Frequency of Baby Poop – How Often Should Your Baby Poop?
Right from the time you welcome your child into this world, your mind will be filled with questions. A common question that bothers almost all new parents is regarding the pooping habits of a baby. Parents often have this common question in their mind - ‘How should the poop of a healthy baby be?’
The poop of a baby is an indication of his health, as a lot of diseases and disorders the child is facing can be identified by simply examining the colour of his poop. As a mother, you will go through a lot of diaper-changing episodes in the near future, so make sure to notice the frequency and colour of his poop to check if there is anything wrong with your baby.
Let us take a look at newborn stool frequency, and what it means in the early stages of his life so that you can take better care of your newborn.
How Often Does a Newborn Baby Poop?
The table below gives an indication of the minimum number of bowel movements expected of a child per 24-hour period in the first six months of his life.

Pooping in babies is an indication that there are no problems with the digestive system of the child. You should be happy to see your baby poop in the first 24 hours of his life, since the absence of poop points to the existence of a problem in his digestive system.
During the first 24 hours, the poop of your baby is in the meconium stage. The poop will be black and sticky, and usually hard to wipe off. Your baby is expected to pass stools within 24 hours of birth. The poop mainly consists of the matter he ingested when he was inside the uterus, and is mostly made up of fluids and cells. Oddly enough, the poop will be odourless. This is because the friendly bacteria have not yet colonized his gut. The bowel movement occurs because of the colostrum he’ll feed on, which performs the function of a laxative to help push out the matter from the body of the child.
After that, the poop eventually becomes more watery and loose. This continues for around twelve more weeks because the digestive system of the child is still in development. It will not be absorbing the nutrients from the breast milk quite effectively, so much of it will simply go out of his body through his poop. The undigested sugar and milk in the body tend to act as a laxative, leading to frequent bowel movements. However, the stools become less watery and more predictable as the baby grows.
When your baby starts eating solid foods, you can expect poop that is much more adult-like. This usually occurs around the five-month mark, when you start feeding solid food to your child. The poop becomes firm and dark in colour and has a distinctly bad odour. Note that the colour of the poop is slightly dependent on the meal he would have had previously; this is completely normal and is indicative of a good digestive system. Sometimes, you may even find bits of veggies in his poop. This is because hard foods are usually passed on by the digestive system as they are not properly chewed, owing to the lack of molars.
In any way, a mother will be expected to make at least a thousand diaper changes in the first year of parenthood. So, observe the colour and texture of the poop for an idea about the health of your child.
How Many Times a Day Should Breastfed Babies Poop?
During the early stages of breastfeeding, your child may not have a strong digestive system to absorb all the nutrients he receives. This means that a lot of the milk is simply passed out of the body through stools, which leads to the stools being yellow in colour and having a loose consistency in the first few months. You can expect your child to poop at least four times a day in the first few weeks of his life. The frequency of pooping eventually increases as he grows. Most commonly, breastfed babies poop after every feeding, sometimes even twelve times a day or more.
How Many Times Does a Formula-Fed Baby Poop?
Compared to children who are breastfed, formula-fed babies poop far less. This is because of the lack of colostrum in their diet, which acts as a natural laxative and is present in high amounts in breastmilk. The frequency of the child pooping will be around three or four times a day, and the texture will be more solid compared to that of breastfed babies. The colour is less yellow and more greenish and darker.
As he grows, you will find that your baby poops only once a day, whether formula-fed or breastfed. This is an indication of the digestive system becoming healthier and does not mean that there is anything wrong with the baby.
When to Consult a Paediatrician
When your little one poops, it could sometimes cause you alarm just to see the different expressions on his face and the sounds he’ll make - groans and frowns throughout. However, this needn’t be considered a problem. Your baby’s digestive system is just developing and it’s normal for him to go through some strain to pass stools. Such things don’t call for medical attention, but trust your motherly instincts to decide when you have to pay the doctor a visit. The signs below will give you an indication that something is amiss with your baby’s digestive health:
If the stool of the baby is showing traces of blood or if it seems oddly coloured
If your baby seems constipated
If his poop is filled with mucus or water, meaning that your child might be having some sort of allergy or infection
If your newborn’s stools are still black in colour, i.e., after day four of his birth
If he passes more stools than what is usual for him
If his stools are white or grey in colour
The poop of your baby can give you an insight into his health, so it’s important that you always take note of the frequency and consistency of his bowel movements in the early stages. Since your baby won’t be able to communicate any problems or discomfort at such a young age, you should definitely pay attention to his poop so that any diseases or problems can be recognised immediately.

