Your 13 Week Old Baby - Development, Milestones & Care
Congratulations! Your baby is 13 weeks old and by now you must have got used to the idea of being a mother. Sleepless night, breastfeeding your baby at random hours of the day and night, and cleaning his poop must have made you realise that being a mother is no easy. Is it now? But we know how much you love your little one. In these three months, you must have bonded with your baby too. Your baby will start learning a lot from you as he grows and you might start seeing shades of you or your spouse, even more, evident than before. Find out how your baby is developing!
Your 13-week-old Baby's Development
Your 13-week-old baby will soon start getting comfortable with you as well as with other faces that he encounters. The sociability aspect of your baby will begin to develop as he realizes how much fun it is to interact with others. The smile on his face will be the most welcoming one you will ever see and resisting giving him a kiss would be almost impossible. Making sounds and carrying on lengthy conversations through his coos and gurgles will become second nature to him. He may also try to turn his head around if he hears a noise. Your baby may also start sleeping through the night as well, so you can catch some sleep at night. However, don't count on it. However, if your baby keeps you awake at night, wait for a few months, sooner or later he will get a restful sleep at night and so will you.

Your 13-week-old Baby's Milestones
By now your baby's most of the senses must have developed at par. It might take some more time, but as a result of the growth spurt that happens around the third month, your baby may have a better vision by this age. Your baby will be able to focus better, begin to understand the perception of depth and see how near or far something is. The hues of various colours will start getting more vivid than before and your baby might prefer certain colours over others. Play some music in a corner and your baby may start turning his head and try to see where the sound is coming from. Use that nice baby lotion with the smell of flowers, and you will see a haze of recognition on your baby’s face when he smells it.
Along with the senses, your baby’s limbs will also begin to improve as time passes. This is the time when your baby will realize that he has fingers which can be controlled individually. Though he might not be able to point at something or grip anything right way, his fingers and palms will keep moving around as he starts exploring them. His hand-eye coordination will be much better than before.
Discovering his own voice will also be an activity that will interest your baby quite a lot. Having long conversations with himself and experimenting with different tones and modulations will keep him engaged for a better part of the day. While playing games, he might make a loud cry when you hide and then laugh satisfactorily when you reveal yourself. Many babies wake up early in the morning and, if their stomach is full, will continue lying around and looking at their feet, while cooing.

Feeding
As pattern and routines begin to set in, your 13-week-old baby may feed easily. Yes, breastfeeding your little one will become a tad easier and comfortable for both of you. His feeding will be more efficient and you would be able to tell when he wants food and when he doesn’t in a much better manner. The cry of hunger and the cry for being held will be recognizable.

Sleeping
As your baby undergoes growth spurts, you might have to feed him at odd hours of the day and night. Breastfed babies tend to require milk at night a little more than babies who are bottle-fed. Nevertheless, most babies do not sleep through the night. The longest they might sleep without a break is for about 6-7 hours at the most.

Routine
Up until now, you must have tried to figure out how the entire process of parenting and feeding and sleeping works. But having spent about 13 weeks with your baby, this can be a good time to start enforcing a routine of sorts for both of you. Some babies inevitably fall into a predictable routine pretty early in life. If your baby hasn't, it is time to start building a routine with him.
As babies grow up, they choose when they want to feed or not. There might be a specific timing that you must feed your baby, but over time, your baby might refuse to feed at times if he is full. As long as his weight is fine, you have nothing to worry. When he enters another phase of rapid growth, his hunger will increase and he might start demanding food a lot more than usual.
If your baby feeds for lengthy intervals between each feed, you can enforce a schedule of say 3-hours to 4-hours between each feed. This allows you to shape your own routine, get some rest, and keep your baby well-fed and rested, too. A lot of change can disturb the baby, hence you should try to enforce a routine for him. When he knows that after 1 feed, the next feed will be after a few hours, he can sleep without being disturbed. Even at night, your baby might not sleep as long as you do, or you need to. In these cases, it is important to ensure that your baby does not sleep off at other times. Most mothers observe that their babies tend to sleep while they are bathing him or while he is feeding in the afternoon or so. Wake up your baby if that happens and complete the activity. He might get cranky and not sleep, which might continue for a couple of days. After that, he will understand the timings and begin to fall asleep accordingly.
Tips to Take Care of Your 13-week-old Baby
Here are some tips that you should follow to take care of your 14-week-old baby.
Take care of your baby’s skin by making sure it doesn’t get too dry. Make use of moisturizers and humidifiers if dry skin persists.
Take your baby out in the park or garden, or let him interact with other babies when you go for a morning or evening walk.
Let your baby sleep for fixed hours and try creating a fixed schedule for all activities so that your baby can start looking forward to them, too.

