Is It Safe to Eat Spicy Food during Breastfeeding?
Fans of spicy food items are aplenty in our country. You might be one of those as well who can gorge on the spiciest dishes, while others would be drinking glasses of water and having sweets to calm their taste-buds. The advent of pregnancy might have cut this short for you but now that your baby is out of your body, going for them might seem like a possibility. But if, through the breastmilk, your baby eats what you eat , it might make you wonder if eating them is an option after all.
Can a Nursing Mother Eat Spicy Food?
Typically, it is pretty safe to eat spicy food items even when you are nursing your child. A small amount of those will find their way to your baby but that wouldn’t affect the child adversely. Don’t overdo with spicy eating and maintain a healthy diet balance at all costs. Many child nutritionists have observed that women who have had a range of food items while nursing their children have experienced fewer issues with getting their children to try different food items later in life.
Does Spicy Food Affect Breast Milk?
Does spicy food make breast milk spicy as well? That’s pretty much the very first question most nursing mothers have when they think of having spicy food while breastfeeding.
And it is quite a valid one since babies who are on formula-based milk rarely get to experience a change in taste. For breastmilk, since its very taste is a result of what the mother eats, the flavours from your diet can trickle down to the breast milk, giving your child a newly flavoured breast milk. This could also mean that your little one might want more of the newly tasting milk if he develops an affinity to it.
This acts as a pretty good precursor for your baby before you introduce him to the world of solids and the variety of flavours. The tastebuds begin to experience the presence of different flavours and start responding to them. At times, you might notice that your baby likes a particular flavour because you consumed that food item quite often when you were pregnant.
Negative Effects Of Spicy Food On Breastfed Babies
Not all babies tend to like the change in flavour, whereas some could be quite sensitive to it, too. A few possible negative effects that spicy food could have on your little one are:
1. Development Of A Spice Allergy
The chances of these are quite rare yet such an allergy could crop up once in a while in a particular baby. A typical sign usually makes itself evident if you’ve consumed something spicy, and the baby showing rashes on the skin. You can go by trial-and-error and take a break before eating that same spice again. If it persists, then the allergy would be confirmed and its best to avoid it until the baby is weaned.
2. Suffering From Colic Pain
This stomach ache is predominantly present in young babies. Colic is a condition that affects the abdomen and causes a lot of discomfort to the child, leading to bouts of crying uncontrollably due to the ache. Many times, consumption of spicy food could trigger an occurrence.
3. Gas-Related Problems In The Stomach
For certain babies, consuming milk that has traces of spices in it can be unwelcome by the digestive system. This results in the formation of gas in the stomach and the intestine. The baby will pass flatulence more often than before, causing him to be irritated throughout.
4. Increased Appetite For A Particular Flavour
Though increased appetite is a good thing for mothers and babies alike, this is especially for the specific flavour of milk. On consuming a particular spice, the baby might tend to develop an affinity for it and drink a lot of milk than before and feed for longer durations. This could cause him to eat beyond his capacity and lead to puking it out, or get fussy and stubborn when the flavour of the milk changes or if he doesn’t get it in the extra amount.
How To Figure Out If Your Baby Is Sensitive To Spicy Food?
Specific signs can be helpful in understanding your baby’s sensitivity towards spicy food. Most of those are depicted by:
Uncontrollably crying after drinking breastmilk with spice traces in it
Consistent diarrhoea, especially after the mother eats something spicy and nurses the child
Broken sleep cycle right after feeding on spicy breastmilk and waking up soon
Refusal to have breastmilk especially after you have had a different food item
Rashes and hives occurring on the skin of your baby
Does Eating Spicy Food While Breastfeeding Benefit Babies?
If your baby doesn’t show sensitivity to the presence of spices in breastmilk, then there’s nothing like it. There are quite a few benefits to reap from following that diet, namely:
1. Easy Weaning
As your baby starts approaching an age of trying out solids and slowly letting go of breastmilk, many babies have difficulty making that switch since they find the new flavours too strong. Spicy food introduces these flavours through the breastmilk in the right form, allowing the taste buds to be stimulated and making it easier for your child to be weaned later on.
2. Great Taste Recognition
Early exposure to any aspect of life can stay with the baby for longer. When taste buds are stimulated through breastmilk with spice traces in it, your baby will be skilful enough to detect the flavour he likes from the variety of food items and be open to trying out different items as well.
