies don't come anywhere near your house, and if they do, then try the above-mentioned remedies to get rid of them.

Baby Born at 34 Weeks of Pregnancy
Normally, babies are born after 38 weeks of gestation. However, in some cases, babies are born prematurely, at 34 weeks. Called as preemies, these infants need special care, both at the hospital and home. Before we dive into the topic, let's find out the causes for the delivery that happens at 34 weeks.
What Causes Childbirth At 34 Weeks?
Premature delivery may take place due to:
Genital tract infections and bacterial secretions that weaken the membranes surrounding the amniotic sac, causing it to rupture early
Placental problems such as placenta previa, placental abruption or placenta accrete
The presence of multiples or excessive amniotic fluid
Abnormalities in the structure of the uterus or cervix such as cervical insufficiency
Abdominal surgery during pregnancy to remove ovarian cysts, appendix or gallbladder
Complications That Babies Born at 34 Weeks Face
Here are some common complications that babies born at 34 weeks have to face:
1. Jaundice
Preemies tend to contract jaundice as they lack a fully functional metabolic system. A by-product of the blood, bilirubin, accumulates in the body, leading to a yellowing of the skin and eyes.
2. Anaemia
Anaemia is caused by a deficiency of red blood cells. These cells are responsible for carrying oxygen to different parts of the body. In a premature baby, there isn’t enough blood pool to develop completely and hence the body is weak.
3. Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS)
An under-developed respiratory system in premature babies causes breathing difficulties. They are also sensitive to environmental conditions and any change can trigger severe distress with the worst possible outcomes such as respiratory failure.
4. Apnea
Apnea is a disorder in which the body of an infant makes no effort of breathing; it is likely caused by the underdeveloped respiratory system. Babies suffer from it until their body matures and it is treated with medication and close monitoring.
5. Infections
Preemies are also highly susceptible to infections due to their weak immune system.
6. Patent Ductus Arteriosus
This is an artery which joins the mother to the baby. It may not close properly after preterm birth and lead to serious complications.
7. Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD)
if your baby develops this health condition, she may require a ventilator to breathe.
8. Low Blood Pressure
Preterm babies don't have a well-developed blood pool and network of blood vessels. Therefore maintenance of blood pressure is often difficult. It results in lowered blood pressure immediately after birth.
9. Necrotizing Enterocolitis
It is a devastating condition where the premature infant’s intestinal walls are invaded by bacteria. The infection caused in the underdeveloped wall can lead to its destruction and perforation resulting in the spillage of stool into the abdominal cavity.
How To Take Care of a Preemie Born At 34 Weeks
A premature baby born at 34 weeks needs special care and attention at different stages. Here are some ways you can take care of your little one after birth:
1. At the NICU
Babies born at 8 months are shifted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and closely monitored for a few weeks. Babies are kept in incubators with transparent domes that allow just the right amount of light. They also have tubes for feeding and breathing. The atmosphere inside the NICU is carefully controlled with the right mixture of temperature, humidity and partial pressures of gas which is ideal for the growth and recovery of the baby.
2. Feeding
Premature babies cannot be breastfed as their suckling response remains under-developed at birth. They are fed through a tube that goes to the baby’s stomach via the mouth. You may be required to use a breast pump to extract the milk and then feed it to your baby. You may be allowed to breastfeed after she recovers and is discharged from the NICU.
3. Bonding
Bonding between the mother and the child is important. However, this can be hindered by the baby's being placed in an incubator. However, it’s only a matter of time before your baby will be discharged and be able to register your voice and touch.
What Is the Survival Rate of Babies Born At 34 Weeks?
The good news is that the survival rate for moderately preterm babies is over 98% (16.2 deaths per 1000 live births). Therefore, unless there are multiple complications, most babies survive.
How Long Will Your Baby Need to Stay in the NICU?
All preterm babies are required to meet certain milestones before they can be discharged from the NICU. If your infant was born at 34 weeks, she may need to stay in the NICU until she turns 36 weeks. She should be able to breathe, eat, and regulate her body temperature. However, after a few weeks in the NICU, most babies recover after being born preterm at 8 months.

Top 10 Home Remedies for Baby Eye Infection
The chances of a person having an eye infection are equal for adults and babies. Newborns may get an eye infection during delivery itself, due to the bacteria present in the birth canal. The eyes begin to swell, there will be itchiness, and your baby will be upset and irritated because of all these uncomfortable symptoms.
Symptoms of an Eye Infection
Newborns are equally susceptible to eye infections as adults. Typically, eye infections may be of bacterial or viral nature. Here are some of the symptoms to look out for.