Tests and Vaccinations
Having completed 3 months fully and getting him vaccinated on time, it is time to prepare him for another round of vaccinations. These could be done either via injections or by giving oral medications.
One of the first injections that will be given around this time is the DTaP/IPV/Hib vaccine, which takes care of polio and many other diseases, like diphtheria. Another vaccine that is administered via injection is the MenC vaccine. This takes care of meningococcal viruses and prevents them from attacking the child. Finally, the next round of the rotavirus vaccine is given, but this is mostly given orally instead of via injection.
Games and Activities
The auditory sense of your baby will grow quite a lot. Understanding sounds, music, and tonality, they begin to notice how the same sound can be emitted in different notes as well. But instead of simply using music, you can take your baby to the kitchen for a change of environment and give him a drumming 101 session. Make use of utensils around the house, plastic boxes, cardboard boxes, or anything that is in a different material than others. Putting them all together in one place, grab a small stick or a ladle and slowly hit each object to make a sound. The different sounds will get your baby intrigued and excited. Start playing something musical and your baby may start clapping away, too. Then, turn your baby around to look at his face and use your mouth to create those same drumbeat sounds. This entire activity will keep your little one engaged for many days to come.
Babies love water and playing with it. If you have a bathtub or even a smaller tub, fill it with warm water and gently put your baby in it. Make sure his head is always above the water, and use your hand to support him with that. Then splash some water using your hands and then grab his feet to create the splashes as well. Let your baby take some time in figuring out how his feet can make the water splash. Once that is done, your bathroom will turn into a water park within no time.

When to Consult a Doctor
Around this age, babies tend to suffer from thrush, which is mostly a yeast-related infection. This manifests in the form of white spots or patches on the inner areas of the mouth, including the cheeks and lips. This can be passed on to the mother as well during breastfeeding and make your nipples hurt. Talk to your doctor if such a condition exists.
Heading speedily towards month 4, your baby will start picking up so many activities and learn so many new things that his growth will astound you. Keep all those memories intact and make sure to spend as much time with the baby as possible.

