Using Postpartum Waist Trainer – Benefits and Precautions
It’s not uncommon to see celebrity moms back in their perfect shape within weeks of giving birth, what’s their secret? Wearing waist trainers. In this era of people going for perfect body shape, the age-old method of waist training has turned into a go-to remedy to shed the postpartum belly.
What is Waist Training?
Waist training is an old method of tightly binding or wrapping the midsection of the body from the bottom of your ribs to the lower waist with a supportive band or a corset with the aim of gradually decreasing the natural waist. The process is thought to reshape the waist leading to slimming in women who are looking for a perfectly shaped waist. There are also claims that waist trainers promote heat in the abdomen, which causes perspiration and fat loss.
After birth, the changes in hormones and fluid content in the body can cause retention of water in the abdomen. The accumulated water takes about two weeks to dissipate and two more weeks for the rest to subside. Meanwhile, it can take up to six weeks for the uterus to shrink from the size of a watermelon to its normal size. All this occurs naturally along with belly shrinkage whether women wear waist trainers or not. However, waist training is thought to speed up the process and help women shrink their belly sooner.
The rationale behind waist training after delivery is that during pregnancy, the body releases a hormone called relaxin that softens the ligaments and cartilages. It helps during the final weeks of pregnancy to allow for increased flexibility to help with the passage of the baby through the birth canal. Wearing belly support such as a wrap or a band helps to stabilise the pelvis and keep it steadily in shape so that it stops shifting and heals. The advantages of this are that women can resume exercise sooner to return to their normal function and pre-pregnancy shape.
What are Post-baby Waist Trainers Made of?
Post-baby waist trainers come in many designs, and they are made of all types of materials such as spandex and latex with cotton, nylon or lycra added to the fabric. Here are some of the types:
1. Belly Wraps
Belly wraps are the simplest of the waist trainers and are usually a wide adjustable elastic band that wraps around your abdomen from below the ribs to the top of the waist. They provide gentle compression which can often be adjusted with a Velcro tightener, and several designs are available for pregnant women. These are not as intense as corsets or waist trainers, but they offer excellent support right after birth for the first week or two until you’re ready to upgrade.
2. Abdominal Compression Binder
Abdominal compression binders are a commonly used device used after surgery to stabilise the abdomen. They feature no-frills bands with adjustable compression that generally work with Velcro. Although it’s a general medical device which is not specific to postpartum mothers, it can be used as a support for the abdomen as part of waist training.
3. Waist Trainers/Cinchers
Waist trainers are tighter, designed to apply more pressure on the abdomen using zippers or hook-and-eye closures. These are the ones commonly seen on celebrities, and they can be worn under the regular dress or when you’re at home working. They cover the midsection of your body from under the breasts to the top of the hips. Cinchers are often made of latex of stiff materials that are reinforced with plastic or metal boning. Their purpose is to apply extra firm compression and drastically reduce the size of the waist. They can be worn a month after giving birth anywhere from one to eight hours a day, depending on your comfort. You can see results in about a month if you wear it for eight hours a day and follow a healthy diet. Cinchers can also be worn while working out.
4. Corsets
Corsets apply a much stronger compression than waist trainers or belly wraps. They contain steel bones in them which are tightened using laces. Corsets are meant for body sculpting using high compression. They would feel uncomfortable in the beginning, therefore, should only be used in later stages when you’re ready to upgrade from all of the above. They can be worn for an hour or two a day until you get used to them and then move to eight or twelve hours over the months.
Benefits of Using Waist Trainers after Pregnancy?
Using a waist trainer after delivery has a number of benefits for postpartum women. Here are some:
1. Improves Shape of Your Waist
Most new moms would wish to lose their baby pouch as soon as possible. Wearing a waist trainer belt can help lose all the fluid and fat fast to achieve a shapely waist. The waist training work by cinching the waistline to make the stomach take the shape of the waist trainer.
2. Improves Your Posture
Waist training corsets use materials such as plastics or metal bones that keep your back straight for as long as you wear them. Hence wearing these will enhance the posture of your back keeping the spine straight and firm. If you tend to slouch or have back pain post-pregnancy, waist trainers can help improve your posture.
3. Eases Back Pain
Maintaining a good posture with the help of waist trainers can help you go a long way in fixing your upper and lower back pain problems. Maintaining a good posture while you sit and walk helps to take the stress of the back and reduce back pain.