1. Redness
Redness in the white part of the eye or inside the eyelids indicate your little one may be suffering from a viral eye infection.
2. Discharge
Any yellow discharge from the eye means the eye infection is bacterial. Make sure to the cleanse the area and wipe away any discharge.
3. Puffiness
Puffy eyelids indicate the baby most likely has a viral eye infection.
4. Matted Eyelids
If your baby has matted eyelids, or you notice the eyelids stuck together, the eye infection is bacterial in nature. Gently get rid of the buildup to ease discomfort.
5. Watery Eyes
Watery eyes indicate a viral infection in your little one. This can also lead to itchiness and dryness. Wash the eyes and keep the area clean.
Why Are Home Remedies Preferred for Eye Infections in Infants?
When infants suffer from an eye infection, their threshold to bear painful symptoms is quite low and can cause them to get extremely upset and start crying. Though there may be eye drops that you use for yourself, they may not necessarily be the right choice for your baby. You could take your baby to the doctor for an eye checkup and then get a recommendation, but until then, your baby will most likely be unable to bear the discomfort.
Home remedies are based on natural alternatives and rarely harmful to the baby. Even if they don’t end up treating the infection, they can provide some relief, which can calm the toddler and let you easily take him to the doctor for further examination.
Best 10 Home Remedies for Eye Infection in Babies
Here are some common remedies for eye infection in babies.
1. Chamomile Oil
Chamomile oil has many health benefits. There are various anti-inflammatory constituents inherent in the oil, making it a great option to treat eye infections. It’s best to take a couple of cups of water and boil it along with a few drops of the oil. Later, this can be strained and the solution can be used to dip cotton balls in it. These cotton balls, when placed over the eye of the baby, bring quite some relief and is potent in treating the infection.
2. Saltwater
Sea salt plays an important role in this regard. The salt, in itself, is a good cleansing agent and contains various constituents that make it a great antibiotic. Adding one spoon of salt to a couple of cups of water, and warming them together, forms a solution that is great to treat an eye infection. The baby’s eyes can be washed using this solution, since it will remove any discharge or solidified crusts in the eye. On the other hand, cotton swabs dipped in the water can be placed on the baby’s eye to reduce infection.
3. Breast Milk
This might sound unusual at first, but breast milk is, in fact, a good way to treat an eye infection. Mother’s milk already contains a lot of vitamins and nutrients, as well as tons of antibodies that help strengthen the baby’s immune system. Since these actively fight off infection, using a dropper to add a couple of drops of breast milk in the baby’s eye reduces any infection it might have. Breast milk is known to combat conjunctivitis as well.
4. Eyebright Plant
This plant genus is well-known in treating various infections, including an eye infection. The plant contains a lot of cleansing properties that reduce the itching in the eye. Combined with anti-allergic constituents, it actively helps in reducing swollen eyes, too. A little eyebright in 2 cups of water when boiled, is a solution that can be used to put cotton balls in. Make sure to squeeze out the water and then place the balls on the baby’s eyes.
5. Hot and Cold Water
The quickest way to bring relief from an eye infection is by making use of water. Washing the eyes with some cool water brings instant relief and can flush out any tiny particles that might be inside it. Combine that with cotton swabs soaked in warm water, and the temperature change can help combat the infection, as well as take care of any discharge. There is a substantial reduction in swelling and pain, due to this.
6. Tea Bag
Tea is known to have many anti-microbial and antioxidant properties that benefit the body when consumed. These can also be applicable for treating an eye infection. Dipping the tea bag in warm water, and then letting it cool activates the constituents of the tea. This tea bag can then be placed on each eye, alternately, soothing it from the pain of the infection.
7. Jasmine Flower
This is one of the most popular natural coolants that is a part of various natural beauty remedies as well. Jasmine water is known to soothe the skin, and can be used to soothe the eye as well. By letting the jasmine flowers sit in distilled water overnight, the water can then be put in the eye using a dropper. The soothing sensation brings quick relief from the inflammation due to the infection.
8. Antibiotics
Certain eye infections can be caused by strong bacteria and the usual home remedies may not be effective against them. In such cases, the best option is to make use of antibiotics to combat the infectious bacteria directly. Your doctor might recommend baby safe ointments or drops. Any yellow coloured secretion that might occur near the eye should be removed using cotton swabs soaked in salt water.
9. Massage
Sometimes, the eye gets irritated when the tear duct does not have a clear passage or has some blockage in its way. In these cases, it is good to warm your fingers and softly massage the area between the eye and the nasal bridge. The warmth of the fingers helps dislodge anything stuck in the path, clearing up the tear duct.
