Baby Hair Removal Home Remedies
Some mothers worry about what seems like excess body hair on their babies. Although it is natural and mostly determined by genes, they may want to remove it for cosmetic reasons. It is common to use natural remedies to remove body hair, and several methods have been in use for generations that are mostly safe.
Easy Home Remedies for Infant Hair Removal
Before you get to removing body hair on your baby, it is important to understand why they have it and what happens to it eventually. Read further to understand all about the baby’s body hair and its removal methods.
The body hair that your baby is born with will clear up in a few months. Elders do suggest massaging them gently to help it shed faster, or you could just let nature take its course. However, if you’re short on time, you can try some of the home remedies to help your newborn get rid of body hair. Home remedies use milk, turmeric, flour, turmeric and other household ingredients that have no harmful chemicals. Although there is no scientific evidence that they work effectively in removing body hair, they have been used for a long time by the elders.
Ayurvedic Atta Rubbing
This is one of the best ayurvedic newborn hair removal methods and uses simple ingredients. Rubbing dough is made from atta (flour), turmeric and almond oil. Whole-wheat flour is preferable as it is rich in Vitamin-E which is a powerful anti-oxidant needed by the body. Almond oil is a good moisturizer and soothes the rubbing process by acting as a lubricant. Wheat flour is gentle on the skin and improves your baby’s complexion. Using a little water, all the ingredients are kneaded into a soft dough ball. This dough is dipped into the hot almond oil before rubbing on the baby’s skin. Cover all the parts such as forehead shoulder and the back and rub gently.
Turmeric and Milk
A mixture of turmeric and milk can be applied to the baby all over the body after their massaging session. Let the mixture dry and then remove it using a soft cloth dipped in milk. Give the baby a bath after the procedure without using any soap or body wash. Milk acts as a cleansing agent, and hence there is no use for a cleanser. This is a gentle way to remove baby body hair naturally and get them to shed sooner.
Ubtan
Ubtan is made using gram flour, milk and a pinch of turmeric powder. The ingredients are finely mixed together and applied to the baby before they are given a massage. Ubtan is a safe way for facial hair removal for babies. The milk can also be substituted with yoghurt or cream. Along with removing excess hair, ubtan also acts as a moisturizer and improves complexion.
Other Methods to Remove Baby Body Hair
Mix chandan powder and a pinch of turmeric with milk and apply on the hairy areas. Remove paste gently by rubbing it and do this before bath.
Massage the baby with a paste made out of almonds, yellow mustard and turmeric.
Dip a piece of bread in unboiled milk and massage over the baby’s body regularly to remove hair.
After the baby’s massage, make a paste of baby cream and powdered red masoor dal. Apply it to the hairy areas and massage baby.
Tips to Follow When Using the Hair Removal Methods
Go easy on the baby’s delicate skin. Vigorously washing or scrubbing can irritate the skin. It can also lead to abrasion and cause rashes, bruises and allergies.
Go with what your baby is comfortable. Having a dried up paste being rubbed and washed off can be an uncomfortable experience for the baby.
Be cautious with raw milk. It can carry pathogens that can causes infections such as diarrhoea and dysentery.
Although some of these methods temporarily remove hair, you may notice they grow back after sometime. Give it time to thin out on its own.
Home remedies when used regularly are a good and safe way to remove your baby’s body hair as they grow older.

Jaundice in Babies - Occurrence and Treatment (Personal Experience)
It is common for a new baby to contract jaundice. There's a 50% chance that bilirubin levels of the baby are more than normal (normal range 0 - 10.5). If bilirubin levels are 11.5 - 12.5, you need not put your baby under hospital care which is mostly phototherapy.
Phototherapy is a process of exposing the baby to blue lights from halogen lamps so that the bilirubin oxidises and is removed via urine. Urine will only be generated if you feed him from the first hour of his birth. Milk doesn't get generated in the breast of a mother for 2-3 days after the birth of the baby, so you need to feed the baby powder milk. The best is NAN PRO 1. Doctors in a few hospitals don't recommend powder milk but only breast milk, which is wrong advice as the baby needs feed to get rid of jaundice via urine.
