Internet Safety Tips for kids
This is the digital age where information is at everybody’s fingertips. Even young children these days have access to the internet via smartphones and tablets. They need to be made aware of the dangers of the internet and taught how to protect themselves from various online threats.
The internet is used by children as young as 5-year-olds these days. Kids go online to play games, watch movies or cartoons, interact with their peers on social media, and to do research for homework assignments or school projects. However, they may not be aware of the various dangers of the internet. Children have to be educated about online threats and internet safety. Speaking openly with them is very important. Parental supervision is also essential.
Importance of Internet safety for Children
Children are very thrilled about going online to browse shopping sites, use social media, watch movies or do research for educational purposes. However, simple mistakes online can have dangerous repercussions.
Certain search terms may lead to explicit content, and children could get duped by online marketing or phishing scams. Kids may become victims of cyber bullies, identity thieves, paedophiles or even kidnappers. One wrong click on a pop-up could cause malware to download onto the device. It is, thus, very important to teach your kids about internet safety and ensure that their time online is supervised by an adult.
Internet Safety Tips for Children
Parents can make sure their children are safe while browsing online using the following tips:
1. Do Not Allow Kids to Browse Alone
Set a rule that the child should use the electronic device for browsing in the living room or in the presence of an adult. This way, the adults can ensure that the child does not view unsuitable content online, and also supervise the child’s online activities.
2. Teach Kids About Protecting Their Privacy
Teach your kids never to share personal information such as address, phone numbers, names, personal email addresses, siblings’ details, parents’ work details etc. without the permission of parents.
3. Never Agree to Meet Online Friends
Teach the kids that the internet provides anonymity, and their online friends may not really be who they say they are. It is dangerous to go meet online friends as they could turn out to be paedophiles or kidnappers. Keep track of your kids’ online friends and report suspicious activities or people online to your local cyber-crime department.
4. Instruct Your Child Never to Click on Pop-ups or Subscribe to E-newsletters
Clicking on pop-ups or ads could result in malware or viruses being downloaded into the device. They could also be an online scam to gather the user’s personal details. E-newsletters demand too many personal details, and it is unsafe for children to give out such details online. Teach your kids to avoid clicking on suspicious email attachments, pop-ups, ads and e-newsletters.
5. Use a Strong Password
Teach the kids the importance of using strong passwords online and why they should never disclose passwords to anyone. Passwords are tougher to crack if they are at least eight characters long, contain at least one number, one special character, one lower-case letter and one upper-case letter.
6. Set a Time Rule
Set a specific time limit for online activities of your children. Whether it is for entertainment purposes or educational reasons, it is better to limit kids’ time online. Discuss this with your children and agree on a set time limit per day.
7. Monitor What your Kids Post Online
Teach your children that once something is on the internet, it can never be deleted. Therefore, they should be very careful about what they post online. For example, teenagers may post pictures of themselves online or comment on social media. Make sure you monitor this and if you think a picture or post is inappropriate, ensure that it is taken down or never posted in the first place. Being open with your children and explaining your reasons will avoid conflict and make sure your children are cooperative.
8. Use Reliable Security Software
Make sure you install reliable security software on your device to prevent viruses, malware or spyware and ensure that you have firewalls turned on to prevent pop-ups and hackers. There are also several online protection tools that help you control your kids’ access to inappropriate content. Use these tools to ensure your child’s safety.
9. Do Not Allow Kids to Shop Online Unsupervised
Children should never be allowed to shop online unsupervised. They could enter credit card details on an unsecured website, causing vital financial data to fall into the hand of cybercriminals.
10. Privacy Settings
Teach your kids about the importance of using privacy settings on social media such as Facebook or Instagram. Also, teach them never to click on suspicious links and to always log out before going offline.
Word of Caution
Cyber safety for kids is of paramount importance. You need to set kids’ rules for online safety. Make sure your children do not interact with unknown people on social media or on online forums or chat rooms. These are places that child predators and cyber bullies frequent. Paedophiles often pose as children on social media and in chat rooms and encourage children to call or come and meet them. Make sure you warn your kids of such dangers and teach them never to call strangers or agree to meet anyone in person.
Invest in good online protection tools to track your children’s online activities and eliminate online threats. Internet security for kids is worth the investment. For younger children, encourage them to use child-friendly options such as Kiddle instead of Google search or YouTube Kids instead of regular YouTube.
