Ultrasound Scan at 13 Weeks of Pregnancy
If you are 13 weeks pregnant, then it's time that you have a little celebration as you are in the safe zone now. Every stage of pregnancy is important (and can be risky), but women have a sigh of relief once they pass the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, as the chances of miscarriage lower considerably once a pregnant woman reaches the 13th week of her pregnancy.
From this week onwards, your baby will grow rapidly and your doctor might suggest an ultrasound scan to check his progress. An ultrasound scan in the 13th week can tell you a lot about your baby's health and is important. So read on to know why you should have an ultrasound scan at 13 weeks and how it is performed.
Why Should You Have an Ultrasound at 13 Weeks?
Performing an ultrasound scan at 13 weeks of pregnancy can help your doctor understand how your baby is developing. By this time, your baby's kidney should function and he should have a urinary tract system. It means that your little should start peeing in the utero. His fingerprints will also take shape by this time. A scan performed in this week can help detect how he is progressing. It will also tell you how his other organs are coming along apart from his head.
How to Prepare for Your 13th Week Pregnancy Scan
This is one of the most significant ultrasounds performed during the pregnancy phase. And to prepare for your 13th-week ultrasound scan, you should drink lots of water before the scan, as it is essential to keep your bladder full during the ultrasound. This will help the technician get a clearer image of the foetus in your belly.
How Long Does It Take to Perform an Ultrasound Scan?
A 13-week scan can take around 15 to 30 minutes and can go up to 45 minutes if the baby is lying in an awkward position. But the duration of the scan will also depend on the technician who conducts it and on your baby’s position in your belly.
How Is an Ultrasound Scan Performed?
To perform an ultrasound scan at the 13th week of pregnancy, the sonographer will ask you to lie down on the examination table and expose your belly. The sonographer will then apply some gel on your belly and press a transducer on your belly. The purpose of applying the gel is to make sure that a good connection is established between the skin and the transducer device. The device will be adjusted based on the image of the baby that is seen on the screen. The sonographer may apply some pressure on your belly to get a clear view of the baby. But don’t worry, as you will not experience pain during this process.
What Will You See on the Scan at the Thirteenth Week of Your Pregnancy?
An ultrasound scan performed in the 13th week of your pregnancy will reveal a lot of minute details about your baby. You will be able to hear your baby's heartbeat and notice that some of his body parts have developed. In the earlier scans, you must have noticed that your baby's head was slightly more prominent and bigger as compared to the rest of the body, but now your baby's other parts of the body will develop fast and you will notice the size of the head becoming proportionate to the body. The scan will also indicate any abnormalities (if any) in the baby and other details of the development. During the 13th week ultrasound, Down's syndrome can also be detected by measuring the nuchal thickness.
What If Some Abnormalities Are Discovered in the Scan?
If any problem is detected during the ultrasound, your doctor will give you more clarity about the health of your baby and your situation. Sometimes doctors even suggest a few more scans and some specific tests to ascertain the full extent of the abnormalities before coming to any conclusion.
An ultrasound will help you connect with your little one in your belly. All this while you could feel the life inside of you, but now you will get to see your baby develop and come to life. These will be the significant moments of your pregnancy journey. If there are abnormalities that are detected, don’t let it dishearten you too much at this point, instead, talk to your doctor and see what can be done about it.

CBSE or State Board - Which is Better Option for Your Child?
While most of the dilemmas pertaining to parenthood might have ceased to matter, there still remain a few which can have a huge effect on the future of the child. Education is of utmost importance for any individual, as it can define how high your child progresses in life. The importance of education can never be understated.
One of the common problems faced by Indian parents is choosing the board of education their child is going to be a part of. Considering the multitude of options and schools available around the country, it can be a really hard decision. Some of the frontrunners include the Central Board of Secondary Education, Indian School Certificate Examination and the State board where the parents are based out of. While each one has its advantages, this article will try to compare CBSE and the State board in a general manner.
Let us try to settle it- CBSE or State Board, which syllabus is the best?
CBSE vs State Board
It can be hard to compare these two syllabi, as they both have their own advantages and disadvantages. State boards cannot be generalised as they differ from state to state, but here we shall try to do so for the sake of this article.
