Godh Bharai (The Indian Baby Shower) Ceremony
Events that celebrate pregnancy and childbirth are part of human history. Baby showers go far back into history and were not the consumer-driven events that they are today. In ancient India, the mother was given gifts in the form of fruits and other edibles which would help the baby grow. This has changed over time, and its current form is known as the Godh Bharai.
What is Godh Bharai?
This ancient Indian tradition is like the western concept of baby showers. It is a celebration of the upcoming motherhood and acts as a support mechanism for women who are towards the end of their pregnancy. ‘Godh Bharai’ is a Hindi term and translates to “fill the lap”.
Some of the other variants celebrated in different parts of the country include:
1. Bengal
Known as Shaad, this lays heavy emphasis on delicious food and takes place during the last month of pregnancy. A unique aspect of this celebration is that gift giving for the baby is not encouraged as it is believed to bring bad luck.
2. Kerala
Known as Seemandham, rituals are interwoven with the ceremony as the mother to be must partake in a holy dip. The intelligence of the unborn baby is given paramount importance, with chanting and prayers dedicated towards this goal lasting for almost 90 minutes.
3. Tamil Nadu
Known as Valai Kappu, the mother-to-be is decked up in a black saree with red and green bangles to ward of unholy entities. Temples play a central role with at least four different temple visits being a crucial part of the ceremony.
4. Punjab
The godh bharai rasam is celebrated during the 7th month of pregnancy with close family members. The mother in law has a central role to play where she places a dupatta with fruits and coconuts on her daughter’s lap after prayers.
5. Gujarat
Known as the Godh Bharna, it has some similarities with its Punjabi variant in the sense that the mother-in-law has a meaty role to play. The mother to be is seated cross-legged on a furniture article known as the baajotth. Then, the mother in law places jewellery and other gifts on her lap.
6. Maharashtra
Known as the Dohal Jevan, the Marathi term roughly translates to “To satisfy the food craving”. As evidenced by the name, there is a substantial emphasis on the food aspect of this ceremony with nutritious foods such as rice and sweet chapati finding its way to the menu. An exciting aspect of this ceremony is the gender association with each food which can be turned into a gender guessing game.
When is it Performed?
India is a vast country, and there is no one way to perform this ancient art of the celebration of motherhood. The Nair community of Kerala for instance, do it during the last month or pregnancy. In neighbouring Tamil Nadu, it is sometimes done in the fifth month of pregnancy, although this can be pushed to the seventh or even ninth month.
Importance of Indian Baby Showers
Indian baby showers are a cultural innovation and must be viewed in its historical context. Due to the emergence of modern medical technologies and specialised care, pregnancies are relatively safe. This wasn’t the case even a century ago where there was a high mortality rate, with many women succumbing to various complications such as excessive bleeding. Godh Bharai, sometimes, was the last celebration for a woman which is why prayer is a vital part of the ceremony.
How is it Performed?
Prayers are an essential part of most Godh Bharai occasions with formal prayers and chants being recited in unison.
Like any other occasion, dressing up is crucial, and you will be clothed in traditional wear and adorned with flowers.
In many parts of the country, anointing oils have a special place, and you are often anointed by the senior women of the family.
What good is a celebration without some fun? Games are played with the baby in mind and can range from guessing the sex to a choosing a name.
As part of the Indian baby shower traditions, singing and dancing are inseparable.
Some amount of teasing is always done to the mother to be. However, all of it is done in good humour without the intention to hurt anyone.
In some parts of the country, only women guests are allowed.
Living up to the name of godh bharai rasam, the womenfolk of the family along with your girlfriends will fill your lap with sweets and fruits.
You will be made to sit in an easily accessible spot where your friends and relatives can come and bless you.
The gifting part of this baby shower is mother-centric and can include bangles, sarees and other apparels. Like the Shaad, many communities believe that gifts for the baby should only come once the baby is born.
Tips for Making Godh Bharai Ceremony More Enjoyable
1. Rest
The celebrations can get a little hectic for someone who is expecting. Make sure that you have adequate rest before and after the ceremony. Have designated spots in the venue reserved for you so that you can be seated at a moment’s notice.
2. Clothing
The weather can play spoilsport to your ceremony in an unexpected manner. During summers, avoid wearing sarees that have stiff silk or a lot of embroidery work as it can work up a sweat. During winters, don’t hesitate to get your partner’s coat along in case you’re feeling too cold.
