Does Ovulation Occur during Pregnancy?
When keeping yourself up to date with various aspects around pregnancy, you may come across scenarios or articles in various magazines or on the internet, which talk about a woman getting pregnant with another child when she was already pregnant with one. Rarely does anyone take this seriously, but it might make a question arise in your mind does ovulation occur during pregnancy in real life? Does that mean you will have more than one baby?
Can a Woman Ovulate During Pregnancy?
A straightforward answer to the possibility of ovulation while being pregnant is a simple no. In scientific terms, ovulation is the process where the ovaries release an egg during a menstruation cycle. This egg then makes it away through the fallopian tube and, if a sperm is present there, it will end up being fertilized by it. A fertilized egg then finds its way to the uterus where it awaits an implantation by removal of the outer lining. This shedding of the lining is what constitutes your period.
When you are already pregnant, the body is aware of this and does not undertake any processes to release the egg or proceed with ovulation. The uterus, tubes and ovaries all form part of the same system, so the presence of an embryo automatically triggers these processes to shut down. The uterine lining is held in its place to support the growing baby and you won’t have any more periods during your pregnancy.
What If The Ovulation Test Shows a Positive Result?
Despite this science, you might come across various cases in magazines or articles or you might experience one yourself that shows you that you were ovulating even when you are pregnant. This usually happens when the ovulation test turns out positive and later tests reveal that you are already pregnant.
One thing that ought to be remembered is that, just like a pregnancy test, the ovulation tests, too, work on the presence of a hormone. These tests do not actually check whether the ovaries are releasing an egg or not. And since hormones undergo a substantial change when pregnancy sets in, those levels might be a little too high, triggering the test to reveal positive result for ovulation.
Therefore, a presence of a positive result to your ovulation test might purely be a result of hormonal fluctuations or even a fault test for that matter. In certain cases, your body might just be on the verge of getting pregnant or, unfortunately, on the verge of a miscarriage.
What If You Had Period while Pregnant?
Along with ovulation, another worry that might plague pregnant mothers is to wonder whether a period can occur while you are pregnant. This, too, does not have any basis in science. Periods, as mentioned earlier, are a result of shedding the lining of the uterus since there is no fertilized egg to house in it. Once you are pregnant, the uterus lining needs to stay put so that the embryo has the support to grow safely and develop into a proper foetus.
That being said, there are chances you might spot a few drops of blood or light bleeding while you are pregnant. But this is quite different from the blood you usually see in your menstrual cycles and this bleeding is a result of many other factors. If the bleeding does feel thick and unusual, it might be an indication of a problem and it is necessary to let your doctor know immediately about it.
Ovulation while being pregnant is not a possibility since our biological processes are oriented in such a way to shut off the ovulation cycle once the uterus has a fertilized egg to take care of. The only way to absolutely be sure of an ovulation is to undergo intensive tests that check for multiple follicles or ultrasounds that determine if an egg has been released. The usual ovulation tests measure hormonal levels, which can very easily fluctuate during pregnancy. Therefore, it is best to put this question to rest and enjoy your newfound pregnancy with zest.

20 Weeks Pregnant Ultrasound
Watching your little one come to life from the size of a small banana to bigger and beyond is amazement for many parents. An ultrasound (or anomaly) scan reveals how the foetus is developing and taking shape.
Your belly will be more pronounced at this point in time, and you'll notice movements of new life in your womb. Hopefully, we've got your attention now and here's what you need to know about a 20-week anomaly scan.
Are you nervous about your upcoming ultrasound scan? Worry not, we've got you covered! Here's everything you need to learn about foetal development, suspected complications and why you should take an ultrasound scan during pregnancy.
Why You Need 20 Week Ultrasound Scan?
You don't necessarily need an ultrasound scan during the 20th week of pregnancy. It fully depends on your consent and is optional. However, if you still want to learn about its benefits, here's what you have to know-
It also reveals any chromosomal abnormalities.
Will spot signs of Down Syndrome.
It shows your baby's face and position in the placenta in detail.
Any other structural abnormalities are also detected through these scans during gestation.
Will be able to prevent ectopic pregnancies.
Will confirm whether you have twins or quadruplets in the womb.
Please note that while an ultrasound has the capability to identify the gender of the baby, gender determination is illegal in India and punishable by law.
What Preparations Should be Done for this Scan?
You should drink two to three 8-ounce glasses of water and arrive with a full bladder at the clinic/hospital for the ultrasound test. Make sure you do not urinate before the scan and only afterwards since it will enable the scan to diagnose and produce a clear image of the foetus with your reproductive organs.
How Long Does Twenty Week Ultrasound Take?
The twenty-week ultrasound scan is usually done between 18 and 24 weeks of pregnancy, and the entire scanning procedure takes about 30 to 45 minutes.
How is A 20 Week Pregnant Scan Performed?
You would need to lie on an examination table, and the technician will apply a clear gel on your abdomen. A transducer will be gently moved across your belly in sliding, and rotating manner and images will flash on the screen in real-time. The position, size, and measurements of the baby are also taken during this screening procedure.
