Keeping Baby Warm in Winter at Night
Unlike adults, babies (especially under 2 years of age) are not capable of regulating their body temperature. At the onset of winters, you’d notice how the baby’s hands and legs go cold and would want to do something immediately to keep them warm. It is quite important to cover them comfortably while sleeping at night to maintain a body temperature that is just right for them. But, some studies have shown that extra layers of clothing increase the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
Although keeping the baby warm in winter while sleeping is vital, there are certain key factors to be kept in mind so as to minimise the risk of SIDS. Let’s take a look at what you could do to keep your baby warm.
What You Can Do to Keep Your Baby Warm at Night
As mentioned earlier, babies cannot regulate their body temperature. Parents need to maintain it by dressing the baby up in warm clothing and adjusting the room temperature. Here’s how you can keep your baby warm at night so that he/she can sleep comfortably.
The ideal range for your baby’s room temperature should be between 20-20 degrees Celcius.
The best way to keep your baby warm while sleeping in winter is to dress him in a footed sleepsuit to keep his legs and toes warm too. If your baby’s room is at the colder end of the scale, put a vest underneath the sleepsuit.
Use a good moisturiser that is rich in butter and milk cream to avoid dryness and itching that could occur due to the extra clothing and cold weather.
Keep your windows shut if it is extremely cold outside, but make sure that your baby’s room stays ventilated too. You can use a room heater or humidifier as and when needed to keep the space, and your baby, warm and comfortable at night.
If you think that one-piece suits are not enough for your infant, swaddle him in a soft blanket for a comfortable and restful sleep at nights. In case he kicks off the blanket, you can put him in a sleeping bag.
In addition, carriers are a great way to use your body heat to add extra cosiness to the baby in the cold winters.
A fitted cotton sheet and a soft, comfy blanket can keep the baby warm in bed. In addition, some extra layers of the blanket can be added or removed depending upon the room temperature. Alternatively, a baby sleeping bag or sleep-sack are the best options to keep a squirmy baby warm and cosy at night.
Placing a hot water bag or heating pad in the bed for some time before letting the baby sleep will add some warmth to the cold sheets. It also keeps the baby’s crib warm and comfortable to sleep in.
If your baby is not a big fan of blankets, keep his hands and legs warm with mittens and socks.
Safety Tip
Don’t cover your baby’s head while sleeping in bed or anywhere indoors. This may cause overheating because an excessive amount of heat is produced through the baby’s head. Once your baby falls asleep, check if he is sweaty, flushed or breathing rapidly. Lower down the temperature of his room or just remove his swaddle or cap.
Dressing the Baby for Outdoors During Winter
While heading out in the crisp, cold weather with your little one, just adopt the rule of thumb that babies need an extra layer of clothing than you do. From cosy clothes and coats to heaters and humidifiers, there are a lot of things to consider before leaving the house with your baby. Here are some tips and tricks you need to know to keep your baby warm outdoors.
What You Can Do to Keep Your Baby Warm Outdoors
Always dress your baby with thin bottom layers of clothing to trap the heat in between. Start with a soft cotton onesie, add a long-sleeved t-shirt and leggings. And, if it is extremely cold outside, you can layer him up with a snowsuit.
Dress your baby in soft and breathable layers of fabric.
A hat is one important accessory for your little one that can help protect his ear from the bitter winter winds.
A baby’s hand is a good indication to know his body temperature. So, keep your baby’s hands warm by putting mittens (for a newborn) or tucking them inside the blanket (for toddlers).
Newborns, especially preemies, can be given Kangaroo care while travelling outside. It is a therapy where the baby is placed directly on his parents’ skin, which is enough to keep him warm and cosy when
Safety Tips
Always make sure that your baby is dry from the inside because a little moisture due to damp clothing can cause hypothermia, even if it is over 40 degrees F outside.
To keep your baby warm during winters, a car seat is a big matter of concern because bulky fabrics like coats cause hindrance in providing a snug fit on the straps.
Keeping Babies Warm and Safe While Staying Out in Cold for Long
Staying out with your baby in the cold for long hours may be a bit scary for new mommies, but a few safety precautions can limit its vulnerable effects. So, to keep your baby safe and comfortable when it’s breezy cold outside, follow these simple tips.
What You Can Do to Keep Your Baby Warm For Long Hours When Outdoor
Dress your tiny one in such a way that you can adjust the layers of clothes according to his needs. The bottom layers should be snug like cotton t-shirts and pants, followed by a jacket, hat and mittens. For additional warmth, you can carry blankets or muslin cloths.
