How Much Milk Your Baby Should Drink in the First Few Days
As you enter the world of motherhood you try to not leave any stone unturned to be a good mother. You want to give your baby the best possible. Within an hour of birth, you hold your newborn in your arms and begin breastfeeding. Breastfeeding a newborn on the first day is a task. It is a moment full of joy but you are nervous and anxious. Are you doing the thing right? Is your baby comfortable? Are you producing enough milk? A grandmom or a midwife could be good advisers but being equipped with all necessary information makes it easier.
Colostrum: The First Milk
Colostrum is the very first milk that is produced by the mother's body. It ranges from being a clear fluid in some mothers to golden brown and thick in consistency amongst others. For the first few days, the colostrum produced is the most suitable food for the baby’s immature stomach and intestines. It contains more protein and less fat compared to matured milk. Produced in small quantity, it is power packed and enough for the baby as at this stage an hourly feeding is sufficient.
It also has laxative properties that helps the baby by clearing meconium off the intestines (The first tarry stool is called meconium). Colostrum is a packed with antibodies that are crucial for you little one's immunity development. It is as good as giving him his first dose of vaccination. No wonder, it is also known as 'liquid gold'!
Is My Body Producing Enough Milk for My Baby?
You may think you are not producing enough milk. However, it is important to understand that it is just the beginning. Gradually, as the days go by and as your baby continues to suckle, the reflex stimulation will lead to gradual increase in the hormone prolactin that is responsible for producing milk in your body.
The milk-ejection reflex (also known as let-down reflex) is a function of oxytocin hormone released in the brain which causes the milk stored in your breasts to be squeezed down towards your nipples as your baby continues to suckle. This suckling-prolactin-oxytocin-ejection reflex becomes stronger day by day. Also, the hormone Oxytocin is known as happy hormone for the mother. It makes her relax and de-stresses her. Also, complete emptying of the breast acts as a stimulator for more production.
Newborn’s Stomach Size in First Few Days
At birth on day one, the volume of the newborn’s stomach is barely 5-7 ml. It increases to 20-25 ml by mid of the 1st week and 45-60 ml by 1st week. In the first month, the baby can consume 80-150 ml of milk and it gradually increases as the child grows. There is variation in stomach capacity according to the birth weight and subsequent weight gain over a period of time.
How Much Millilitres Of Milk Does A Newborn Need Per Day?
WHO and UNICEF recommend newborn baby feeding on demand. This means there is no specific limit on newborn's milk consumption per day. Feed your baby whenever and how much ever times the baby wants. Your baby will show signs and give you cues when they are full and do not wish to be fed further. The table below serves as a general guide to how much milk does a baby need per day. Newborn milk intake being highly variable, this is just a rough guide.

When Should You Feed Your Baby?
As discussed, newborn baby feeding should be on demand starting within 1 hour of delivery. You should continue doing so throughout the night. Your baby will give you signs, called as feeding cues, when hungry. Identify these early and begin feeding.
Early Feeding Cues:
The baby will start stirring
The baby will open his mouth and turn head seeking your breasts (called as rooting)
Mid / Active Baby Hunger Cues:
Increase in the movements
Stretching
Sucking it’s own fist and the fingers.
Late Baby Hunger Cues: (at this stage it is difficult to feed the baby and the feed may not be satisfactory)
Crying
Pink-coloured skin
Excessive physical movements.
You must always aim to calm your baby first and then consider feeding him if he exhibits late hunger cues. Offer skin-to-skin contact and try to feed by snuggling him close to your breasts.
How Often Should You Feed Your Newborn Baby?
In the early days when the quantity of milk produced is less, the baby will feed every 1 hour. As the child grows, the quantity of milk intake per feed increases and the number of feeds per day decreases. So, how much milk should a newborn drink each feed depends on how frequent is the feeding. On an average, a baby feeds 8-12 times per day. As mentioned above, look for the feeding cues and you will know it is breastfeeding time for newborn.
How Long Should You Feed Your Baby?
There are no guidelines on how long should a baby be breastfed. Your baby is your best guide. After adequate feeding, the baby will stop suckling, push the nipple away, fall asleep or become drowsy. If the baby does not want to sleep, he will look calm, playful and satisfied. You may try to offer the other breast and continue feeding if the baby is accepting the feed.
