10 Pregnancy Hacks That Will Make Your Life Easier
Pregnancy is a beautiful phase but it comes with its own set of challenges. Morning sickness or nausea is normal during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, but you may also experience some other common problems such as headaches, swollen feet, mood swings, pain in the back, etc. However, there are certain things that you can do (or try) to have a comfortable pregnancy.
10 Pregnancy Hacks All Pregnant Women Should Try
Learn some genius pregnancy hacks to enjoy your nine months of pregnancy. If you experience any discomfort, try the tips mentioned below and make the most of this time.
1. Invest in a Maternity Pillow
As your bump will grow, you will require a pillow to support your increasing belly and your legs. If you have been using your regular pillows to support yourself for a long time now, then it's time you reconsider your options. Instead of using the same old pillows, invest in a good maternity pillow. Maternity pillows are designed to provide support to the back and legs. So it's a must-have for moms-to-be.
2. Use Tonic Water for Swollen Feet
Swollen feet is a very common pregnancy problem that most women face. But you can tackle this problem by using tonic water. Fill a tub with tonic water and soak your feet. Keep your feet soaked for about 15 to 20 minutes then wash them with normal water. Oedema or swelling is normal during pregnancy and can be noticed on the hands as well. However, if you notice swelling on your feet, hands, face or eyes all of a sudden, get in touch with your doctor.
3. Try Prenatal Yoga
There are many yoga asanas that are safe for pregnant women. Practising yoga asanas will help strengthen your body and even stretch your muscles. It will also prepare you for labour and delivery. By performing yoga daily, you can deal with unwanted headaches, insomnia, shortness of breath, nausea, etc. However, you should consult with your doctor before indulging in any kind of yoga or exercise.
4. Eat Citrus Fruits to Deal with Nausea
Nausea and morning sickness can make your nine months of pregnancy extremely uncomfortable, however, eating citrus can help you combat these issues. You can simply eat an orange or drink lemon water to get relief from nausea and morning sickness.
5. Eat Bananas and Drink Electrolyte Water
It is common to experience leg cramps during the third trimester of pregnancy. Most pregnant woman suffer from muscle spasms in their legs, and they may have leg cramps because of the additional weight gain during this time. You may also experience leg cramp at night during the second and third trimester. A common but often ignored cause of leg crams is dehydration. To get relief from it, try to drink at least 2-3 litres of water daily. You can also drink electrolyte water. It is loaded with nutrients and can instantly hydrate your body. You can eat bananas too. They are loaded with potassium, which makes them an ideal remedy for cramps.
6. Invest in Belly Bands
If you want to exercise during pregnancy, a belly band will be your best investment. Belly bands are designed to support the lower back and abdomen during pregnancy. You can carry out your daily tasks easily while wearing a belly band. A belly band will support your bump and will provide relief from joint and back pain during this time.
7. Keep a Pair of Tongs Handy
As you enter the second and third trimester of pregnancy, you will gain additional weight, and may have trouble bending down. And you can forget about lifting things lying on the floor in your house. But do you have to? Yes, you can depend on your family members; they will help you out and to do things for you. But if they are not around, you can keep a pair of tongs handy. If you drop something, use tongs to lift it. However, try this hack only if is absolutely necessary. Don't risk your and your baby's life.
8. Buy Bra Extenders
As your pregnancy progresses, your belly and breasts will get bigger, and wearing the same old bras can get very uncomfortable for you. You can consider maternity bras, of course, but if you want something inexpensive, you can buy bra extenders. Using bra extenders will make your bras fit better when the waistband becomes tighter. However, if the cup size becomes an issue then buying a new bra would be a better option.
9. Keep Your '3 AM' Snacks Handy
Snacking at the middle of the night, especially during pregnancy may sound a bit weird but it can actually help relieve morning sickness. The main culprit for morning sickness is empty stomach. But if you snack (healthy snacks, of course!) at this hour or late night, your tummy won't be empty and there will be fewer chances of morning sickness. Alternatively, you can have healthy snacks when you get up too.
10. Eat Ginger Candy If You Experience Morning Sickness
Ginger can help ward off morning sickness as it has stomach-calming properties. Whenever, you experience morning sickness pop a ginger candy in your mouth or drink some ginger-ale. You can even chew on some organic ginger candies in the morning to prevent morning sickness in the first place. Also, carry a few ginger candies in your bag to battle untimely nausea or morning sickness.
Pregnancy is a wonderful phase but it is accompanied by a few inconveniences too. However, you don't have to worry. Try the hacks mentioned above and have a healthy and happy pregnancy.

Caffeine and Fertility
Caffeine is the most widely used legal and unregulated psychoactive drug in the world. It is present in various food and beverages such as coffee, chocolate cake, brownie, tea and so on. Most of us give in to the temptation of these luscious foods. But do you know that too much of caffeine is not good for your health?
How Does Caffeine Affect Fertility?