Wear your baby in a carrier to add some extra cosiness in the cold weather.
You have to be very careful while carrying the baby in a stroller because the abundance of a blanket covering can compromise the airflow to your baby inside the stroller. Otherwise, you can put a jacket, cap, mittens and booties to keep your baby warm and try to walk in the direction of the wind so that the baby is not hit by the chilly wind directly.
Safety Tip
There is no need to put an extra sweater on your baby when a baby carrier is used.
Keeping Baby's Skin from Getting Too Dry
The cold weather, lack of humidity and recirculated air can all lead to dry and itchy skin. A few precautions can help you to keep your baby’s skin clean and moisturised.
What You Can Do to Keep Your Baby’s Skin from Getting Too Dry During Winter
Did you know that water can also dry out your baby’s skin? Yes, they don’t need to be washed daily, especially in the winters. Use lukewarm water (not too hot) and don’t let him soak in the bathtub for long.
Studies have shown that soaps can be allergenic to some babies. So, try to use mild, hypoallergenic cleansers that are free of dyes and fragrances.
Moisturise your baby’s skin after every bath with gentle, hypoallergenic baby lotion.
Before stepping out of the house, apply some unscented emollient on your baby’s face and lips to protect him from harsh winds.
Safety Tip
Always pat him dry after the bath with a soft cotton towel. Too much rubbing with the towel can chap your baby’s delicate skin.
What Should Parents Avoid Doing When Keeping Their Babies Warm in Cold Weather
Babies, especially newborns, are more susceptible to cold, and they can't even tell you when they are feeling cold or hot. It is actually your job to make sure that the baby stays warm and comfortable. Below are some precautionary things to be kept in mind when keeping your babies warm during winter:
Don’t overcompensate the baby’s surroundings by keeping the room temperature too high or putting him in too many layers, because overheating increases the risk of SIDS.
Excessive wrapping up of your baby may hinder the breathing process. Avoid using long scarves around the baby’s neck or face; instead, shield him from the breezy winds with the help of a stroller or car seat canopy.
Avoid layering up your baby with heavy blankets because he will not be able to shift the blanket on his own, which may lead to suffocation.
Don’t cover the baby’s face, or shield him from getting exposed to direct sunlight, especially if he is less than a year because it can obstruct his breathing.
Avoid keeping your baby covered in layers for too long when not required! If the temperature drops down beyond freezing and you get back inside some cosy place, make sure that you start removing extra layers from him as required.
Don’t let your baby wear fluffy winter jackets while being in the car seat, because that can compress and leave too much space in between the baby and harness for an easy movement in case of an accident.
If signs of frostbite are triggered in any case, don’t rub the frozen areas instead apply a warm washcloth to his nose, lips or ears. Remove the wet clothing after a few minutes and cover your baby with a warm blanket.
Ensure that your baby’s room meets all safety standards. Be very careful while using space heaters as they can cause fire burns and carbon monoxide poisoning.
Avoid using mattresses made of soft and lightweight materials, as it not only puts your baby at risk of smothering hazard but can also increase the chance of getting sick due to the cold air trapped in the mattress.
Use of hot water bottle or electric blanket is a big no for babies under 2 years of age, because unlike adults, they cannot regulate their body temperature.
While keeping a baby warm in chilly winters is one of the most challenging tasks, a little knowledge can help you and your baby to maintain consistent body temperature in wintertime, especially during nights. Don’t stress yourself over the cold, just make sure that you have dressed the baby enough to keep him warm and that he is not exposed to cold for more than half a minute at a time. However, believe your guts and follow above-mentioned tips and tricks to tackle up the crackling winters and keep our baby warm during the season.

Important Precautions to Take During the First Trimester of Pregnancy
Pregnancy is an exciting phase of a woman’s life, especially if it is her first pregnancy. If you are pregnant, the thought of nurturing a life can overwhelm you. But pregnancy can also turn you into a worrywart, especially when you start thinking about everything you put in your mouth and wonder whether or not it’s safe for your baby. A little ignorance on your part such as drinking alcohol or indulging in unhealthy lifestyle habits can lead to massive repercussions. And you’d want to avoid them at all cost.
The first trimester of pregnancy is an important phase. This is the time when the foetus develops rapidly and is at its most vulnerable, which is why care must be taken to ensure its proper growth and development. Here are a few precautions that a pregnant woman must take in the early stages of her pregnancy to avoid miscarriage and lower the chances of birth defects in the first trimester.