In my case, I did not feed my baby for 36 hrs as doctors didn't want me to give powder milk and breast milk was not being produced. This fiasco reduced my baby’s weight from 2.77 to 2.50 kg in 36 hrs and the baby was sleeping all the time. The doctor’s advice was wrong and the baby suffered from jaundice.
Now If you do give hospital care at low levels of bilirubin and your baby’s bilirubin level comes down to 9, there is still a 50% chance that jaundice will happen a second time. If their eyes and skin turn yellow, then phototherapy is a must and urgent. In our case, it rebounded to bilirubin level of 19.8 which was very high and got us worried because at levels of more than 25 bilirubin level your baby can have kernicterus. Google it and you will come to know how bad it is. Bilirubin at levels more than 25 can pass the plasma layer and cause brain damage.
So be careful with jaundice treatment. The only care that you can provide at home to your newborn baby is keeping him cosy, exposing him to early sunlight, feeding him every two hours (very important). Every feed should be 40 ml. If you think the baby is overfed, no problem, he will burp it out. Overfeeding is better than underfeeding. So take care of your baby, ask as many questions as you can and do your own research. If any questions, then comment on this blog.

9 Things You Do Unintentionally Under Stress and How to Stop Them
Stress affects us all. We all feel stressed from time to time, which is normal because it is our body’s reaction to harmful or dangerous situations - whether real or imagined. Whenever you sense impending danger or find yourself in such a situation, a physiological reaction occurs in your body. This reaction is known as the ‘fight-or-flight’ response or the ‘acute stress response’, which is triggered by the sudden release of hormones that prepares you to deal with the situation or run away from it. When stressed, your breathing may quicken, your blood pressure may rise, and your heart rate may increase - these are some of the common signs of stress. But there are some often-overlooked signs of stress, or rather, signs that develop into a habit as forms of coping mechanisms for stress.
9 Things You Do When You are Stressed
When you have been feeling stressed out for a while, you tend to develop your own unique ways to deal with it - knowingly or unknowingly. Here are some of these ways that you might have adopted to deal with stress.
1. Yawning Excessively
It’s a well-known fact that stress can take a toll on the quality of your sleep, but what you might not know is that it (stress) can also make you yawn frequently. As you lie awake in bed, finding it hard to turn off your busy mind (probably worrying about some business meeting or why your baby’s diaper is ‘too clean’ since the past two days!), your sleep gets compromised. As a result, you may feel exhausted and experience stress-based fatigue. And this exhaustion and stress can make you yawn continuously. The more anxious you get, the more likely you are to yawn. Sometimes, yawning during stress episodes can indicate signs of breathing trouble as well. People who are stressed feel that they are experiencing trouble with breathing; hence, they yawn in order to get some air.
2. Eating Sugary Foods
Stress can make you crave foods high in sugar and fats. But we are not blaming you or making you feel guilty for craving sugary foods because it’s not your fault - it's cortisol, the stress hormone, which has been linked to cravings for sugar and fat. Stress can tax your body’s energy resources, thus making it demand high-energy foods, which can be quickly converted to blood sugar (which your body needs to keep going). And you may give in to your temptation just like that and enjoy such foods. The next time you feel the urge to binge on waffles, gulab jamun, or rasmalai, know that it is because of stress; however, control the urge to eat sugary foods every day because you know it well that giving into a moment of temptation can make you feel guilty later.
3. Fidgeting
Has anyone ever told you to stop fidgeting or tapping your foot, while you didn’t even notice that you were doing it? If yes, then you were probably doing so because of stress. Fidgeting is another response to stress or anxiety. When stressed, people tend to fidget, i.e., they might shake their legs, tap their foot, crack their knuckles, interlock their fingers, etc. Sometimes, these habits may get too obvious to hide, leading to others noticing you.
