Is It Safe to Eat Bacon During Pregnancy
For mothers who are pregnant for the first time, it can be a time full of doubts. You have doubts about everything you do, and the potential effects it can have on the child. This is particularly true when considering the diet of the mother, as it plays a direct role in the development of the child during pregnancy.
What is Bacon?
Bacon usually refers to the processed meat of pigs, which is available in a wide variety in the market. The meat is processed extensively, but the source itself may be different - bacon made from turkeys are also available, so the main characteristic of bacon is that it is processed. The meat is made to undergo a process called curing, which involves treatment with a lot of condiments. Bacon is cured using salt, spices, nitrites, and sometimes even with sugar, which gives it its characteristic taste. The meat stays unspoiled for a long time because of the addition of salt, while it gets its tangy taste from the spices which are added.
Nutritional Value of Bacon
No matter how tasty bacon is, the hard truth is that bacon offers very less nutritional value to the person eating it. The meat has a high amount of cholesterol and fat, which is very bad for the heart and overall health. The high sodium content is not healthy, either. The only positive thing about bacon is a large amount of protein present in it, which plays a huge role as it is essential for humans. In fact, almost 4 grams in a 13 gram serving of bacon consists of protein.
Benefits of Eating Bacon During Pregnancy
Even though consuming bacon seems like an ominous thing to do during pregnancy, it has been found that bacon does have some benefits to offer to the expecting mothers. The meat has a mineral called choline, which helps a lot in terms of the brain development of the child. Other benefits mainly revolve around the bacon helping the overall growth of the child.
Risks of Consuming Bacon When Pregnant
Let us take a look at two of the major risks associated with consuming bacon during pregnancy:
1. It Can Cause Listeriosis
Listeriosis is a common bacterium which is found in raw bacon. It has been found that pregnant women are far more susceptible to attacks by this bacteria. Listeria can dramatically increase the risks of miscarriage in pregnant women. Therefore, it is imperative that you cook the meat properly before consuming it.
2. Sodium Nitrate
When bacon is cured, it involves adding a certain compound called Sodium nitrate, which has been identified as a substance that can increase the risk of cancer. While research has not found anything conclusive yet, it is better to be safe. So, make sure that you only obtain bacon which is completely nitrate free.
Symptoms to Watch Out If You Had Raw Bacon
Although raw bacon should never be consumed, in case you do, take a note of the following symptoms that you may experience and consult a doctor immediately:
Stomach upset
Fatigue
Uneasiness
Vomiting and Nausea
It has to be noted that most of these symptoms are completely generic. They affect most women at various times during their pregnancy, so the onset might not be due to the consumption of bacon.
How to Choose the Right Bacon?
You can choose bacon of the pigs that have been fed with pasture, or bacon from farmers who still prefer the traditional method of processing over the mass-manufacturing factories. Nitrate-free bacon is good, as it can benefit your child in the long run; if you do not find bacon that meets all these conditions, you can just make it at home.
How to Store Bacon?
The period of time for which the bacon remains unspoiled depends on the conditions in which it is stored. Bacon remains good for around a week if the temperature is at a 4-degree Celsius, and it can last for even a month if the bacon is stored in the freezer at a lower temperature of -18 degrees Celsius.
How to Cook Bacon Properly?
When cooking bacon, you must ensure that the uncooked bacon is kept far away from other food items. Also, remember to wash your hands both before and after touching the bacon. The bacon must be cooked for some time at a temperature of 75 degrees Celsius for it to be safe for consumption.
Bacon Alternatives You Can Try in Pregnancy
Here are some alternatives to regular bacon that you can try during pregnancy:
Turkey bacon is an alternate option, it has less fat in it.
Soy-based bacon is much healthier, as it has very less amount of saturated fat.
Mushroom bacon is another healthy alternative to pig bacon.
Delicious Bacon Recipe
Here is a tasty bacon recipe that you can try when bacon craving hits you:
Pasta with Spinach and Bacon
It is easy to make, and you can whip it up quickly too!
Ingredients
Olive oil – 1 tbsp
Minced garlic – 1 tsp
Chopped Spinach, frozen and thawed – 3/4 cup
Sodium chicken or beef broth – 1 cup reduced (vegetable broth is fine, too)
Whole wheat spaghetti – 250 grams, cooked and drained
Ground pepper
Grated smoked cheese – 2/3 cups
Turkey bacon - 5 strips
Preparation
Heat the oil in a pan and sauté the garlic in it for a couple of minutes. Add the spinach to the mix and continue sautéing for another couple of minutes.
