Lactating After Baby Loss and Stillbirth
Nothing is more tragic than losing your baby. Sometimes such occurrences are inevitable, and there may be nothing much that you or your doctor can do. Some women may make an informed decision and terminate their pregnancy, while others may miscarry suddenly. Whatever may be the reason, it may become challenging for a grieving mother to deal with the milk supply. Let us go through the situation where women experience lactation after the loss of their baby or after a stillbirth.
Is It Normal to Express Milk After Infant Loss?
Yes, it is very typical for a woman to experience lactation after losing her baby. The lactation happens due to the hormonal changes that occur inside a woman’s body. This condition may begin within a couple of days after the tragic event. Where some women may experience extreme discomfort or pain in their breasts, others may not feel so. You may either let nature do its bit and wait for a few weeks until your milk dries up or you may step up and take charge, and follow some ways to put a stop to your milk supply. The choice is yours; however, if you choose to put a put a stop yourself, then you may follow some of our recommendations.
How to Stop Lactation Post Loss of Baby?
Breast milk may make your breasts tender and heavier. Sometimes, your breasts may become engorged or swollen too. It may take you some time to get over your emotional pain, but some ways may help you in reducing your physical pain. Here, we shall be discussing some ideas on how to stop lactation after miscarriage or abortion:
Sage tea is an effective home remedy that may help in dealing with many medical ailments. You may also consume sage tea to stop your milk production.
It is believed that taking Vitamin B6 supplements may help in reducing your breast milk supply.
You should abstain from any nipple stimulation. This is because any kind of vigorous touching or stimulation may increase your milk supply.
Taking rest to recoup your strength is one of the most effective ways of healing your body. Ensure that you give your body ample rest and let it heal naturally.
Cabbage leaves can be used to suppress your breast milk production too. Take some fresh cabbage leaves and wash them nicely. Put them in the refrigerator for some time. Apply the cold cabbage leaves on your breasts to put a stop to milk production, and also, to reduce any pain related to breast engorgement.
Hot water baths are very effective in relieving any pain associated with breast engorgement or tenderness. The flow of warm water on your breasts may ease the milk flow and stop your agony.
Do not wear any underwire bras or tight bras during this time. It may not only make it difficult to stop the milk production, but it may also increase your chances of having infections such as mastitis.
You can use an ice pack on your breasts to help relieve any sort of pain or tenderness. However, make sure you do not use the ice packs for more than 10 to 15 minutes.
You may take medication to stop lactation after miscarriage after consulting your doctor. Also, you may consume medicine to reduce your breast pain. Over-the-counter tablets like Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen can be used to help reduce your pain and discomfort.
If your breasts feel too full, you may use a breast pump to pump out excess milk. You may do so manually too. Failure to do so may sometimes lead to mastitis and increase your chances of contracting other kinds of infections too.
Some herbs such as parsley and peppermint may prove to be helpful in reducing your breast milk supply.
You may get in touch with a lactation consultant to help establish the best ways to deal with this painful situation.
Simple Care Tips Post Infant Loss
It may be difficult, but it is vital that you come out of your physical and emotional loss. Here are some simple care tips that you can follow after losing your baby or after the stillbirth of your infant:
Make sure your body heals well - and for that, you must take ample rest. Pay heed to your diet too and make it a point to include a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables.
Drink plenty of water and satiate your body’s fluid requirement. You may include fresh fruit juices, coconut water, milk and other forms of fluids too.
You could experience abdominal pain or cramps after a miscarriage or stillbirth. You can use warm compressions to soothe the pain or take painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen to reduce the pain.
You may massage your lower abdomen to ease any pain in that region. Massaging may also help in reducing any bleeding-related pain and also may assist in getting your womb back to its normal size.
You should abstain from any sexual intercourse until two days after your vaginal bleeding ends.
In case you experience any severe abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding or you have a high fever, consult your doctor immediately.
The tips mentioned above to stop breast milk after an abortion or a case of stillbirth may prove to be of great help. In case you find anything abnormal about the milk coming out of your breasts, you should approach your healthcare practitioner and report your symptoms. Your doctor may guide you with the best ways to deal with your problem.
Losing a baby or miscarrying is one of the most difficult situations that a woman could go through in life. Be strong and do not hesitate to ask for help to overcome your grief. Counselling by a professional qualified in dealing with baby loss and the support of your loved ones will help you get back to your normal life eventually.

Beautiful Bird Poems for Kids
Parents and teachers teach young kids new words, expressions, sentence structure, creativity, and poems enhance their imagination. Through reciting poems, teachers and parents engage the interest of toddlers and preschoolers in the learning process. As the young kids recite the poems repeatedly, they learn to fluently pronounce new words, learn about new things and express themselves. As the young kids recite or read the poems, their imagination expands, and they learn to associate the poem’s words to the things around them.