10. Infection at Birth
Many times, doctors, themselves, administer eye drops to a child to protect them from any infection that they might be susceptible to right after birth. These drops can be quite sensitive to the newborn’s eyes and cause extreme irritation. In such cases, there is no action one can take or needs to take and the irritation goes away in its own time.
The eyes of a baby are extremely sensitive and an infection or irritation causes the baby to become upset right away. By aiming to soothe the pain and bring relief to the infant, you can then check what the cause of the infection is and make use of the right remedies or your doctor’s consultation, accordingly.

Is it Safe to Eat Pani Puri during Pregnancy
If you are pregnant, then the craving for food is very normal. Most women usually crave for tangy and spicy street food such as gol gappe, pani puri, tikki, and chaat. However, in pregnancy, you are more susceptible to infections because of your compromised immune system. The low immunity makes you more prone to falling sick; thus, you not only have to take care of yourself, but you also need to take care of the tiny life growing inside you. Here, in this article, we shall discuss whether eating street food is safe during pregnancy and provide some tips on eating street food while pregnant.
Can You Eat Pani Puri or Chaat When Pregnant?
Though there are no restrictions regarding eating street food during pregnancy, your body is more vulnerable and is more likely to catch infections and ailments. Once you fall sick or catch an infection, then you will have to take medicines, which may not be good for your unborn baby. Apart from this, your body is undergoing so many changes, and eating street food may cause more bouts of acidity and heartburns.
Therefore, you may eat pani puri or chaat in early pregnancy, but you have to take care of how it is made and where you are eating.
10 Best Tips to ensure Pani Puri/Chaat/Street Food in Pregnancy Is Safe for You
The best way to curb your pregnancy cravings is by eating healthy home-cooked food. However, if you lack culinary skills, or you crave for only street food, the following tips may come in handy:
It is advisable that you choose a clean and hygienic eating place. You may either search for such eating joints or ask your friends and family for recommendations. Well-reputed eating places usually do not compromise on hygiene and quality of the food.
It is a good idea to initially try a moderate or small amount of street food if you are eating for the first time from a particular place. If you feel fine after eating, then you may try eating later from the same place.
Usually, water is the culprit when it comes to falling sick after eating from street vendors. Therefore, it is advisable to carry your own water bottle with you whenever you step out of the house. Alternatively, you may opt for packaged drinking water at such eating joints.
Try and avoid uncooked or raw food items as they are the breeding grounds for various viruses and bacteria, and can make you sick within no time. Therefore, no cut fruits, vegetables, or uncooked food from the street. Always opt for cooked food options.
Similarly, it is a bad idea to eat raw or uncooked egg preparations from a street vendor. You should avoid eating sandwiches or burgers with uncooked or raw vegetables and egg preparations. There is a risk of salmonella contamination, which may cause severe diarrhoea and vomiting.
Opting for flavoured milkshakes or cold coffees from street vendors is also a complete no-no. As neither the freshness of fruit or milk can be established. The ice used to make shakes may not be made with filtered water. Some vendors use artificial flavours to make milkshakes, which may not be safe for you and your unborn baby.
It is also recommended not to opt for cottage cheese or paneer preparations from the street vendors. Raw paneer is the breeding ground for bacteria, and the freshness of the same is difficult to establish.
It is good to opt for cooked food such as aloo tikki or chole bhature as these pose a lesser risk to your health in comparison to raw or uncooked food. However, if you face regular bouts of acidity or heartburn, then it will be a good idea to stay away from such food items.
9. It is suggested not to eat various chutneys offered by the street vendors such as pudina, chilli or imli. The better option is to opt for packed tomato ketchup or sauce. The raw ingredients in the chutneys can also cause vomiting and diarrhoea.
10. Most women crave for pani puri in pregnancy. However, it is recommended to be extra careful if you plan to eat them during the monsoon season because the risk of water contamination becomes much higher.
11. Though most women may crave for tangy and spicy food, some women also crave for sweet delicacies such as sugar cane juice. The machine used to extract sugarcane juice is an ideal place for germs to breed. Therefore, it is not advisable to drink sugarcane juice.
12. Women who develop a sweet tooth in pregnancy love to eat ice-creams and kulfis. However, if you plan to eat these delicacies in pregnancy from a street vendor, then it is important that you choose from a well-renowned brand of ice-cream and kulfis.
13. Avoid eating fruit chaat from a street vendor. You may cut fruits at home and sprinkle some chaat masala and squeeze lemon juice to enjoy fresh food salad.
Safe Chaat Recipes for Pregnant Women
Here are some chaat recipes which are absolutely safe and healthy for you to have during pregnancy. We recommend you make these recipes at home to ensure complete hygiene.
