Can You Feel Your Baby’s Heartbeat in Your Stomach During Pregnancy?
If you are pregnant, no doubt, you must be thrilled. You may have also started imagining about the ‘pregnancy bump’. But in the first trimester of your pregnancy, you won’t have a big belly. You will experience morning sickness, headaches, and cramps. You will experience everything that a woman does during pregnancy, but hearing your baby’s heartbeat for the first time will make the experience real, especially when you haven’t begun to show yet.
In a couple of months, you might feel a pulsing sensation in your womb and mistake it for your baby’s heartbeat. But is that really the baby’s heartbeat or is it something else? Find out!
Is it Possible to Feel Your Baby’s Heartbeat in Your Stomach?
The pulsing sensation experienced in the stomach during pregnancy is nothing but blood vessels. If you feel a pulsing vibe, it will most likely be the pulse of your abdominal aorta, the large artery which carries oxygen-rich blood from your heart to the lower part of your body. This aorta pulse will be more prominent in the second and third trimesters of your pregnancy. There will also be an increase in blood volume during pregnancy and your blood vessels will be more relaxed during this time. These changes could lead to a forceful pulse, hence you might notice it. However, it should not be mistaken for the baby’s heartbeat. You won’t be able to notice your baby’s heartbeat up until four weeks of your pregnancy on an ultrasound, and perhaps for several weeks to come, unless an external device is used to feel it.
Reasons Why You Cannot Feel Your Baby’s Heartbeat
As mentioned above, if you feel the pulsing sensation, it will be the pulsing of your abdominal aorta, which will be more prominent during pregnancy. In the early stages of pregnancy, you won't feel your baby’s heartbeat in the stomach because your baby is protected by his own body, then further shielded by amniotic fluid, the amniotic sac, your uterus, muscles, and the skin of your body.
During the first four weeks of your pregnancy, you will not feel his heartbeat in your womb because his heart will begin to develop roughly three weeks after conception and will develop completely by four to five weeks. Also, the force of contraction in such a minuscule heart will virtually be indiscernible because of so much cushioning around it. Even at full-term gestation, when your baby's heart will most likely be beating at 110 to 150 beats per minute, it will be impossible for you to feel his heartbeat without an external device.
How Does a Doctor Check Baby’s Heartbeat?
During pregnancy, your doctor will conduct a transvaginal scan. A transvaginal ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to project as-is images of a pregnant woman’s internal organs. The sound waves help create the image of the foetus. Your doctor will most likely suggest a Doppler scan to check your baby's heartbeat around the twelfth week of your pregnancy. He will detect the baby's heartbeat using a Doppler device, which helps detect the heartbeat of the foetus easily.
It is important that you monitor your baby’s heart rate during pregnancy to rule out any anomalies. It can help in detecting an anaemic baby, abruption of the placenta, and poor oxygen supply. Go for timely scans to monitor your baby’s heartbeat and to keep track of his growth. Also, keep track of your baby's kicks, and let your doctor know if you notice anything unusual.

As a child grows up, many parents start noticing weird habits or behavioural tendencies in their children. Some of them are pretty usual for kids of all ages, such as biting their nails, or sticking their fingers in the ear and smelling the wax and so on. But picking the nose seems to be the grossest of them all. A toddler picking nose is not a new thing but some kids do end up tasting their fingers after doing so. It could be simple curiosity or maybe a habit too difficult to throw off.
Is Nose Picking Normal In Children?
Picking the nose is absolutely normal. It is a tendency that every kid ends up doing and some adults do it as well. Our nose is extremely sensitive and any irritation that is felt in it needs to be rid of immediately. The quickest way is by using our fingers. Yes, our society deems it impolite to do this in public in front of others, but some children do end up crossing the line by eating the mucus that comes out of the nose. This is where things go from normal to absolutely gross.
Why Do Children Pick their Nose?
Many parents wonder why do kids pick their nose and eat it in the first place if the entire activity is so gross. Well, the definition of what’s acceptable and what’s gross might be established for adults, but kids are just kids. Many kids indulge in nose picking out of necessity as well as out of habit too.
Most kids pick their nose when there is an irritating element or too much mucus has started tickling them.
The nose does tend to feel dry at times and itch from within, causing the need to stick your finger in and cure the itch.
Parents might enforce the habit to clean the nose while bathing, which might end up kids doing it all the time.
At times, kids can get nervous and while some kids bite their nails, others might pick their nose.
The child could be simply bored and be picking your nose and playing with the mucus is quite interesting for them.
Involuntary. The act of picking the nose is so reflexive that your kid might not even be aware of it.