Shoulder Presentation - All You Should Be Aware Of
Most doctors and midwives will recommend that you have a natural vaginal birth if you have a choice. However, there are certain complications that can sometimes present themselves and stop this from happening. Shoulder presentation is one such complication.
When Does the Fetus Move in Birthing Position?
A baby will most likely begin to move into the birthing position latest by week 30. She will have her head down and facing your spine, her body and face more inclined to one side and arms will be folded across the chest. Any other position is not normal.
What is Shoulder Presentation?
This is an abnormal fetus position where the baby is in a transverse lie, causing the baby’s shoulder to be positioned to come out first if vaginal delivery is attempted. However, since this is very easy to diagnose, doctors will always recommend a C-Section and never even suggest attempting to deliver the child through the normal vaginal delivery.
What is Transverse Lie?
A transverse lie is a position where your baby is lying sideways with her head to one of your sides and her bottom at your other side. This position is considered normal before 26 gestational weeks.
What is the Frequency of Shoulder Presentation?
Shoulder presentation takes place in 1 out of every 300 births and is commonly seen in premature and macerated babies. It is five times more likely to happen in a woman who has had children before than it is to occur in a first-time mother. Mothers carrying twins are also 40% more likely to have at least one baby in shoulder position.
What Causes Shoulder Presentation?
Here are some reasons why shoulder presentation can take place:
1. Contracted Pelvis
A very narrow pelvis in the mother can cause a shoulder presentation to occur.
2. Placenta Previa
A condition where the placenta blocks the uterus opening, either completely or partially. This makes it difficult for your baby’s head to enter the pelvic brim.
3. Intra-Uterine Fetal Death
There are times when the fetus dies inside the womb, and when this happens, the muscle tone starts to degenerate, which results in the fetus falling lower into the uterus.
4. Lax Abnormal Musculature
Women who have had multiple pregnancies may have more relaxed uterine and abdominal muscles. This will make their ability to keep the baby in the normal position very difficult.
5. Uterine Over Distension
There are many reasons why a uterus can become enlarged. Some of these include a large baby, polyhydramnios, multiple pregnancies and others. A uterus that is too large very often leads to shoulder presentation.
6. Polyhydramnios
A very large amount of amniotic fluid that is present in the uterus is known as polyhydramnios. This causes the fetus to be able to move very freely in the uterus and will lead to shoulder presentation.
7. Uterine Abnormalities
There are different abnormalities in the uterus that can cause your baby to move into shoulder presentation. Some of these are the bicornuate uterus, assub-septate uterus and fibroid uterus.
How is Shoulder Presentation Diagnosed?
Here is how Shoulder presentation diagnosed:
The top of the mother’s uterus to the top of the pelvic bone is called a fundus. The height of the fundus is an indicator of whether or not the baby is in the shoulder presentation.
The uterus becomes broader
The mother can feel the baby’s head on one abdominal side
If shoulder presentation takes place, arms prolapse will cause the baby’s arm to be seen outside the vagina.
During a vaginal examination, the mother will be able to feel the babies ribs
Complications of Shoulder Presentation
If your doctor identifies that you have shoulder presentation before you go into labour, he will opt for a C-Section instead. If there is a case of neglected shoulder presentation and it is only identified after you go into labour, it becomes very dangerous, and you face many complications. Here are some of the complications that can occur:
1. Cord Prolapse
When the umbilical cord comes out before the fetus does, it is called a cord prolapse and is very dangerous as it can cause the baby’s heart rate to drop, cause changes in blood pressure and even result in brain damage to the baby.
2. Ruptured Uterus
The myometrial wall is the middle layer of the wall of the uterine. The breach of this layer during childbirth is a rupture in the uterus, and it is very dangerous for both mother and child.
3. Fetal Hypoxia
When your baby doesn’t get enough oxygen, it will lead to suffocation, and if the necessary measures are not taken, it will result in death.
4. Obstructed Labour
Though contractions are taking place, the baby is not able to come through the birth canal as there is something blocking the way. Failure to diagnose and remedy this condition is a major reason why both mother and child die during childbirth.
5. Trauma to Prolapsed Arm
If there is a prolapsed arm, there is a higher chance that it will be injured or damaged. This injury may be severe and could last for a lifetime.
How is Shoulder Presentation Managed?
Here is how Shoulder presentation is managed:
1. C-Section
The first choice for doctors who have a case of shoulder presentation is a C-Section. This is the safest method that ensures the safety of both mother and child.
2. External Cephalic Version
In this procedure, your baby’s heartbeat will be monitored, and you will be given medication through an IV to ensure a relaxed uterus. Your doctor will then place her hands on the outside of your stomach and attempt to turn your baby into the correct position.
3. Internal Podalic Version
This is only used in the case of twins, where the second twin will need to be moved into a breech position and then extracted.
Though it sounds scary, if you keep a careful track of your baby’s position in the weeks before delivery, you will be able to identify and rectify the problem before it becomes serious. Exercising throughout your pregnancy will be very helpful in ensuring that your baby gets into the correct position for labour.