Travelling With a Baby on a Flight - Checklist Before You Go
Is the thought of travelling by air with your baby giving you nightmares? There is no doubt that travelling may make your baby behave differently but there is no need to hit the panic button. If you plan well, travelling may turn into a fun experience for both you and your baby. If you are thinking about the probability of this happening, we recommend that you browse through the following article to know how you may plan your air travel with your baby.
10 Things To Consider While Flying With A Baby
What all you should do or not do while travelling with a baby on a plane? Well, here we have compiled a checklist or tips for flying with an infant that may make your air travel not only hassle-free, but it may become more convenient for both you and your baby.
1. The Age Of Your Baby
It is essential to consider this fact before you plan any air travel with your baby. Newborn babies may settle quickly as they spend most of their time sleeping. However, slightly older babies (2-4 months old babies) may not have a set feeding and sleeping schedule, which may create trouble for you. Therefore, if you are planning to travel by air make sure your baby is of an age, where he is easily manageable by you.
2. Extra Baby Supplies For The Plane
Make sure you pack enough diapers, wipes, burp clothes, changing clothes and other such baby supplies with you. Also, keep a small blanket or a sweatshirt for your baby to keep him warm during the flight. Pack smartly so that you do not fall short of anything as babies are unpredictable and you can expect anything from them.
3. Try Getting A Window Seat
It will be a good idea to book a window seat in advance. It will not only give you a little privacy while feeding, but you can also use the window to lean on for extra support and resting. Also, you will be in control of the amount of light you want as it will be a lot easier for you to close and open the window shutter. And some babies enjoy looking out of the window.
4. Feed Your Baby During Takeoff And Landing
Just the way adults feel the ear pain due to change in pressure, during takeoffs and landings, babies experience the same. This may make them cry incessantly. However, to avoid this embarrassing baby-howling session, you should feed your baby because the actions of sucking and swallowing help keep ear pains at bay.
5. Plan Your Travel Around Your Baby’s Nap Time
The best part about air travels in that you spend less time in travelling, and if your baby is at an age where he has set sleeping patterns, you might just have a solution for your travel woes. Plan your travel at a time that is close to your baby’s nap time. This way your baby may spend most of his travelling time sleeping, which means minimum hassle for you.
6. If Possible Bring A Travel Companion
There is no denying that babies are demanding and need constant care when travelling. All this caring can make you feel exhausted. Therefore, it is a good idea to have a companion on board when you are travelling with an infant. Just imagine how hard it will be to take a bathroom break if you are travelling all by yourself? Tricky, isn't it? Therefore you should try to get a travel companion with you to feel more relaxed and comfortable while travelling.
7. Pack Extra Clothes For Yourself
You may find the idea quite funny but believe it or not, you may need it. Travelling may make your baby poop, pee or even throw up more than usual and sometimes your clothes may get soiled too. If you wish to travel all stinky and dirty then probably you may skip packing an extra pair of clothes for yourself. However, we recommend otherwise.
8. Your Baby’s Travel Gear
Travelling light is not something you can execute with a baby because when it comes to babies, comfort takes priority. However, you may plan to check-in your baby’s stroller, pram, car seat or other such bulky items beforehand and most airlines may not even charge for it too. Also, if you are taking any travelling gear on-board with you, you may request the airlines to help you, board, first.
9. Pack Your Baby’s Favourite Toys
If your baby is at an age where he loves to play with toys, then it will be a good idea to pack toys for your baby when you are planning air travel. This way your baby will not only feel entertained and amused on the flight, but he will not trouble you much. However, do not pack toys that make loud noises or sounds as they may disturb the fellow passengers. Also, carry few toys as babies are usually clumsy while holding toys and may drop it on the floor and you would not like your baby to play with a toy that is get infected with germs.
10. Be Prepared To Nurse Often
There is nothing more soothing and comforting for a baby than a breastfeeding experience. By this, your baby is not only filling his tummy, but the close contact with the mother helps your baby feel protected, more so during travelling. Therefore, wear a comfortable top and bra which will make it easy to manage to feed. If your baby takes formula milk, you should pack enough sterilised bottles, formula and warm water to prepare milk for your baby. Sometimes airlines provide warm water too, but we suggest carrying water on your own for health and hygiene reasons. It will also be a good idea to carry a pacifier for your baby because it may not be hungry, but just the sucking instinct that your baby may be looking forward to satiating and under such situations, pacifiers work best.