4. Obsessing Over Little Details
There are many people who obsess over little details when they are stressed. If you are overthinking something that you wouldn’t otherwise give a second thought to, you might be doing it because of stress. You may also focus on a problem for a long time, keep contemplating about it, and even envisage its potential ramifications, thus worrying yourself more.
5. Grinding Your Teeth
Teeth grinding or clenching of teeth is a common but not-so-apparent sign of anxiety and stress. Clenching of teeth is associated with emotional instability. People usually grind their teeth when at rest or at night when they are asleep, and hence, they might not be aware of it. However, if this habit continues for long, it might result in flattened, chipped, or loose teeth. If you have chipped teeth, it could be because of teeth grinding, although it’s just one of the possible reasons. To be sure, you can visit a dentist; he will let you know whether the cause is your response to stress or something else.
6. Cleaning and Organising
If you are someone who comes home from work stressing over something your boss or co-worker said, and start cleaning your house or organising your drawing room, you might be doing it to de-stress. While most people associate cleaning with drudgery, there are some who look at it as a form of relaxation. The reason why some people clean when they are stressed is because it makes them feel that they have a sense of control over something in life, if not every situation. For example, you may not be able to argue with your boss or your in-laws, but doing small tasks like wiping down your kitchen counter or organising your wardrobe may make you feel calm. These activities may have soothing effects on you just like that of meditation.
7. Biting Your Nails
If you chomp on your nails and feel embarrassed when someone points it out, there’s no need to feel ashamed, because you are not alone. There are many out there who bite their nails for different reasons without even realising it. One of the potential reasons could be stress. Nail biting is often associated with anxiety because the act of chewing on nails provides relief from stress or tension. If you bite your nails when stressed, you may also do so when nervous, bored, or hungry. Although this habit won’t do any major permanent damage, it’s best to give it up, as it can damage the skin around your nails and harm your teeth. Furthermore, it can also increase the risks of colds and other infections by transferring germs from your fingers to your mouth.
8. Biting Your Lips
Biting your lips (particularly the lower lip) when stressed is extremely common. Similar to skin picking or playing with your hair, biting your lips is another example of a body-focused repetitive behaviour (BRBF). BRBF is basically an umbrella term for any repetitive behaviour that can damage your physical appearance. If you bite your lips unintentionally and too frequently to the point that you don’t even notice anymore, you are perhaps doing it to cope with an uncomfortable situation.
9. Pulling Your Hair
Many people unconsciously pull their hair when they get anxious. If you are working on a deadline or are dead-worried about something, you may unknowingly pull your hair out. Although people might think that you are just playing with your hair, that’s not the case. Pulling, twirling or touching the hair, and even tucking hair behind the ears repeatedly are all signs of anxiety or stress. Although this habit is more of a self-soothing behaviour, if not controlled in time, it can take on a severe form, where you might pull your hair out until it breaks, a condition also known as ‘trichotillomania’.
How to Deal With These Habits
All these stress-related habits are basically different types of coping mechanisms, but that does not mean you should continue with them. Some of these habits can have adverse effects on your health in the long run, which is why, you should try to give these up. And don’t you worry, we are here to help if you are struggling hard to give up your stress-related habit. Here’s how you can deal with your habits that give away your nervousness.
1. For Yawning – Now you know that stress and stress-related fatigue can make you yawn continuously. You might also feel that you are not getting enough air, hence you may breathe through your mouth – taking air in as much as possible. However, breathing through your mouth can make your brain warm, which researchers believe makes one yawn. To deal with this habit, breathe deeply through your nose as it will help cool your brain. Other than this, you can also drink water to stop yourself from yawning.
2. For Stress-eating - It’s too easy to fall into the trap of stress-eating unconsciously, but you need to stop it if you want to stay healthy and fit. When your hand reaches your drawer to grab another cookie, remind yourself that it’s the cortisol hormone in play and not hunger. You can also sip on something containing cinnamon as it can help curb your sugar cravings. Another thing you can try to keep the thoughts of sugary and fried foods away is distraction. You can draw something or doodle to keep your mind busy. You can even try colouring, as it is known to provide relief from stress and reduce anxiety levels.