In terms of involvement and ease of learning, CBSE trumps most state syllabi. While the state syllabi may be content heavy, the textbooks are usually difficult to read and contain heavy doses of details and facts. CBSE texts are constructed so that the students can understand the topics easily, and have a range of questions and activities between chapters to help students get a gist of what is being talked about. This makes way for more conceptual, sustainable education.
Many state syllabi blatantly expect their students to know everything in the texts- every single little detail. They promote the system of mugging up, and their exams measure how much the student has managed to memorise. In contrast, CBSE promotes conceptual learning among the students of the board. The questions asked during the exam are not answerable if the student has just learnt the text by heart- he needs to understand the concepts well in order to tackle most questions.
For higher education options, there is no board that helps the student as much as CBSE. The entrance examinations for both medicine and engineering are based out of the CBSE syllabus, and the questions are derived from the topics covered in NCERT textbooks. If you want your child to pursue his higher education in elite institutions like AIIMS or IIT/NITs, CBSE is definitely the board you should choose for your child. Right from the primary education levels, CBSE molds your child to tackle the entrance examinations which decide whether your child gets to be a doctor or an engineer.
If you want your child to get the highest marks in his board exams, the state board is a better choice compared to CBSE. Most CBSE exams are considerably harder than their state board counterparts, so the children may find the latter easier to study for. The evaluation also tends to be controlled strictly in the case of CBSE- high marks are harder to obtain, although they have great value. Contrarily, evaluation for state board exams are controlled by the state governments themselves, so it is a lot more common to find the children obtaining higher marks compared to their counterparts studying in the CBSE.
Syllabi in the CBSE are updated more often and tend to be more up-to-date and uniform compared to their state board counterparts. Also, the importance given to the state board may vary according to the state you are based out of- in Tamil Nadu, you can get admissions based simply on the performance of your child in the board exams, but in most other states, entrance exams are a must. Therefore, take into consideration the aims your child has or the aims you have for your child, before settling on a board for him.
Choosing the right board can definitely be extremely important for your child, in the long run. However, it does not mean that that is the only thing that matters in the development of your child- there are plenty of people who have been successful even after studying in the state board. It all depends on the attitude and capabilities of your child, more than the board itself. However, the better choice would be to go for CBSE over state board for the long-term development of the child.

Besides helping you tote anything from your lipsticks to your baby bottles, a handbag is one accessory that polishes your look to a tee. With the market aflood with different styles of handbags, it becomes imperative to know how to pick a bag that is both functional and fashionable. Just in case you aren't able to figure out what handbag suits your requirement and style the best, here is what you need to know.
Picking Up the Perfect Handbag
1. Tote bag
This is the best choice if you are planning to go out shopping or travelling with or without your baby in tow. It's large enough to accommodate your baby's nappies, a bottle of water, and your wallet, besides being extremely stylish. Since the bag is big, we suggest you to complement it with column dresses, fitted pants, and loose blouses. Take this bag for a little overnight trip, evening event, or even a play date. Trust this roomy bag to comfortably hold all your and your baby's essentials.
2. Satchel bag
If you never want to compromise on your style while you zip from a parent teacher meeting to a coffee date, this is the bag for you. These types of handbags are lightweight and are available in all sizes. From your camera and your car keys to a sunscreen lotion, this bag can gobble quite a bit of stuff. If you want to stay hands free, you can wear your satchel bag across the torso while you carry your little munchkin to his school. You can complement this bag with a pair of jeans and funky off-shoulder T-shirt, as well as a midi skirt and a fitted top.
3. Clutch
These cute and small bags look best when teamed with party wear dresses – both ethnic and western. There are numerous patterns and styles available when it comes to clutch bags. Pick one that matches or contrasts your attire. For instance, you may pick a beaded clutch in the same shade as the beads on your dress or an embroidered one to team with your embroidered salwar suit. Similarly, you can add to the appeal of your shimmery saree by complementing it with a glittery clutch. You can even make your little princess carry one, if she insists.