Talk openly with your teenagers about the various online threats and tell them that you will be monitoring their activities in order to ensure their safety. Teach teenagers the dangers of posting their exact location online. Warn them about the dangers of unwelcome contacts online. This includes stalking, bullying, harassment, and grooming (making online friends for purposes of later sexual contact). Encourage teenagers to approach you if they encounter something online that makes them uncomfortable. Limit the time children spend online and prompt them to spend more time in the real world.
Although the internet is a plethora of information and entertainment, there are very real dangers lurking there. Internet protection for kids is imperative these days. There have been several incidents where lack of online safety led to situations where children were in serious danger. Open communication is the key to online safety, especially with teenagers who are secretive and value privacy. Young children should have limited access to the internet and should always be supervised. Children should take advantage of the abundant information the internet offers without exposing themselves to danger. Parents can ensure this by being aware of their kids’ online activities and educating them about the dangers of the internet.

This kind of behaviour usually results from suppressed emotions or feelings. So, if you find your kiddo or toddler acting out, it may be your child’s unintended cry for help. Many reasons may evoke such personality or behavioural traits in kids and teenagers, and as a parent, you may want the reasons behind the same.
Reasons Why Child is Acting Out
Before you look for the solutions to rectify or amend your child’s erratic behaviour, it is imperative to go to the root cause of it. Here we have short-listed some of the reasons that may make your child behave in this manner:
1. Untreated Learning Disability
Sometimes children may suffer from learning disabilities. In most cases the parents may be able to identify such issues, however, in situations where such problems remain untreated or undiagnosed, it may hamper the child’s ability to perform various tasks. Inability to do so may give birth to acting out behaviour.
2. To Impress Friends or Peers
Sometimes a child may exhibit such nasty personality traits only to gain their friends’ attention or to overcome any kind of neglect. Whatever may be the reason, if a child is acting out to get attention, it is vital to nip it in the bud or else the child may continue to do this so that he may grab the attention of his friends.
3. Seek the Attention of the Adults
It is not only their friends’, but sometimes children may act out to gain the attention of the adults too. Most of the times the children may opt for this resort because the positive resort to gain attention did not work well. Therefore, they may unleash their negative streak and show this kind of behaviour.
4. To Gain Power and Control
Sometimes the sheer aim for such behaviour could be to gain power and control of a situation. This happens when a child feels that he lacks power and control. He may express this kind of attitude to show that he in control of the situation.
5. Agitation Due to Some other Factors
Sometimes children may behave all grumpy and fussy because something may be bothering them. This could be something that may be going with their health for example; they may feel bloated or gassy. On the other hand, children may feel uncomfortable due to tight clothing, uncomfortable shoes and various such factors.
6. Unable to Express
Young children may often find it difficult to express themselves, especially because they lack proper vocabulary. Inability to put across their feelings and emotions may frustrate them, and thus he may showcase such behavioural traits.
7. In Response to Certain Situation
Many times such kind of behaviour comes into light when the child is in a particular type of situation or as a response to an upsetting situation. Therefore, a child acting out after starting kindergarten could be a response to separation anxiety, child acting out at school but not at home could be because of peer pressure or being bullied at school, child acting out because of divorce could be due to emotional stress, child acting out after visitation could be because of resentment and so on.
8. Undiagnosed Mental Disability or Condition
In some cases, children may be exhibiting this kind of behaviour due to some underlying mental disorder such as autism, OCD or obsessive-compulsive disorder, ADHD or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or anxiety disorders.
9. As a Response to Over-Controlling
When children are nurtured in an overly protective and controlling environment, they may feel suppressed. This kind of behavioural traits may be their way of revolting against the control of their parents and showing their resentment.
10. It May Be Plain Curiosity
We all know that children are super curious and want to try out everything under the sun. Therefore, sometimes a child may be behaving erratically or unacceptably just to test the boundaries with the parents and to see up to what extent he can take it.
Symptoms of Child Acting Out
Most children behave erratically once in a while, so how will you be able to establish that your kiddo is acting out. Well, here are some symptoms that may help you to find out if your child exhibits the following traits on a regular basis:
Lying
Stealing
Damaging stuff
Harming others (people or pets)
Self-harm
Poor academic performance
Frequent temper tantrums
Drinking, smoking or drugs
How to Discover the Cause of Acting Out Before Treatment?