Psoriasis in Pregnancy - Symptoms, Risks and Treatment
Psoriasis is a skin condition that leads to the formation of redness on the skin that comes along with patches and scaling. Many woman who suffer from this disease contemplate on the fact whether psoriasis would affect their pregnancy in any way. As physicians recommend not to consider any treatment when pregnant, it becomes difficult to understand exactly what to do. Read on further to know all about psoriasis and its relation to pregnancy.
What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is an abnormal skin condition that causes abnormal patches on the skin. Such patches are characterised by red, scaly marks on the skin that may be accompanied by itching. This disease is a kind of an auto-immune one, i.e. it is a condition that arises due to an abnormal response of the body’s immunity system when it gets activated by antigens.
The patches associated with psoriasis may vary from tiny patches to complete body coverage, depending on the severity of the disease. Some areas that get affected by this rare disease include the skin, scalp, elbows and the knee area. Generally, psoriasis is considered as a long-lasting disease that is non-contagious in nature. Although it is found to be a non-curable one, but treatments have been found that may help reduce the abnormal scaling to an extent.
Symptoms of Psoriasis
The underlying symptoms of psoriasis are noticed to vary on the basis of severity of the problem. However, some of the common symptoms that one may notice, include:
Dryness: When your skin appears to be extremely dry, psoriasis may be the reason. Also, you may notice that your super sensitivity, in turn, may lead to easy bleeding even on minor scratch.
Abnormal Nails: If your nails turn to become thick, rutted or corrugated, consult a physician as it could be due to psoriasis.
Patching and Scaling: If your skin starts developing red patches along with silvery scaling, be sure of psoriasis.
Burning Sensations: If the area with red patches starts to give you burning sensations, do not hesitate to consult a doctor.
Itching: If you can’t stop itching on the red and scaly patches, psoriasis could be the disease you may be suffering from.
Swelling Or Stiffness: In case along with all other symptoms you also get a swelling in the joints that leads to stiffness, seek medical help immediately.
Can Pregnancy Affect Psoriasis?
While a woman is pregnant, she is likely to show improvement in psoriasis. There are fair 40-60% chances that a woman would recover if not fully, then partially from psoriasis during her pregnancy. The fact to be noted here is that maximum improvement in psoriasis is shown at the end of first and the second trimester of pregnancy.
Also, one must not ignore the fact that in some rare cases, pregnancy may alleviate the issue to a larger scale, which may bring severe psoriasis and pregnancy complications.
Can Psoriasis Affect Pregnancy?
One should note the fact that psoriasis does not in any sense affect the ability of a woman to bear children. So far, no cases of miscarriages have been registered due to the occurrence of psoriasis. Also, there have been noted no birth defects in children just because the mother is suffering from this rare condition. However, a study has found that women with severe psoriasis have given birth to babies with lower weights as compared to the normal or mild cases.
How to Treat Psoriasis when Pregnant?
Psoriasis may become difficult to handle in case of pregnancy. Especially when you need to visit your gynaecologist and lay bare your body, it may turn embarrassing. Generally, it is recommended to not continue any psoriasis medication when pregnant, but if you wish to treat this rare condition, you could consider the following:
Apply moisturisers or emollients on your skin, as recommended by your physician. Likewise, you can also opt for petroleum jelly that not only helps soothe the skin but also helps moisten the dry skin.
A physician may also recommend you to use a topical steroid, i.e. a special cream for reducing skin inflammations. But, a pregnant woman should be very careful while applying it near the breast area. This is because some pregnant women start producing breast milk while on pregnancy; applying of these topical steroids may lead to mixing it with breast milk and that is not at all an ideal situation.
In some rare cases where pregnant women may be suffering from severe form of psoriasis, ointments or topical may not be helpful. In such cases, a physician may end up implementing narrow-band UVB, i.e. Ultraviolet Light B photo therapy on the patient.
Or, alternatively depending on how severe the condition is, your physician may also implement a broad-band UVB, i.e. Ultraviolet Light B photo therapy.
Tips to Soothe Psoriasis at Home
Though it is highly recommended to consult your doctor if you are pregnant and suffering from psoriasis, you can follow simple home remedies for soothing your red, scaly and patchy skin:
Keep your body moisturised. This is the simplest solution for treating skin drying and itching. You could also ask your skin specialist to recommend you a good moisturiser that could effectively work on your skin type.
Do not exert yourself much as the accumulation of sweat around the psoriasis area can lead to more of irritation and itching.
Avoid taking hot water shower as hot water can only worsen the condition.
Prefer applying Aloe Vera gel on psoriasis affected area, at least 2-3 times a day. This helps lessen red patches and the associated scaling to an extent.
Can The Baby be Affected or Get Psoriasis
Looking at the history of genetics and hereditary, it can be said that a baby may develop psoriasis. But it all depends on case to case. In some situations, the baby may develop psoriasis, and in some cases, the born baby may go unaffected. But the fetus is likely to develop the diseases in case a woman is taking medications for psoriasis during her pregnancy. This is the reason that most of the physicians do not recommend relying on medications when pregnant.
In some cases, babies have been found to be affected by psoriasis due to breastfeeding as this disease sometimes leads to the formation of bleeding ulcers on the surface of the breast nipples.
Also, one should note the fact that a baby may not simply get a hold on psoriasis just post delivery. The born child may even develop this disease later in life.
Looking at all the stated facts and information, it is clear that psoriasis is a kind of disease that may brighten or even darken the situation for a pregnant woman. All depends from person to person or from case to case. However, a woman should always consult her gynaecologist and skin specialist before relying on any medication, when pregnant.