Best Bird Poems for Children
The most convenient way to introduce new words and teach sentence formation to young kids is through poems. The earliest poems taught to kids are about or related to birds. In most bird poems, the birds symbolize joy, spring, love, and freedom for preschoolers. So it becomes easier for kids to associate with them and learn sight word recognition through them. Some famous bird poems by renowned writers are more sophisticated, and they use birds as symbols to impart a deeper meaning about a specific bird. There are poems on different birds such as owls, penguins, etc. There are also poems about birds based on their colors, such as a bluebird poem or a red bird poem. Then there are short bird poems that help the young kids learn new words without overwhelming them with long sentences.
Here are some of the best bird poems for kids:
1. ‘What Does Little Birdie Say?’ by Alfred Lord Tennyson
What does little birdie say
In her nest at peep of day?
“Let me fly,” says little birdie,
“Mother, let me fly away.”
Birdie, rest a little longer,
Till the little wings are stronger.
So she rests a little longer,
Then she flies away.
What does little baby say,
In her bed at peep of day?
Baby says, like little birdie,
“Let me rise and fly away.”
Baby, sleep a little longer,
Till the little limbs are stronger.
If she sleeps a little longer,
Baby, too, shall fly away.
2. ‘A Bird, came down the Walk’ by Emily Dickinson
A Bird, came down the Walk -
He did not know I saw -
He bit an Angle Worm in halves
And ate the fellow, raw,
And then, he drank a Dew
From a convenient Grass -
And then hopped sidewise to the Wall
To let a Beetle pass -
He glanced with rapid eyes,
That hurried all abroad -
They looked like frightened Beads, I thought,
He stirred his Velvet Head. -
Like one in danger, Cautious,
I offered him a Crumb,
And he unrolled his feathers,
And rowed him softer Home -
Than Oars divide the Ocean,
Too silver for a seam,
Or Butterflies, off Banks of Noon,
Leap, plashless as they swim.
3. ‘For a Bird’ by Myra Cohn Livingstone
I found him lying near the tree;
I folded up his wings.
Oh, little bird,
You never heard
The song the summer sings.
I wrapped him in a shirt I wore in winter;
it was blue.
Oh, little bird,
You never heard
The song I sang to you.
4. ‘A Hatching Song’ by Judy Sierra
I’m almost hatched! I’m almost hatched!
I’m small, I’m wet, I’m not out yet.
I’m almost hatched!
I’m pecking hard, I’m pecking hard.
I’m tired, I’m weak, it hurts my beak.
I’m pecking hard.
My head’s outside, my head’s outside.
The moon is bright – the world’s so white!
My head’s outside.
I’m really hatched, I’m really hatched.
At last I’m free. Hey, Dad, it’s me!
I’m really hatched.
5. ‘Song’ by John Keats
I had a dove, and the sweet dove died;
And I have thought it died of grieving:
O, what could it grieve for? its feet were tied
With a single thread of my own hand’s weaving;
Sweet little red feet, why should you die–
Why should you leave me, sweet bird, why?
You lived alone in the forest tree,
Why, pretty thing! would you not live with me?
I kiss’d you oft and gave you white peas;
Why not live sweetly, as in the green trees?
6. ‘Consider the Penguin’ by Lucy W. Rhu
Consider the penguin
He’s smart as can be -
Dressed in his dinner clothes
Permanently.
You never can tell
When you see him about,
If he’s just coming in
Or just going out!
7. ‘Early Bird’ by Shel Silverstein
Oh, if you’re a bird, be an early bird
And catch the worm for your breakfast plate.
If you’re a bird, be an early early bird-
But if you’re a worm, sleep late.
8. ‘The Chickadees’ by Harriet Jenks
Four little chickadees, sitting in a tree;
One flew away and then there were three.
Chickadee, chickadee, happy and gay,
Chickadee, chickadee, fly away.
Three little chickadees don’t know what to do;
One flew away and then there were two.
Chickadee, chickadee, happy and gay,
Chickadee, chickadee, fly away.
Two little chickadees sitting in the sun;
One flew away and then there was one.
Chickadee, chickadee, happy and gay,
Chickadee, chickadee, fly away.
One little chickadee can’t have any fun;
He flew away, and then there were none.
Chickadee, chickadee, happy and gay,
Chickadee, chickadee, fly away.
9. ‘If I Were A Bird’ by Jackie Silberg
If I were a bird, I’d sing a song
And fly about the whole day long
And when the night comes, go to rest,
Up in my cozy little nest.
10. ‘Preening’ by Frank Asch
Preening every day,
what a chore! wing up,
leg out,
tuck,
twist,
and stretch.
Preening every day,
what a bore!
Wing down, leg in,
bend,
reach,
and nibble.
Preening every day
is the price we pay
to crouch, spring, and soar!