Many reasons may make your child behave a certain way. It will not be a wise thing just to put a tag on the child saying ‘he is a bad child’. Such kinds of behaviour have their cause deeply rooted in the child’s emotions, feelings, loneliness or fears. So, simply shunning a child’s behaviour by labelling him as a ‘naughty child’ or a ‘spoilt child’ may further aggravate the situation than putting an end to it. It is important to establish the cause and then look for ways to cure the behaviour.
Ways to Respond When Your Child is Acting Out
Following are some ways of responding when your child shows this kind of behaviour:
1. Be Positive
Do not scold, punish or mock your child for his behaviour. On the other hand, whenever your child behaves well, you should praise and reward him. This way he will understand what is expected of him.
2. Be Consistent and Clear With Your Expectation
It is essential to explain rules and regulations to the children. Once they are aware of it, it is easier for them to follow. They may also understand the implications and consequences for not abiding the rules.
3. It Is Not Always About You
Your child may be acting all weird and erratic, and it may be a hurtful sight, but it is important to understand that your child’s behaviour, anger and resentment may not always be because of you. It is important to talk to your child and know the cause.
4. Be Calm
When the child acts all hyper and unreasonable, it is essential that you do not opt for the same path. When you are calm and composed, you will be able to handle the situation better and help your child too.
When to See the Doctor
You will know for sure when the situation may not be in your control. If you are not able to manage your child’s tantrums or your child’s symptoms are becoming worse, you must seek medical help. Sometimes a child’s behavioural traits may not only be affecting the child, but it may be affecting the siblings or the entire family, you must seek the help of a professional or a child psychologist.
Identifying the root cause of the problem is crucial. Only then, it will be possible to correct any such behavioural problems.

Many times, prenatal diagnosis can lead to early detection of Cystic Fibrosis. Though during the pregnancy period, the condition may get worse and cause respiratory or other symptoms. However, it is possible to get pregnant and carry the baby to its term. Read this article to know the pregnancy outcomes for a mother with Cystic Fibrosis and how to manage pregnancy health with a disciplined lifestyle and routine.
What Is Cystic Fibrosis?
Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic illness that can affect multiple or all organs of the body. It often causes digestion issues, lung infections leading to respiratory failure. The inherited disease makes the body produce an abnormal quantity of thick and sticky mucus built up in the lungs and pancreas, affecting the respiratory system, pancreas, digestive system, liver, and intestines. The accumulation of mucus causes harmful bacteria to grow in the body.
There is no permanent cure for this disease, however with the improved advancement in treatment, the life expectancy of such patients continues to increase, including women who are getting into the world of motherhood.
What Causes Cystic Fibrosis
Cystic Fibrosis is inherited genetically. Thus it gets passed on from parents to children through genes. It is caused by the mutation in a gene known as Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR). The CFTR gene makes a protein responsible for controlling water and salt movement in and out of your body’s cells. This helps in the production of thin and freely flowing mucus.
When the CFTR gene does not work properly in the body, a thick and sticky mucus builds up. This leads to infection and salty sweat. The mucus clogs the air passage and other ducts and causes Cystic Fibrosis.
A child inherits a copy of the gene from each parent. When someone inherits a mutated CFTR gene from one parent and a normal CFTR from the other, the person becomes Cystic Fibrosis Carrier. They are usually healthy. However, they are prone to pass the mutated CFTR gene on to their children. Performing carrier testing is a good idea before getting pregnant.
Symptoms of Cystic Fibrosis
Cystic Fibrosis symptoms differ from one person to person and depend on the severity of the disease. The symptoms may continue to improve or worsen with time. People with CF have the following symptoms:
Higher levels of salt in the sweat than the normal levels.
Frequently occurring sinusitis
Persistently coughing, producing thick mucus
Recurring lung infections
Stuffy nose or inflamed nasal passage
Infertility in men
Lack of weight gain and growth
Blockage in the intestines of the newborn
Severe constipation causing rectal prolapse
Troubled bowel movements with foul-smelling and greasy stools
Cystic Fibrosis Effects on Pregnancy
Pregnancy complications who have CF may differ from one person to another. The growing baby could put pressure on the lungs and make it difficult for the mother to breathe. Women often have constipation. Below listed are some effects during pregnancy:
1. Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
During pregnancy, high blood pressure results in increased resistance because of harder blood vessels. This can reduce blood flow to the baby, slow down the baby’s growth, and lead to premature delivery.
2. Premature Delivery
Major respiratory issues, weight gain, and even poor nutrition increase the chance of premature delivery. Babies born before the 37th week of pregnancy may experience infections and can have breathing issues.
