Blood Infection in Kids
Blood infection or sepsis, is the leading cause of death among children all around the world every year. It is a condition when the immune system overreacts to such an extent that it affects the organs causing fatality.
What is Blood Infection in Children?
Also known as sepsis, a blood infection in children occurs when the body creates large quantities of antibodies to fight an infection in the blood-stream. Newborns from the age of two months and children (who are not vaccinated) till the age of three are especially susceptible to the disease since their immunity is not fully developed till then. However, babies who are under two months old, having received antibodies in their mother's womb, are protected from such an infection. The only exception being the strep B newborns, who contract the disease from their mothers. Eventually, as the child grows, the risk decreases and by the age of three, the child is at a much lower risk.
Causes of Blood Infection in Children
Blood poisoning in children or sepsis in newborn happens when bacteria of one part of the body manage to get into the main bloodstream of the baby. The bacteria in the blood cause septicaemia, which, if it is not detected and treated on time, can cause sepsis.
However, there are various other factors which cause the disease in children.
Sepsis (in newborns or children till the age of three) can happen if they are not vaccinated. Children from the age of 2 to 36 months have very low immune system. Thus, vaccination acts like a shield and protects the child from various infections.
Open wounds, cuts and abrasions if left untreated for a long time can result in blood infection in babies. The reason being the Staphylococcus aureus bacterium, which can spread into the main bloodstream through the open, untreated wound.
Blood infection in newborn or children can also occur due to urinary tract infection, pneumonia, ear infections and sometimes even due to meningitis.
Pregnancy complications like the mother developing an infection in the uterus or the placenta, the amniotic sac rupturing way ahead of delivery or the mother developing fever or infection during labour can also cause blood infection in newborns.
Children being born and brought up in an unhealthy and unsanitary environment with poor nutrition can result in a weaker immune system which in turn can lead to sepsis.
The equipment used in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) like catheter, tubes and intravenous lines which are used to make incisions to administer medicines also at times leads to blood infection.
Signs and Symptoms of Blood Poisoning
Most of the times, children do not show any signs or symptoms of the blood infection. However, the most significant sign is body temperature or fever rising higher than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit. Apart from this, the other symptoms or signs are:
Children below three months of age may become tired and cranky. They may have loss of appetite and therefore refuses to eat.
The infected newborn may have difficulty in breathing and at times some may even stop breathing for a good 10 seconds.
They also urinate less and turn pale.
The symptoms may include rashes on the skin, bulge of a soft spot (fontanelles) in the forehead.
The blood infection or sepsis may also induce seizures in infected newborns.
Older children may show signs of irritability. They too, like newborns, are cranky.
A change in heart rate is seen.
Older children, like newborns, may also show difficulty in breathing.
The children may have difficulty in passing urine.
The children may experience vomiting and confusion.
Diagnosis of the Blood Infection in Kids
Since the symptoms or signs of the blood infection in children are not clear or definite, doctors order a series of lab tests to confirm or rule out blood infection in children. The doctor firstly looks for ear, throat or lung infection if in case the baby develops a fever. If there are no signs of any other infection, the doctor asks for certain tests to be done.
Blood tests are conducted to check if there are bacteria or micro-organism in the blood.
Blood tests are conducted for checking oxygen level and clots.
A spinal tap may be conducted to rule out bacterial meningitis.
A chest X-ray may also be conducted to rule out chest or lung infection because pneumonia, if not detected and treated on time, may lead to blood infection in the child.
The doctor may also conduct tests to rule out the possibility of urinary tract infection.
Other tests like CT scans, MRI scans and ultrasounds are also conducted to detect infections in other internal organs of the child.
Treatment of Blood Infection
Blood infection or sepsis in children can be fatal if not detected and treated on time. If timely treatment is not given, then the infection may spread to the heart valves or tissues which in turn may infect them and finally damage them. So while the lab test results are awaited, the doctor starts administering antibiotics to the child in order to bring down the fever and minimise the effects of the infection to the other organs of the body. In case the child looks very ill, the doctor may give him antibiotics through injections but in case the child has fever but no other signs of infection, he may prescribe antibiotics to be taken orally.
However, in case the test reports come positive, then the following steps are taken:
The very first thing that the doctor advise is to admit the child in the hospital so that proper treatment can be administered to the child and proper steps can be taken to cure the infection.
Then the doctor administers antibiotics intravenously since in case of serious condition, the child is unable to take antibiotics orally.
Then fluid is administered intravenously to the child so that the child remains hydrated. At times food is also given intravenously.
