CBSE or State Board - Which is Better Option for Your Child?
While most of the dilemmas pertaining to parenthood might have ceased to matter, there still remain a few which can have a huge effect on the future of the child. Education is of utmost importance for any individual, as it can define how high your child progresses in life. The importance of education can never be understated.
One of the common problems faced by Indian parents is choosing the board of education their child is going to be a part of. Considering the multitude of options and schools available around the country, it can be a really hard decision. Some of the frontrunners include the Central Board of Secondary Education, Indian School Certificate Examination and the State board where the parents are based out of. While each one has its advantages, this article will try to compare CBSE and the State board in a general manner.
Let us try to settle it- CBSE or State Board, which syllabus is the best?
CBSE vs State Board
It can be hard to compare these two syllabi, as they both have their own advantages and disadvantages. State boards cannot be generalised as they differ from state to state, but here we shall try to do so for the sake of this article.
In terms of involvement and ease of learning, CBSE trumps most state syllabi. While the state syllabi may be content heavy, the textbooks are usually difficult to read and contain heavy doses of details and facts. CBSE texts are constructed so that the students can understand the topics easily, and have a range of questions and activities between chapters to help students get a gist of what is being talked about. This makes way for more conceptual, sustainable education.
Many state syllabi blatantly expect their students to know everything in the texts- every single little detail. They promote the system of mugging up, and their exams measure how much the student has managed to memorise. In contrast, CBSE promotes conceptual learning among the students of the board. The questions asked during the exam are not answerable if the student has just learnt the text by heart- he needs to understand the concepts well in order to tackle most questions.
For higher education options, there is no board that helps the student as much as CBSE. The entrance examinations for both medicine and engineering are based out of the CBSE syllabus, and the questions are derived from the topics covered in NCERT textbooks. If you want your child to pursue his higher education in elite institutions like AIIMS or IIT/NITs, CBSE is definitely the board you should choose for your child. Right from the primary education levels, CBSE molds your child to tackle the entrance examinations which decide whether your child gets to be a doctor or an engineer.
If you want your child to get the highest marks in his board exams, the state board is a better choice compared to CBSE. Most CBSE exams are considerably harder than their state board counterparts, so the children may find the latter easier to study for. The evaluation also tends to be controlled strictly in the case of CBSE- high marks are harder to obtain, although they have great value. Contrarily, evaluation for state board exams are controlled by the state governments themselves, so it is a lot more common to find the children obtaining higher marks compared to their counterparts studying in the CBSE.
Syllabi in the CBSE are updated more often and tend to be more up-to-date and uniform compared to their state board counterparts. Also, the importance given to the state board may vary according to the state you are based out of- in Tamil Nadu, you can get admissions based simply on the performance of your child in the board exams, but in most other states, entrance exams are a must. Therefore, take into consideration the aims your child has or the aims you have for your child, before settling on a board for him.
Choosing the right board can definitely be extremely important for your child, in the long run. However, it does not mean that that is the only thing that matters in the development of your child- there are plenty of people who have been successful even after studying in the state board. It all depends on the attitude and capabilities of your child, more than the board itself. However, the better choice would be to go for CBSE over state board for the long-term development of the child.

How to Convey the Right Message When Your Child Makes Mistakes
No one is perfect - all of us make mistakes or experience setbacks in our lives. Our children are no different, because it is common for them to make mistakes too. It is essential for parents to convey the right message to the child when she makes a mistake. Where some parents might want to confront their child, others might want to address the reason behind the error. If you are looking for the different ways in which you can give out the right message to your child, read on.
How Can Parents' Reactions Affect Kids?
Seldom do parents pay heed to the fact that their reactions to their child’s mistakes can affect their child in more ways than one. A parent's reaction can help a child gain perspective towards a problem or mistake that she may face in her life.
In some studies conducted on several parents and their children, it was found that the way a child views intelligence is greatly influenced by her parent’s reaction to her failures. In other words, a child's acceptance of her mistakes in a positive or negative manner is influenced by the way her parents view the same mistake.