4. Makes you Eat less
The waist trainer wrapped tightly around your abdomen won’t allow you to stuff yourself with food. As a consequence of less eating, you lose weight faster and get into shape sooner.
5. Soothes Menstrual Cramps
Some women find that cinchers help ease menstrual cramps. The pressure applied on the peritoneal organs can result in lesser contractions in the uterus and blocks during the period.
Side Effects of Post Pregnancy Waist Trainers
So, is it safe to wear waist trainers? The answer is yes and no, depending on the conditions.
Some manufacturers use latex rubber as the band material which can cause allergies in some women.
Waist trainers that are too tight can cause breathing difficulties and light headedness.
Tight waist trainers early during breastfeeding can make the mother eat less which is bad for both her and the baby.
Precautions to Take while Using Postnatal Weight Trainers
If you plan to wear a waist trainer after c section, you must consider the area of incision which will still be delicate. Start with simpler ones such as belly wraps and abdominal compression binders before moving to cinchers or corsets.
Waist trainers should feel tight but not cause pain.
Poor quality trainers can cause more harm than good, it’s better to buy a higher quality waist trainer.
Women who have infection at the stitches or conditions such as amnionitis or preeclampsia should avoid them completely.
FAQs
1. When Should I Start Using Post Pregnancy Waist Trainers?
The gentler trainers such as belly wraps can be used a few hours after you deliver provided your doctor gives you an all okay.
2. For How Long Should I Wear a Waist Trainer?
Start with what feels comfortable, it could be one or two hours as day initially and wear it up to 8 or 12 hours. Most manufacturers recommend wearing it all day and night except when taking bath for 30 to 60 days postpartum.
3. How Can I Choose the Right Size of Waist Trainer for Me?
Measure the waistline five centimeters above your navel. Pick a waist trainer that is four inches smaller than your measured waistline. The hooks can be adjusted as your stomach shrinks.
Waist trainers can help you shed that baby pouch and get back to your perfect figure in a short time. It’s essential that you also maintain a good diet and exercise routine to go with it for the maximum benefits.

This Mom Shows How to CREATE More Space in Your Cupboard in Only 8 Steps!
Closet full of clothes but always cribbing about how you have nothing to wear? Is there never any space in your wardrobe no matter how tidy you try to keep it? Well, the problem perhaps lies in the clutter!
Take a closer look at your closet and you will find that you perhaps have not worn that jeans in ages but it is lying in a corner. Same goes for that kurti you thought you will wear once you lose a little weight and those running shoes that are just collecting dust all over. A cluttered environment attracts negative energy, brings a sense of restlessness, and is certainly not soothing to your eyes. Whether or not you are organized as a person, decluttering your wardrobe is always a good idea. It brings a different sense of calmness and is also a step towards an organized and balanced way of living.
Marie Kondo, a mother and Japan's renowned organizing consultant, introduced the world to the now famous 'KonMari' or 'Kondo' method of organization. It has changed many lives - and we are not kidding! With her New York Times bestselling guidebook ‘The Life- changing Magic of Tidying Up’, she has transformed the lives of many. Her idea of organizing isn't only restricted to your wardrobe, but goes much beyond to your kitchen, living room and even office.
What is The KonMari Method
The KonMari or popularly known as Kondo method of decluttering thrives on the idea of one time dramatic transformative measures undertaken to be completed methodically over 6 months. Hence, it isn't an ongoing battle against clutter. It is process wherein whatever does not 'spark joy' is supposed to be touched, thanked and thereafter sent away to someone who may find joy from it.
Her method is opposed by some, however appreciated by many. Many clients claim this to be life-changing. What makes her method extremely efficient is that she doesn't tackle this process room by room but belongings by subject. Instead of focusing on what one needs to get rid of, the focus should more be on what needs to be kept.
Following are 8 quick ways that will help you learn the art of de-cluttering your cupboard and make space for the things that you actually do require. Trust us, this will actually create space in your cupboard, space you never knew existed!
1. Reduce The Number of Clothes in Your Closet
It's always a good idea to begin by evaluating what you TRULY need and what you don't. If you have kept your clothes in a hope to wear them or just because of the value they hold but you cannot make use of them any longer, it's important you let them go. Ask yourself, 'Does this piece of clothing spark a joy in my life?' If the answer is no, pack them in big back and let them go. Rule: Your closet should have enough room for two people's clothing!