In case of blood clots, blood plasma is administered.
At times, blood pressure medicines are also administered to the child in order to keep the heart working properly.
Usually, in case of blood infection, children experience breathlessness. At times a child even stops breathing for 10 seconds which could prove to be fatal. Therefore, as soon as a child suffering from blood infection comes in, he is put on respirators so that he may not have any trouble breathing.
At times in certain critical cases where some organs get damaged, an operation has to be conducted in order to repair the damage.
Apart from all the above points, a child who is suffering from blood infection becomes very vulnerable. Therefore, he should be kept in very clean environment and surroundings during the treatment and even after it. In case a child follows the same lifestyle after the treatment, he may be at a risk of getting himself infected again. Thus proper hygiene should be maintained and good and nutritious food given to the child in order to increase and develop his immune system.
It also needs to be seen that a child is given the entire course of antibiotics and also returns back for follow up visits with the doctor.
Risks and Complications of Blood Infection
The risks of blood poisoning in kids are many. First and foremost, if sepsis is not diagnosed early and treated on time, it may even prove to be fatal for the child. It is said to be five times more fatal than that of heart attack or stroke. In worst cases, the blood pressure drops, the heart weakens, some of the organs in our body stop working and once these happens, the child spirals into septic shock which in turn leads to multi- organ failure. Sepsis is, in fact, one of the major challenges in the intensive care units in the hospitals where it is one of the leading cause for deaths.
Home Remedies for Blood Infection
Blood infection or sepsis is a serious ailment in children. It is a medical emergency which cannot and should not be treated at home. However, we can always make use of some natural remedies which can be found at home or in our gardens.
Vitamin C: It plays an important role in treating blood poisoning. It mostly helps in preventing the starting of blood poisoning. It also helps in the growth and repair of any damaged cells in the body. Vitamin C is an immunity booster and also helps in healing wounds. It helps the patients to fight the bacteria in the blood and improve the functioning of the small blood vessels.
Turmeric: It is widely known as one of the most important traditional remedies for various ailments including blood poisoning. It is also known as a natural remedy and can increase the protein content in a child's body. After being infused with more protein, the body can combat and inhibit various types of infection. This healthy ingredient is also beneficial for preventing swelling and bonds with its antibiotics and leaves with very little or no side effects.
Garlic: Like Turmeric, Garlic is also a natural immunity booster and therefore an effective natural remedy for sepsis. It is rich in a component called Allicin which helps in fighting against certain types of inflammations which leads to Blood infection. Chopped garlic cloves along with honey if swallowed regularly can ward off blood poisoning.
Honey: It is believed to modulate the immune system and therefore enables in fighting sepsis causing bacteria effectively. It is also considered to be a fast recovery booster. Honey, if consumed daily, can ward off all types of infections and if applied to a wound, is a perfect cure.

Slippery Elm: Treating a cut or a wound with the slippery elm can prevent bacteria from attacking and entering our body through the wound.
Herbs: Dandelion leaves, nettle leaves and birch leaves are good ingredients to make herbal infusions. These leaves are put into boiled water which when taken, flushes out all the toxins from our body thereby preventing blood poisoning.
Avoiding Germs: Lastly the most important among all is to keep in mind to avoid germs. We must keep our hands clean by washing them regularly, especially after one uses the toilet. We must also make sure to keep our dirty or unwashed hands away from cuts and sores in order to prevent blood poisoning.
Apart from these, we can also give our children citrus fruits like Lemons and Oranges.
How to Prevent Blood Infection in Children
Sepsis cannot be prevented always as it can result due to some infection within the body itself. Therefore, we must try and prevent sepsis by preventing what causes them.
First and foremost and the most important, every child should be immunised in accordance with the schedule of the vaccinations and age of the child. Blood infection can be prevented to a great extent by getting the child vaccinated thoroughly and on time.
We must make sure to clean every cuts, wounds and abrasion with an antiseptic.
On seeing any signs of sepsis, we must take our child to the doctor immediately since blood poisoning if detected early, can be cured.
Getting one's child checked by a doctor in case of any rashes or skin infection, can go a long way in preventing sepsis.
We must try and keep our children away from people suffering from any kind of infection like lung infection or skin infection. This will help in preventing the child from acquiring the infection from the affected person.
A child must be given a healthy and nutritious diet in order to boost the immune system which in turn will help in fighting against any kind of infection.
One must follow proper hygiene by taking regular baths and washing hands before every meal and after every toilet visit and also teach his child to do so.