Signs Showing Your Baby Is Getting Enough Milk
A calm, quiet, playful baby indicates that he is well fed. If not, he will show signs of hunger: the feeding cues. In fact, a baby that is not satisfied will not let you be in peace.
There will be a steady and adequate weight gain after 2 weeks. Despite sufficient feeding, babies tend to lose some weight in the first 2 weeks and it is normal.
There should be 2-3 soiled nappies in the first 2 days. There will be an increase in these nappies to 6 or more per day after the 1st week. Also he colour of baby's urine is a good indicator. Pale yellow urine indicates that he is well fed.
The baby will pass stools at least 2-3 times per day (soft yellow stools) if adequately fed (only 1-2 stools per day in first few days).
Weighing the baby before and after meals gives a gross estimation of the quantity of milk consumed.
In some circumstances, the mother may not be producing sufficient milk (Stress, Sheehan syndrome, twins) or the baby may not able to suck the milk adequately (premature baby, sick baby). The rooting and suckling reflex is not well developed in the premature babies. So, despite adequate frequency of feeding, the baby does not show signs of being well fed. In such situations your baby might need additional formula milk or expressed breast milk until enough milk is produced.
Also, it is important for the mother to take good care of nipples apart from keeping them clean. The nipple fissures make the breastfeeding painful and can affect the milk production. Wash the nipples with water and mild soap, before and after feeding. Use nipple shield for the fissures to heal. Do not continue feeding on the affected side until fissures heal. Consult your healthcare provider if it does not heal in 24-48 hours.

Do You and Your Child Have Compatible Sun-Signs? Find Out How This Affects Parenting!
Your zodiac can have a huge impact on your life and relationships. But, did you know that your stars and planetary positions can also determine what kind of a parent you are and how compatible you will be with your child?
Most of us have been intrigued by what our future holds for us. Many of us take to checking the astrology column in the newspaper daily. How the day/week/month/life will go is a matter of interest for us all the time and that can never grow old. Just like our planets and stars influence our romantic relationships, astrology for kids can tell us a lot about how compatible we are with our little one!
Always wondered why your child never listens to you, or in case he/she is younger, why they never stop crying when you pick them up? Well, maybe the fault is in your stars!
What's Your Rashee?
To know more about parent child horoscope compatibility, you need to first be aware of which category your zodiac falls under, and more importantly, what your zodiac actually is.
There are primarily 4 elements in the zodiac under which each zodiac sign falls, according to the temperament. These are Water, Earth, Fire and Air. The 12 signs are clubbed in a group of 3 and thereafter every group categorically belongs to a particular element. To know which element your zodiac falls under, take a look.
Baby Astrology Compatibility With Parent
Compatibility is an important factor to assess when people consider zodiac study and seek knowledge. Not just romantic relationships, the relationship between you and your little one can also be understood a little better with the help of astrology. Let’s see what zodiac signs for kids and moms reveal about their relationship and life together!
1. If You Belong to a FIRE Sign (Aries, Leo & Sagittarius)
A mother belonging to the fire element is usually passionate, creative and eternally youthful. She is always on the move and is certainly every child’s role model when it comes to chasing dreams. Although she is affectionate, she may not be the super cuddly or attentive kinds. But she is the one who will take her kids out for day adventures and teach them the importance of independence and individuality. Fire element moms have the inherent quality of leadership. However, the only flipside to belonging to this element is that you can be restless and busy and that can sometimes instil a negative feeling in the hearts of your kids as they grow up.
Compatibility Level (If your child belongs to the same element – Aries, Leo & Sagittarius) Since both of you belong to the same element, your qualities, likings and preferences will match to a great extent. You are mostly full of life and enjoy the independence of doing things on your own. Your child will also be vivacious and enthusiastic to take up things and try out new adventures. Together you both are risk takers and born leaders. It's a really nice combination!
Compatibility Level (If your child does not belong to the same element) Your child may appreciate and admire your ambition, but your personality can sometimes seem slightly overwhelming to them. Rest assured, you and your child are going to be a mother-kid duo having endless fun! Your words of wisdom will drive them and backing will always push them. You will always be the light in their life, and when things get low, you'll lift their spirits up! BFFs for life!