How Can You Stop Kids From Picking their Nose?
If the act of your kid picking his nose is getting to you, here are a few ways you can handle the situation.
1. Let It Go
He’s just a kid. Most kids tend to pick their nose and you don’t need to scold them every single time. Try telling him a couple of times and then just ignore it, making sure his fingers are clean at all times.
2. Get A Checkup
If the nose picking seems chronic and your child seems to be in pain or get immense relief after picking the nose, it could be a sign of an infection or some condition that is making your child uncomfortable. Get a doctor’s opinion when you can.
3. Keep Hands Occupied
Kids at this age are full of energy and feel the need to be occupied with some activity, even when they have nothing to do. Understanding when your child picks his nose can let you know if this is the case. In such a scenario, you can instill another habit in your child to keep the hands occupied. Giving him some chores or even teaching him the Rubik’s cube could help reduce the chances of him picking his nose.
4. Proactive Measures
Scolding your child is never the right way to stop his habit since he might be doing it unconsciously or at times, there truly might be some irritation in his nose. If it has turned into a habit, you can take corrective action by using tapes on his fingers so that they don’t enter the nose properly. Keep these acts restricted to home so that he isn’t embarrassed when he’s outside.
5. Accept the Act
When you catch your child picking his nose, sit in front of him and pick your own nose as well. When he starts laughing about it, let him understand how funny and weird it feels to see someone do it. Help him understand the need to do it and teach him ways to go to a private place and pick his nose without anybody seeing it.
6. Use a Handkerchief
If your child’s nose has a lot of mucus, picking the nose and having the mucus on the fingers can be very disgusting. Teach him to use a handkerchief to clean his nose and keep his hands clean.
7. Maintain Hydration
The presence of a dry nose can get quite irritating, resulting in the need to itch the inside of the nose. Let your child drink enough water throughout the day and keep well-hydrated levels in the body.
When To Worry?
If you spot your kid picking his nose and eating it, teach him to stop doing that as soon as you can. But if the picking of nose results in nosebleeds or your child seems to be in discomfort, it might be that he might have put an external object inside and is having trouble breathing. Contact your kid’s physician as soon as possible in case of serious situations.
Nose picking in preschoolers is quite rampant is not a cause to worry. Gradually, over the years, by observing others, your kid will get rid of the habit by himself and learn to clean his nose while bathing or in private. Don’t shame your kid for doing so and let him be a kid while he still can.

Rollercoaster Journey of 10 months - Tough and Enjoyable New Experiences
I am writing my first blog, don’t know whether it is informative for parenting community or not, but I believe this is the platform where I can share my most cherishable experiences.
I live and work in Noida. I'm a father of a 10-month-old cute baby boy Darshik and I love to call him Darshu. On 1st Aug 2018 morning, first-time Darshu touched my hands! This was the best feeling I ever had so far, it is something that I never ever coded in words because some emotions are always unexplained. So, from here our journey starts!! First 3 weeks we hardly slept, our days started and ended with milk, potty, and diapers. Our life got changed from morning walks to mid-time and night walks which sometimes lasted till early morning. Uff!!! That was a tough time.
After that, Darshu started growing really fast and time ran like Usain Bolt. Days and nights passed and we both were now little ‘pro’ in babysitting and care. I worked like a machine! Days started at 6.00 am and ended at around 4.30 am – in between office, household, diaper, potty!! But on the other side of the coin, Darshu’s mommy played the most important inning, she is a super mom. I took breaks sometimes, but she didn’t, 24*7 with Darshu which gave her countless sleepless nights, skipped meals, forgot self-care, her contribution will always be priceless!
Days and months passed, our little man grew up and become naughty, achieving his milestones and we are blessed to witness all the happiness that God gave us in the most adorable, lovely, prettiest, cutest small bundle of joy Darshu. So far, this journey is a rollercoaster for us and we enjoyed each and every moment a lot and we thanks to god for this. Now, Our little boy stands, crawling, saying Maa, Paa, Bua, Baba, loves to go to the park, market and enjoys car trips. Always likes our food and hates his own food. He has hundreds of toys but his most favourite ones are mobiles, TV and AC remotes, utensils. Our home setting gets changed, many showpieces and small souvenirs are locked in drawers and room plants now enjoy balcony weather. In the past 10 months, we missed many movies, web series, sports but we enjoyed our little ones - smiles, crawling, kisses, hugs, which are lifetime memories for us.
This is not the end to the story it’s a beginning and will continue…. Till then take care!