As the saying goes "prevention is better than cure", we must try and prevent sepsis by consciously following the simple rules which will help the child in leading a more better and healthy life. This will not only help in increasing a child's life expectancy in our country but also help our society and our country at large, in constructing a better tomorrow.

What is the Best Age for Potty Training Your Child
Potty training is one of the most unglamorous aspects of parenting responsibility, but it is something all parents have to go through. These days there is a whole range of hypothesis and methods available to potty train children of different ages. But, the big question is, What is the right age to potty train a baby? Should you start early or wait till the child is ready?
When to Start Potty Training Your Child?
In many parts of the world, parents start potty training their kids as early as four months. In a method called elimination communication, parents watch for signs of imminent wee or poop and catch it in the potty. Some experts do not advice this method and similar to potty training age at 1 say that it can lead to problems later on. Most experts agree that children are not physically and emotionally ready to go in the potty until they are in between the ages of 18 months to three years old. Also, boys take a few months more than girls to get trained properly. However, parents who are wondering when to potty train a baby need to realize that not all children are the same, some may ace it before 18 months and some may take more than 3 years to get there.
Ideally look for these signs of readiness in your children before you choose to potty train them. Some of the signs are as follows:
They poop regularly and you notice that they will poop at a specific time of the day.
They will give you a clue that they are about to poop. The clues involve clutching the nappy area, bending the knees or crouching down.
They will look for a little privacy when they need to poop.
They will ask for a change after pooping.
Even when you are confident about their cues, there are times they shouldn’t be pushed into potty training, such as:
When there is a birth of a sibling or other family changes.
When moving to a new house or transitioning from a crib to a bed.
Starting at a new daycare or pre-school.
Stopping the use of the pacifier.
Illness.
Potty Training at Age 2
By the age of 2, children notice that their parents use the potty and show curiosity in them.
Parents should also look for potty training readiness in their children and try to introduce them to it.
Two-year-olds are also easier to potty train as they are still in the development phase of pleasing their parents.
Potty Training at Age 3
Most children are ready to make the leap in potty training by 3 years of age and can be fully trained by the time they are 36 months old. Some may take a little longer and extend to 3.5 years of age.
They may still have moments of lapse in control, especially when they are sick or nervous and that’s normal.
Potty Training at Age 4
By the age of 4, most children are fully potty trained. However, if they experience incidents three to five nights per week, consult a paediatrician. The common diagnosis is nocturnal enuresis or “bedwetting” as it is popularly known as.
Set aside your expectations on when they must be trained and let them take it at their own pace. On an average, it takes about 8 months to potty train a child.

Managing Work and Baby's Playtime Together - Here's How I Do It
Engaging your baby in play and keeping her busy is a task in itself, that too when you have to manage your daily chores simultaneously. As much as you love engaging and playing with her, it is also important that babies and toddlers engage in self-play. They should be able to self-entertain without the help of TV and mobile phones; that's how they learn to explore things, think and act accordingly on their own. Also, babies will know and remember the consequences of many actions in self-play. I always provide my 17-month-old baby time to play by herself, I do not interfere in between and just make sure that she is playing and exploring safely.
Here are some most favourite toys and activities of my daughter Swara, which keep her engaged and active for quite a long time.
1. Stacking Cubes
These are multi-shaped colourful plastic toys which are good quality and unbreakable. Building a big tower and making it fall is what she does with the stacking cubes multiple times. It improves her grasping skills, sense of size and shape and helps her understand cause and effect relationship.
2. Eggs and the chicken
This simple game unexpectedly became her favourite one! I just keep a chicken in one of the eggs and let her find out where it is. It improves her concentration, develops her thinking and motor skills in opening and closing the colourful eggs. Also, there are many small toys like cars, bangles, paper pieces which can easily fit in the eggs and I use them as a surprise for her while playing.
3. Board Books
Being a book lover myself, I was amazed to see the vast variety in baby books! Too cute I must say! Pointing at colorful pictures, trying to pronounce words and listening to the stories helps in ímproving her talking skills and imagination. All in one board book, magnet book, sound book and small palm sized storybooks are currently in her little library.
4. Dolls and Teddy Bears
This will improve eventually I guess but she has started her pretend-play with all these toys using her memory and communication skills. It usually reflects our talks and interactions with her.
5. Cleaning the house
This came as a surprise for us, but she loves cleaning, dusting and wiping things! So, without discouraging her, I just gave her a wet towel, (sometimes small water bucket to play) and she will keep herself busy in cleaning her things, tables, chairs and what not! It's a good exercise for both of us!
