Diaper Rash – Identification, Causes and Remedies
A baby’s skin is sensitive. If you notice that your baby’s skin is reddish and has small rashes in the area covered by the diaper, then your baby might have diaper rash. Diaper rash is very common in babies, and most parents need to tend to it in the first year of their child’s life. The skin affected by diaper rash may look puffy with a few prickly spots or even have large red bumps (usually spread on the thighs and tummy).
Video: Diaper Rash in Babies – Symptoms, Causes and Remedies
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQpOEGMWmag
What is Diaper Rash?
Diaper rashes may appear once your baby starts wearing diapers. It affects the skin under the diaper. Baby diaper rash or diaper dermatitis is a common skin condition, which makes your baby’s skin red, sore and tender.
This generally affects infants and toddlers below the age of 2. If your baby’s bottom looks irritated and you can see rashes on it, then chances are that your baby has yeast diaper rash. This kind of diaper rash occurs due to a yeast infection. Skin affected by a yeast diaper rash will also feel warm when you touch it.
Types of Diaper Rash
Diaper rashes can be of different types. The common ones are:
1. Contact diaper rashes
These are the result of keeping your baby in a wet diaper for a long time. Such rashes are often not too serious.
2. Yeast rashes
These usually appear on the folds of your baby’s skin.
3. Allergy
An allergy can also lead to rashes in the diaper area.
4. Rashes because of acidity
Rashes can also appear if your baby’s stool is too acidic.
Signs of Diaper Rash
A diaper rash might be caused by a variety of reasons, such as the baby’s urine or the introduction of a new food. Although it is a transitory issue, the irritated skin might cause discomfort to the baby for a few days. Recognising diaper rash and taking preventive and remedial measures will go a long way in ensuring your baby’s comfort. Here are a few signs to look out for in babies who wear diapers.
The symptoms of yeast diaper rash include:
Rashes on the baby’s bottom: If you see pink or red patches on your baby’s bottom, it can be a sign of diaper rash.
Bumps on the baby’s bottom and thighs: Bumps which appear on the baby’s bottom and thighs may be a diaper rash. These bumps may be red and filled with a fluid.
Scaling: Peeling or scaling of the skin in the diaper area may be a sign of diaper rash.
Bleeding: The skin on baby’s bottom may bleed if she has severe diaper rash.
Dryness: Dry skin on the baby’s bottom may be a sign of diaper rash.
A rise in temperature: If the skin covered by the diaper is warmer than the rest of the body, this may be a sign of diaper rash.
A fussy baby: If your baby cries while you are cleaning the diaper area, it may be because of diaper rash
If diaper rash is not treated on time, it can lead to fever and the rashes may spread to other parts of your baby’s skin as well.
How do Babies Get Diaper Rash?
There are many causes of diaper rash. Starting from your baby’s own urine to infection, some of the common culprits are:
1. Wetness
Even the best diapers leave behind some moisture on the skin. When this moisture mixes with the bacteria present in your baby’s stool, the stool breaks down and forms ammonia. Ammonia is a prime cause of these rashes. This is why babies who suffer from diarrhoea are more prone to diaper rashes. Babies who are left in soiled or wet diapers for too long are also likelier to get rashes.
2. Tight diapers
They can cause sweating and increase heat generation in your baby’s body. This, in turn, accentuates the pH level of your baby’s skin and makes it more susceptible to rashes. Friction with the diaper can make the situation worse.
3. Chemical Sensitivity and Chafing
The rubbing of the baby’s soft skin against the diaper may cause rashes. Also, if your baby skin is sensitive to chemicals such as the fragrances used in the case of some disposable diapers, there is further increase in the chance of developing rashes. Remains of laundry detergent in a cloth diaper can also be one of the causes of diaper rash. The chemicals in some baby wipes, baby powder and other products may be a potential reason for the rashes too.
4. New Foods
Diaper rash can also appear if you have introduced new foods into your baby’s diet or she has started solid food. The change of diet will also change the composition of your baby’s stool. The acid in certain fruits and fruit juices can cause rashes. The frequency of bowel movement can increase due to the changes in your baby’s food habits, leading to rashes. If you are still nursing your baby, there are also chances that the rashes can be a reaction to something you ate.
5. Yeast or Bacterial Infection
The skin under the diaper is warm and moist which acts as the perfect environment for bacteria and yeast to thrive. Bacteria and yeast can flourish easily there and more so inside the folds and of the baby’s skin.
6. Antibiotics
Is your baby on antibiotics? Or are you taking antibiotics and breastfeeding your child? At times, antibiotics kill the healthy bacteria that could fight the harmful ones, leading to a yeast infection.