2. If You belong to an EARTH Sign (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)
Dependable and responsible are the two adjectives that perfectly describe an Earth mom. They are always protective and want nothing but the best for their little humans. These moms are the ones who emphasize on values, ethics and manners strongly and impart healthy and good living values to their children. Family and tradition are as important as family vacations. They sometimes may seem slightly too concerned with their outer appearance. But it is only because they take immense delight in guiding their kids towards a better lifestyle and moulding them into responsible human beings.
Compatibility Level (If your child belongs to the same element – Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) It is 'like mother, like child' concept here - homeliness and traditions are tops! Full marks on the parenting compatibility test as far as stability in your relationship with your child is concerned. Your personality traits will always match and that's a huge benefit.
Compatibility Level (If your child does not belong to the same element) If your child belongs to a fire sign, chances are that you both may have personality conflicts. You may have a text book approach of doing things the traditional way, but your fire sign baby is always looking to explore and go on an adventure.
If you have a water baby, they are your friends for life. They will always confide in you and trust you with the best advice. The first reaction to any important situation in their life would be 'I need to tell mom about this'! That already says a lot!You may be all about traditions, but your baby who belongs to the air sign would just want to flow and that can sometimes cause conflicts between the two of you. However, they will always be in awe of you and appreciate endlessly all the efforts and love you put in bringing them up. You may be at odds at times, but will love each other immensely.
3. If You belong to a WATER Sign (Cancer, Scorpio & Pisces)
If you belong to the water sign, don't be surprised if they ever call you a 'super mom'! A mom from this sign is the definition of unconditional love and compassion - always nurturing and full of every maternal trait possible! She has an innate understanding of emotions and is always very empathetic. These moms are (or always wish to be) extremely involved in their kid's life - right from the first words to the first exam, they want to be involved in every process. However, since such moms are so emotional, they can be quite unpredictable at times too. Her babies are her most prized possessions.
Compatibility Level (If your child belongs to the same element – Cancer, Scorpio & Pisces) It is always a nice feeling to share the same kinds of emotions and feelings with your child when you belong to the same sign. The compatibility level is extreme and so is the comfort level between a water sign mom and her bub. You both can discuss emotions together and will also love watching the same TV shows and listening to the same music. However, since you both can be quite sensitive about things, misunderstandings can occur occasionally.
Compatibility Level (If your child does not belong to the same element) Your baby belonging to the fire sign is free spirited whereas you may always be slightly determined to follow one particular approach. But that does not mean you will not smother your baby with all the love in the world and they will love you unconditionally too! They may get a sense that you are trying to control them, but they soon do understand that you just want to stay connected. Earth kids and water moms is a heavenly match! Your bub is also a little bit of a perfectionist and emotes well. You both will bond over family and tradition, but the best part about your relationship would be that as a mother you will always keep your little one grounded. Water and air can take each other for granted, therefore it is very important to always acknowledge each other's presence and value in life. Air sign kids like to 'do' rather than say how they feel, whereas water sign mums are all about expressions.
4. If You belong to an AIR Sign (Gemini, Libra & Aquarius)
Playful and chirpy would best describe an air sign mum. These are the fun moms of the zodiac and are extremely open minded and forward-thinking. They also value intellectual conversations and believe in self-exploration. The bed time stories they tell their kids are from their own life and perhaps their kids also feel they are the best kind of human beings! Moms belonging to the air sign are the ones who listen, learn, and never judge anyone for trying something new. They let their little ones make their own mistakes but will always guide them on the way.
Compatibility Level (If your child belongs to the same element – Gemini, Libra & Aquarius) This mother-kid duo is the most chilled out one. You are both easy going and don't engage in making a fuss out of anything. Because you both get each other perfectly well, it is always easy to communicate.