3. Gestational Diabetes
This happens during pregnancy when a mother has high blood sugar. It can cause issues and difficulties in the developing baby. Diabetes can damage a patient's eyes and kidneys.
4. Respiratory Issues
With Cystic Fibrosis, breathing issues escalate quickly in people. It is crucial to get this symptom treated aggressively to receive the required oxygen for the mother's body and the baby.
5. Nutritional Deficiency
This can prevent the baby from growing in the womb properly. It could lead to problems in gaining weight by the mother and prevent in maintaining acceptable nutritional requirements.
How Is CF Treated During Pregnancy?
There is no permanent cure for CF. Your treating doctor will guide you through the process. With the advancement in medical sciences, there are numerous treatments available to reduce the symptoms of cystic fibrosis and minimize the menace of complications. Below are some of the ways to treat cystic fibrosis.
Chest Therapy is a common technique where the head is placed over the edge of the bed and the clap with cupped hands along the sides of the chest. The therapy helps in the loosening of the lungs and makes it easier to cough up. This is performed three to four times a day.
A proper diet plan with fiber and salt in higher quantities should be included in the dietary intake.
Drink a lot of fluids at regular intervals to thin the mucus in the lungs
Draw a fitness plan. Do regular and simple exercises like walking, cycling, etc., to clear the airway passage of the lungs.
Smoke, molds, and pollen to be avoided at all times
Medicines prescribed by your treating doctor. These would generally include Mucus thinning medicines, Antibiotics, bronchodilators
Use of feeding tubes to supply essential nutrients when cystic fibrosis restricts the digestive system and prevents absorption of nutrients from food.
Based on the severity of the illness, the treatment may require surgeries like bowel surgery to remove the blockage from the bowel system or even lung transplant to improve a person’s quality of life and longevity.

During pregnancy, prenatal screening and diagnosis should be performed. The tests will show if your baby is likely to have cystic fibrosis or become one of the gene mutations that cause CF.
CVS (Chronic villus sampling) test is carried out between the tenth and thirteenth week of pregnancy. Another test, Amniocentesis, is done between the fifteenth and the twentieth week of pregnancy.
Consult a pulmonologist who will work closely with you to treat your CF throughout your pregnancy.
Continue your treatment for CF. Do not stop the CF treatment during prenatal care checkups.
Inform your health care providers and prenatal providers, first about your pregnancy and secondly about all the medicines you take.
During pregnancy, you are eating for two, hence eating right is critical. Take nutritious food to meet the nutrients and calorie requirements.
Eat many fruits and vegetables, drink enough water, and add fiber to your diet to avoid constipation.
Exercise daily to keep your lungs healthy. Consult your doctor and nutritionist to ensure the exercises are safe for you
Regularly monitor your health and ensure any other conditions like liver diseases and diabetes are in check.
It is best not to stop or change your medicines without consulting your doctor. Generally, most medications used for treating CF are considered safe for the mother and the baby.
FAQ's
Below are some frequently answered questions related to cystic fibrosis and pregnancy.
1. Can You Get Pregnant If You Have Cystic Fibrosis?
Yes, you can be pregnant if you have cystic fibrosis. Most women have healthy pregnancies, and their babies are born fine. Even in situations where CF affects the reproductive system, it prevents a woman from getting pregnant. It is better to consult your health care provider to assess and gauge any potential risks before you get pregnant.
2. Is Cystic Fibrosis Harmful in Pregnancy?
Most women will not face any fertility issue or pregnancy complication with the presence of cystic fibroids. However, on a case-to-case basis and depending on the severity of the illness, complications like hypertension, preterm birth, gestational diabetes may show up. In case you are already pregnant, perform cystic fibrosis testing during pregnancy. This will help you find out if your fetus has cystic fibrosis or is a carrier.
3. Can You Breastfeed Your Baby If You Have CF?
Yes, you can safely breastfeed your baby without compromising their health. Mother’s milk is the best food for the baby. When you have CF, it will take a lot of energy for the body to make milk. This may lead to problems in getting enough calorie intake for you and your baby. It is important to work with a dietician for a proper meal plan so that your body gets the required amounts of calories daily.
Cystic Fibrosis does not stop you from starting a family. You will need to make an effort for that extra care and little preparation. Consult your doctor to assess any potential risk before becoming pregnant. It would help if you worked closely with your treating doctor and other care providers. It is important to take good care throughout the pregnancy period to ensure the best possible result for your baby and yourself.