Test and Exams
The diagnosis of diaper rash is based on physical examination of your baby’s rashes and the medical history. A lab test is not a necessity in most cases. However, if the doctor thinks that the rashes are your baby’s allergic reaction to an allergen, he may perform a skin test to know what the allergen is.
Treatment & Drugs for Diaper Rash in Babies
The procedure used for treatment depends on how serious the rashes are. If the rashes are mild, you will be able to treat the rashes yourself, by keeping the area clean and dry. Do make sure you pat the skin dry instead of rubbing as chafing may add to the problem.
In severe cases, the doctor may recommend the use of a nappy rash cream. Several ointments for diaper rash are available in the local pharmacy and are effective in curing the infection. Make sure to use one prescribed by a doctor. If the rashes are allergic reactions, the doctor may recommend anti-allergy drugs after conducting the skin test.
How To Prevent Diaper Rash?
Some ways to prevent diaper rash are:
Maintain dryness: It is important to keep your baby’s diaper area dry to prevent rashes.
Maintain hygiene: Make sure that your baby’s skin does not stay in contact with stool and urine for a long time. Change diapers as and when required and frequently check if it is soiled or wet. You might have to wake up at night to change diapers to prevent rashes. It is quite usual to change diapers 8 times in a day.
Clean right: Use warm water to clean your baby’s diaper area, and after cleaning, use a soft cloth to wipe the area. Use gentle baby soap only if the diaper was soiled. Avoid using baby wipes if your baby has a rash. Some wipes contain propylene glycol which is an alcohol and will burn your baby’s skin and cause the infection to spread.
Leave off diapers as much as possible: Give your baby enough ‘naked time’ so that his private areas can breathe free.
Choose the right diapers: Try and use diapers that offer maximum absorbency.
Introduce solids gradually: Introduce solid food one at a time, and wait for a few days in between before introducing the next one.
Wash the diapers well: If you are using cloth diapers, make sure you clean them properly. Use a mild and baby-friendly detergent to get rid of alkaline irritants.
When Should One Be Concerned About Diaper Rash?
The above treatment methods and drugs are usually sufficient to get rid of these rashes. The rashes should be gone within 3-4 days. However, make sure you visit the doctor if the rashes appear infected. Some things that you need to be cautious about are:
If the rashes start affecting the other parts of your baby’s body
If there is pus formation in the rashes
If your baby has fever
If the rashes become redder and worse
If there are open sores of yellow patches
If your baby is less than 6 weeks old
If the rashes are accompanied with diarrhoea which continues for more than 2 days
You do not need a doctor to treat mild diaper rash. Make sure you keep your baby’s bottom dry and clean.
Home Remedies for Diaper Rash
Some effective natural remedies for diaper rash can help relieve the symptoms associated with it. These involve the use of natural ingredients that are readily available.
1. Coconut Oil
This is one of the best natural treatments available for diaper rash. Massage the diaper area with coconut oil gently to get rid of the rashes.
2. Shea Butter
If your baby has sensitive skin, you can apply shea butter. This will keep her skin soft and also fight a yeast infection.
3. A Warm Bath
This helps soothe the itching and burning. Soak the area in a tub containing warm water containing 1 tbsp of baking soda. Do this thrice a day. This is recommended for babies whose umbilical cords have fallen off and who are above the age of 1-2 weeks.
Conclusion: Diaper rash is common among babies and is one of the most frequent challenges of parenting. Maintain hygiene, change diapers frequently, and provide enough air exposure to prevent these rashes. Read more

Easy Tips to Teach a Child to Ride a Bicycle
As your child begins to grow up, you would start teaching him a lot of things, right from tying his shoelaces to helping out around the house. One of the usual milestones that usually confounds parents is understanding how to teach a child to ride a bike. Is it better to run behind your child as he balances or should you use training wheels and let him get the hang of it? There are many techniques you can employ to make sure he starts riding it well.
What Is The Right Age for Teaching Bicycle to a Child?
As with every child out there, the right age differs for everyone. However, there is an emotional side associated with learning to ride the bicycle, which makes it best to teach it to your child when he’s around 4-6 years old. This is the age when children are more open to trying out new things and don’t fear failure or hurting as much. After a few years, those aspects start making themselves felt, which could make your child a little fearful and too cautious about learning to ride a bike.
Preparations Before You Start Giving Bike Lessons to Your Child
Here's what you need to keep in mind before teaching your kid how to ride a bike.
1. Ensure Your Child Is Emotionally Ready
Not all kids will be ready at the same time to learn a new skill. Your child’s friends might be completely excited to start cycling and taking the first steps already, but your child still might be hesitant to do so.