Flying day and night, what a delight!
11. ‘An Unassuming Owl’ by Jack Prelutsky
An unassuming owl,
having little else to do,
remarked within the darkness
a discreet and subtle “WHOOOOOOOOOOO!”
A self-important owl,
puffed and pompous in the gloom,
responded with an overblown
and condescending “WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!”
12. ‘In The Beginning’ by Frank Asch
In the beginning, when the earth was new,
birds had no feet but only flew.
When they crashed upon their nose,
Mother Nature gave them toes.
Then they dined standing on the beach,
catching all the fish within their reach.
And when they fought for fish to eat,
Mother Nature stretched their feet.
“Nobody here can fall asleep!
So, you long-legged birds, fish in the deep.
Short-legged birds, fish near the shore,
And stop that fighting! You hear? No more!”
13. ‘Magpie’ by Shirley Wishart
Magpie they call me
Though I know no reason why
For I am handsome and clever
And I never never lie.
Legend tells of other birds
Asking me to teach them
How to build a nest.
When I began to show them
They said they knew best.
This is why I live in a nest
With a sheltering roof and a view –
And other bird’s nests are like mine –
but cut in two.
Teaching children bird poetry helps them in developing their creativity and speaking skills. Most are simple, engaging, and enjoyable to learn, and they help children recognize sounds, learn new words, and develop their inventiveness.

Does Your Baby Have Stranger or Separation Anxiety? - How to Tackle It
What is Stranger Anxiety?
This is usually demonstrated by crying when an unknown or unfamiliar person approaches. Normally it starts at about 8 - 9 months and usually subsides by 2 years of ag. Stranger anxiety is related to the child’s developmental task of distinguishing the acquainted from the unacquainted. Both the duration and intensity of the nervousness (anxiety) varies greatly among kids.
Some babies show a strong preference for one parent over another after a certain age, and grandparents may suddenly be viewed as strangers. Anticipating this during visits helps prevent misinterpretation of behaviour. Comforting the child and avoiding overreacting to such behaviour is usually the only therapy needed.
If a new person is coming, having that person spend some time with the family before the actual day makes sense. When the event arrives, having parents spend some time with the child and sitter before they leave is prudent. If grandparents are coming to watch over the child for a few days while parents go away, they should arrive a day or two early.
Stranger anxiety of pronounced intensity may be a sign of more generalized anxiety and should prompt evaluation of the family situation, parenting techniques, and the child’s overall emotional state.
The day-to-day relationship between baby and parents, not the degree of anxiety when meeting strangers is the best measure of emotional health in the baby.
Stranger anxiety is a normal part of a child's cognitive development. Parents concerned about educating their children should be cautious when approached by unfamiliar people. However, we need to find a balance between concern and encouragement of their natural inquisitiveness and friendliness, while at the same time teaching them that they should always rely on parental supervision and consent in dealing with outsiders.
Stranger anxiety can sometimes upset friends and relatives, who may feel rejected by an introverted child. The baby may reject a caregiver he/she was previously comfortable with or grow hysterical when relatives visit. This can be unsatisfying for us, since the baby may reject the parent who is not the principal caregiver. Parents should respect the child's fear and allow her to approach people. If the child does not want to be hugged by or sit with a relative, it is ill-advised to force her. In the long run, children outgrow their fear and become more easy-going with strangers.
Safe Attachment and Social Referencing
Around 8-9-month-old babies would have reached an important milestone in the development of an attachment to their mother. Babies with a healthy attachment prefer being near their mother, because the mother is the person who helps them with their physical and emotional needs.
Although they may move away from the mother to explore, they will still look back at her face for assurance when they’re not sure about something. This is called ‘social referencing’.
Person Permanence
Most babies at this stage would have developed an understanding of person permanence (that people still exist when they can’t be seen). Whereas before they had to be able to physically see their mother to know she existed, they can now hold a picture of her in their mind.
When baby can’t see their mother, they may become upset and terrible in response to the separation. It’s still better for a mum to tell her baby she’s leaving, rather than hoping the baby won’t notice her going.
So always wave a goodbye and say that you will be back sooner to comfort the child.
Separation Anxiety- What Is It?
Separation anxiety is when a baby becomes worried or upset when they’re separated from the person who cares for them the most — often it’s the mother. Babies understand that people leave before they learn that people return. They can tell from your actions that you are about to leave. Anxiety begins to build even before you leave. Upset and crying occur at the time of separation, sleep difficulties are common.
This usually develops in the second half of the first year.
How Can You Reduce or Tackle This?
Practice staying away for short durations.
Introduce strangers early.
Try distracting the baby when you leave.
Always leave when she feels good, that is, when she is well-fed or not sleepy.
Learn to say goodbye which would signal that you will not be available.
Don’t look back.
Don’t fall for the tears, they are short lived.
