These 10 Habits are What Helped me Keep my Breastmilk Supply Constant
As a new mom it is natural to feel overwhelmed about things. Learning how to
breastfeed and finding the rhythm with your new born is the important. When you're a
first-time mom, the first four to six weeks of breastfeeding are crucial for success.
Many new moms worry whether they are making enough milk. Truth is most new
mothers make as sufficient breast milk, but these few techniques can help a new mom
maintain a healthy breast milk supply.
Establish your Breastfeeding Technique and Keep Breastfeeding Constantly
And try these simple steps before going for supplements or medication.
Ensure correct latch
A proper latch is the mandatory. It is often due to an unsatisfactory latch that
breastfeeding mothers don't produce as much breast milk as they should.
In case you are not sure if the latch is proper talk to a lactation consultant.
Breast Feed more
A new mother’s body produces milk based on the laws of supply and demand. By
feeding your baby at regular intervals you are telling your body to keep up the supply.
Try feeding the baby every two to three hours. If baby is sleeping for more than 3 hours, then try waking and nursing.
Breast compression
Breast compression helps remove more breast milk when you are using a breast pump.
If your baby tends to fall asleep really soon while nursing, breast compression may help.
Establish a Supplemental nursing system
If your baby gets frustrated while sucking because the flow is less, then feeding them
previously expressed milk may help them learn to suck for longer. I used the Philips
Avent Electric Breast Pump to express breast milk in between direct nursing sessions
When you simulate your breasts in between feeding sessions by pumping milk using a
breast pump, it helps increase the supply.
Using the Philips Avent Electric Breast Pump also helped me establish a
supplemental nursing system. My family members could feed my son the expressed
milk pumped using my Philips Avent Electric Breast Pump.
You can use either an Electric breast pump or a Manual Breast Pump to express. It is
also helps working moms continue their breast feeding journey.
As a working mother, I joined back work after 3 months of Maternity
leave. By establishing a pumping and expressed milk feeding routine I
was able to continue my breast feeding journey even while working
full time.
Simulating and warming your breasts before pumping can help you feel more
comfortable. Use either an Electric or a Manual breast pump, like the Philips Avent
Electric Breast Pump or the Philips Avent Manual Breast Pump to express milk.
Lifestyle changes
Stress, fatigue or consumption of too much caffeine can hinder supply. Make simple
lifestyle changes.
Feed from both sides
Remember to try and alternate the breast you start breast feeding with at each session.
Skin to Skin
Skin to skin contact helps the new born and the mother form a special warm bond. Put
your baby on your chest and cover with a blanket. This is called Kangaroo care.
Eat a well-balanced meal & drink enough fluids
Fuel your body with healthy meals and avoid processed foods like oatmeal, green leafy
vegetables, almonds etc. There are few foods & supplements which may help. Always consult your doctor before trying any of these.
Garlic
Fenugreek
Fennel
Ginger
Spirulina
Believe in yourself & your Baby
Most new moms make more than enough breast milk. If you are breastfeeding regularly
and your baby is showing signs of being well fed, you are doing just fine.
Try not be overwhelmed though that is a natural sentiment for a new mom. If you have doubts talk to a doctor, lactation consultant or a breast feeding support group.
Lastly remember that "Fed is best" as long as your baby is well fed and getting required nourishment, it’s all fine.

Proven Reasons to Use Steam for Cold
Most people propose inhaling steam in the incidence of a cold to open and soothe the blocked nasal passage. But is it worthwhile? While steam inhalation may not cure the infection, it can help bring relief from the irritating symptoms of sinus or cold as the body tries to fight off the infection. Steam therapy involves inhaling hot water vapours which may loosen the mucus present in the nasal channels, throat and lungs thereby easing the discomfort and distress. However, it is essential to learn how to safely use steam for cold lest you suffer an unwanted accident.
Benefits of Steam Inhalation for Cold
Some of the benefits of steam during cold may include the following:
1. Alleviates Soreness
Steam for sinus is particularly beneficial as steam inhalation moisturises irritated, dry nasal and throat routes, thus improving inflammation and pain.
2. Liquefies Mucous Secretions
Taking in steam supposedly softens the mucous discharge, leading to clearer emissions which are relatively easier to eject by blowing the nose or coughing.
3.Respite From Cough
Breathing in steam can assist in relaxing the throat muscles, which in turn may reduce the cough reflex significantly.
4. It Is Totally Natural
Steam therapy is completely natural and does not have any harmful side effects. Steam is simply droplets of water. Our bodies constitute almost 70 per cent water. So, it is a way of replenishing our body’s natural element.
5. It Is Economical
Taking steam therapy hardly costs anything. Even if you invest in a hand-held inhaler or steam vaporiser unit, it is not heavy on the pocket. Plus, these purchases may last you many seasons of cold and flu.
How to Use Steam Therapy for Cough and Cold?
Many people may like to know how to take steam for cough. Here is how you can do it:
What You Will Need
Steam equipment for cold may comprise the following things:
A big bowl
Clean water
A kettle or a stove/microwave to heat up the water
A large towel
Directions
Bring the water to a boil.
Transfer the hot, steaming water into the big bowl carefully and place it on a flat firm surface.
Cover your head completely with the large towel till the back of the head to form a kind of tent.
Bend over the bowl and shut your eyes.