3. Strengthen The Stomach
The introduction of new tastes, flavours and food items is quite a challenge to the newly matured stomach. To assist with this, consuming spicy food helps the stomach to be exposed to such ingredients in a minimal form. The digestive system begins to handle them gradually and turns out being stronger than before once solids are introduced.
4. Adapting A Better Diet Early In Life
Setting newly weaned babies on a good diet of solids can be quite a task. The convenience and comfort of milk can be hard to let go of. Consuming spicy foods makes it easy to not just wean them off it, but help them establish a good diet plan, too.
What Is The Right Time For Breastfeeding Mother To Start Eating Spicy Food?
Since we may not be aware how long does spicy food stay in breast milk, it is necessary to know the right time to introduce the same to your baby as well. Many women tend to begin having it post delivery in minimal amounts. It is best to delay the consumption of spicy food until your baby is used to breastfeeding properly and develops his health and immunity to a good level. In this way, in case your baby does suffer an allergic reaction, he won’t have to suffer due to it and can recover quickly, too.
Do Infants Like Garlic-Flavored Breast Milk?
Eating garlic does tend to introduce the taste of garlic in the breastmilk. Many incidents have shown babies to have a huge affinity for the taste of garlic, leading them to stay latched on to the breast for longer durations and feed a lot of milk than before.
Returning to eating spicy food and enjoying those flavours is quite a welcome after the journey of pregnancy. However, it is best to delay this for a few months until your baby is well established with breastfeeding. Starting it in moderation can help both you and the child develop the taste for a beautiful cuisine all over again.

How to Choose Apricots for Your Baby
Note these points before you buy apricots for your baby.
Dried Apricots
Buy organic dried apricots.
If you are not buying organic apricots, then make sure there is no sulphur dioxide used to retain the orange colour in non-organic apricots. Sulphur dioxide can cause allergies and respiratory problems in babies.
Organic apricots are darker than the non-organic ones, so the darker the better.
Canned Apricots
Choose canned apricots which are not dipped in syrup because that would be too much of unwanted sugar for your baby.
If buying canned apricot fruit juice, go for the one which does not have sugar.
Fresh Apricots
Look for the ones that have a golden colour and are firm.
Avoid buying apricots that are pale yellow or greenish yellow.
Apricots which are very soft and mushy or look shrivelled should not be bought.
How to Store Apricots for Baby Food
Here are a few tips to store apricots:
Keep it in the refrigerator to avoid over-ripening of the fruit. In this way, you can keep it fresh for a week.
If you have left-over of the mashed apricot or puree, refrigerate it in non-BPA containers for 3-4 days.
Do You Need to Peel Apricots for Your Baby?
There is no real need to peel an apricot before giving it to your baby as a finger food or even making a puree of it. The peel of the fruit is velvety in texture and absolutely edible. However, if you do not want your baby to eat the fruit with the outer cover, you can peel it. The easiest way is to put the fruit in boiling water for some time and then dip it in ice water. This procedure will loosen the peel and help it to come off easily.
How to Cook Apricots for Baby Food
Baking apricots are one way to cook them. You need to cut apricots into two halves, remove the seed and keep the cut side down in a baking dish filled with about 1 inch of water. Bake at a temperature of 400°F until the fruit becomes soft.
The other way is by steaming the apricots or putting the fruits in boiling water for a few minutes. After taking the apricots out from the water, run them under cold water and the skin of the fruit easily gets peeled. You can either cut them lengthwise and give your baby as a finger food or mash it up roughly and feed her using a spoon.
Can Apricots Cause Allergies in Babies?
Apricot allergy is rare but it does happen. In case your baby is allergic to apricots, the tongue, lips, face or throat swells up and there may also be a tingling sensation in the mouth. Some children may also suffer severe respiratory problem called anaphylaxis.
In case your baby has birch pollen allergy, eating apricots may cause oral allergy syndrome. Even babies who have had apricots without any problem earlier can suddenly suffer symptoms like itching and irritation of the mouth and throat. However, the symptoms usually subside on its own in most cases in this kind of allergy. In few, the symptoms may persist and aggravate to something severe as anaphylaxis.