2. As Far As Possible, Fold Your Clothes
After you've decided what stays and what goes, you need to start stocking them in your closet. Kondo believes that clothes stay better and 'happier' when you fold and stack them in your shelves.
3. Follow The Kondo Method of Folding
Kondo insists on following the following guideline for folding your clothes, especially your pants. This method will not only make your clothes more compact, but provide more space and will look better organized and neat.
Fold your pants in half
Fold your pants in half again
Fold your pants in thirds, starting with the waistband
Finish by folding the other third on top
4. Place and Store Belongings Vertically
The vertical stacking method is very core to KonMari method. Keeping clothes in a pile is not advisable and therefore stacking them in an order makes more sense. This method can also be adapted for drawers as it enables you to have an overall view of everything and you wouldn’t need to start hunting for that blue collar shirt in a pile!
5. Colour Coordination Always Makes Life Easier
While stacking your clothes, arrange them in a colour coded manner. This makes the process simpler and your life easier. This way you can always find all your black clothes ready when you need to attend an all-black theme party. Besides, the clothes look better organized.
6. Store The Small Belongings in An Organized Manner
Small items present in your closet (like jewellery) need not be scattered all over the place. It is advisable to always collect them and store them in small containers and boxes. Besides, they should always be kept handy for future use.
7. Smaller Garments Need Folding Too
If you thought Kondo's method of folding was only for the T-shirts and pants, well, here's some news for you. She is a huge fan of folding small items like socks and stockings too! Even the smallest things take up space in your closet and therefore folding/rolling them appropriately matters a lot.
8. Pay Attention to Your Toiletries Cupboards as Well
According to this method, it is important to remove the 'unwanted' toiletries and only keep the essentials that you may actually make use of. Once that has been decided, store these in small containers. Kondo also suggests wiping off these products after use and keep them out of sight until their next use.
Yes, many things do hold an emotional value for us; however, purging is an essential process to lead a more organized life. Marie Kondo's method is a tried and tested guide to a 'spacious' life. We are defnitely going to try it out this weekend!

Can You Donate Blood While Breastfeeding?
Donating blood is a very fulfilling community service but is blood donation safe while nursing your baby? The answer is yes. However, remember to consult a doctor and get your blood test done to rule out anaemia or any other blood disorders before you donate your blood while breastfeeding. With your donated blood, you can save someone’s life. It is a “small gift” to the community which can have a large consequence on someone who requires it.
When is the Best Time to Donate Blood for Breastfeeding Woman?
Here are a few tips to remember about donating blood when breastfeeding.
It is advisable for nursing mothers to donate blood only after 6 months from the date of delivery since delivery and breastfeeding causes a lot of fatigue in mothers.
If you have not had any immunization within the past one month, you may donate blood.
You may donate blood if you have not had any minor dental work in 24 hours and major dental work in a month’s time.
It is advisable not to donate blood even if you have taken an aspirin in 72 hours.
It is advisable to donate blood only if you have not undergone a blood transfusion during delivery.
If the last time she donated blood was more than 3 months ago, you may consider donating blood.
Lastly, a nursing mother should donate blood only when she feels comfortable about it.
Things to Consider Before Donating Blood while Breastfeeding
Donating blood is undoubtedly a very noble initiative taken by an individual. However, we should refrain from being impulsive and consider the points listed below before making a move.
1. Stay hydrated.
Breast milk comprises 87% water and when you donate blood it takes away 15-16 ounces of water from your body. Therefore it is imperative that after donating blood, the donor should take as much fluid as possible in the next 48 hours to keep the body hydrated and replace the fluid that has been drawn out. The donor should also drink a lot of water in the 24 hours prior to donating blood.
2. Keep your iron levels normal.
Breastfeeding mothers should eat iron-rich food for several weeks before donating blood to have a normal iron level while donating blood. In case the donor suffers from low levels of iron, she may suffer from weakness after donating blood. Iron-rich food includes spinach, fish, chicken, whole grains and eggs. Do not forget to take fruits rich in vitamin c like orange, tangerines, grapes, plums, cherries for better absorption of iron.
3. Reconsider blood donation if you have a low supply of milk.
It is a known fact that when an individual donates blood, she loses about 15-16 ounces of water from her body; breast milk is three-fourths water. Therefore, if a nursing mother with low milk supply loses that much of fluid from her body, she may have a further decrease in her milk supply. However, many do not agree with this.