Precautions to Take During the First Three Months of Pregnancy
Here are some things you need to keep in mind and follow in the first three months of pregnancy. Trust us, these precautions will help you have a healthy pregnancy.
1. Avoid Smoking
If you are pregnant and smoke, it’s time to quit. Smoking during pregnancy can increase the chances of miscarriage, premature labour, and ectopic pregnancy. The smoke inhaled can hamper the development of the foetus and ruin your chances of a healthy delivery. So say 'no' to cigars and embrace tobacco-free living if you want a healthy pregnancy.
2. Say ‘No’ to Alcohol
There is no study to prove that a specific quantity of alcohol is safe during pregnancy, hence it is best avoided. Alcohol is linked to learning disorders and can interfere with the brain development of the foetus. Furthermore, drinking alcohol in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy can also cause miscarriage, so it is best not included in the first trimester of pregnancy diet and perhaps, even later. So steer clear of alcohol while pregnant and have a healthy pregnancy.
3. Limit Your Caffeine Intake
If you are a coffee person, the thought of giving it up completely can make you sick, but here’s a piece of good news for you: you don’t have to give it up cold turkey or at all - you can still enjoy a cup of coffee while pregnant, but make sure that you stick to just 1 cup. Taking too much caffeine can also lead to premature births and may cause birth defects. Stick to 1 cup, i.e.,less than 200 mg of caffeine a day, and you and your baby should be fine. The best option would be consulting a doctor regarding the amount of caffeine that safe for consumption during pregnancy and playing it safe!
4. Avoid Sauna and Hot Baths
High temperatures are not good for foetal development. So avoid taking hot showers at all costs. If you have back pain and joint pain, consider using heating pads wrapped in a towel. But do remember that the temperature of the heating pad should not exceed 100°F or 37°C.
5. Take Herbal Supplements and Painkillers With Caution
Painkillers and herbal supplements must be taken with caution. Your doctor will prescribe you certain medicines, and if you’re taking supplements or are on medication, you must consult her since these may interact with your existing medicines. Furthermore, overuse of painkillers can be harmful for the health of the foetus as certain chemicals may pass through the placenta into the bloodstream.
6. Avoid Seafood
Although seafood is a healthy source of protein and fats, some fish such as shark, swordfish, and marlin have been known to contain toxic substances and high levels of mercury. Eating these fish during pregnancy can be harmful for the health of the baby. Hence, it is suggested that you avoid seafood during the first trimester of your pregnancy or better yet throughout your pregnancy. However, if you still wish to incorporate fish in your diet, consult a doctor.
7. Stop Eating Unhealthy Foods
If you are already within the healthy weight range, you will probably need to up your calorie intake by at least 300 during the first trimester of your pregnancy and be expected to pack on 1 pound (0.4 kg) a week during each week of your first trimester. However, make sure you have a balanced diet and avoid unhealthy foods.
8. Avoid Processed Foods
Processed foods contain food additives and substances that are harmful to the development of the foetus. Food additives contain sodium nitrate traces and cancer-causing substances which can be harmful to your health as well as your baby’s health. Additionally, pesticides may creep in with such foods, which is why we recommend that you stick to organic sources of foods and avoid processed or packaged food items. And make sure to wash your fruits and vegetables and peel them before eating them.
9. Take Folic Acid Supplements
Your doctor must have prescribed you folic acid supplements - take them regularly. Add nuts to your food groups and increase your intake of Omega-3s as your baby will need these for the proper development of eyes, brains, and nerves. Vitamin D intake is also important. You can get this from egg yolks, fortified milk, and by exposing yourself to sunlight every morning.
Some More Tips to Take Care of Yourself During the First Trimester of Your Pregnancy
Here’s what you can do to ensure a healthy transition into the second and third trimesters and to ensure that you have no complications during delivery:
Load Up on Veggies – Veggies are always healthy, and more so during pregnancy. So while pregnant, increase your intake of vegetables and delicious organic goodies, and make way for a healthy pregnancy.
Exercise – Practising yoga and light exercises will keep you healthy during pregnancy. You can start practising yoga and pranayama just to be safe since certain exercises can lead to preterm labour in expecting women. You can also take up some light exercises - these will keep you active and your metabolism working. However, do consult your doctor or healthcare provider before you decide to take up any exercises. And avoid strenuous exercises at all cost!
Take Prenatal Vitamins – Follow up with your doctor regarding the intake of prenatal vitamins. Take the vitamins prescribed by your doctor regularly as they will provide you with necessary nutrients required during the first trimester and also help your baby grow.