3. Restricted Eating
Because there is so much good food around, it can be very tempting to partake in the festivities. Remember that your diet is important and indulging can lead to issues like heartburn and fluctuations in blood sugar.
4. Guest Entertainment
Keeping your guests satisfied and content is key to having a good ceremony. Apart from good food, you could hire a henna artist who can do work on the ladies at the venue.
5. Return Gifts
If you have a big budget or want to thank all the guest for showing up, you could send them a parting gift. This could be purchased from the store such as traditional women’s items like dupattas or even a hand-made thank you card.
Amazing Ideas for Indian Baby Showers
A baby shower celebration in India is a traditional affair, but there are no restrictions on making a few changes. Following are some ideas that you could use:
1. Baby Theme
A Godh Bharai ceremony can always have a theme to go along with it. One of the most popular ones is a baby theme where everything from the paper plates to the napkins has a baby on it.
2. Potluck
Catering can cost a lot of money and usually ends up in wasted food. You and your girlfriends can decide what’s on the menu and each person gets their dish.
3. Pampering the Mommy To Be
The essence of a baby shower is letting everyone know that you are the centre of attention. This means the celebrations are low key and the budget is oriented towards making you feel special. This could include coupons to a spa or a salon.
4. Diet Friendly
If Godh Bharai is about you, why is it that you aren’t allowed to touch most of the food served? Here’s where you can change things. The catering can be done where only healthy snacks and pregnant-friendly foods are allowed.
5. Do It Yourself (DIY) Baby Shower
Baby showers needn’t always be about fancy venues and stage events. A DIY baby shower is one which emphasises using your skills to create a good Baby shower environment. Handmade ribbons can be given to the guests, decorations can be made from chart paper, and even the gifts to be given must all be hand-made.
6. Environment-Friendly Theme
Are you a nature lover? Provided the weather is pleasant, the ceremony can be held outdoors. The venue can be a plastic-free zone with paper plates and cups replacing plastic. Eating with the hand will be encouraged to avoid plastic spoons, and minimal decoration will be put up.
A baby shower is held at a time when you are on the journey to motherhood and need all the support of those around you. With the anxiety, insomnia and digestive problems, the celebration of being around your family and friends is an excellent break.

Take It From a Mom, Pool-Time With a Baby Has Never Been Easier
With the increase in the temperatures and the scorching heat, it seems this time the pool is going to be blissful for the tiny tots. Parents who intend to watch their little bees splashing in the water pool need not worry about the swim wear of their newborns. The new Pampers Splashers swim pants are specially designed for pool or water time. These diapers have a special quality and unlike the normal diapers, they do not swell up on soaking water.
The name ‘splashers’ itself suggests that it is a protective covering of a panel to protect babies from the splashing water. The diapers are beautifully designed with deep thoughts keeping in mind the toddler's demands. Their tear away sides make it easier for you to change them, and they are super stretchy to provide a snug fit to the babies in water. What’s more? They have super cool graphics and you can take your baby to the beach or the pool wearing just Splashers!
The swim diaper holds in solid poop without retaining too much liquid. This gives comfort to babies while in the pool. The Pampers Splashers keep the baby dry even when wet. It provides protection in the water without any worries of a soggy diaper. These diapers are newly launched in India and they are fabulous.
I have been using it on my daughter for three weeks now and they are just amazing. They are perfect for a swim, designed specially for pool, beach, park, and Funtime. It has easy tear sides which ensures that you can remove the diaper very easily without hurting the baby or any mishap. They don’t swell in water just like the other diapers which become very heavy to even hold making the baby even more uncomfortable. I was literally love-struck at the design as it has such cute and amazing designs made on it which makes it even more attractive and fabulous. It has a 360 degree round elasticated waist which is absolutely comfortable and gentle on the babies skin without making any rash on it. It has dual leak Barriers which fits perfectly around the babies leg. It doesn’t even irritate the babies skin.
Also, only protecting toddlers with diapers in the pool is not enough. There are other precautionary measures too that need to be taken by parents. They are as follows:
Parents should ensure that there is a safe fencing around the pool. Its very important to be alert when the kids are in the pool.
The pool should be covered when not in use. We should always ensure that the kid goes in a proper pool made according to the age.
No toys should be left in the pool to avoid attracting the child unattended.
A water pool alarm should be installed. This is very important.
Parents should accompany their toddlers in the pool to avoid any accidents.
