Is Your Baby Sleeping Enough for His Age? 5 Tips to Help Your Baby Sleep Peacefully!
Learn everything about baby sleep. How many hours of sleep does a newborn need? What can hinder a peaceful sleep? How can you help your baby make the transition to peaceful night sleep? Here are the answers of all your questions.
You must have heard horror stories of sleepless nights and insomniac babies. Some of it are definitely true. However, with a night-time routine in place and some luck, within a few months of bringing your baby home, you can look forward to happier nights.
How Much Sleep is Enough?
The good news is that a newborn sleeps for about 16 hours a day. The bad news is it’s never at a stretch. In the first few months, he will probably nap for two or three hours only. His stomach is small and needs frequent refills. Don't look forward to more than 6 hours of uninterrupted sleep even at night, the first 6 months. Generally, babies between 2 and 12 months sleep for 9-12 hours, most of which will be at night. Don’t try a sleep routine too soon. Let the baby decide when he wants to wake up – whether due to hunger, wet diapers or simply because he’s had his fill of sleep.
Deconstructing Baby Sleep
Like adults, babies also experience sleep cycles from drowsiness to light sleep, deep sleep and dream sleep (REM – a state when his eyes are active under his closed eyelids, but the rest of his body is still) and then all the way back from dream sleep to wakefulness. When he returns to being awake, if there are no distractions (like an empty stomach) he slips back into sleep. Some babies are self-soothers and do it on their own, while others may need to be patted or fed before they fall asleep again. During quiet sleep, it is normal for the baby to have some sudden starts called hypnagogic startles. Hynagonic startles means the sudden movements of the baby’s body in quiet sleep.
Baby Sleep and New Skills
Some of the baby’s newfound skills might interfere with his sleep patterns.
1. Crawling
As the baby learns to crawl, his brain stimulation increases and even though he might be tired, he may find it tough to sleep.
2. Object Permanence
As he turns six months old, he realizes that things do not cease to exist when he cannot see them. He might refuse to sleep when you’re not around.
3. Separation Anxiety
He will start missing you, and might insist on you being around each time he opens his eyes.
Co-sleeping
Traditionally in India, co-sleeping has been propagated and it does lead to stronger emotional - parental bonds. However, if you find it uncomfortable, especially in the case of multiple babies, you can move them from the crib to the bed.
A Few Tips to Make the Night Time Easier
Create a soothing environment. Remove bright colours and noisy toys.
Soft toys, heavy blankets or pillows aren’t a good idea for small babies, as they act as hindrances and offer risk of suffocation.
The mattress should be firm, and the baby should be put to sleep on his back to avoid Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
Swaddling the baby with his arms inside the blanket gives him a sense of familiarity, mimicking the pressure he feels in the womb, and helps him sleep longer.
Establishing a night time routine between two and three months is a good idea.Parents need not panic about sleepless nights, with some patience and efforts, you can solve your baby’s sleeping problems.