6. Kitchen Utensils
These are available in a variety of shapes, sizes and she loves arranging them, imitating kitchen activities like cooking and pouring some water in glasses. She keeps playing with them for hours! Good for her and me too! it's great for learning coordination.
7. Pen and Paper
Scribbling is loved by most of the kids and needless to say it extends to her hands, legs, walls and tiles of our home after some time. But she enjoys it immensely. It helps in developing the future writing and drawing skills.
So these are some of the extremely simple toys and activities (or you can say daily chores) which are easily learnt by our kids when they see us doing it. It helps in developing many skills and thought processes in them. Of course, this all should also be accompanied by outdoor playtime. As a parent, be open, do interact, avoid unnecessary restrictions and instructions, let your kids enjoy their childhood and make sure you provide something new for their curious little minds every day!

My journey towards womanhood - a juggle, an adventure, a blessing and continuing
I have always been an ambitious woman since my childhood, weather it be in academics or extra curricular activities. In school and college, there was not a single activitie/ fest which I was kot a part of. During the end of college days, I have tried for a wide variety of professions starting from Indian Army, Indian Airforce to IT companies. I have always been a quick learner. Having a master's degree in biotechnology, I am currently in IT field learning how to write computer code. I would travel, alone and with friends, explore new places and was never idle at home. I enjoyed my busy life. At that age, the teens to the early twenties, that was the definition of womanhood to me.
Once I got married, my priorities have changed. I became more centred and something new called "work life balance" has come into the picture. I have changed jobs, learned new technologies so that I can get a job with a good work life balance. It was very important for me to have a balanced personal and professional life after marriage. I knew that quality time was more important than quantity. I learned how to cook (my mom was a great cook before I got married, so I never had to cook), I would look up for interior decoration ideas and try them around my house, while I was still working. I enjoyed this work life balance, though it was a tough juggle. At this age, this was the definition of womanhood to me.
I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl and she is currently 6 months old. My entire world shifted towards her and I forget the world whenever I see her beautiful smile. I love taking care of her. At the same time, I'm juggling with spending quality time with my husband, family and my work. It is very easy to quit work after having kids, but I know how hard I worked to get to this position in my job. This juggling with various responsibilities is very difficult, but what is life without it's challenges? One must learn to love this adventure. At this point, I consider this as womanhood and I consider myself as a complete woman after becoming a mother.
With age and with different phases of life, my definition of womanhood has changed. I believe that the real definition of womanhood would be how well a woman juggles with her work, her family and her health. Most importantly, how much is she enjoying this juggle. After all, women are great multi taskers.
I would conclude by saying that I am still in the journey of womanhood, maybe in the beginning of my journey. I have a long way to go and I am excited for the adventure!

Dealing with a Colic baby! How it feels on seeing your baby crying continuously?
How it feels, if your baby wakes up at late nights and cry continuously inconsolable for several hours and you don’t have a clue why he is crying. Don’t worry, you are not the only one deals with it and don’t feel low, you are not the worst mom either.
My baby wakes up at every night 2 AM, cries and screams continuously till 5 AM or 7 Am. He started this by his 6th week and it lasted till the end of 3rdmonth. He does so at least 3 or more times per week. It seems as if he has a stomach pain or a bloated stomach. Doctors call this as Colic and the babies who has this as Colic babies.
Colic is common in new born, but usually goes away by the age of 3 to 4months. The cause of this distressing condition is not known. Colic can occur in breast fed and bottle fed babies. There is currently no cure for colic, but the following may help to calm your little one and your own frayed nerves which worked out for me. Try all of these, so that your baby will feel little calm at some point,
Ø Rock him in arms
Ø Carry him in a sling
Ø Change the environment
Ø Take him to an airy place like terrace, balcony
Ø Take him for a ride
Ø Use white noises, sing lullabies which helps calm down
Ø Make sure baby tummy is not empty, else crying will lead to dehydration. Keep nursing
Ø Massage his tummy from his right to left using circular movements
Ø Hold his legs softly and make him do cycling movements which will help in releasing gas
Ø Swaddle or Wrap him tightly in a blanket
Ø Keep him in skin contact
Ø With doctor’s advice, Simethicone drops will ease his stomach. DO NOT TRY WITHOUT A PAEDIATRICIAN’S PRESCRIBTION.