Talk to Your Doctor If You Are Not Well – If you experience pain or do not feel good after taking certain medications, foods, or supplements, consult with your healthcare provider and stop taking those immediately until you find out what’s wrong and how it’s affecting your well-being. You may be allergic to certain foods or medications, or maybe those medicines might be interacting with your existing medical conditions, so check with your doctor at the earliest.
Watch Your Weight – A woman should lead an active lifestyle and have a healthy BMI if she is planning to get pregnant. Obesity poses a risk towards a healthy pregnancy. If you are already pregnant, you can take up light exercises and eat healthily to have a healthy pregnancy. If you gain too much weight during the first trimester and upcoming weeks, you may have complications in pregnancy. So watch your calorie intake; eat calorie-dense foods in less proportion, and consult with your dietitian or nutritionist if needed.
Try Natural Remedies – Avoid taking painkillers if the pain is not severe. Try relaxation exercises, meditation, mindfulness, and breathing techniques to feel better. Ask your partner to give you a massage, and sleep in an inclined position, if needed, to relieve back pain, if you have it. Whatever the case, try natural ways or remedies of pain relief rather than taking drugs or artificial substances.
During pregnancy, taking the necessary precautions can increase your chances of having a healthy and normal delivery. So eat healthily, avoid stress, be happy, and take care of yourself and your baby.

1. Tops
Keeping it simple always works. You could go for a simple jersey top, chiffon shirt, turtleneck, or patterned blouse. A blazer can also be layered for a smarter look.

5. Accessories

What You Can Pick for a Formal Business Meeting?
Dressing to impress is the motto behind all formal business attire. What you wear on a daily basis is not perfect for your boardroom or conference. A good attire conveys your professional image and executive presence. So, here we suggest you what you can wear for a formal business meeting.
For Women
Well-worn business formal women’s attire makes a statement. Here’s what you need to keep in mind:
1. Tops
A cotton or chiffon buttoned shirt is perfect for a formal meeting. You must not wear clothes that reveal too much skin. Your blouse should be a perfect fit and should go well the rest of your outfit.
2. Bottoms
Pants work fine as long as you adhere to tailored ones with a crease. Khaki, corduroy, twill, wool and wool blends are all good materials. Avoid heavy cotton, denim, and synthetic materials.
3. A Dress/Skirt
If you are wearing a dress or skirt, make sure you pick the right colour and material. The length of your dress and skirt also matters. Follow the four finger rule; the skirt or the dress should not be higher than four fingers above your knee. If you’re unable to walk comfortably in the skirt, it’s either too tight or too small. So avoid wearing such dresses at work.
4. Shoes
Closed toed pumps, brogues, court shoes or loafers that compliment the outfit are the best. Avoid chunky heels, stilettos, flat soled-shoes, or shoes with too much weight.
5. Accessories
Wear jewellery that’s simple and non-distracting which pairs well with a structured bag. When wearing a skirt or dress, wear skin-coloured or black tights for a perfect finish.
For Men
For men who are unable to decide what to wear for a formal business meeting, we will help you pick the right clothes.
1. Shirts
A buttoned-up, plain cotton shirt is the best option for a formal business meeting. You can also wear shirts that are light coloured and have small patterns on it.
2. Suits
A two or a three-piece suit in a dark colour such as charcoal or navy is the perfect choice of attire for a board meeting. However, make sure that the quality of the material is excellent and that it fits you perfectly.
3. Shoes
Oxford shoes or brogues in black or brown go well with suits. Do not forget the matching socks.
4. Accessories
To complete the look, a silk tie is mandatory along with a leather belt. You can also wear a watch and subtle cufflinks.
Additional Tips You Must Follow
Whether you’re a man or a woman working at a startup or a multinational corporation, the following tips apply to all.
1. Bring Backups
Having a blazer and an extra pair of shoes in your car is a quick fix if you arrive at a meeting and realise you’re underdressed. The same goes for accessories and other outerwear.
2. Ensure That Your Attire is Appropriate
Be it men’s or women's business wear; everybody agrees that attention to detail makes people look competent. Although t-shirts and jeans are okay in some casual settings, maintaining a professional touch works greatly to maintain your image.
3. Ensure Everything Fits Well
An oversized or undersized shirt or pant can ruin your outfit. What’s worse, while you’re tugging at it, you draw more attention to it. The people in the board meeting may assume that you lack confidence. You don't want that, right? So make sure your clothes fit you.