3. For Fidgeting - If you notice that you are fidgeting, it’s time to take action. If you fidget with your hands, fold your hands. You can also try the rubber band technique, which also works to break other habits like nail biting or hair pulling. What you can do is put a loose rubber band around your wrist. Whenever you start fidgeting or have the urge to pull your hair or bite your nails, snap the rubber band on your wrist. We know this method sounds a bit cruel, but it may work. When you will feel the discomfort of wearing a rubber band constantly, you’ll soon want to give up the habit. However, don’t make it a habit to snap the rubber band on your wrist every time you are nervous or anxious, as you might develop a habit of hurting yourself.
4. For Teeth Grinding - To stop yourself from clenching your teeth while asleep, you can soak a washcloth in warm water, wring it, then place it on your jaw. Warm water can help relax your jaw muscles. However, if these tricks don’t help, consult a dentist before it gets severe.
5. For Nail Biting - To stop yourself from biting your nails, you can cut them short or get a manicure. This way, you will have pretty nails, and in order to keep them that way, you might just give up the habit of biting them.
6. For Your Obsessions - While cleaning and having an eye for detail are fine, if you overdo it to an extent that it causes conflicts with your loved ones, then this stress-related habit of yours might be bordering on obsessive or compulsive cleaning, which is a sign of an obsessive-compulsive disorder. You must deal with it in time by seeking professional help, if distraction techniques don’t work.
If you are speculating about every detail or cleaning obsessively because of stress, take a deep breath, relax, and focus on what is actually troubling you. Look for ways to deal with it. Even if you don’t find any solutions, it’s okay, you’ll get it. Give it time. Furthermore, take some time out for yourself. Make time for your hobbies and just do anything relaxing to distract yourself, without setting any goals for that activity. Just don’t obsess over that activity too – sometimes, messes and imperfections are fine.
These stress-related habits can become embarrassing and may affect your health - both mental and physical health - in the long run. Hence, you need to take care of them in time. Try the above-mentioned tips to let go off these harmful habits. We know getting over these habits is easier said than done and surely won’t happen overnight, but if you try without giving up midway, you will! And if you notice no difference and rather, your problems and these habits are getting worse and unstoppable, it’s best to seek help as quickly as possible.

Harry Potter’s Birthday Celebration Ideas – A Day full of Magic!
As this month’s last weekend kicks off on Friday, July 31, kids and grown-ups around the world will jubilate the birthday of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter – one of the most beloved characters in the history of fantasy literature. On this day, give your kids a magical adventure of their own and a taste of the spectral life at Hogwarts, the Wizarding School. Grab your best wand and these tips to pull off this party with ease!
The game plan is to let the little ones feel like they’ve left the “muggle” world behind via the Hogwarts Express. If this sounds strange to you and you are asking “Who is Harry Potter?” - maybe this is the perfect opportunity for you and your family to deep dive into the Harry Potter books and movies. If your family is already a fan, go ahead and theme everything with Harry Potter’s birthday celebration ideas. After all, magic is for all ages!
1. Invitations
Send a fun and interesting invite; you can print them out in the same font used on the covers of Harry Potter books and sign it as “Minerva McGonagall” (the Hogwarts headmistress) to create an authentic effect. Scribble “Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry” on the envelopes in the ‘from’ section. These fonts are available in online tutorials that also provide directions to make the perfect Harry Potter themed party invite.
2. Decor
Decorating your house for the party will be fun, with so many creative options to pull out from the books and movies! Start at your front door with a sign for Platform 9-3/4, just like the one Harry and his friends used to find the train to Hogwarts. Inside, consider making banners for each of the Hogwarts houses and paint or print out old pictures in gaudy frames like the ones in the Great Hall from the movies. It’s really easy to create wands by using small sticks and painting them brown unevenly. Why not get your husband and kids to help with this?