Hold your head at around 8 to 12 inches above the bowl.
Set a timer for about 5 minutes.
Breathe in slowly and deeply via the nose.
You can also run a warm shower and take in the steam. Adding a few drops of essential oils may be a good idea. You can consider using a hand-held portable vapour inhaler as well, for they are convenient and may be carried anywhere you like. Warm steam vaporisers are another great option. They are electrical units which generate a steady stream of hot humid air to lighten cold symptoms. You can run them for about 10 to 12 hours overnight ensuring a constant flow of moistened air which may induce comfort and promote a good night’s sleep.
Precautions to Take While Inhaling Steam
Steam inhalation, if done correctly, is a safe procedure. But you can hurt yourself inadvertently if not careful. There is a possible risk of getting scalded because of the hot water, especially if you happen to knock over the bowl containing the steaming water. Certain precautions to bear in mind while inhaling steam can be:
Ensure that you put the bowl of warm water on a levelled stable surface to negate its chances of falling over.
Do not lean too close over the bowl as you may sustain burn injuries.
Remember to close your eyes during the inhalation process.
Make sure that there are no children or pets around when you are doing the steam therapy through traditional methods to safeguard against any undesirable incidents.
It may be safer to use an electric vaporiser for children rather than the conventional way of using a bowl of warm water.
Refrain from inhaling the steam for more than 10 minutes for every session. You can always repeat the steam therapy two to three times a day to get the desired relief.
In case you are using an electric vaporiser for inhaling the steam, be sure to clean its filter and bucket properly after every use to prevent fungal and bacterial growth.
FAQs
Some frequently asked questions are:
1.Does Inhaling Steam Clear Our Lungs?
Steam inhalation introduces moist, warm air into the lungs which may clear the clogged passages and provide ease from the congestion. Additionally, you can add a couple of drops of eucalyptus oil to the warm water and then inhale to cleanse the lungs naturally.
2.Is It Harmful to Stand Over the Humidifier and Inhale the Vaporous Steam?
No, it is not harmful. Humidifiers are quite safe to use. The main aim of a humidifier is for the sick person to take in the vaporous steam. Simply confirm that the humidifier is clean, as bacteria and moulds tend to flourish in murky, warm water.
3.Is Steam Good for Nose Congestion, but Harmful for the Lungs?
Steam may help ease out some of the nasal congestion. However, chronic nasal congestion may require saline nasal irrigation wherein the excess mucus is flushed out from the nasal cavity. Steam is not likely to harm the lungs. The moist air can help to slacken mucus and lessen congestion and coughing.
4.Does Steam Help a Baby's Cold?
Yes, steam cleaning can help release congestion and dismiss some of the uneasiness of the cold.
Thus, a dose of hot, humidified air can make a considerable difference for sneezing, sniffling cold sufferers. But be careful while using it to protect yourself against the risk of probable burns and injuries owing to tumbled hot water. However, in case you fail to get any relief from steam therapy even after a week or so, it is wise to consult a doctor.

Taking Your Toddler's Help To Sort Laundry
Still wondering how to get your child to help in laundry? These hacks show how toddlers love to waddle through piles of clothes, sort them as per color, and push clothes into the machine too. With encouragement and right learning processes in place, this can be a fun skill.
Toddlers begin learning at home by observing their parents go about their daily chores. Involving themselves in the day-to-day functions of a household bolsters a child's self-relevance and makes them feel wanted, competent, and responsible. Get your kids involved in chores by teaching them day-to-day tasks like looking after their toys, tidying up their room, or getting the laundry done.
How Toddlers can Help with Laundry
1. Start them young
As a parent, you do everything for your child and it's easy to continue doing so. But the question is till when? If you want to turn your child into a responsible adult, then you need to teach her to do simple things on her own, including laundry. So, try to explain why clothes get soiled and need to be washed regularly. A visit to the local mart will introduce her to detergents, clothes brushes, fabric softeners, etc. Once through, grab 2-3 soiled clothes and offer a ‘hand– washing’ demo to make her understand the basic laundry processes in easy-to-perform ways.
2. Make them a Part of the Process
The first step is to teach her to separate white clothes from the darker ones. Tell them to also check pockets for change or tissues, match socks, and close up the zippers of pants and jackets. You can teach your toddler to fold dry laundry by starting with easy clothes like towels and washcloth. Ask your child to help you hang clothes for drying too. Teaching toddlers to help with laundry requires a lot of patience and diligence, but then, it's worth the cause.
3. Make Laundry Fun
Ask your toddler to collect all her doll clothes so that she can wash them. Imagine the excitement when you show her how to hand-wash delicate items in a sink full of soapy water. It's a game your toddler will love to indulge in. While running your kiddo’s bath, add some stuffed toys and ask her to give them a bath too. Hallelujah! Her toys will be clean much before she is ready to be wrapped in her cute fluffy towel.
4. Encourage the Smallest Effort
Appreciate every small effort that your toddler puts in to help you, it'll encourage her to be more helpful. The “I can’t do it” will change to “I will do it” with just a little appreciation from your end. Help her to be more responsible and energetic by getting her involved on all laundry days. Very soon, you will be able to conquer that mountain of dirty clothes at the end of the week, without any hassle.
So, are you ready to spend time with your little one by keeping her busy and teaching her a super useful life skill? Start today! Read more