Let your child take his time. Don’t force him or scold him to ride the bike. This will make him hate the activity itself. At times, your child might also need the physical strength to be able to balance the bicycle, too.
2. Selecting and Preparing The Bicycle
Parents often opt for getting a bicycle that could last for future years, too. However, learning a new skill on a cycle that’s too large for your kid could be counterproductive.
Choose a cycle that is right for his age, give and take a year or two. His feet should touch the ground when they are over the bar. It is always better to teach the kid to ride a bike without training wheels since that allows them to focus on the core of riding, which is balancing the cycle correctly.
3. Ensure to Gather Safety Equipments
Many parents choose to flout this norm but it is extremely essential to have the right helmet and protective gear for your child when learning to ride. Your child will definitely fall down multiple times and he shouldn’t end up hurting himself severely.
The helmet should fit snugly on his head. You could even use elbow and knee protectors to prevent him from scraping those areas. Cycling gloves are useful in this regard, too.
4. Choosing a Safe Place to Learn Riding
Don’t teach your kid to ride the bicycle on a busy street at the risk of passing vehicles. You might want to opt for a lawn instead due to the softness of the grass, but that will bring resistance to the cycle’s movements initially.
Opt for a lane that is rarely frequented by pedestrians or vehicles. A parking lot closer to your house is a good choice as well at the right time of the day.
Steps to Teach Your Kids to Ride a Bike
You can follow these steps while teaching your kids to ride a bike.
1. Balancing and Steering
The two major factors that involve riding a bicycle are balance and direction. These should be the first things your child learns.
Look for an inclined slope and push the cycle up to point where it won’t pick up a lot of speed. Then, let your child gradually start moving downwards and attempt to balance the cycle.
You can hold it from behind to keep the speed in control and let him focus on balancing it. Or he can make use of his legs to drag along the road to reduce the speed.
Let them begin to understand that balance comes not just from the seat but also from operating the handle correctly. They will start developing the assurance that the speed is under their control and learn to keep their feet off the ground.
2. Pedaling
Once the feet are off the ground, they need to start finding their place on the pedals. The position is a new one for your child to learn so it is best to try it out first while the bicycle is stationary on its main stand, or while you hold it steady.
When that gets comfortable, get him back up the slope and let the cycle come down with his feet on the pedals. Remind him to not be afraid since he can always stop the bike by dragging his feet on the ground.
Over time, your child will be used to the position of the pedals. Then he could try out pedalling by pedalling in the reverse direction gradually since that will not add to the speed. Maintaining balance while moving their legs will be a challenge initially.
As that works out, you can increase the position higher up the slope and let your child half-pedal while he comes down.
3. Braking
Nowadays, nearly all bikes come with coaster brakes installed. These are also termed as foot-operated brakes. What they generally do is counter the forward motion of the wheel slowly when backpedalled. This causes friction between the plates and brings the wheels to a stop.
Let your kid try that out while you hoist the cycle on the main stand. When that is done, try that out again on the slope and see if it works well.
The next step is to master the actual brakes that are located on the handlebars. One of the key things that your child needs to learn is to balance his own fear with the brakes. Generally, kids apply the brakes with full force unaware of the stopping mechanism. This brings the cycle to a quick halt, shifts the centre of gravity, and causes your child to topple over and fall down.
Let your child know that the brake intensity varies based on how hard the lever is pressed. Let him try doing that while gently pedalling on a flat road first. As he starts getting the hang of it, you can bring him back to the slope and let him try that out there.
Finally, when your child can brake gently, and resume pedalling without touching his feet to the ground, you will know that he is ready to cycle all by himself.
You might think of hiring a teacher for your child who delivers cycling lessons for children. But that truly isn’t necessary. As your child starts learning to ride, he also starts learning to trust you. That bond needs to be developed in real-life scenarios when he begins to understand the concepts of failure and mistakes and getting up to try again no matter what. Your continued support and words of appreciation will keep his hope going strong and his efforts will continue unabated. Having the knowledge that you will be there with him will give him the security he needs to conquer his fears and begin riding his bicycle confidently.

Your Child And Beauty Pageants - What To Do
There’s much debate and discussion about child beauty pageant pros and cons. Should you let your kids participate in them? There are arguments both for and against this. Have a look at what both sides have to say before you make up your mind.
Beauty pageants are looked upon as platforms for appearance rather than personality. Nowadays, there are pageants for kids as young as 1 too. The question is whether it’s appropriate for such young minds to take part in beauty contests. Before you decide to sign up or dismiss your child for beauty competitions, you should know the pros and cons.
Beauty Pageants for Kids: The Good and The Bad
The Upsides
1. Kids Understand the Importance of Discipline Early in Life
In order to prepare for beauty contests, a child has to undergo grooming lessons and hone her public speaking and presentation abilities. Many contests require kids to display their skills such as dancing, singing and acting. This helps them learn the importance of discipline to achieve their goals.