We may also come across some children who may suffer from colic after eating apricots. However, this is not because of an apricot allergy, it is a sign of intolerance to apricots. It only means that your baby is unable to digest apricots.
Precautions to Take while Giving Apricots to Infants
Listed below are some precautions that you should take before introducing an apricot into your baby’s diet.
A time gap of about a week to two weeks is mandatory in between introducing a new food. By doing so, you will know whether your baby is allergic to a certain food or not. In case of an apricot allergy, the baby will show signs like swelling of the face, tongue, lips, throat, and tingling sensation of the mouth and in case of apricot intolerance, the baby may suffer from loose motion or constipation, nausea, stomach ache, bloating and uneasiness.
If you have kept mashed apricot or puree in the freezer, wait until it thaws and gets back to the room temperature. You should refrain from giving babies anything straight out of the freezer. It is best to give fresh fruit to your baby instead of giving stale fruits.
Nowadays every fruit that we buy from the market is mostly grown with the help of pesticides. Therefore it is imperative to not just wash the fruit in running water but keep the fruit dipped in water for a good half an hour or more before giving it to your little one.
Always give ripe apricots to your baby since unripe ones give out toxins which may cause health problems to your baby.
To retain its orange colour, dried apricots are treated with sulphur dioxide which can be toxic to the baby. Therefore, before giving dried apricots to your baby, always soak it in water for at least half an hour.

20 Fascinating Facts about Spiders for Kids
Spiders are all around us, which are why it is an amazing topic for children to learn. Many children are scared of spiders, but that will reduce when they learn these fun facts about spiders. Your children will love these incredible spider web facts.
20 Interesting Spider Facts & Information for Children
Here are some spider facts for preschoolers.
Spiders have two body segments, so they are called the arachnids. They cannot be categorized as insects. Other arachnids include ticks, mites, and scorpions.
Due to loss of habitat, many spiders are disappearing and becoming endangered. Just like large animals, spiders are valuable to the world. But most people do not realize this.
An average human adult is more than 250000 times heavier than a normal spider.
Not every web we see is spiral shaped. Certain types of spider create webs of shapes of tunnels or dense sheets. For instance, grass spiders form funnel-shaped webs, which are not sticky. These spiders build a web on top of the grass.
Spiders move their legs inwards and towards their body using their muscles. But the spiders cannot pull their legs outwards using muscles.
To move their legs out, body water is pumped to each of the legs. This is why spiders sometimes curl up because it has lost too much water for outward movement.
Spiders have eight eyes, but most of them cannot see properly. These spiders feel to know what their webs have caught.
Spiders lay and store the eggs in an egg sac in order to keep the eggs safe.
Spiders never try to go after people, but they defend themselves by biting. Some bites of spiders are poisonous, but most of them do not affect the human body. It might only have effects like getting stung by a bee or getting bitten by a mosquito. However, spiders can catch insects like wasps, which are harmful to us.
The hairs present on the first pair of legs of the spider are sensitive to taste. This is how the spider tastes its prey by simply touching them with this pair of legs.
‘Arachnophobia’ is the term used for the fear of spiders.
Some spiders hunt their prey and pounce. Most spiders spin webs so they can catch other prey to eat, but not every spider does this.
Spiders have a small mouth, which is why they do not eat their prey. Instead, the spiders put chemicals on and into the body of their prey to change the body into a liquid. The spider then sucks this liquid up.
Some smaller or younger spiders use their silk to travel around in the air. This floating in the air is called ballooning. The wind catches their shooting silk helping these spiders drift to a possible home.
Many types of spiders live on land. But some spiders like raft spiders live on and in water. Such spiders can move across the surface of the water.
Spiders can build a web in an hour, and they normally build a new one each day.
From the spinneret glands present in the abdomen, spiders create silk. This is to create webs and catch prey.
Some spiders like the tarantulas are kept as pets in many families.
The smallest spider is the Patu marplesi found in Samoa (in the South Pacific Ocean).
The largest spiders are the tarantulas. Goliath tarantula is the largest tarantula.
Spiders are mostly blamed for all kinds of rashes, bumps, and growth. However, these creatures do not feed on human blood, so they have no reason to bite us unless they feel threatened. This spider information for kids is a great way of educating children.