A phone or the necessary equipment should be kept in reach to avoid mishap during an emergency.
The pool water should be cleaned and changed on regular basis to avoid infections or diseases.
Kids should be kept away from hot tube drains.
Proper hygiene should be followed. A lot of authorities don’t keep the all the pools hygienic and clean. Hence choosing the correct pool area should also be considered
The baby should always be under an adult supervision.
Pampers Splashers are designed for babies to prevent water accidents in the pool. The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that all public swimming facilities require the use of swim diapers on infants and toddlers. Swim diapers prevent waste from spreading bacteria like E.coli.
These Pamper diapers are available in different sizes as per the weight of the baby. It is available in a pack of 12. The 360O stretchy waist band fits like a swimwear and easily pulls on and off when wet. It’s newly launched in India and has some amazing prints which makes it look lovely. I have used it on Diyara and highly recommend Pampers Splashers if you are looking for a swim diaper for your baby.
So, all you parents who are eager to give their baby’s a cool splash in this heat, give them with ease by making them wear these Pampers Splashers. Trust me you all are going to love them. They are till now the best swimwear diapers launched in India and trusted by so many moms.

Easy Ways to Clean and Unclog Your Kitchen Sink
Are you, on most days, faced with the problem of a clogged kitchen sink? Are you looking for ways through which you can tackle the problem on your own instead of having to call a plumber? Then this article is just for you. Read on and learn about ways through which you can quickly get rid of the problem all by yourself and much more.
How to Clean Your Kitchen Sink
Seeing your kitchen sink dirty with oil and grime sticking to its wall can make you go crazy. The very thought of having to clean up all the muck with your hands can make you feel yuck. But hold! Why does it have to be so hard? For people who struggle to keep their kitchen sink clean, here are few tips that may help.
1. Wash Utensils Immediately
Keeping dirty and unwashed utensils in the sink for too long can get bacteria to thrive on the utensils as well as the sink. Moreover, the oil and grease left behind from the utensils will form a thick coating which will be difficult to be washed off later.
2. Deep Cleaning
Every kitchen sink needs a thorough cleaning once in a fortnight. For this, you may use a mixture of baking soda, borax, salt and lemon juice. Simply scatter the powder on the sink and leave it for few minutes. Then give it a good scrub off all the dirt and oil using a steel scrub. Lastly, rinse the sink well using hot water.
3. Clean the Sink after Using
Spending a little time on cleaning the sink every time you use it can save you from the arduous task of having to deep clean your kitchen sink. Just a gentle rub with soap and scrub after doing your dishes and your kitchen sink is again good to go.
4. Lemon and Salt Scrub
This is a simple and easy scrub made of lemon juice and salt. Lemons are readily available in every household and salt too. Just sprinkle some salt in the sink and scrub half of a lemon in the sink squeezing the juice while scrubbing. Both the ingredients help to take off the oil and grime from the sink, and the use of lemon gives a fresh smell.
5. Scrubbing with Dishwashing Soap
This is perhaps one of the best everyday sink cleaning method for a metal sink. Just take your utensil cleaning bar and a metal scrub and give it a thorough scrub. Then rinse it with water. You will get a shiny clean metal sink in a matter of a few minutes. However, this method of cleaning is for sinks which are cleaned every day, and as a result, there is very little dirt or grime to be washed.
6. Spray Cleaner
This is for the days when your kitchen sink does not need much of cleaning; just a gentle wipe. For this, mix vinegar and water in equal proportions with some lemon juice. Give it a good shake and spray it on the sink and the counters. Then wipe the area with a soft towel. However, the spray has a short shelf life; therefore, make it in small portions.
7. Flour as a Cleaner
This cleaning method is exclusively meant for sinks which are made of stainless steel. Wipe off moisture from the sink with a kitchen towel. The sink should be made absolutely dry before you sprinkle flour otherwise it will turn into a paste. Once you have sprinkled flour, start rubbing the sink surface in circular motions with a cotton towel. Keep on rubbing until your sink turns sparkling clean.
How to Unclog Your Kitchen Sink Drains?
It is not just the kitchen sink that requires a thorough cleaning up but also the drain. If the sink drain is clogged and there is an obstruction, after a point of time there will be standing water in the sink. To unclog the sink drain, you either call a plumber or try out the below listed do-it-yourself methods.