Ø Shut your ears for unnecessary advice or conclusions which would threaten you. Seek your paediatrician help and abide by it always
Ø In some places, elders will definitely insist on giving traditional home medicines to the baby. If your baby is colic, wait until that goes away to try those
Ø Put a hot water bag between baby’s stomach and you. Make sure the heat is less as baby can bear, better wrap the hot bag with a towel and then use
Ø Tummy time. Put the baby on his tummy gently on your lap. Hold and support the head with your hand. Make sure baby able to breathe
Ø Try to stay calm as your baby sense your anxiety or anger and this can make matters worse
Ø Seek help from your partner or relatives, so that you might get some rest and relaxation
Ø If you are breast feeding try to avoid certain foods that can make colic worse such as spicy foods, caffeine, onions, cow’s milk, wheat, Potatoes, eggs and any gastric food
Colic is not permanent, Trust me, the situation will become better. It is told by doctors that crying is also meant as a stress reliever for babies.
Remember, colic might not be the sole reason for your child’s discomfort. A doctor or health professional should be consulted if a baby cries loudly all the time and cannot be comforted. Read more

These 8 Very Simple Kitchen Changes Will Help You Cook At Double Speed!
The first rule of good cooking: A clean kitchen! But with our little ones keeping us on our toes, it’s difficult to manage cleaning and cooking at the same time. After cooking a meal, more often than not, we end up with a messy kitchen that looks like the site of an earthquake!
Cooking for your loved ones is a joy in itself, but cleaning up after is the pain that we all bear for this joy. It also takes up precious time that you could have otherwise used in finishing other chores...or getting some much-needed REST! But when you need to cook for the family, and there's a little one to be looked after, cooking IS time-consuming. Is there anything at all that you can do to speed things up?
8 Kitchen Arrangement Tips To Help You Cook Faster!
1. Go Double with Your Shelves
While the utensils in some drawers do take up the high space completely, a lot of times you end up wasting top space that could be used well with the simple addition of a shelf. This simple addition will help you better organize your utensils as well and take them out as and when you need them - without wasting time!
2. Seek Out Space
Watch out for the little corners near your fridge and shelves - they can be utilized well. Hang a couple of hooks and hang frequently used kitchen linen like aprons, dish cloths, pot holders, etc., in that space. You could also use the space to add shelves and store cutlery or pots and pans that aren’t compact enough for drawers.
3. Kick Things Up!
Add some more storage space for things that are used less frequently by adding in toe kick drawers. These drawers open and close with a slight push of the feet and are perfect for the little gap between the shelves and the floor. So, when you are all hassled and in a hurry, you only need a little push to take things in/out!
4. Screw In Magnet Strips
The simplest of hacks, this just needs you to screw in magnet strips on your kitchen wall and hang your knives, ladles and serving spoons right where you’re cooking. This means they will be handy when you need them during the cooking process and you won't have to look around. Not only will you have a cleaner countertop, this hack will also keep the knives out of the reach of your little ones!
5. Store In Your Cabinet Doors
The most overlooked of all spaces, the cabinet doors provide a lot of opportunities for organization. With the simple addition of small racks, you can store everything from spice racks to cooking oils! Why store these things in random places which you never seem to remember when in a hurry, when you can have them close by?
6. Don’t Waste Wall Space
The wall over the kitchen countertop is more often than not empty! Simply add small racks and store frequently used cooking ingredients like salt and oil. This little hack will go a long way in saving you both time and effort. Need something urgently? Just check the wall!
7. Hang It Up
Rummaging for fruits and vegetables in the fridge or baskets is a task that takes up a lot of energy! Just hang a big basket in a corner of the kitchen and store your fruits/vegetables (the ones that don't need to be stocked in a fridge, like onions and potatoes) right where you can see them.
8. Keep a Clean Slate
Last but not the least, keep a special sliding or hanging rack to store cleaning supplies like sprays and wipers. Be sure to use racks that air out the wipers well and you’ll always have ready to use cleaning supplies and make your kitchen clean-up process easier!
Saving time AND having a cleaner kitchen sounds like a good deal, doesn’t it? The best part - you don’t have to overhaul your kitchen - just a few one-time hacks and you’ll have a clean kitchen with quite some time on your hands! Read more

A. Nasal blockage is very common, specially in small children because of the narrow nasal cavity. Any kind of saline drops like nasal clear will be helpful in dissolving the stuffy secretions, which can be taken out by vnasal aspirator gently also steam inhalation will be helpful also, try to avoid keeping the child directly under the fan.