Tips to Deal with Self-Doubt and Trust Yourself Again
Health and wellness require a stress-free mind. It is important to break the cycle of self-doubt and failure and nurture positive thoughts for a healthy and well-balanced life. Here are a few things that you could do to overcome self-doubt.
1. Stop Constant Comparisons
Do not constantly compare yourself with the people around you. When you look at the accomplishments of a colleague or a friend and aren’t quite there yet, you start to feel inadequate. Someone will always have something better than you. Better cars, bigger houses, higher scores, leaner figures, more well-behaved children, countless medals, quicker promotions, or fancier vacations. But remember that we each have our own journey and everything has its own time to fall into place. Also remember that there are scores of less fortunate people out there whose lives may never change.
2. Take Action and Monitor Progress Along the Way
That seed of self-doubt will blossom if you let your ideas and thoughts fester. Convert your plan into action and make sure that you chart your progress along the way. If you hit a snag, find a way around and continue on your path until you have reached your goal. Do not let your mind play the devil’s advocate by pondering over and rethinking every idea. ‘What if’ will always remain a plan if you don’t implement it. Also remember that if you are waiting for yourself to change before taking action, then you should remember the adage- tomorrow never comes.
3. Remind Yourself of Past Successes
Psychologists believe that focusing on past wins can boost your confidence and improve how you feel in the present. When you focus on past successes, it is important to remember the positive. If you dwell on negative feelings that you had during that success, you will be bound to fail in your current endeavour. Don’t always pass off credit for a win to external factors or the environment. Take pride in having persevered to succeed and recall the joy of succeeding.
4. Remember That What is Holding You Back Lives Inside Your Head
Fear is important because it prevents us from being over-confident and allows us to learn new things. But crippling self-doubt at work or fear of attempting something new can only hold you back and prevent you from ever discovering vast new possibilities. Acknowledge the fear but remind yourself that you can, and you will do what needs to be done. People achieve great things when they move past their fears.
5. Stay Positive and Choose to Be Surrounded by Positive
Surround yourself with believers. Talk to family and friends who always share positive reinforcement. This will help you remember that you are worth it and that you will do your best no matter the outcome. Think positive thoughts and talk positive words which bolster your confidence and your self-image.
6. Forgive Yourself for Your Perceived Failures
Sometimes we are too hard on ourselves for what we presume to be our failures. We beat ourselves down and don’t give ourselves another chance lest we fail again. Be brave enough to attempt once more what you didn’t succeed at. Be strong enough to accept that somethings can take more than just a single valiant attempt to crack. There are times when you are so close to success when you give up, but you wouldn’t know because you didn’t try again.
7. Meditate to Calm Your Mind
Meditation is a powerful tool that helps channelise your inner and outer energies. It can align the sub-conscious with what the conscious mind wants and help your body to be aligned to achieving it too. Use videos and podcasts specifically made for self-doubt meditation purposes to guide you until you can do it on your own.
8. Use Body language to Your Advantage
Thoughts, feelings and behaviours are deeply connected. If you slouch and frown, reading happy news could also be off-putting, and you will feel negative. Likewise, if you have a positive feeling, then the thoughts that accompany will be strong and healthy, and so will the consequent action or behaviour. So stand tall, straighten your shoulders and put those hands on your hips and say, I can do this.
9. Remember Each Adversity That You Lived through Successfully
Talk to yourself about all your lowest points in life and how you managed to sail through them. Remind yourself that you are a survivor and that you have managed to get past severe adversities to make it up to now and you will surely power through anything else that life throws at you.
10. Have a Learning Mindset
It is easy to have a mindset that is put off easily. It is much easier to give in that stay strong and fight. Remember, however, that if you switch to a learning mindset, then you will take feedback from every fall, not failure. You will give yourself credit for trying, working hard, and being in the game.
11. Reframe Your Confidence
Doubt is good, because it helps you ask the right questions and arrive at answers. Suspicion about your abilities is bad because it leads to sickness. Doubt yourself a little, but attempt everything anyway. Let not your self-doubt anxiety take away your confidence and charisma.
12. Read and Watch Powerful and Positive Material
Inspire yourself with success stories of common people. Surround yourself with books and videos that tell tales of ordinary people who achieved extraordinary feats. Such material can give you a positive boost and get your adrenaline rushing to conquer your fears.
It is easy to create a self-imposed prison through fear and lack of confidence. What is tough is, breaking out of your shackles and reaching for the stars. You may fall in the process, but dust the mud off and fly again.

Take a break from the mundane routine and take out time to communicate. Compromise can be the spice of life when done mutually like a silent duel of understanding.
If things don't work out, always remember nothing is the end of the world. You are stronger than you believe- you can sail through anything.
