Paneer palak paratha for kids school lunch box or morning breakfast
For the morning rush to prepare a healthy yet quick kids lunch which is easy for the kids to neatly hold and eat. This is not an rocket science anymore. I am sharing one of the receipe as below which my kid likes-
Ingredients :
Wheat flour -5 cups
Nicely cleaned palak- 5-6 leaves
Paneer grated- 1/2cup
Coriander powder-1tbsp
Chat masala- 2tsp
Coriander leaves- finely chopped
Green chillies-1-2 - finely chopped
Salt as needed
Onion - 1 medium sized finely chopped
Method-
Blanch the palak leaves and make coarse puree using mixer after it cools.
Take the wheat flour in a clean bowl. Add the palak puree and salt to it. Kneed the flour with water as needed. It is important to add palak puree first. Only then you will know how much water is needed to kneed.Coat the surface of dough with oil and set aside.
In another bowl mix finely chopped onions, grated paneer, finely chopped coriander leaves, green chillies. Add 2tbsp coriander powder, 1tsp chat masala, and salt as needed. Mix well and this is for stuffing.
Now make the balls of dough set aside and make centre space to fill it with paneer stuffing. Do not over stuff it. Seal on top properly. Even distribution and thick layer of dough around the stuffing is very important to avoid leaks. Pat and make it flat like disc and now using roll pin roll it from center to edges to evenly distribute the stuffing and spread it.
Put it on a heated tawa/pan. Greese it well with ghee on both sides and allow it to be done. You will see golden brown layer on both sides.
Hot paneer palak paratha is ready to eat.
Goes well with curd mixed with some dahi masala or some ketchup.
You craft some art using ketchup to make it more attractive.

Vernix Caseosa - Must Know Things for Parents
If you are a pregnant mother or if you have just given birth to a little child, you might have come across this term “Vernix Caseosa”. Although many people are ignorant of the vernix, it is something that is extremely crucial for your baby and also it is also something that will help pregnant women during the delivery time.
Our human body is built in such a way that there are protections and mechanisms to help it cope with the various process such as foreign bodies that might harm us. Sometimes we are just alarmed at how our body functions. Even in newborn babies, there are many amazing things that are happening naturally that is keeping the little one safe. The vernix is one such thing. It is a thin white substance on the skin of the babies that protect the child. This is called vernix caseosa. The vernix is extremely useful to the baby even before the child is born and after as well.
What is Vernix Caseosa?
If this term is new to you, then it’s high time you learn about this miracle formation on a new baby’s skin. The vernix caseosa which is also called vernix is a natural formation on the baby skin that can be seen during childbirth. It’s said to keep the formation on the skin for a while before rubbing it away. Vernix caseosa is something that helps babies stay protected from bacteria and infections while it also keeps the baby’s skin soft and supple.
When Does Vernix Develop?
The Vernix Caseosa is something that you will notice on your little baby when she is just born. However, this formation has been on babies way before they are delivered. It is said that the vernix is formed over the baby’s skin during the third trimester of the mother’s pregnancy. This is evidently noticed during the time of delivery.
What Does it Contain?
The vernix is a thin layer over the baby’s skin that plays a crucial role to protect the little child’s body. The formation is mostly water content, and apart from the water content, there is fat contents as well as proteins. There are also substances that help with the immunity of the child.
What is the Colour of Vernix?
Vernix is mostly white in colour but at times the colour of the vernix changes. Vernic can appear to be yellowish brown, and at times it even gets a slight greenish tinge to it. The colour can change after the baby has pooped for the first time. By this time, you can wipe the vernix away from the skin.
Does it Wash Away Easily?
It is possible to wash the vernix from your baby’s skin. However, it is best not to wash it away, immediately. You can wait for a while and wipe it away from your baby's skin, instead of washing it away. The WHO has even said that the vernix caseosa after birth can be on the baby for as long as 24 hours. In fact, even weeks later, you might still find some layers lingering here and there. It might not completely come out when you wipe it for the first time.
Should You Delay a Newborn Baby’s First Bath?
The Vernix is something that keeps the baby skin soft and protected. Although many people take the baby for an immediate wash, it is best to delay the first bath for as much time as possible, and the vernix on your little baby will only protect him during the time.
What if Vernix Caseosa is Missing?
There are times when the delivery of the baby is overdue, and during this time vernix is hardly found on the baby. It can even be completely missing as well. This is because the vernix slowly dissolves over time, especially close to the birth time. The vernix actually gets diluted in the amniotic fluid.
Benefits of the Vernix Caseosa
The vernix caseosa has many amazing benefits for the mother and even for the little baby. Some of them are
1. Helps in Delivery
The vernix is quite slippery and helps the mother during delivery as due to its presence the baby slips out a lot easier.
2. Fights Germs
The vernix also helps in fighting bacteria and other germs that are quite harmful to the baby. This is also because the vernix has an antibacterial property and highly protects the child from any such dangers.