4. Eat a good meal before and after donating blood.
Breastfeeding a baby takes up 500 calories a day and donating blood also takes up quite a bit of your energy. Therefore eating a substantial meal with plenty of proteins and iron-rich food will keep you in good stead. However, one should eat 1-2 hours before donating blood but do not eat a full stomach.
5. Rest.
Let your mommy duties take a back-seat after donating blood. Take a good nap to restore back all the energy. After your body feels rested, it will do the needful to make up for all the blood that you have donated and a relaxed body will up your supply of breast milk. A good sleep of 7-8 hours in the night prior to the donation.
Things to Remember Before Donating Blood during Breastfeeding
Usually, people are of the idea that breastfeeding and blood donation cannot happen at the same time but according to experts donating blood while nursing a baby does not pose any risks either to the mother or the baby. Here are some things that one should remember before doing it.
The haemoglobin level should be between the 12-16 %
The blood pressure of the donor should be normal
Her heart rate and pulse rate should be normal
Her body temperature should be at a normal range of 96.2 - 97 degrees Fahrenheit and Oral temperature not more than 37.5 degrees Celcius
It is necessary to drink about half a litre of water before donating blood to prevent a drop in blood pressure which may result in lightheadedness or fainting.
Vigorous exercises should be avoided before or after the donation.
Intake of fatty food should be avoided for at least 24 hours before the donation. It can give wrong test result of the blood that has been donated by you.
Remember to relax while your blood is being drawn otherwise you may start feeling sick. You may do so by listening to music, sing or talk to someone to keep you calm.
Donating blood while nursing your baby is definitely inspiring; however, do it only after consulting your doctor and getting a health check. If your health does not permit, do not fret over it but wait for the right time. After all, you do not want a noble deed like blood donation to be a bad experience for you.

When Your Toddler Refuses to Keep Clothing On
Some toddlers refuse to keep their clothes on once they figure out how to remove it. If your toddler's undressing at every given opportunity is stressing you out, learn why he's doing it and how you can stop him from it.
You may dress your toddler in the best of clothes but instead of keeping them on, he takes the first opportunity to take them off. When you wake up in the morning, he’s in his birthday suit, looking relaxed and smug. Apart from driving you up the wall, this new habit can be quite embarrassing, especially if he decides to disrobe in front of strangers or publicly. Moreover, if he takes off his diaper, it can get very messy! Why does he do this?
Reasons Why Your Toddler is Taking Clothes off
1. Uncomfortable Clothes
Your child may not enjoy the touch of frills and lace against her skin, or your son may not like the bow tie around his neck or the line of buttons on his sweaters. Maybe he’s feeling hot and sweaty and doesn’t have the verbal skills to express himself.
2. Diaper Woes
Diapers get uncomfortable when soggy and heavy. Being unable to express himself, your child just pulls it off out of frustration. It could also be that he’s ready to be potty trained, and when he needs to go, he pulls off his diaper because he doesn’t like the uncomfortable feeling. Watch out for signs that he’s ready to be potty trained such as squatting in a corner, or scrunching up his face.
3. Seeking Attention
Your 16-month-old may refuse to stay dressed almost every chance he has, because of the reaction it gets out of you. It might be his way of getting attention from you or the people around him. Whether you go red in the face and start shouting at him, or start making him wear his clothes, he’s fulfilled his goal!
4. Displaying New Skills
Your child may have just learnt how to undo zippers, and unfasten Velcro, or pull his arm out of a sleeve. For him, taking clothes off is a new and exciting activity, and he will want to do it over and over again till he gets bored or learns something new.
What to Do When Toddlers Undress Themselves
There are a few things you can do to prevent disrobing in toddlers. Try putting the clothes on backwards so that he can’t open the fasteners so easily. If it’s the diaper that seems to be bothering him, change it more frequently to avoid his irritation. Get your child comfortable clothing that doesn’t irritate his skin too. Onesies are generally tougher to take off, so you could have him wear them.
If your child just likes the freedom of being naked, give him some time to be without clothes, like 5 minutes before a bath. If your toddler’s tantrums are taken out on his clothing, try and explain to him about public and private places and how certain body parts should be covered. Most importantly, don’t over react Stay calm and apply these tips. Read more

A. Hello mam! If it is due to colic pain /gas, it is common in newborns. Make sure that you burp your baby after every feed. Don't feed just before your baby is to sleep. Make a routine like feed, play and sleep. Burp inbetween feedings. Colic pain will stop automatically at 5 or 6 months. So don't worry. Happy parenting!