2. They Develop Social Skills
By participating in child modelling, children build on new connections and improve their social skills. They get a chance to mingle with kids from different regions, schools and backgrounds. They learn to be amicable with their fellow contestants.
3. They Learn About Game Spirit
Beauty pageants are fiercely competitive and can serve as a dais to teach a child about the spirit of participation. It's important for young kids to learn how to win gracefully and not be sore losers. On your part as a mommy, you need to celebrate your child’s participation even if she loses to keep her game spirit high.
The Downsides
1. Kids Face Enormous Pressure to Win
Your child is pitted against a large number of other kids and is expected to rise and shine above them. More often than not, mothers go overboard in their efforts to make sure that their daughters stay ahead of the pack. While deliberating kid beauty pageant pros and cons, parent's attitudes towards such contests is extremely crucial. You must let your child know what they’re getting into and set realistic expectations.
2. Beauty Contests May Deprive a Child of Innocence
Bright lipstick, heavy makeup, and fancy get-ups –all this is too grown-up for a preschooler. It can make kids, especially girls, very self-conscious of their appearance at a much earlier age than usual. It can also alter their body image altogether.
3. They May Become Over-anxious and Even Go Into Depression
Since beauty contests attach a lot importance to appearance, they can change the definition of accomplishment for your child. When she constantly worries about what others are thinking of her and falls under the pressure to look good, she can become anxious and introverted.
As mothers, you have a sense of what's appropriate for your child and what's not. Do your research before signing up your kid for the beauty pageants. While they may have a few benefits, they aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. There are very real downsides, which is why many parents keep their kids far away from beauty contests. Read more

Tips and tricks to make travelling with Toddlers an easy going ride
I am a mom of two toddlers aged 4 and 2.With the pandemic going on for the last couple of years travel has taken a back seat for everyone. With the things getting better now we decided it was high time for a family holiday. The very thought of travelling with two little kids makes one very very nervous. But the happiness ,joy and excitement you see on your children's faces and the experience that you get as a family makes it all worth the effort. We travelled through train to Katra and visited the holy shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi ji.Here I am sharing a few tips and tricks that made things smooth for us.Always carry a toilet seat sanitizer with you if you think you are on a long journey and kids might need to use public restrooms. This keeps you and the kids safe from infections. If your kids use a toilet trainer or a toilet seat make it a point to carry that along else they might have issues using the washroom and may turn cranky. If travelling to a hill station in cold weather layering up your kids helps a great deal. Always make sure your kids are warm enough. Carry puffer jackets , gloves and caps. I personally always buy jackets and sweaters with hood because children are usually not comfortable in wearing caps but they get used to wearing hood over time.Carry some light snacks and juices with you. Always keep children hydrated while on the go. Keep giving them something to eat frequently, this keeps them both warm and energetic and also keeps them involved.Always make all your bookings in advance.A hush hush travel is a no no with little children.Talk to them about how they feel , what all did they see and like. Our kids were super excited about their first train travel experience and we kept talking to them on the way and toddlers have a bucket full of questions always and ever , try and answer their questions. This makes them feel valued and enhances their travel experience.Always carry essential medicines with you like crocin, nasal spray, nasal drops etc. Try to carry a zinc acetate syrup , zinc is a tonic for stomach. So if they have some stomach related troubles due to outside food zinc helps a long way. PS: Always consult your pediatrician before giving any medicines to kids.Carry home remedies like I normally carry some hing (asafoetida), some fennel seeds (roasted and powdered mixed with a little powdered sugar) this helps in case of diarrhea and serves as a taste changer in case of vomiting.Let them enjoy some local food, a vacation is basically a break from the routine so let them get the feeling 😋Click lots and lots of pictures , it will be a memory that will last for a long time and something that they can associate a vacation with later. If travelling by car carry the stroller along, kids get tired faster and can't walk much. If you are travelling using a public transport most tourist places now have the facility of renting strollers. Rent them out and let the kids enjoy while they rest.Happy Holidaying 😃 Read more

A. If you have missed your periods you can wait for one week more or else you can do a urine pregnancy test to know about the pregnancy result and consult with your doctor according to the result for medication.
The best treatment to have Regular periods is by having a healthy lifestyle with regular daily walking or jogging along with mild exercise and meditation whenever possible. as medications will only act till you are taking them

A. it is better to follow your doctors advice for treating the thyroid deficiency. if there is no relief it is better you see your doctor for proper examination particularly physical examination if there is need for doing investigations to find out the problem and treatment ok