4. Diaper bags
These are a must have for the new moms who need to hold on to a world of things for their little ones. There is no better way to carry your baby’s belongings than in a diaper bag. Diaper bags for moms have separate pockets to keep your baby’s milk bottle, sipper, wet clothes, diapers and other essential items in an organised and neat way. There are several stylish diaper bags available in the market. Pick one not just for its utility, but also to add to your style quotient. Opt for diaper bags with funky prints for a casual day out or leather trimmings for a more luxe vibe at a function.
5. Sling bag
Worn just like the satchel bags, these are smaller and are quite in vogue these days. You can take one such bag for a quick shopping trip to the market when all you need to carry is some cash, your mobile, and your car keys. Pick an embroidered leather one to add to the look of your peplum top and jeggings. Sling bags can be great to carry along when you take your child for a walk around the park or while you're meeting a few friends for dinner. This small bag is light on the shoulders and is perfect for all those days when you don't have to carry much.
So what are you waiting for? Go shop for different types of bags that go well with your outfit and attitude, and flaunt a new look every time you step out of your house. Keep this information handy to pick a bag that sews both your sartorial and functional needs together. Read more

Pet Insurance - Secure Your Little Family Member
The number of pet owners in India is increasing today. Pets are looked after with the same affection and care as children and are treated like an important member of the family. Pet owners feed the best quality of food to their pets and take care of them in the best possible way. Today, there are many companies that offer insurance on several aspects of pet care to lower the burden on the owners. Let's find out more on pet insurance.
Why Should You Take Pet Insurance?
Your pets certainly mean the world to you, you shouldn’t be left unprepared in case a medical emergency strikes. If you care for your pets, taking pet insurance can help you show your pet some love. There are many benefits of taking pet insurance, which are as follows:
You can decide the veterinarian to get your pet treated. Unlike health insurance policies for people that may require them to get treated under a particular health care provider, pet insurances give you the freedom to get your pet treated from a veterinarian of your choice.
Pet insurances do not discriminate against any age or breed of the pet. Although it is advisable to get pet insurance soon after adoption for the benefit of a lower premium, your pets can also be insured years later too.
Taking insurance for your pet lets you choose the best treatment suitable for your injured or ailing pet based on the options available, unrestricted by your financial condition. Most policies reimburse close to 80% of the cost post deductibles.
With pet insurance, it is easier to manage pet care costs. The amount for the policy can be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually. It’s up to you to choose a plan that works best for you. Most of the plans also offer discounts for additional pets in the house.
Taking pet insurance is best if you want to not compromise with your family emergency fund. Sure, you can set up a savings account for a pet, but it’s often the case that you would dip into it whenever you face unexpected expenses such as household renovations or expensive vehicle repairs. That leaves with little or nothing in the emergency pet care fund.
Probably the most important benefit is that insurance can save the life of your pet in an emergency by letting you authorise any necessary medical treatment without worrying about its cost.
What Are the Features of Pet Insurance?
These are some of the features anyone one opting for pet insurance should be aware of:
1. Customised Plans
The insurance plans are customizable and are available for pets such as cats, dogs, birds, and even rabbit insurance.
2. IRDA Approved
The IRDA (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority) approves the pet insurance plans of the various companies offering them. There are different types of pet insurance schemes that are listed under this plan. Some of them include dog insurance, cat insurance, cattle insurance, horse insurance and more.
3. Sum Remains Assured
Normally the amount assured for pet insurance products such as dog insurance can range from INR 15,000 to INR 30,000.
4. Add-On Cover
There are insurance providers who offer add-on covers to the existing base police. An example would be the loss of show entry fee in case a dog is unable to make it to the show due to illness or injury, and the entry fee is forfeited.
5. Third Party Liability
Some pet insurance policies also offer cover for third party liability, in the events when your pet attacks a third party, bites them or damages their property.
6. Premium
The premium to be paid is about 3% to 5% in general for a pet insurance policy in India.
7. Different Types of Cover
Pet insurance covers can be divided into three types; money-limit cover, time-limited cover and lifetime cover. The three different types of cover will help you take care of your pet in the best way possible.