1. Unclogging with Hot Water
This method is inexpensive and the easiest to unclog sink drains. Keep some water to boil and remove as much of the standing water as possible. Once the water comes to a boil, pour it down the sink drain. You may have to repeat this many times until the drain gets unclogged.
2. Unclogging with Salt and Hot Water
Salt and hot water together work great to unclog drain pipes. Take about ½ a cup of table salt and pour it into the drain pipe. Let it sit there for a few minutes. Then pour boiling water into the sink drain pipe.
3. Unclogging Manually
Although this method may seem to be downright yucky for some, it is effective. Pull out the sink drain pipe and push the clogged stuff out with a stick. Then put the sink pipe back again.
4. Unclogging with Apple Cider Vinegar and Baking Soda
After the standing water is removed from the sink, take 1-2 cups of baking soda and pour it through the sink drain. Then pour the same amount of apple cider vinegar. Once you do so, it will bubble and fizz. Once it subsides, put the sink stopper and let it be so for the next 15-20 minutes. Then pour hot water. However, if it does not unclog, you may repeat the method.
5. Unclogging with Table Salt and Baking Soda
These two ingredients work well to unclog sink drain pipes. Mix baking soda and half the amount of table salt. Pour the mix into the sink drain pipe and let it sit for few hours. Then pour boiling water down the drain to flush out the blockage. You may have to repeat the procedure if required.
6. Unclog with a Plunger
If your other methods fail, you may try out a plunger. However, before that seal the other outlets with a wet cloth or a stopper. Put the plunger on top of the drain opening and see to it that it covers the drain pipe opening completely. Then plunge it several times forcefully. Once the clog is flushed out, pour in hot water.
7. Unclog with a Metal Hanger
For this, you need to take an old, not-in-use metal hanger. Open it up and unbend it to make a long metal wire like a plumber’s snake. Use it to pull out the clog or push it out. Then pour hot water.
8. Unclog with a Vacuum Cleaner
The vacuum somewhat works like a plunger. However, this method can be accomplished only with the help of a wet and dry vacuum cleaner, and you will also require assistance. First, you have to cover the area near the sink with rugs since the water may splash. Then, like you would place a plunger, place the vacuum hose firmly (put a plunger cup on the opening of the hose). Then switch on the vacuum cleaner. In the case of a clog, the sound will be different than when the drain pipe is empty. Keep on vacuuming until the sound changes. If the sound does not change for quite some time, stop the appliance for some time and restart again. However, be careful not to damage the pipes. Once the pipe unclogs, pour a good amount of hot water into the drain.
FAQs
Listed below are answers to few frequently asked questions.
1. How Do I Clean A Ceramic Sink?
Listed below are few of the ways by which you may clean a ceramic sink.
Fill the sink with water and drain all the water out. Then sprinkle baking soda all over the sink. Leave it for some time. After about 15-20 minutes, scrub the sink with a wet sponge (wring out the excess water properly). Know that your cleaning is going in the right direction if the baking soda forms small lumps.
Cut 2-3 lemons in two halves each. Take one half of a lemon and start rubbing the basin squeezing the juice. In case of dark spots or stains, rub them with the outer skin of the lemon. Allow the lemon juice to sit for some time and then rinse the sink with hot water.
Mix equal amount of bleach and water in a spray bottle. Shake it well and then spray it inside the sink. Leave it for 10-15 minutes and then wipe the sink with a coarse rug.
2. How Do I Remove Acid Stains From The Kitchen Sink?
Firstly, try washing the acid stain by spraying water on it. However, if the acid is there since long, water won’t be able to wash away the stain.
If the above solution does not work, apply this method. Mix equal amount of baking soda and water to make a paste. Apply it over the stain.
If water and baking soda do not work, add ammonia to baking soda and apply it over the stains.
Once the stain is gone, with a wet towel, wipe the surface.
3. Can I Pour Bleach Down the Kitchen Sink?
Though bleach is good at cleaning and works well as a disinfectant, it does not clear up the clog. Most importantly mixing it with ammonia or other acids which can be found in household products which can end up in the drains, could be harmful. Therefore, it is advisable not to pour bleach down the sink drain.
4. How Do I Unclog A Sink with Standing Water?
To clean kitchen sink drain pipe with standing water can be quite a herculean task. There are various ways by which you can unclog steel sink in the kitchen. To unclog a double kitchen sink without a garbage disposal, you may use a plunger after you have sealed the other outlet with wet rags or a stopper. However, the best way to avoid clogs in the drain pipe is to avoid throwing food particles, peels etc. in the sink and to clear the drain pipes and clean the kitchen sink with baking soda, once a week.