Compatibility Level (If your child does not belong to the same element)An air mom is the wind beneath a fire child's wings. Literally the BFFs, you and your child just perfectly get each other. She may not solve her kids’ problems entirely, but one can trust her with the best advice that will definitely help.Well, here is a slight concern, your earth kid's personality may particularly not match with yours and that can cause a certain level of discomfort in the relationship. There might be strange dynamic between the two of you, however you will definitely be there for each other when required. You will both grow together as people, no matter how tough the lessons may seem. Water sign kids are highly emotional, but that does not mean that their air sign mums will always be ‘persuaded’ because of this! They will teach their kids to pull their socks up and move on instead of feeling bad and regretting something that happened in the past. Fundamentally, these two signs have a varied personality, but work well when required.
Now, instead of just reading your own horoscope every morning, make sure you check your little one's too. After all, you both are a team that sticks together for a lifetime! Read more

Parents, Keep These Winter Essentials Handy Before It Gets Cold
No matter how much adults enjoy the cold season, winter is no cakewalk for newborns. When it comes to newborns and toddlers, the stakes get high. Since they are vulnerable to seasonal changes, it becomes important for parents to go the extra mile to keep their babies protected from harsh winter.
Babies are easily susceptible to several winter ailments like cough and cold. But, worry not. We can assure you that keeping these basic winters essentials handy will help your little one tackle mild winter ailments and make your visits to the doctor less frequent.
9 Important Winter Must-Haves for Babies and Toddlers
Low temperatures, dry air, and cold breeze are common in winter. As a parent, you can stay prepared with these nine winter essentials to protect your baby from winter ailments. Without any further ado, let’s dive in!
1. Thermometers
Infrequent temperature can quickly trigger viral infections, runny noses, and fevers in babies. If you have a baby below the age of 5, we recommend keeping a good-quality thermometer in your medicine cabinet. Rectal or oral thermometers are commonly used thermometers that often provide accurate readings. A thermometer will not only give you temperature readings right away but will also help in detecting symptoms earlier and treating them before they could get any worse.
2. Nasal Aspirators
Mucus often finds an easy way into a baby’s nose during winters and can lead to sleepless nights. A nasal aspirator is a recommended item for your medicine pantry if your baby suffers from congestion. It will help in removing the blockage and allow easy breathing. If you have any doubt, do consult your baby’s paediatrician before using this product.
3. Cold Relief Balms
Nights get colder than days in winters, which can cause an untimely blocked nose and cough in your baby. Keeping cold relief balms like doctor-prescribed menthol balms helps whenever the temperature drops. You can rub some balm on your child’s chest and back right before you tuck him in the bed. It will provide him relief from the congestion and contribute to sound sleep.
There are several cold relief balms available but make sure your buy one that is suitable for babies or prescribed by a doctor.
4. Medicine Droppers
Giving medicine to little babies can be an extremely difficult task. Since they can’t swallow tablets and usually mess up taking liquid medicine by spilling it all over them, a medicine dropper aids in saving time and effort. The simple design of a medicine dropper helps parents to measure the required dose for their babies accurately and creates no mess or waste. Hence, it is a must-have item in your medicine cabinet.
5. Anti-Colic Tummy Roll-on
Babies cry a lot whenever they suffer from indigestion, gastric problems, constipation, or colic. If you plan to travel with your baby or if he suffers from frequent gas pains, you may want to consider keeping an anti-colic tummy roll-on with you. It soothes stomach pain and provides relief from bloating. The tummy roll-ons are very travel-friendly and can be easily carried in bags or purses.
6. Cotton Buds and Pads
A baby’s skin is still in the development phase and very delicate. With the arrival of the winter season, the soft skin of babies starts to get dry and chapped. Now because it is the cold season, you would not want to clean up your baby with water every time, as he might catch a cold. Thus, cotton buds or pads that are made with 100% cotton can be used to clean in between your tiny tot’s fingers, toes, the outer ear, and other delicate creases. You can look for cotton buds made of paper sticks instead of plastic and those that have 100% cotton tips.
7. Vaporisers
Cold temperatures, recirculated dry air, and lack of humidity in the atmosphere can cause many winter ailments, like cough, congestion, and sore throat in your baby. In this case, a vaporiser is a great item for increasing the humidity of the air. It works by turning the water into steam, humidifying the air, and helping in alleviating the cold. The moist air created by a vaporiser can help the mucus to loosen up and open up your child’s blocked nose and help him breathe easily.