By now, there must be several questions rushing through your head about caffeine and its effect on one's fertility such as "Does it impact our health"? Does caffeine affect getting pregnant? Does caffeine affect male fertility? We have got all your answers covered below:
Effects on Male Fertility
Well, there are contradictory results from the research on the correlation between male fertility and caffeine intake. According to one study, caffeine has no effect whatsoever on semen quality or sperm count. Another study shows that heavy intake of coffee results in low success rate during fertility treatments such as IVF. To be safe, men are recommended to consume it moderately, especially if you have been trying for a child with your partner for some time or are underway a fertility treatment.
Effects on Female Fertility
Well, ladies, there are several means by which caffeine may affect your fertility and pregnancy state as explained below:
Caffeine is known for causing muscular movement of the fallopian tube. The fertilization of eggs takes place inside the fallopian tube, once fertilized it moves the eggs to the uterus. So, a muscular movement induced by caffeine might affect the position of eggs, which might move the eggs to a place which is not ideal for a viable pregnancy.
Researchers have found that due the above reason, caffeine reduces the probability of getting pregnant by 27 percent.
There are medical results which indicate that caffeine users have a higher probability of miscarriages as compared to non-users.
How Much Intake of Caffeine Is Fine?
According to Dr. Ronald Gray, PhD, a professor in the Department of Population, Family and Reproductive health at the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, per day consumption should not cross over 300 milligrams of caffeine.
Amount of Caffeine Available in Some Common Food and Beverages
Did you know that not all types of coffee contain the same amount of caffeine? The amount of caffeine in a serving of coffee is determined by several factors such as the type of bean used, method of roasting, serving size and the method of brewing.
Caffeine-rich food includes soft drinks, tea, ice cream, kola nuts and chocolate. Even herbal products, medicines for a headache, cold and allergies contain caffeine. Give below is the list of caffeine available in some common food and beverages:

Cutting Back On Caffeine from Your Diet
If you are determined to cut down on your caffeine intake, then try doing so gradually to avoid withdrawal symptoms such as a headache or fatigue. You may start with diluting your beverages or brewing it for a shorter time. Alternatively, you may opt for half decaf or half brewed coffee.
How Can You Get By Without Having Caffeine Rich Foods?
Coffee and infertility are closely related in women. According to some studies , excessive dosage of caffeine and trying to conceive do not go hand in hand and often leads to miscarriages as well. Considering to go for caffeine-free lifestyle? Check out the below tips to get started.
Start your day with protein-rich breakfast to have energy throughout the day
Replace coffee with hot chocolate which has less amount of caffeine than coffee.
Pour more milk in your coffee, so your coffee amount goes down.
Go for flavoured carbonated water, when you crave for soda drinks.
Avoid late afternoon or evening coffee routine as it interferes with your sleeping pattern.
It is clear from the above mentioned that one needs to take a moderate amount of caffeine to lower its impact on one’s health, especially, for expecting mothers. It’s highly risky, and hence consumption of caffeine is not recommended.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in Kids
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects more than 400,000 children every year. It happens when a child experiences symptoms like fear or shock for at least one month post a traumatic event. Usually, the incident involves a scary situation where they either would have seen something scary or would have gotten hurt or experienced the potential of getting seriously hurt or dying. Let’s learn a bit more about this disorder and how to treat a child who suffers from it.
What is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder?
Post-traumatic stress disorder is a condition that happens soon after a child has experienced something terrifying, either mentally or physically, causing him or her to have frightening and persistent memories or flashbacks of the even. Sometimes PTSD symptoms can go on for six months or more, but usually, it can be treated within three months. PTSD in children, if not treated over time, can develop into a chronic disorder.
What Causes PTSD in Kids?
In kids, the range of events that can cause PTSD is much more extensive than adults. For example, anything ‘painful, yucky or scary’ may not be strong enough to affect adults but can have a traumatic effect on kids who are smaller and less able to control their environment. Below are a few causes that can cause PTSD in kids:
1. Child Abuse
Child abuse and PTSD have a direct link. Any abuse whether it is physical, sexual, mental or even behaviour that a child might view as scary can be a traumatic event. This includes bullying by peers or adults.
2. Childhood Neglect
PTSD and child neglect are also commonly associated. If a child is neglected at an early age or subjected to adverse conditions, not only will they develop radical attachment disorder (RAD) but also experience PTSD.
3. Any Medical Intervention
If a child requires any medical intervention which involves surgeries, tests or procedures, the process can be scary and traumatic for them. For example, a child being wheeled into surgery and surrounded by doctors with their faces covered in masks before being subjected to a medical test can be traumatising.
4. Loss of a Loved One
Children who lose a parent or a sibling when they are young can experience PTSD later on from the resulting trauma.
5. Accidents
If a child is involved in a plane, car or train accident, it can result in trauma post the event. This is even true of accidents which happen on the playground or at home.
6. Violence
If a child witnesses any violent act at a young age, like a parent being abused, war, gang violence or shooting, then it may leave a traumatic effect on his mind.
7. Divorced Parents
A divorce between parents without them addressing the issue properly with their child often creates more trauma in the mind of the child than they would think.