What Can You See on the Ultrasound Scan?
On the ultrasound scan, you will be able to see the development of the foetus and its organs, including the heart and bones. You will also notice whether or not the foetus is in the right position in the placenta and not blocking the birth canal and confirm whether you have a newborn or twins in your womb.
The ultrasound scan will reveal the structural development of your baby, basically. The pictures of the scan will show your baby's face and hands. White areas on the images will represent bones while the grey areas are represented as growing tissues while the amniotic fluid is represented as black.
Can 20 Week Ultrasound Detect All Abnormalities?
No. The 20-week ultrasound scan cannot detect all possible abnormalities. It will be able to confirm whether the pregnancy is ectopic and whether or not the foetus has developed structural or chromosomal abnormalities. Your baby may develop complications and abnormalities later on through infancy, and the ultrasound test is just a checkpoint in your pregnancy phase. Think of it as a development milestone in your womb.
What If Abnormalities are Detected?
If any abnormalities are detected, then you should speak to your doctor about it immediately. Normally, the accuracy rate for ultrasound tests is 60% for pregnant mothers. Not all structural abnormalities or chromosomal abnormalities can be detected, however, if your baby has Down Syndrome, you will hear about it from the doctor.
Additionally, you may be asked to go through another screening test and for a chorionic villus sampling to check for any other suspected congenital conditions. Most cases of abnormalities are treatable, and your doctor will recommend the best course of treatment and investigation once the ultrasound scan results come out.
An ultrasound scan is an exciting and fearful moment for many parents. Many fathers (and mothers) go through many emotions once the existence of life in the womb is confirmed through this screening test. You may want to talk to your spouse about life after birth and how to adjust to your new lifestyle once the baby is born.
Any false labour contractions or pain you experience at this phase is normal, and if your fetus doesn't move around a lot, then you should speak to your doctor. In general, just relax, don't worry too much and get ready to greet motherhood soon since you're already halfway there at this point.

Hubby or Baby - What If You Must Prioritise?
Have you ever come to a point where you were required to choose between your child and your husband? The man who has been everything to you and supported you in all your endeavours, and the baby whose arrival has given you unparalleled delight? Well, for sure, several women have faced this dilemma, at least once in their lifetime. And many of them have made a decision you may or may not agree with, but should definitely consider!
Do you feel your relationship is taking a back seat after you had kids? Are you so occupied and tired after doing parenting chores all day, in addition to other commitments, that there is no time left for your partner? Most of us have a hard time balancing time and priorities in the first few years after becoming parents. But it is this time that is especially vulnerable for your and your spouse's relationship too, and not giving it attention can do permanent damage.
Many moms today are bravely making a decision: the decision to always put their husband first. To always love their husband the most.
Now, before you start flipping about the above statement, consider the following reasons why you should make relationship with husband after baby a priority over the baby.
Reasons To Prioritise Your Relationship Over Your Child
Relationship problems after baby arise mostly because the couple make their baby the center of their lives. Everything they eat, do, say or don't say revolves around the baby. On some levels moms feel guilty when they prioritise themselves or their husbands over their little munchkin. But the reality is: there is no competition between your husband and your baby at all! You love them both, in different ways, and will always do so. Having said that, it is important your prioritise your relationship and your husband, and leading parenting expert John Rosemond in fact thinks it might actually benifit your child! Here's how:
Children become more independent: The less you focus on being there for their every little need, want, and demand, the more they learn to pull their own weight.
You become more stress-free: because you are not constantly focussed on being the perfect parent! There is more room for you to slack in between, and that provides a good relief from parenting.
Children get perfect relationship role-models: With the meaning and quality of relationships rapidly changing and deteriorating, this is an important point. When children see you both making each other a priority, they grow up to be more committed individuals who pour themselves into their own relationships.
Children learn about how to treat the opposite sex: Sons imbibe good qualities of how to treat women and daughters learn to be better partners that are at par with their husbands. Most importantly, both sons and daughters learn to make their self-worth matter.
Rosemond hence encourages parents to pay more attention to their marriage, and advises couple to build 'marriage-centric' homes rather than 'kid-centric' homes.
How to Balance Your Priorities and Time Between Your Husband and Your Baby
The relationship that you share with your husband is indeed a long-term one, and so is the bond with your children. Having said that, marriage after baby is of course not going to be the same as before. Here, the question is not about giving first priority to children or husband. Both relationships are equally important. This is where you can take some solace from the following tips, and use them to prioritise your time and attention between the two very important people in your life:
1. Do little things to celebrate your marriage
No, we don't mean only anniversaries and special occasions. It is very for romance and passion to fall into a rut after you are preoccupied with child rearing responsibilities. So, every day, do make it a point to celebrate your marriage with your spouse. Let him know how special he is and how he has managed to make your world so beautiful. This can be as simple to do as slipping in a message into his laptop, or kissing him goodbye when he leaves for work!