Add the broth and continue cooking until it disappears completely. Then, add the noodles to the mix.
Cook the noodles for a minute or more and reduce the heat. Add pepper as seasoning and dust the cheese and bacon crumbs over the top of the mixture.
Having bacon during pregnancy is not very harmful to your child if the amount is controlled. If you feel that you have been infected as a result of consuming raw bacon, visit your doctor as soon as possible.

Shaken Baby Syndrome
Shaken Baby Syndrome is a severe internal injury to a child's head caused due to forceful or violent shaking. It results in permanent brain damage and at times can prove to be fatal. Usually, there are no apparent signs but at times the baby may vomit or show signs of irritability. In severe cases, complications like seizures, visual impairment, cerebral palsy and cognitive impairment may occur along with retinal bleeding.
What Is Shaken Baby Syndrome?
Shaken Baby Syndrome is brain damage in a baby caused due to inflicted brain injury. It is a serious form of abuse and is also known as Abusive head trauma (AHT). Vigorously shaking a baby by parents or caregivers in anger or frustration may result in this type of injury.
How Common Is It In Babies?
No one can place an exact number on the babies suffering from SBS. It has been estimated that approximately around 1000 to 1500 such incident occurs in infants every year. It mostly occurs in infants between the age group of 3 months to 8 months and up to the age of 5 years. However, as the child grows older, his chances of SBS are less compared to a newborn or infant.
How Does It Happen Only To Babies?
A baby's head is large and heavy compared to the other parts of the body and the neck is weak. Thus when someone shakes him, his head and neck move vigorously which jerks the brain inside the skull causing it to bounce back and forth. This forceful and uncontrolled movement causes the brain to bruise, bleed and swell along with the retina.
Can Abusive Head Trauma Happen Accidentally While You Are Playing With The Child?
Regular methods of play like tossing the child in the air, bicycling with the baby, bouncing the baby on our knee cannot cause AHT. Even a fall from the couch or any high furniture will not cause it until it is a severe fall. Only forceful and violent back and forth shaking movement can cause it.
Who Is At Risk Of AHT?
Although AHT can happen till the age of 5, infants between the average ages of 3 to 8 months most often suffer from it. However, new born babies, between 6 to 8 weeks old, are more prone to it.
What Are The Causes Of Shaken Baby Syndrome?
Infants are at a risk of brain injury when they are shaken forcefully or vigorously which results in Shaken Baby Syndrome. It is so because –
The skull of a new-born baby is very soft. If it gets hit even with a soft object like a pillow while being shaken, an infant's brain may get injured.
Babies have heavy and large heads in comparison to their body.
They have weak neck muscles which do not help in holding the head straight.
The blood vessels in the brain of a baby are very delicate. Therefore, when the head is shaken pressure is exerted which causes haemorrhage.
Signs And symptoms Of SBS
Signs and symptoms may vary from one baby to another, according to several factors like the age of the baby, how much force was used, how often he has been abused and for how long. However, some of the common symptoms are –
Irritable mood and persistent crying
The baby may vomit
The baby may lose his appetite
The baby may stop smiling or babbling like before
In serious injury, the baby may experience seizures
He may have difficulty in breathing
His body may become limp
Slow heartbeat
The baby may have trouble hearing
Retinal bleeding
In severe case, the infant may go into coma
He may also have other signs of physical abuse like broken bones, burnt marks, and bruises.
Baby may become excessively lethargic
The skin may turn pale or bluish
How Is Diagnosis Done?
To diagnose the problem, a doctor will first ask for a detailed medical history of the baby. He will also ask about the time when the behavioural changes started occurring. He will get a thorough physical examination of the infant done and look for bruises or any other signs of abuse. Since the brain is bruised in SBS, the doctor may take a blood pressure reading. Imaging tests, like MRI or CT Scan, will also be done to look for bleeding or injury in the brain. The infant may also have to undergo X-Rays in order to look for broken bones if any. Apart from these tests, a doctor may ask for other tests to be conducted to rule out other causes.