3. Acts as a Moisturizer
The vernix is a natural moisturizer that helps keep the child’s skin smooth and soft. Although the vernix of the baby skin looks unpleasant, it is actually keeping the baby skin in healthy condition. Without the vernix, the baby skin will be chapped and might even have wrinkles.
4. Keeps the Body Warm
In many cases, babies are kept in a warm place right after they are born because their bodies are still getting used to the temperature around them. The vernix is a natural layer that helps the baby stay warm.
5. Protection of the Skin
The vernix is a natural way to help the baby from the acids like the amniotic fluid in which the baby is developing during pregnancy. This also safeguards the little one from infections.
6. It is Special to Human Beings
The vernix is something that is unique to human beings. It has many amazing properties including antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that protect the baby.
There are times when we are not aware of the things that happen when a little baby is born. The body will be finding ways to adapt to the new environment. At times we might be overwhelmed by how things are working out and how the human body is even built. During the time of pregnancy or right after it, it is important to remember that you have to allow the baby to go through the natural process. In fact, there are no scientific or medical ways that can replace the natural ways in which the baby copes with new life. In every way, it is the safest and best.

Save Tender Eyes - Get Your Newborn's Eyes Examined by an Opthalmologist
Eye screening/checkup for newborns is still not mandatory in India. Many parents know about problems with their baby's vision only when they themselves see visible abnormalities in the eyes. This delay usually means the baby loses a little eyesight or has eyesight at all.
During the crucial first year of a baby, the brain needs to process visual information clearly. If proper signals don't reach the brain through the eye, the brain may stop interpreting those signals. That is what is called blindness. Most of the time, this type of blindness are avoidable if babies are checked early. Usually, paediatricians don't have entire know-how or equipments to detect these anomalies. Hence it is the responsibility of a parent to take the first step towards an opthalmologist on their own. (Till a firm rule is established by Ministry of Heath and Family Welfare and other State Departments, making it mandatory for all hospitals undertaking delivery).
This blog is based on my experience where my newborn daughter was diagnosed with 'Congenital Cataract' which means cataract since birth. This can happen because of n number of reasons (most of them not in our control). It can happen to anyone. We have observed that hospitals in North India don't get a complete diagnosis done for newborns by specialists. Mostly it could be because parents themselves aren't aware of things that need early diagnosis and may think that hospitals prescribe unnecessary tests to mint money.
Because of all these reasons issues like Congenital Cataract often go unnoticed. In our case, from the beginning itself, I had in my mind that a checkup of all sensory organs should be done for my child. But soon after birth, no such checkup was done. After a few weeks, we asked our paediatrician if everything is alright with the baby (sight and hearing) and he said yes. When we asked if we could get a proper eye check-up done, he told, you can get it done anytime after she is a month old. So we waited for a month and then went to an eye hospital fora normal checkup. And that's when the opthalmologists told us our baby has Congenital Cataract. They asked us with curiosity, how we knew that there was something wrong (since nothing was visible tothe untrained eye). That's when we told them that it was just a routine eye examination that we wanted to have.
We did our internet research, asked family and friends across the globe to know what's the best treatment possible. And we came to know that operation is the only way to remove the cataract, as it's done in adults through keyhole surgery. We started shortlisting hospitals in India and selected one. When we reached there, we met many parents of babies and kids with this same condition. It was then we realized how lucky we were to get the diagnosis done so early. Most other parents had realised this only when they had seen clouding or white patches in the eyeballs of their babies.
The biology to be remembered here is pretty simple -
The first year of a baby is very crucial for his/her development. Their brain learns to process different information from the outside world (including sight, sound, touch, taste etc). If this information is not properly received, the brain diverts it's attention to other senses and stops interpreting data from the sensory organ which is not funtioning properly.
In the case of eyes - That is when a baby turns blind (when the brain stops interpreting data from the eyes because vision is blocked by cloudiness of natural lens in the eye called Cataract).
Removing the Cataract affected lens is the only way vision can be cleared. And instead of the affected lens, a new artificial lens is implanted (called an IOL - Intra Ocular Lens).
This process usually takes only a few minutes under general anaesthesia for a baby. (And local anaesthesia for adults).
Unlike adults who have very little chances of complications, babies have a hard time. As their eyeballs are not fully developed until the age of 2 or 5 in some cases. So extra care is required. At times babies can't be given the IOL implant because of their eye being small. In that case, babies have to be provided with Contact Lenses and Spectacles. This might seem weird in the first instance. How can babies wear contact lenses? But yes, they have to. Parents are given extensive training on how to put and take them off from their kids eyes daily. Yes, that's right- 'daily'. ( Until IOL is implanted).
So we are at that stage where we are waiting for our daughters' contact lens as of now that is being built to order.
Readers, by now you might have understood how important it is to get vision tested for your babies.
So my humble request is wake up and take an appointment with a paediatric opthalmologist or a general opthalmologist for your newborn. Because they can't tell you how they see.
Thanks, if you read till here.
I'll keep posting more information about this.