2. Have a clear discussion about your work commitments and share all parenting chores
Balancing relationships tends to become tougher if you have a full-time job. You have to meticulously juggle your commitments. You cannot really comprise on either - your career, motherhood, or on your marriage. This is why, as working parents, you need to develop a good understanding between yourself to share all parenting duties, equally. By doing so, you're unlikely to reach to a point where you have to choose your kids over spouse or vice versa. Also, neither of you will feel over-burdened.
3. Don’t overdo your parenting responsibilities or meet them all on your own
This is very important, mom! Especially when you are a new mother, you might have a natural instinct to be extra cautious of your little one. But if you find yourself slipping into that obsessive mom zone, pull yourself out of it. For it wouldn’t be really healthy for your baby, your marriage or for yourself. Also don’t try to do everything for your baby single handedly. Instead, share the responsibility with your partner. That way, you'll not only help in fostering the father-child bond but also end up doing things together for your child. This'll bring you closer as a couple too.
4. Make sure both you and your husband spend quality time with baby, and with each other
A child, especially, in his or her formative years, can be quite demanding. You must cater to your child’s needs at all times. However, remember that parents collectively contribute towards a child’s healthy development. Here, the key to success is to manage time well - and this applies to both partners. For instance, if mothering your kids take up a major chunk of your time, as is likely, try and consciously plan some time with your husband. After you tuck in your kids to bed, spend at least one hour with your spouse.
5. Never, ever neglect your husband or your marriage
Finally, steer completely clear of neglecting your marriage. Many mothers find solace in mothering their child, as a result of which they completely overlook their relationship with their husband. It is easy to think that your husband understands, and knows that you are busy with the baby. While he does understand, he also misses you and wants to spend time with you. Once a week, dress up and go out with your hubby. Take help from other family members to attend to the child as you listen to how your husband's day was and ensure that he is doing well. This way, you will successfully keep your relationship alive and save yourselves from drifting apart.
So, ultimately, whether to prioritise your husband or your baby is really a question with no answer. There’s no rulebook solution to this. While kids do need you, your marriage needs your attention too. You have to learn how to balance this tightrope and make your life a fair game.
Striking the right balance to maintain a harmonious conjugal and familial relationship is the only way to go, good luck! Read more

20 Things which I included in my hospital bag : Hospital Bag checklist
Everyone might have got this advice from their elders that they shouldn't buy anything for the baby before delivery. I also got the same advice, but I could convince them saying the relevance of buying few things before baby arrives. Ideally you should keep your hospital bag ready after 32 weeks itself with all the necessary things except the ones which we use daily. By doing so we can avoid last minute rush. Below are few things which I have included in my hospital bag.
1. HOSPITAL FILE, ID CARD, INSURANCE PAPERS
It's the most important things in our hospital bag. This file consist of all the reports from our day 1 of pregnancy. Even if the doctor whom we are consulting is not available at the time of admission, by checking our medical records, the duty doctor can proceed with the further actions required. Also we must keep id card and insurance related papers as we can submit those at the time of admission itself.
2. MATERNITY WEAR
We should take 4 to 5 pair of maternity wear so that it will be helpful to feed our baby after delivery.
3. BEDSHEETS & BLANKETS
Eventhough hospitals will provide bedsheets, it's always better to take bedsheets and blankets for mom and baby which is washed and dried perfectly from home.
4. MEDICINES
If you are taking any medicines as prescribed by your consulting doctor, never forget to add that in your hospital bag. Hospital pharmacy may have those medicines but what if the same combination which we are taking from long time is not available in that particular store. It's always better to keep things with us.
5. BABY DRESS
We must keep atleast 10 pairs of baby dress which is neatly washed and dried at home. Always remember to wash baby dress before using as baby's skin is very sensitive and can cause rashes.
6. WET WIPES FOR BABY AND MOM
7. MOBILE, CHARGER
8. SWEATER, SOCKS, SHOES
It's better to keep a pair of socks, shoe and a sweater for both mom and kid irrespective of the climate.
9. MOSQUITO NET FOR BABY
10. DEBIT CARD / CREDIT CARD / CASH
11. SLIPPERS
You can keep a pair of slippers with you for using it while going for washroom.
12. WATER BOTTLE, FLASK
Eventhough food will be available in hospital canteen, we must keep a flask with us. We need to feed baby in every 2 hours during the initial days and while waking up in between, we might feel hungry. So it's always better to keep a flask with you and fill it with drink of your choice before going to bed.
13. BOOKS
You can also keep your favourite books in your hospital bag as it would be helpful for you to reduce stress and anxiety.
14. MATERNITY PAD FOR MOMS
15. DIAPERS FOR BABIES
You can discuss with your friends and reach a conclusion on which diaper you should use for your baby. Also be careful about rashes and keep a rash cream always with you.
16. GOING HOME OUTFIT FOR BABY AND MOM
17. SOAP, SHAMPOO, TOOTHBRUSH
18, ROMPER FOR BABY
19. CAR SEAT FOR BABY
20. SANITIZER & MASK
Hope I have included everything which I took in my hospital bag.