Complications And Long-Term Effects Of AHT
The complications and side effects of Shaken Baby Syndrome or AHT is long term. It can pose serious problems for the infant in the long run like –
The infants may experience seizures and have uncontrolled muscle movement.
He may be unable to see, speak or interact normally with others for the rest of his life.
He may suffer from Cerebral Palsy which affects the limbs and muscles, thereby making the movement of a person near impossible.
The infant may have intellectual and learning disabilities. He may never be able to talk or even if he talks, may not talk normally like children of his age.
The child may have emotional and behavioural problems.
Treatment
A baby with SBS or AHT requires emergency care which usually includes life support like oxygen and surgery to immediately stop internal bleeding in the brain. Furthermore, if the child suffers from other kinds of abuse along with it like burns, broken bones etc., doctor may administer treatment for that too. Ophthalmologists' may also be required to treat the child since retinal bleeding is common in an infant who is SBS-affected.
Prevention
Preventing Shaken Baby Syndrome is not impossible. All you need to do is –
Resist any urge to shake your baby. It is usually an outcome of anger or frustration in parents due to various reasons like the child crying continuously, postpartum depression, stress etc. However, just remember to back count until the anger/frustration gives way to the calmness in you.
Understanding that for a newly born or an infant crying is his only way to show displeasure or to put his feelings across.
Parents must also understand that as the infants grow and mature, the crying will become infrequent.
Parents can practice yoga and breathing exercises which will help them to lessen their stress.
Asking a friend or a family member to come and babysit sometimes while the parent can have some "me time", can help the parent to feel relaxed and handle stress better.
Enrolling in parenting classes can teach the parent ways to manage stress and how to handle crying infants.
If the parent hires a nanny or help to look after the baby, he/she should be guided properly and forewarned about SBS. In order to keep a regular watch on the help, the parent may install CCTV cameras.
When Should You Call The Doctor?
A doctor should be immediately called in when you see any of the symptoms of SBS like seizures/convulsions, breathing problems, or retinal bleeding, or if you suspect that your baby has SBS.
What To Do When Babies Cry?
The first thing to remember when your baby is crying is to relax. Remind yourself that it is a passing phase and with time your baby will mature and his crying will become infrequent. After having given yourself an inner "pep talk", try out the following –
Lift your baby and caress him and do a little talking with him.
Then wrap him in a blanket so that he feels secure.
Try creating noises which will help in drowning the other noises. You could even sing something to him like a lullaby.
Do the swinging movement (either in your hands or you could even place him in a cradle in case he has stopped crying by now)
You could also let him suck on a pacifier. Better still, breastfeed him (or give him a bottle of milk). In case he is crying due to hunger, that will pacify him.
In case you sense something wrong with your baby, take him to a doctor immediately.
Understanding the essential causes of Shaken Baby Syndrome is the best way in which we can prevent it. It requires a cooperative effort in identifying, investigating and preventing SBS in children. Everyone should be equipped with the knowledge of SBS so that any individual can easily detect it, manage it (if they see anyone affected by it) and try and prevent it.

Here's a Magic Wand That Will Change Your Child's Glass of Milk Forever
Do you think magic doesn’t exist outside Harry Potter books, that it is just an elaborate charade that doesn’t work in real life? Well, just take a moment to think about that time your baby smiled at you. That time he learn to hold a cup perfectly. And that time he picked up his glass of milk himself and emptied it in a minute, his milk mustache nice and big. Aren’t these moments of pure magic? Yes, even that one about kids who finish their glass of milk with enthusiasm. For you see, there now exists a magic wand that lets all moms witness this spectacle!
It’s called a milk-flavouring straw and has the potential to infuse a regular, monotonous glass of milk with flavours as exotic as cookies and cream and chilled out choc-mint – all without interfering with the nutritional value! Sipahh's magical straws are deliciously crystal-filled and come in handy packs of 5, 10, 25, 40, 50 – the more the merrier. The best part: unlike magic wands in folklore that had to be sought after perilous journeys, this one is available in online stores such as Godrej Nature's Basket as well as in modern retail stores near you. So all you need to do is rip, dip and sip your way to deliciousness!
So moms, if ensuring that your child gets his daily quota of milk has become your most exhausting experience of the day, you have to check out this amazing invention.