8. Nebulisers
A nebuliser is another great must-have for this winter. It is often recommended by a doctor if a child has swollen airways, lung infection, or respiratory diseases, like asthma and cystic fibrosis. It works by infusing medicine into the water and offering pressurised air into the lungs of the baby through the liquid. You can get in touch with your baby’s paediatrician to know more about this and if it is necessary for your kid.
9. Pulse Oximeters
The drop in the temperature during the winter season can decrease the oxygen level in babies suffering from respiratory or cardiovascular conditions. Hence, it is important to keep pulse oximeters handy and check for your baby’s pulse whenever he suffers from fever or cold. It effectively monitors the oxygen saturation level in the blood and helps in detecting the immediate risk like sleeping accidents and SIDS. A consultation with your baby’s paediatrician before purchasing the pulse oximeter will be beneficial.
All these above-mentioned items are certain to make you and your baby’s winter season go smoothly. It is also important to buy products that are renowned for their high-quality standards and maintain proper hygiene before and while using these items. Now that you know more about what to stock up for your baby’s wellbeing, we are sure you will be ready to combat this chilly winter season.

How to Improve Your Child's Handwriting
Although the learning techniques in classrooms have changed over the decades, old-fashioned writing is still an important skill that students need to learn to do their assignments and homework. Good handwriting ensures better scores in exams as the answers are more legible. Even in the digital-keyboard age, chirography is still an important mode of expression and communication. Continue reading for some handwriting tips for students that can help them write better.
9 Effective Tips on How to Improve Handwriting for Kids
Here are some effective tips to improve handwriting for kids:
1. Recognize the Problem
Before you can formulate a plan to improve your child’s handwriting, figure out what it is that is causing them to write badly. It could be a whole list starting with the improper posture of sitting, improper holding of the pencil, poor hand-to eye-co-ordination or medical problems such as ADD or ADHD that stops them from sitting still. If it is a medical problem, they need to be treated for it first before getting down improving their handwriting.
2. Build Motor Skills
Writing is primarily fine control of the muscle in the hands and arm, which in turn, control the wrist and fingers. Activities and games involving fine movement such as stringing beads, games with rice, beans and other small objects build motor skills in the children. Finer control of the muscles helps them to grip their pencil better and move it accurately to write words. Activities such as finger painting are also a great exercise to hone motor skills.
3. Ensure the Pencil is Grasped Correctly
Getting a good grip on the pencil is equally important to learn how to write well. This needs to be taught in their early formative years so that their handwriting improves steadily over time. Here are some tips to hold the pencil properly:
The pencil should be held firmly but not too tight. As they get better, they can learn to relax and grip the pencil more gently.
A good way to steady the pencil is to hold it with the thumb and the index finger while it rests on the middle finger below.
The pencil should be held in such a way that it rests on the bridge between the thumb and the index finger.
A pencil grip can be used to improve the grip.
4. Relax the Pressure and Grip
Observe them as they write. If you see that they are gripping the pencil too tightly, tell them to relax a little bit. A tight grip puts pressure on the fingers and tires them out leading to pain; it also cramps out their muscles making their handwriting sloppy. How much pressure they put into words also contributes to this. If you notice impressions on the following pages of the book, they are bearing down too hard on their pencil.
5. Practice Writing Aalphabets and Words
Good handwriting constitutes getting the proportions of letters right. Children need to know how to manage the size of capital and lower-case letters. This can be done using four-line practice books in the beginning and then followed by two-line books as they get better. Give them more writing exercises for alphabets that they write poorly so they can learn to write better.
6. Go Slow and Do Not Pressurize Them
It helps to take it slow and steady in the beginning to get their handwriting good. Let the child write at a pace they are comfortable with and do not rush them to write faster. It takes time to build the muscle memory to write well and write fast, so do not pressurize them into improving faster. They cannot get better overnight, so scolding them isn’t productive. If they feel stressed, they may not enjoy the activity or get worse at it eventually. Appreciating their efforts and incremental improvements, on the other hand, encourages them to do better.
7. Offer a Favourable Environment
Let the kids write in a proper seated position where they are able to freely move their arms and shoulders. Writing should always be practised in a sitting position on a proper study table. They should not write lying down or sit on a couch while watching TV. Also, increase their reading time. Giving them books with neatly printed letters in a good font can inspire them to write better.