My Counting Seconds to See My Baby and She Was Waiting for Me
My baby's birth story is like a thriller movie with all suspense, chills but with a happy ending. I had a complicated pregnancy. Advised bed rest because of previous miscarriage. I had to resign from my job. Only my husband was there during my difficult time of pregnancy. I had bleeding in the 13th week of pregnancy, I was scared but the baby was fine. In the 24th week, I had to undergo cervical stitch as my cervix was dilating.
On the night of April 30th, I couldn't have dinner. There were menstrual period-like cramps at around 8 pm. I was not sure what pain it was. It was my 32nd week of pregnancy. My due date was June 14th. The whole night I couldn't sleep. I had read about the delivery pain which will occur with time intervals. So, I started to check time intervals. My pain was occurring in intervals. I didn't know what to do. I couldn't wake my husband as he was in deep sleep. I walked around the house for a while. It was a very mild pain. Then I woke my husband up at 7 am and called my doctor and informed her. She told me to come to the hospital.
My younger sister had planned to visit me as she had a holiday on May 1st. We all went to the hospital. With some ultrasound and machine check-up, it was made sure that it was delivery pain. As it was the 32nd week, my doctor wanted to postpone my delivery and as a precautionary measure, an injection was given to develop lungs. My pain reduced and I was under observation till May 2nd. The doctor advised discharge from hospital and complete bed rest at home. We were just getting ready to leave the hospital and again pain started.
So, back to the hospital bed. On May 2nd night, my baby's movement was too much in my stomach. I got worried but the nurse said it's fine and that I should inform her if there is no movement. It was May 3rd. I woke up the next morning and observed there was no movement, got shivering and my sister called the nurse. Then the whole nursing staff came running and observed my baby's breathing on the monitor. Actual reading should be maximum 120, but it was 170,190. Then Doctor came running and said "emergency delivery".
I didn't know what to do. I was in shock. I looked at my husband. He was also blinking. My mother in law said, "Pray to God, everything will be good." I was happy that I will see my baby soon and I will be holding her in my arms. I was so tensed about how she will be like. I never had negative thoughts even for a second. The nurse told me not to get tensed as it might effect my baby. I went into the operating room with a smile and a calm heart.
I was given anesthesia and in 10 minutes, my baby was delivered. I thought they will show my baby to me but she was rushed to another room. Her crying was not loud and she was grunting. I asked the doctor whether everything was fine. She said everything is fine and it's a girl.
I was kept in the observation room and my baby was in NICU. Then, it was observed that my baby's breathing was not normal. She was shifted to another hospital. I was in one hospital and she was in another. My husband was with her and my sister with me. It took so many hours for me to gain consciousness and my chills to stop. I was under too much pain.
The doctor said that my baby will be brought back soon. I was just waiting. Then the next day evening, the doctor said that her breathing is not consistent, she has to be still in another hospital. I had not cried till then but I was out of control. I was shattered. It was already 24 hours since delivery and I had not seen my little girl. I cried and cried and requested the doctor to shift me to the same hospital. She said to wait till the next day. My heart was breaking and God only knows how much my heart was aching to see my baby. After 48 hours of observation, I was discharged from that hospital and shifted to the same hospital where my baby was there. I was just counting minutes to see her. When we reached NICU, my heart was beating so fast. We entered inside, she was plugged with so many tubes and was sleeping like an angel. I couldn't hold her in arms but I touched her tiny feet and hands. She held me tight as if she was waiting for me. I told her to open your eyes baby, your mama and dadda are here. She just gave a smile and I cried holding my husband.

Here's Proof you are Obsessed With Good Health!
A clean and green diet chart that doesn't easily budge even on weekends is a sign you are a health freak. Staying healthy gives you confidence, keeps illnesses at bay and makes you enjoy the highest levels of mental freshness. Kudos for taking good care of yourself!
You love it when your loved ones rate you as a fitness freak. Oh yes, you enjoy taking good care of your diet, exercise plans, sleeping hours, and positive thoughts too. Be it about using those weight reduction machines regularly, dozing for eight hours every day (come hail or storm), and whipping up delish detox smoothies--you're pretty mindful of all that you put on your plate.
Sure Signs That You Are A Health Freak
1. Drinking Straight from The Faucet? Eeeks!
Seeing others quench their thirst straight out of the faucet makes you giddy. How can they be so unhygienic? For you, it’s always been stainless steel flasks with filtered water that works best. Packaged mineral water in plastic bottles? No way!
2. Refined Oil, What’s That?
Pure virgin olive oil is your one and only ingredient for cooking and beauty-care purposes. While tossing a salad, baking a sandwich or massaging your stretch marks, there’s nothing that can replace the goodness of olive oil.
3. It's Green or Nothing to Start The Day
Other family members may be making their first tea or coffee of the day, but you're raiding your fridge for greens. They all think you're being a health nut, but do you care? Your focus is on making your skin glow and removing all bloat. And on days when you miss this magic formula, you drive across town to that trendy juice bar that serves green smoothies too!
4. Candles, Meditation CDS and Other Zen Things
Your bedside table has little space left for a few more ‘your’ time and meditation aids. You begin your balanced day with pranic music and end the day with magnetic therapy. In between, whenever you find a few spare moments, you tilt your chair back and zoom into the alpha levels of your subconscious. Hey, we forgot to mention your social media ‘quote of the day’ that keeps proving that you enjoy good mental health too!
5. What’s in The Tiffin?
Be it for your hubby, you, or your kids, tiffins are equal to veggies, sprouted salads, almond butter sandwiches, cottage cheese cutlets (obviously baked, not fried) and other such preparations. Anything that contains excessive fat, processed stuff or too much sugar can never be on the wish-list. Why? You obviously know better!
If you relate to these signs of a healthy lifestyle, then be a proud girl. Spread the word and give others your support in sorting out their dietary plans and health issues. Go for it! Read more

Read more