1. There’s No More Complaining “Mamma, Milk Smells Bad!”
A lot of children complain about the smell of milk. Cardboard, rotten eggs, snakeskin – there’s no end to the terrifying comparisons. But now your kids don’t need to smell the milk any more. The straws keep their nose away and they can sense only the yummy flavours.
2. There’s No Messing with the Nutritional Value of Milk
It is a fact universally acknowledged that kids in their growing years, still new to a variety of tastes and fussy about everything, fall in love with everything processed! This is also the case with several off-the-shelf drinks and milk-based products – the nutritional value of milk suffers during the processing. But not with these straws. They don’t mess with the goodness of milk at all; the yumminess is just a bonus!
3. They are Really Easy to Store and Use – for a Long Time
When you’re losing your mind in the morning rush and the kids are still fussing about milk, you can rely on these straws to do the job. It also helps that there’s no need to use a spoon or to stir – every second saved is precious for moms, right?
4. You Needn’t Worry About the Sugar Quotient at All
Unlike several appetising goodies designed to lure kids (and unwillingly, adults), these straws have less than ½ teaspoon sugar! This is far lower than the standard serving of juice, a carbonated drink or even a flavoured milk-based beverage. This means your kids drink milk – without complaining – and not at the cost of drinking sugar alongside!
Tempting, right? We can promise you one thing, mom. The day you arm yourself with one of these magic wands will be the day that glass of milk ceases being loathsome for good. Be warned though – we are getting to hear several cases of moms using them up for themselves; after all, how can you possibly not fall in love with sunset choc orange and luscious strawberry? Mmmm! Delayed Speech in Children
Speech or communication is one area where some children may falter. For some, the speech problems fade out with time while others may need therapeutic treatment. As a parent, you need to remain vigilant in looking for the signs, and seek the help of an expert if needed.
Common Speech Disorders in Children
1. Omissions:
This occurs when your child leaves out certain sounds. For example, your child may say ‘I go to coo’ instead of ‘I go to school’.
2. Substitutions:
This occurs when your child replaces a sound. For example, You may hear your child saying ‘I like tate’ when she intended to say ‘I like cake’. Your child has replaced the ‘t’ sound with ‘k’ sound. You may even hear children substituting the ‘l’ and ‘r’ sound with a ‘w’ sound. For example, ‘The lion roared’ may become ‘The wion wawed’.
3. Distortions:
This happens when your child is unable to pronounce the ‘S’ and ‘R’ sound properly. This is also known as lisping. For example, she may pronounce a ‘rabbit’ as ‘wabbit’, or, seven as ‘theven’ etc.
4. An Anomaly in Voice:
As air moves up from your lungs and vibrates your vocal cords, your voice is initiated. This process of voice formation is known as phonation. As the voice passes through the throat, the nose or the mouth, it changes. This is known as resonance. If your child suffers from voice disorders, then she may have problems related to phonation or, resonance or, both.
a. If your child’s voice sounds harsh, husky, and croaky or you hear random variations in her pitch, she is suffering from a phonation disorder.
b. If your child’s voice has a nasal tone, then she is suffering from a resonance disorder. Such a disorder occurs owing to an imbalance of the sound energy as the voice passes through the spaces of your throat, nose or your mouth.
5. An Anomaly in Fluency:
This occurs if your child repeats, hesitates, or prolongs while speaking; it means that she is suffering from stuttering. This is an anomaly in fluency wherein the flow of speech gets distorted. You may observe stuttering in children when they are tired, or get excited, or are put into challenging situations where they may get tensed.
6. Apraxia:
This is a disorder related to the nervous system. If your child’s brain has difficulty in coordinating with her body parts that help in the production of speech, then she may understand the language but find it difficult to produce it. Examples of childhood apraxia of speech include an occasional mispronunciation of words, groping while coordinating the tongue, lips, and jaw to make a sound, etc.
What Causes Speech Problems in Kids?
Brain damage resulting from an accident or owing to suffering from a stroke, or in some cases, defects since birth, may result in speech disorders.
Hearing problems can lead to speech disorders. A cleft palate is a condition where your child may have a hole in the roof of her mouth. It is a birth defect and it interferes with the air as it passes through her throat, nose, and mouth, leading to speech disorders.
Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a genetic disorder which gets inherited. You need to watch out for symptoms like an elongated face or, for protruding eyes in your child. It leads to repetitive, cluttered speech.