8. Provide Good Writing Tools
Part of teaching kids handwriting is offering them good writing tools. Some of them are as follows:
A good lined paper that takes the pencil score well is important. The quality of the paper determines how well they can write on it. The surface must offer good friction to write on and handle it without too much indentation or tearing.
The right-sized pencil is a must. Some kids may not be comfortable holding jumbo sized ones, therefore, try golf pencils that are smaller and easier to grip. Also, observe what quality of the lead your child is comfortable with. Leads such as HB are medium ranged, and 2B is softer.
Pencil grip can be used to aid them to hold the pencil firmly as they write.
9. Make It Fun
Since the practice of chirography can be boring for children, adding a little fun can make them more enthusiastic about writing. Here are a few tips:
Get them fun accessories that they like such as coloured pencils, brightly coloured books that look attractive, or pencil toppers.
Play drawing games that teach them proper grip and coordination while building dexterity and posture.
Making lists such as what you need to buy for shopping, places you need to visit or the names of friends they want to invite to their birthday party is a good way to encourage them to write.
With practice and persistence, good handwriting can be honed in children over time.

Everything You Need to Know about Periods, Prenatal, Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
A baby fills a place in your heart that you never knew was empty. Being a mother of a 9-month-old baby girl has taught me so many beautiful things that I haven't known before. Being pregnant with my baby and now having her in my arms is the most surreal thing and every mother feels the same with their babies. Having a healthy lifestyle and habits would help in conceiving faster. I have seen many women (including myself) conceiving naturally without trying for a long time. We will discuss a few habits and routines here.
Know your menstrual cycle whether it is a 28 day or a 35-day cycle. We have so many applications available over Google Play store Apple store. Period calendar is the best one. Note down the first day of your period. From the 10th day of your period, you have chances to conceive. Ovulation day is the day where egg releases from one of the ovaries. This is the best time to have sex to conceive faster. This day generally falls on the 14th day if you are having a 28-day cycle.
Every woman who wants to have babies should have prenatals and regular checkups with a gynaecologist. Quit drinking and smoking as well. The doctor would suggest prenatals because it is very important for the development of a foetus. Prenatals are supplements that you take before pregnancy. These supplements are also a must during and after pregnancy. You can also take them in the natural form if you take green leafy vegetables, milk and non-vegetarian foods like meat.
The symptoms of pregnancy vary from person to person. The first and foremost is missing your period. If your period does not turn up even after a week, it is a good time to go see the doctor to confirm the pregnancy. Nausea, hunger, tiredness are other symptoms.
Once you are pregnant, quit smoking and drinking completely. Have a healthy routine. Cut down on the intake of caffeine which is present in chocolates and coffee. Caffeine takes time to digest for both mom and foetus. Digestion is slower with each passing day during pregnancy.
Staying away from traffic and public places is best suggested to avoid air pollution. Staying indoors, yoga, meditation, music and walking will greatly help with mental health during pregnancy.
Regular checkups and scans are very important to know the growth of your baby and your health. Amniotic sac is where the baby lives in the womb. Some moms have a problem where the levels of amniotic fluid decrease which is dangerous for the survival of the foetus. You can know the levels of amniotic fluid only through scans and doctors will suggest the best solution based on the levels.
From day one, have this one thing on your mind regardless of whether you are a working professional or a stay-at home mom- to exclusively breastfeed your baby. Please don't use readily available powders in the market. Breastfeeding helps with baby's immunity and it also develops a strong bond between you and your baby. Always look at your baby when you are nursing. Baby will look at you and that is how they start trusting you more with each passing day.
After childbirth, take supplements for the next six months to be healthy. Because post childbirth, the body needs to come back to the previous state and it takes time and energy to look after yourself and the baby.
Don't forget to make memorable moments and take pictures to show your baby. Let them know that you are very happy to have them.
I am a 26-year-old happy wife and mom. Have a happy and safe pregnancy and a wonderful baby.

A. Typically, your bump becomes noticeable during your second trimester. Between 16-20 weeks, your body will start showing your baby's growth. For some women, their bump may not be noticeable until the end of the second trimester and even into the third trimester. The second trimester starts in the fourth month.