8. Adopting
Even though adopting a child is a loving act, for many children it can cause trauma because it is still a significant change and they do not have any control over it. Newborns will feel the lack of their mother’s body rhythms and voices they were synced together for nine months. For older children, the trauma may be bigger.
9. Moving House
A new place, a new environment, a new school, and new friends to adjust to maybe stressful and traumatic for the child, as they again have no control over the situation and parents are usually too busy with the changes.
10. Calamities
Any disaster which occurs like an earthquake, tsunami, fire, flood, collapsing of a bridge and so on, where the child will see adults around him helpless, can cause some severe trauma and PTSD later on.
Which Children are Most at the Risk of Getting PTSD?
The following children are at a higher risk of getting PTSD
Children who have been through multiple occurrences of the event
Children who were extremely frightened by the event
Children who were nearby when the event occurred
Children who experienced prolonged traumatic events.
Kids whose parents and peers are not very supportive following the event
Kids who may not be too resilient post the event
Children who are unable to cope well after the event
Signs of PTSD in Children
To identify PTSD in children, symptoms usually include disturbing memories, flashbacks, or nightmares. Some other signs are:
Trouble sleeping
Feelings of depression or irritability
Loss of touch with reality
Reliving the event in his mind
Having flashbacks through association with certain sounds, smells or sights.
Problems in school
Problems focusing on something
Reluctance to visit certain places due to bad memories experienced there
Fear of dying at a young age
Display childish behaviour like wetting the bed or sucking their thumb.
Constant physical ailments like headaches or stomachaches.
Trouble showing affection
Exhibit violent behaviour
Always jittery, nervous and watchful
Loss of interest in things they used to enjoy
Unresponsive or numb
How is PTSD Diagnosed in a Child?
Trauma doesn’t necessarily always cause PTSD. PTSD is only diagnosed if the symptoms post the traumatic event happen for more than a month and have an adverse effect on the child’s development. Symptoms can usually be observed within three months for most children. But for some children, they can start even years later. PTSD in a child can be diagnosed by a mental health expert or a child psychiatrist, who will:
Do a childhood PTSD test
Or a mental health evaluation
Treatment for Childhood PTSD
The type of treatment employed will depend on your child’s symptoms, gender, and age. It also depends on the severity of the condition. If your child has PTSD, it can be treated. Diagnosis very early on is the key. Treatment and therapy can help enhance your child’s development and give him relief. There are two ways of treatment:
1. CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)
A child psychiatrist will help a child work on his anxiety so that he can get the skills to manage it better and deal with the memories associated with the traumatic event.
2. Anxiety Medication
The child psychiatrist can prescribe medicines for depression or anxiety which can help your child feel much calmer.
Recovery will depend on the child’s resilience, the support he receives from his family and community and his skills with coping. Recovery times vary but can happen within six months.
What Can Parents Do to Help Children with PTSD?
You as a parent can play an essential role in your child’s recovery from PTSD. Here are some tips:
Take your child’s symptoms, especially anxiety and depression very seriously and seek professional help immediately as suicide might be a significant risk.
Provide support and look for counselling for children and teenagers who have been through trauma.
Be regular with all the appointments made with your child’s counsellor or psychiatrist
Tell others, like your child’s school or friends about his PTSD so that you can collectively make a plan for treatment
Discuss with your child’s doctor on what other types of healthcare he will receive. This may be from a team of counsellors, psychiatrists, therapists, and social workers. Keep informed of his various needs.
Be in touch with other parents whose children have PTSD and take support from your local community.
How Can You Prevent PTSD in Your Kids?
You can employ a few ways to prevent PTSD in your children, which include:
Take an active role to encourage programs on prevention in your local community or school.
Teach your children that it is okay to say no to someone who touches his body without permission or makes him feel uncomfortable.
When to Call the Healthcare Provider
Call your child’s healthcare provider if he displays the following symptoms. It may indicate post-traumatic stress disorder childhood trauma:
If he feels out of control
Hears imaginary voices
Sees imaginary things
Doesn’t eat or sleep for three days continuous
If he feels extreme anxiety, depression, or fear
If he displays anger or violence towards others
If he displays strange behaviour that incites concern among family, friends or teachers.
An important thing to remember is that trauma is not equal to PTSD. A child goes through a traumatic event will not necessarily develop PTSD. If the trauma symptoms remain even after three months of the event, only then is it described as PTSD, a condition which can be treated effectively. So, you can breathe easy!

Dr Vandan H Kumar

A. normally bedwetting is very common during the night time and the child is able to tell you regarding urination during the daytime.
usually this problems improves with increasing age of the child and usually no medicines are given until and unless recommended by the doctor( you can easily wait for ten years of age of the child)
usually treatment of medicines (if started) gives only symptomatic relief and the problem goes away only with increasing age with the strengthening of the muscles of the bladder which control the urination.
steps
decrease the amount of water intake just before going to bed and make the child pass urinex before going to sleep.
also you can wake up the child at around 2 o'clock 3 o'clock and make the child pass urine.
never criticizex the child for this act because this will again aggravate the problem due to stress.
meet your doctor who will tell you more regarding this .