Congenital disorders, such as cerebral palsy, may lead to stuttering.
Receptive Language Disorder makes it difficult for your child to understand written and spoken language.
Expressive Language Disorder makes it difficult for your child to recover the appropriate words and form meaningful sentences.
Expressive-Receptive disorder makes it difficult for your child to understand language, as well as produce it.
In pre-schoolers, their incorrect dental formation may lead to speech problems.
How to Treat Speech Disorders in Children?
To treat speech disorders in your child, you may seek the help of speech therapy. Sometimes, hearing tests and physical examinations may not be able to reveal the concerns in your child. That is exactly where the role of a speech-language pathologist comes into play. Most of the speech-related treatments would partly include a consultation with a therapist, who would observe your child while she speaks, to identify the problems and accordingly plan her treatment. Treatments include breathing exercises, voice exercises, and strategies for relaxing the muscles when your child speaks. All such exercises are part of oral motor exercises.
Best Ways to Help Alleviate the Speech Problem in a Child
Your child learns to speak by hearing. Delayed speech in children can be treated if you focus on using the right words with the correct pronunciation to help her listen and learn. You can use complete sentences to help her understand expressions. It makes sense if you read out books to your child regularly. Stories can attract their attention and help them learn the language. While reading, do ensure to point out to specific objects like a ball, a tree, a dog, a car etc. and speak out the words loud and clear for her to hear properly. You can have regular musical sessions with your child in the form of singing nursery rhymes, or, listening to songs to help her learn to speak.
You need to stay alert regarding the speaking problem in the child. Sometimes a nasal sound in her voice may be owing to some breathing problem which needs treatment, or for simple issues like a stuffy nose. While you need to consult your paediatrician for treating her allergies, sinus problems or colds, simply helping her to blow her nose can solve minor issues.
If your child is stuttering, then maintain your eye contact with her while speaking to her slowly. She will follow your actions. Maintain a smile on your face and handle her with patience so that she stays calm. It will help in easing her muscles. Children often stutter owing to stress. If you provide your child with a peaceful and relaxed ambience at home, then it would help in reducing her anxiety. Conducting finger plays can help in upgrading the speaking skills of your child.
You can go to a speech-language pathologist to get help and follow the instructions.
As a parent, you can make a difference in your child’s life by giving her the confidence to fight out any disorder. So, look for the symptoms of speech disorders and take the necessary steps to remove or minimize them.

In the times of COVID-19 - Ensuring Safety of our little ones!!
I am a mom to an 8 month old and have a full time corporate job. I am a Working Mom 🦋 .
However as I recently returned from maternity leave, fortunately I am allowed to work from home these days. Given the cure COVID-19 outbreak it's a huge blessing.
But does that mean I am not worried about the safety of my baby or my family???
Certainly I am !!
My husband works in Financial Sales sector , and has to daily go out and meet lots of people. Plus, I have 2 house helps coming daily to work. So what do we do each day to ensure my little daughter is safe ???
➡ My husband avoids handshakes at all his business meetings. He practices Namaste now! ➡ we avoid going to any crowded or public place. We are practicing #SocialDistancing and avoid any gatherings. If we have to, we wear a mask whenever at a public place.
➡ We both ensure to wash our hands frequently & properly for at least 20 seconds with soap whether at home or work ... And we always always wash our hands before picking her up.
➡ While I anyway operate from home, my hubby too is trying to schedule as many virtual meetings as possible.
➡ We keep a sanitizer in our car, and despite being avid travellers, we have put all our outstation travel plans on hold , including unnecessary social meets.
➡ First thing both our house helps - cook & nanny do as they enter the house is wash their hands first. Nanny washes her hands each time before she cooks for baby, or after she cleans up. She also takes extra care to wash the fruits & vegetables for cooking
➡ After picking any home delivery box, I make sure to wash my hand everytime .
➡ Currently we are washing & sun-drying my daughter's toys, sheets etc every alternate day. Sundrying is a must do!!
My little one's & our family's safety comes first, but work too is very important 💙 ... whether it's the job Commitment to the organization, or personal growth & security 😇 .
Most Important thing is that we are aware of and follow all the advised precautions, and do not caught in web of misinformation around us. We must remember that not only ours, health of people around us also depends on us.