Those mentioned above are some tips that will help you travel on a flight with a baby. However, if it is not that urgent or necessary, we recommend that you postpone your air travel plans until your baby is six months of age. This is because by that time your baby’s sleeping, feeding and toilet schedule will be more organised and it will become a lot easier for you to manage your baby on board. However, if you wish to travel before that, we recommend that you consult your doctor for the same. Your doctor will check your baby’s health and will also tell you how you can effectively manage your baby on the flight.

Nicholas Name Meaning and Origin
Nicholas's name is derived from 'Nikalaos,' a combination of the Greek words, 'nike' meaning victory, and 'laos' meaning people. Saint Nicholas of Anatolia was a 4th-century bishop who later became a patron saint of Russia, Greece, children, and sailors. In the Bible, Nicholas means 'people of victory' and was given to one of the Seven Deacons. Although it was used as a unisex name, parents nowadays opt for more feminine versions of the name, such as Nicole for girls and Nicholas for boys. Once common among the early Anglo-Norman settlers in Ireland, this name still retains its popularity.

15 Things You Should Do When You Have a Baby
With the arrival of my daughter Liz, my life took a sharp turn in a direction I never knew existed. I wouldn’t say it was a U-turn because life had never been the same before. I had been a free, adventurous person but now every little thing seems scary - be it reading a magazine (she loves to tear away the pages and eat them) or cooking in the kitchen (she crawls from the playmat or comes walking and pulls the drawers) or taking out the laundry (she enjoys picking up clothes, biting and scattering them) or drinking water from a bottle (she wants to open the bottle and pour water all around).
My adventures have changed dramatically from going out in the open and doing some crazy stuff to staying indoors and getting alarmed at every mewl and whimper. My life now revolves around the baby and most of my time goes in keeping everything out of reach. So, here’s a list I came up with from my own experiences -
1. Frequently Wash the Toys
Toys have a lot of germs as they get exposed to the environment when played with, and accumulate dust when they sit in the toy box. So, it’s advisable to wash the toys regularly with warm soapy water. Especially after your baby has a cold/fever, make sure you wash the toys that your baby played with.
2. Carry Your Own Toys While Going Out
Once we visited a friend who had a baby too. Liz played with their toys and put them in her mouth. Oh! Babies taste and feel! The very next morning, Liz woke up with a high temperature which refused to come down for three long days and I don’t even want to talk about how I survived. Well, for those of you who are wondering, I did carry my own toys but babies get excited when they see new toys. So, it takes some effort to engage babies with their own toys and I promised myself to make an effort the next time.
3. Clean the Sanitiser Bottle on the Outside
I have one sanitiser at home and one in the car. I use it generously all the time. Recently, I noticed dust accumulating on both the bottles and that’s when I realized it needed some cleaning. So, if you’re a sanitiser freak, you don’t want to miss out on this point.
4. Wipe Your TV/AC Remotes Regularly
Babies are interested in everything other than what is offered to them. And, remotes fall in the category of their interest. If placed in the living room which is accessible to guests too, you might want to keep a check on this one.
5. Clean the Doorknobs
Doorknobs are touched by everyone, and you just can’t be sure of how many clean/dirty hands have touched it. So, while cleaning the house, make sure you wipe them too.
6. Wash Secondhand Baby Products Thoroughly Before Use
It might sound gross, but babies not only put everything in their mouths but also spit up, pee and poop anywhere they want to. To keep your baby safe from foreign germs, it’s a good habit to wash secondhand products with a good baby detergent before your baby gets hold of them.
7. Read the Instruction Manual Before Setting Up Baby Gear
We got a ‘Pack and Play On the Go’ from one of our friends who were relocating to another country. Only after opening and setting it up did I realize that it was only for babies under 7 kgs and my baby had already outgrown it. I had to pack it all again, and it wasn’t an easy job.