A Review of the Intellikit by Firstcry- A Must Try for All Moms!
The
latest rage among mothers of young children is the Intellikit by Firstcry.
Haven’t heard of them yet? Let me explain why they are so popular! Designed
to cater to the age groups 2-3 years (Little Masters), 3-4 years (Everyday
Heroes) and 4-6 years (Young Professionals), these activity boxes are the
perfect way to keep kids away from screen time. In fact the motto of these kits
is asking parents to “Take the #NoScreenDay pledge.”
On the 1st anniversary of The
South Delhi Playdates Group, Firstcry sent across 9 trial boxes of the
intellikit for kids between the ages of 2-3 years. These included 2 activities,
3 worksheets, 3 intellicards, a sample calendar of activities and a sample
development tracker. The activities were designed to instantly engage the
attention of toddlers. The two piece puzzles were a big hit, as was the Velcro
sticking activity and the star shaped stickers. The theme of the trial kit was ‘Space’
and the material was completely in-sync with that. There
are a lot of activity boxes and kits in the market so what makes the Intellikit
by Firstcry stand out?
Let’s have a look at some of its unique features·
Just
the right number of activities. The main kits have 8 activities
and 10 worksheets which is just the correct number to keep the kids engaged
over the period of a few weeks.·
Can do
each activity more than once. Young toddlers often want to
return to an activity they
enjoyed and the intellikit allows you to do that. There are a large number of
stickers; the two
piece puzzles can be done any number of times as can the Velcro activity.·
Easy-to-handle
material which allows little hands to sift through and choose what
they want to do.·
Added
benefits of the calendar and development tracker which
enables parents to monitor how
the progress the children have made as
well as provide extra activities to perform during the month!·
Reasonably
priced. Most of the other kits in the market are quite expensive
which makes parents hesitate to make that kind of investment, especially for
young toddlers who have short attention spans.Overall,
the Intellikit by Firstcry is well-designed, easy to use and engaging. I have
seldom come across 9 kids in a room sitting in such silence! They were all
enthralled with the activities and sat and completed quite a few of them in one
sitting. As part
of the group’s promotion, Firstcry has offered a 70% discount (yes, that’s a
huge discount!) and a large number of moms have already placed orders for the
same. The interesting thing is that mothers with older kids have also ordered
the Intellikit designed for the 3-4 years and 4-6 years age group. All in
all, I’d recommend the Firstcry Intellikit program as a mom who is interested
in her child’s development and also needs to keep her kid engaged and busy. The
activities can be repeated over and over and they never stop being fun! Read more