3. Food
To keep this party going, you're going to need a lot of food! Start with Butterbeer, the staple lager of young wizards and witches, with many child friendly recipes available online. Prepare the cold drink cups beforehand with a little food colouring at the bottom and cover them with ice. Wave your wand over the cup as the kids pour in clear fizzy drinks. Say a magical spell and voila! the drink will change colour. Don’t forget to include a “Happy Birthday Harry” cake in the end, as it’s a birthday celebration after all.
4. Activities
Why not arrange some fun “classes” the Hogwarts way? Be it Potions, or History of Magical Creatures, every Hogwarts subject teaches us important lessons. Demonstrate a classic volcano eruption by mixing baking soda and vinegar, but put a magic spin in it- use test tubes and lab flasks like Professor Snape! Walk into Hagrid’s big shoes as you organize a treasure hunt with clues to find hidden miniatures of animals. The clues are nothing but the very characteristics of those animals, whose names the children will have to guess, and accordingly the location too. You can also have a Sorting Hat ceremony, where each person has to take their turn under the crazy sorting hat to be placed in a Hogwarts house.
5. Movie Marathon
In case your popular young one has way too many friends for you to handle, fret not. An easy solution is organizing a Harry Potter movie marathon! Remember to keep the number of kids limited to the space that you have in your home. Pick the movies you want to screen and keep the kids engaged during the screening with some magical trivia. What kind of feather is in Harry's wand? What is the name of the town where Harry's aunt and uncle lived? At the end, give away magical Chocolate Frogs to the winner.
There are also several other parties you could throw, like a crafts night, where the kids make handmade decorations or wands, or an outdoor play evening, where the kids split up into teams for a game of Quidditch using hula hoops attached to poles. Involve your child while making these arrangements and he’ll love it. This July 31, Harry Potter’s birth date, forget being a grown up and create some unforgettable memories with your little one! How to Work When Everything Else is at Centrestage!
When that to-do list piles up in and outside of work, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Everyone’s work is important except yours right? When everything else is at center stage it’s important to prioritize your tasks so you don’t end up in a stew.
You know that sinking feeling when you wake up knowing you have 101 things to do at work and at home, but not knowing where to begin? You’ve got to start somewhere so instead of letting that feeling get to you, try to stay afloat by incorporating these simple tactics in your daily routine to help you take control.
Control Your Workload Before it Takes Control of You
1. Don’t Rely on Your Memory
You may have a superb memory but sometmes it can let you down. Always prioritize your tasks by keeping a to-do list because you can count on that to help you get through the day. With your hectic schedule of getting everyone ready for school and work in the morning, it may not be possible to make one as soon as you're up. So when you reach work, take 5 minutes to compose yourself and jot down all that needs to be done. Then divide it into what needs immediate attention and that which can wait. At the end of the day take another 5 minutes to jot down things that need tending to at home and then accomplish them.
2. Stick to a Schedule
At work, it’s best to create a time schedule and stick to it daily. If you’ve got a flood of emails to answer to everyday, set aside a time in the day to do so. Give yourself 24 hours to reply to each response that comes in thereafter and make sure you respond within that interval. Create a calendar list of all upcoming events as seeing everything in one place will foster the ability to prioritize work according to the order of events landing you on top of your game.
3. Ask Yourself, What is More Important?
At work, you'll find colleagues and superiors dumping you with work till there’s no room to breathe. Deep breathe nonetheless, asking yourself whose work is more important. It’s the first step in learning how to prioritize workload. The work of your reporting authority is always more important, everyone else can wait. So once you’re done with that, move onto the next.
4. Get Rid of Clutter
Why is it important to prioritize? If you leave little things on your table to attend to bigger matters, you’re not going to make much headway. Leaving all the small stuff for later will only clutter your table, which is the sign of a cluttered mind. It reflects a disorganised persona. Get all the little things out of the way. It'll surely ease the workload and your mind, keeping you free to attend to other important things.
When you find ways to prioritize your time you will be in a much better position to steer your own ship. It’s all about being organised and maintaining a certain discipline at work and at home. Most importantly, learn to be honest with yourself and your capabilities. Don’t take on more than you can handle for that will be your undoing. Read more