8. Keep a Check on Electrical Wires
I once left a toaster on the kitchen slab and went into the bedroom to get something, without noticing the wire dangling down. Liz was fascinated and quickly sprinted in her walker and pulled it. I first heard a thud and then a cry. I quickly rushed to check and found the toaster on her hand. Luckily, it was a lightweight toaster and she didn’t get hurt. And, I learnt my lesson (the hard way, though!).
9. Plug-In Electrical Sockets with Socket Covers
Babies and toddlers are attracted to anything which has holes. They want to put their fingers in to get a feel of it. Danger has no limits. Socket covers are available in all hardware stores and serve this purpose well.
10. Carry the Changing Mat wherever you Go and Wash it Regularly
A changing mat is used multiple times a day and not just at home. It’s good to carry your changing mat wherever you go because changing tables available in malls may not be cleaned every day.
11. Wash the Playmat Often
Like toys, the playmat is also used often and the baby spends a good amount of time on it. So, keeping the play area fresh and clean keeps your baby healthy and active.
12. Keep Sharp Objects Out of Reach
Childproofing is a myth! You cannot keep all the cupboards locked all the time (especially, the kitchen). So, keep sharp objects like forks and knives out of reach to avoid accidents.
13. Buy Machine-Washable Products
When shopping for baby products (baby gym/ playmat/ pram/ stroller/ bouncer, etc), buy machine-washable products as far as possible. It saves a lot of time and energy.
14. Keep the Restaurant Menu Out of your Child's Reach
Just like money, a menu is one of the items which goes from hand to hand but is never cleaned.
15. Don't Leave your Flip-flops on the Floor while the Baby is on the Floor/Playmat
While all your shoes and sandals make their way into the shoe cabinet, your flip-flops might be lying around waiting to catch your baby's attention. Like I already mentioned, babies are interested in anything which is not given to them.
No matter what you hear, listen to what your heart says (they are called mother’s instincts) and follow them. It’ll not only please you but also keep you strong and going.

How to Overcome Obstacles to Physical Activity in Toddlers
With the advent of smart phones, video games and computers, dealing with a kid's screen time can become a challenge for parents. This article will help you in promoting physical activity in a toddler's life.
Getting children to spend time on physical activities can be a big challenge for parents. With obstacles like screen time, hectic work schedules and over-dependence on prams and strollers, getting children to run and play can get difficult for parents. While these barriers can be challenging, it is not impossible to overcome them. The key is to identify what is getting in the way of your child's physical activity, and then finding a way out.
Tips to Overcome Obstacles
1. Screen time
One of the biggest obstacles to physical activity is screen time. It refers to the time children spend watching television, playing games (video or computer games), and the time spent on tablets and smartphones. Screen time can be good entertainment, and a valuable source of learning in children, but too much of it could turn them into couch potatoes. It could also impair the development of communication and social skills in your children, all of which are necessary for kids to grow and evolve into people with good personalities.
Today, most parents think that it is natural for children to spend time with gadgets and gizmos. While children today are more tech-savvy, and likely to embrace technology as part and parcel of their lives, limiting screen time is equally important. To limit screen time, parents can chalk out and strictly implement certain hours as screen time, outside of which children should not be permitted to watch television or play with phones and tablets. It might also be a good idea not to have any screen time on certain days.
It is also equally important for parents to take children out to parks and recreation centers. Exposing children to nature and encouraging them to take up sports will teach them important life skills. Playing with other children gives them an opportunity to imbibe team spirit and interact with peers.
2. Limited Space for Physical Activity
Sometimes parents may feel restricted by limited space for a child's physical activity. In such cases, they can look out for parks and recreation centers nearby. If there are none around your residential area, it might prove to be a deterrent. All parents must make an effort to take their children out to the beach, park or recreation center for a few hours, every week.
3. Hectic Work Schedules
Your work schedule may not permit you to spend time on physical activity with your children. You can easily overcome this obstacle by taking turns to play with your children or take them out. Ask a friend or neighbor to share the responsibility with you.
4. Prams and Strollers as Obstacles
Prams and strollers are convenient ways to move smaller children around. But keeping children seated or sleeping with them around on a sunny day for long hours, will only serve to instill and encourage lethargy early on. In such a case, you should encourage your child to walk and go to the park whenever possible.
Physical activity is a must for the all-around growth and development of your child. Modern-day living can present many obstacles to it. Instead of feeling puzzled about how to overcome obstacles to physical activity in children, parents must stay committed to the cause, and find new ways to overcome the obstacles. Read more