These simple steps can save you hours of exhausting cleaning work and give you a hassle-free kitchen.

We Were Infertile But We Didn't Give Up
I got married in 2013. Was living a happy married life. After 2 years of marraige, my husband and I decided to have a baby. But life is not that simple. 90% of the time what we decide doesn't happen. After 1 year of failed Preganews report, we finally went to the doctor. After lots of lots of checkups and tests, doctor said I have thyroid, PCOD, a cyst of medium size, one blocked fallopian tube, and my ovary was not producing eggs for fertility. In simple words I was infertile. I had 50% chance to conceive. Believe me, that was the most heartbreaking news I have ever heard. It was so hard to accept the fact. But we both decided not to give up hope just yet and started my tons of medicines, injections right away.
After 6 months we went to the doctor again. This time he said my husband is infertile too. And that 50% chance came down to 25%. We still didn't give up hope. Another 6 months gone and finally, it started affecting us, affecting our relationship. We went to every single famous doctor in our city, took all the advice we could take, took an enormous number of medicines. My in-laws started telling me that this is all my fault. I was already devastated with all the things and this started getting on my nerves. It started feeling like mental torture at one point in time.
2017 mid, we were broken, we lost all our hopes, we gave up. We decided to go for IVF, and if that didn't work out, we thought of adopting a baby and raise him/her well. So what if we didn't have our own. We had each other.
2018 January, my period was late, I told my husband to get a Preganews kit and he did. Next day early in the moring I went to the bathroom to test it. Deep down I knew it isn't going to be positive this time also but I was hoping for it somewhere. And it came positive. Wooohoooo!!!!!!! The happiest day of my life!! Could not believe on my eyes. Told him the news, showed the kit but he didn't believe also. Rest the story for another time. In short, 2018 August, my little bundle of joy came to this earth, my Jishu. To all the infertile parents out there - do not give up, do not give up hope, do not give up on each other. Fight it, stay strong with each other holding hands. Let neighbours and relatives speak. Infertility makes you strong physically, mentally, emotionally. Good things come to those who wait.

Every child is special, or it should be, every child is different.
I was so excited to take my daughter home from hospital. Frankly saying i was nervous. What if, i slip my hand, what if i am not able to handle her properly etc etc.
I have a super duper mom who constantly stood by my side, her contribution was almost 90%. Few things were there which i decided to do without any help and i did that, like giving her a bath, massage, changing her diaper etc.
Now the main point, why did i say every child is special? Actually i should say every child is different and special and we should treat in the same way. First of all my little saying to all the mommies that you should never ever compare your baby. They are an individual.
Let me except one thing or confess, yes like any other mommies, i too went through various websites, articles to grasp knowledge about the growth pattern of the baby in every month. I always use to watch her grow ,in the way those described. When my baby completed her 5the month, my first question which arouse into my mind, what should i give her? Will i stop her milk? How many times in a day i should give her solid? I was confused, hyper and so on. To my rescue, i met my baby's doctor. She gave me all the chart and everything.
I visited those websites again to cross check. I gave her this, i gave her that, few were success and few were fails. I was tensed again. Many questions rose, why is she not eating this or why is she not crawling? Oh my god. Really being a mother is tough. These were some things which really disturbed me. I know most of my mommies go through this phase.
One day, i was sitting beside my daughter and suddenly she gave me a look and instantly i understood that she is hungry and want me to feed her. I realized, this isn't something which any of the article or website told us, this is something which my daughter taught me.
That was the day when i realized, i should not make fuss of everything. Handle your child, the way they want to. Feed your child calmly and slowly. Just because it is written somewhere that your child have reached to this level, doesn't mean that your child should have done the same. I am enjoying every moment with my child and yes i do go through those websites or articles but only for upper guidance. Now i am not tensed or worried and i enjoy being a mom to my beautiful daughter who taught me a lesson at such a age. Read more

A. since the follicle size is 18 to 20 mm your ovulation may occur within 24 hours also so if you have intercourse with in that time it will be more effective to get conceived
your endometrial growth is not good enough for conception but still you can just try

A. Hello dear! If your pregnancy is going on fine without any high risk factors then it’s okay. Still, would advise you to check with your doctor once before going further. Maintain a good personal hygiene routine and a healthy lifestyle
