Sub Types
Alpha and Beta thalassemia have been further categorized into two sub-categories:
Thalassemia Minor
When the defected genes are inherited or transferred only from a single parent, then you may have a condition called thalassemia minor. People who have this condition are called the carrier of the disease. If you have this condition you may not have any health complications, but you may pass this defected gene to your baby.
Thalassemia Major
When the defected genes are inherited from both the parents, then it may lead to a life-threatening condition called beta thalassemia major. Thalassemia major causes serious complications in unborn babies. Most babies with alpha thalassemia major do not make it up to the pregnancy or birth. Beta thalassemia major is more common in babies and children than alpha thalassemia major.
What Causes Thalassemia in Pregnancy?
You may have thalassemia in pregnancy in following cases:
You may inherit the defective gene from either of your parents.

How To Know If You Have Thalassemia?

Your doctor may do foetal blood sampling. This test may be done around eighteen to twenty-one weeks of pregnancy. The blood for the umbilical cord is taken for testing.
In a case where the unborn baby is diagnosed with alpha thalassemia major, there are very dim chances of survival. The doctor may recommend terminating the pregnancy as the baby may not sustain till delivery or birth.
How Does Thalassemia Affect Pregnancy and Baby's Birth?
If you have thalassemia, you will be closely monitored by your midwife and doctor throughout your pregnancy. Your doctor may prescribe you folic acid as it would reduce the risk of your baby getting neural tube defects (spina bifida). The dosage may vary according to your condition.
In case you are beta thalassemia minor, your doctor may keep a regular tab on your iron levels in the body. You may be prescribed iron tablets to replenish the body’s iron requirement in pregnancy.

You may be advised for blood transfusion

Will Your Baby Have Thalassemia?
Here’s how you will know if your baby will have thalassemia or not:
If you or your spouse is thalassemia minor: There are equal chances of your baby either inheriting your defected genes or your baby may not inherit the defected genes at all. However, your baby will not be thalassemia major in this case.
If you and your spouse both are thalassemia minor: The chances are one in four, that your baby does not inherit the defected genes at all. Though your baby has the same amount of chances to be born with thalassemia major. However, the chances are one in two that your baby is born with thalassemia minor.

How Much is Too Much Exactly?
Be it in terms of any of the following, how do you know what is best or the right approach to that challenge?
Being lenient or strict, or a blend of two
Breastfeeding the baby or trying to wean it off
Making them learn things through play or teaching the old-school way
Meal portions and a balanced diet
Trying to safeguard them from the ills & fears of the unknown (especially with the 'good touch, bad touch' and to always be around parents for safety)
Being a helicopter mom, because you are assured that your child is safe & enjoying the moment
Getting worked up by comparing the milestones achieved & yet to be accomplished by your kid
Feeling anxious about their food habits, appetite, balanced diet
Crying your heart out if the little one is in pain or suffering, yet standing tall in front of family
Changing all your routines to prioritize the lives of your children
I always say, there should be a balance of everything in life because after all, we are the role models for our children (for a good amount of time if not till eternity).
We should not stifle them, instead, we should lead such a life where we are able to create an atmosphere and nurture them with thoughts like these:
It's ok to let go (sometimes).
It's not our responsibility to correct every wrongdoing of others.
If you haven't aced something, maybe you need to practice it more. Practice makes a person perfect if the dreams are realistic and we need to teach this no matter how hard it is.
However, we need not show all our emotions of panic or angst when our child doesn't meet our expectations or cry ourselves when dropping them to school or college for the first time. Nor should we try to hide all our emotions, because sometimes they need warmth and at the same time they need strength too.
Parenting teaches us a lot, not just about ourselves but our spouse and the little being we brought to this world.
So, balance out everything, don't burden anyone with your expectations, but yes, make the people around you learn to differentiate between good and bad, reality and delusions. Don't stress out about some small unaccomplished victory of your child, because he might be acing things other children can't do yet (and you might have missed out on noticing it because you were too busy teaching him the ABC's because your neighbour's 2-year-old daughter knows all the alphabets).

Please give semi solid food items like banana and mashed potatoes and mashed apples to the baby. Also give suji kheer and daal paani to the baby. Continue giving formula milk to the baby. You can also give mashed idli to the baby. Masaage baby legs with BabyHug coconut oil.