Types of Pet Insurance Covers
There are three types of pet insurance covers:
1. Lifetime Cover
The pet insurance lifetime cover is a safety net against any serious or long term illness. Some examples include conditions such as eczema and arthritis. A specified amount is given to the policyholder every year' this amount goes is used for the treatment of the pet. The maximum limit can also be reset at the time of policy renewal.
2. Time-limited cover
These are cheaper than lifetime cover and offer protection to a pet after it has contracted an illness or has been injured. The protection only exists for a certain period.
3. Money-limit cover
These offer financial aid to pet owners for the treatments or medical expenses of their pets. The policy has no time limit and can be used until the money limit is reached.
What Does Pet Insurance Policy Cover?
Pet insurance policies cover a variety of mishaps, they include:
Death due to an accident.
An illness contracted during the policy.
Treatment expenses. Some pets are more prone to injuries than others, and they all grow old with some needing surgical interventions.
An accident while in transit via road, rail, or air.
Loss or theft of the pet. It provides cover for the pet’s purchase price. Proof needs to be provided before making a claim; otherwise, the insurer would only pay the existing market value.
Treatment for behavioural problems. Pets that have behavioural problems would need treatment in the form of therapy, and the insurer would cover the cost of it.
Death due to accidental poisoning.
Third party liability, which is mostly available for dogs. The policy will cover costs that you are legally responsible for if a third party is injured by your dog or if their property is damaged by an accident that involves your dog.
Exclusions Under the Pet Insurance Scheme
There are some general exclusions under the various insurance schemes; they are as follows:
Injury to the pet caused by willful acts with malicious intent.
Illness or injury to the pet arising out of neglect or unskillful handling of the animal.
Loss or injury to pet because of war, revolution, foreign hostility, rebellion or military upheaval.
Death due to diseases such as rabies, distemper, viral enteritis, viral hepatitis, leptospirosis for which the pet has not been vaccinated before taking the policy.
Diseases contracted before taking the policy.
Some companies do not offer insurance for pre-existing conditions such as epilepsy, diabetes, heart disease, urinary blockages, etc.
Having pet insurance is another important step in taking care of the well being of your pet. It is financially beneficial and can even save the life of your pet. So, get your pet insured now!

The Postpatrum Trimester - the trimester where mother bonds with baby
We all have heard about the three trimesters of Pregnancy but nobody talks about the most intense trimester which awaits after that. Same way as in movies they don't show the life after 'Happily Married'.
The Fourth Trimester
meaning
A period of three months where you question your decision of being a mother (the most). The time when your body gives up on you but you need to comprehend the baby's signs and needs round the clock. A span of time where you get the most advice about how to handle your baby.
For me, those three months were the hardest three months of my life and will always be.
It is said that you feel the instant connection as soon as you hold the baby but I didn't get to hold him that long. I had a C-section so was bed-ridden for 2 days and when I was in a position to hold him, he was admitted in NICU due to high levels of Jaundice. The days and nights were on stand-by waiting for the call from NICU to feed him. As he was too weak to suckle in what he needed, the cycle of every two hours of pumping started, to help the let-down and later to relieve my engorged breasts.
Once he was back home, fully recovered, I was all ready to enjoy the motherhood like my pregnancy but I was stuck in an endless loop of breastfeeding and pee-pees and poo-poos and Do's and Don'ts.
As soon as my breasts took a deep breath after an hour long feeding session, it was time to change the wet nappy. Here, I changed his nappy and there my body told me to change the pad. I had just finished eating and there was another meal being prepared for me with dripping ghee. As soon as I dozed off, I was woken up by the meek cry of hunger.
My nipples hurt like hell as he was biting into them and after almost a month, I came to know that I was latching him wrong. We were struggling with the latching and were trying different positions to help us both but the elders couldn't resist telling me how new techniques were useless and theirs were the best.
I had read that breastfeeding makes you loose weight faster but that hanging belly and the outgrown hips were not loosing an inch even after feeding and expressing the milk round the clock. Stretch marks were engulfing my tummy and hips and thighs and even my breasts.
I was so exhausted that I wanted to go back to the time when I was pregnant. The third trimester looked so much better now.
When someone mentions about having another kid, I just tell them that I might be ready to do it all over again minus The Fourth Trimester Read more