4. Invest in Good Ties
Ties are essential for men to complete their formal, professional look. Pick a good quality tie made out of a high-quality fabric such as silk. Ensure it has no character prints and the patterns or colours are subdued.
5. Avoid Mismatches
None of your accessories should be a mismatch with your whole look. While picking a belt, go for the one which matches the colour of your shoes or the suit. For a casual business meeting ensure your trousers match the colour of the jacket. The colour of the socks should either match the trousers or shoes.
6. Watch Your Hairstyle
Your hairstyle should complement your look. Men must keep their hair trimmed, and women should take care that it doesn’t fall over their face.
7. Opt for Natural Makeup
Women must keep their makeup natural for meetings - it should not be too much. Perfume should be subtle and not overpowering.
8. Regard Social or Cultural Norms
If the business meeting is with an international client, research a bit on what is appropriate with them. You could update your look a little bit more to find a middle ground. Find out their business dress and wear accordingly.
9. Buy a Good Handbag
Invest in a good corporate handbag for a professional appeal. You don’t want to enter a meeting room clutching all your personal stuff in your hands. A black or brown bag that matches your outfit will do.
Blending style and professionalism into your attire is the key to look confident in any business meeting. Your appearance speaks volumes for you to establish you as a credible, successful person. So pay attention to it.

All about Hospital Bag packing do's and don't's you need to know
Hello Readers,
So when I was in my 3rd trimester I was advises to start preparing for a hospital bag. I watched many videos on YouTube and made my own checklist. Ordered a lot of stuff related to baby and me. I did carry the bag to the hospital while getting admitted. I actually opened my bag on the discharge day to wear my dress. Yes. Because I really did not require all those things that I had packed.
I will tell you what all things I carried:
- Diapers
- wet napkins
- diaper rash cream
- Special baby pillow to avoid flat head
- one blanket
- Two wrappers along with full baby wear including jabla, nappi, cap and mittens in two sets of blue and pink
- maternity pads
- pair of swaddle
- breast pads
- dry sheet
- maternity gowns
- baby nail care kit
- baby napkins
- pair of maternity bra
- disposable panties
This was almost everything one can need. However I realized that a lot of things weare really not needed. Such as:
Diaper rash cream - newborns skin is too sensitive hence not advisable to use this cream in the initial days. I started using it after a week when I got my baby home. I used to use it twice a day and not after every diaper change.
Maternity pads - I had a c section so they used to give me hospital pads which were quite comfortable.
Swaddle - In initial days baby used to frequently urinate and poop. The hospital nanny uses to change it everytime using their clothes which were Clean and safe to use for babies.
Breast pads - I have still not opened the packet adi am not suffering from any milk overflow. For first 6 months you regularly breastfeed the baby hence there is no chance of milk overflow. This will be required only when you step out of work after your maternity leave and gave huge gap between breastfeeding sessions.
Dry sheets- Did not use it as hospital staff used to use their own.
Maternity gown- While in hospital I was given hospital maternity gown and was not allowed to use my own.
Baby nail care kit- did not use while in hospital and also even now. I usually cut my babies grown nail with my teeth while breastfeeding. It serves the purpose.
Disposable panties- Hospital used specialized sanitary pads which did not require panties.
So in a nutshell I carried way too many things than actually needed. I should have ideally checked with hospital first about what all things they provide and then accordingly carried my stuff.
Hence Do not panic while preparing your hospital bag and even if you don't carry one it's ok. Nowadays hospitals do provide all essentials.
I hope this information helps many mommy to be's!!!

Introduce new challenges like board games and riding bikes.
Talk to your child while shopping and cooking. Give him smooth-edged utensils and involve him in activities like stirring, beating the egg etc.
While playing on playgrounds, make sure to buckle your child to the swings. Watch out for the ground surface of the playground and make sure it is made of certified organic mulch.
Keep an eye on your child as he climbs up poles or the monkey bars without scaring him too much.
If your child is encouraging other children to take risks, prohibit him from doing so using a gentle tone.
Finally, don’t fret too much over the mud on your child’s shoes, or his dirty toe nails. Just give him a warm and relaxing bath after his play-time, and listen to him as he recounts his little encounters on the playground. Read more

A. Typically, your bump becomes noticeable during your second trimester. Between 16-20 weeks, your body will start showing your baby's growth. For some women, their bump may not be noticeable until the end of the second trimester and even into the third trimester. The second trimester starts in the fourth month.