How to Respond Correctly When Your Child Makes Mistakes
Failures are a part of life and not the end of the world; therefore, it is vital for parents to respond correctly to their child’s mistakes. Next time your kiddo makes a mistake, try responding in some of the following ways to help her overcome a setback:
1. Lay Emphasis on the Future
There is no point in sulking about the mistake that has already been made. Instead, what is important is to focus on what lies ahead. Explain to your child that there is a lot she will learn from her mistake, and she may not commit the same mistake in the future.
2. Pay Heed to Your Child’s Reaction
Some children may be content with the effort they put in, but others may feel too hurt from a setback. It is crucial that you let your child vent out her feelings, get over the setback, and plan out the best way to move ahead.
3. Never Pity Your Child
You can empathize, but don't pity your child. When you pity your child, you are possibly indicating that you doubt her capabilities, which can impact her negatively. Instead, focus on what went wrong and try to fix it.
4. Pay Heed to the Effort and Not the Outcome
Every child is different and what matters is that you teach her to put in efforts. The outcome may be different for every child, and therefore, the focus should not entirely be on the outcome or the result, but the fact that your child had put in hard work.
5. Be an Observer
Sometimes when a child makes a mistake, she may be aware of what went wrong. She may even know how to mend it or deal with the situation. During such times, it becomes important for the parent to become an observer and see how their child tries to amend her mistakes. Letting the child deal with her problems in an effective way of showing that you trust her to make her own decisions.
6. Let Your Child Ask for Help
As parents, we have this innate need of coming to our child's immediate rescue when we see her dealing with a problem. However, sometimes it's important to exercise restraint and not intrude in your child's business until she asks for your help. Let your child come to you for help before offering her a solution on your own.
7. Drift Away from the Problem for a While
Sometimes it may be in the best interest of your child to forget and set aside the problem for a while. You can indulge in some fun activities, such as going to the park, a movie, a shopping spree or anything that takes away the focus from the problem, so you can come back to it with a fresh take and solution.
8. Never Shame Your Child
Do not use hurtful words or shame your child for her mistakes or failures. This can adversely affect the psyche of a child. Always be encouraging and supportive towards your kid. No one ever likes to make mistakes, and the same applies to children - constantly nagging or reminding them of their mistakes may scar their young minds for life.
9. Reassure Your Child With Your Love
It is especially during difficult times that one needs to feel loved and reassured, and know that their loved ones are always beside them. Show her your love and compassion before looking for the solution to her mistake - your reassuring words will help your child sail through smoothly through difficult moments.
It may be difficult for the parents to see their child making a mistake and then dealing with the consequences, but your reaction may help your child a great deal in handling her mistakes.

Breastfeeding and Motherhood - My Experiences
When we decided to get pregnant, my thoughts were highly driven by my mother and grandmother who said that once the baby is born, breastfeeding is the most essential part and the only way to get your child a strong immune system. Since I hadn't experienced it, I was not sure - but when Avyaan was born, my inner feeling was so strong that I couldnt help but fed my baby! My doctor suggested ONLY breastfeeding, which, since then, became a part of my daily routine. A lot of people around me said to go for formula milk, but it was clear in my head that breastfeeding is the only thing I wanted to give my child until 6 months of age.
Honestly, it didn't matter who was looking or where I was when I fed Avyaan...I fed him in the car while my husband was driving, I fed him almost everywhere without any guilt on my face. All that mattered to me was his stomach feeling full. My husband was a huge support; he understood the need of this and pushed me to go the extra mile with Avyaan. I joined work after 6 months but I made sure to express milk before I left and to come back and feed him. This has been my daily routine. Avyaan turned 1 year old on August 9th, and I'm a proud feeding mother even today! This is me encouraging all the women out there. Continue as you are!
I had a life before my son was born, but I can't remember what it was like! Having my son was such a life-altering experience. I always was looking for a purpose in my life, and I found it when I had my son. I love being a mother. Now, I know I'm good at it. This doesn't mean I don't make my share of mistakes - there are times when I need guidance and a go-to person. I wouldn't trade my best day before my son for the worst day with him!
