How to Breastfeed a Baby at Workplace
Breastfeeding is one of the most important aspects of early development for a child, though it is a topic whose importance is continually debated, especially in the context of women in the workplace. Women have always worked and breastfed. But, in light of the continual presence of more and more women in the workforce, it becomes highly important to consider how and when to breastfeed at work, some of the advantages and disadvantages of breastfeeding at work, and what the duties and obligations of someone in that position might be.
Can You Breastfeed At Work?
It is important to note that, by all accounts, it is perfectly acceptable for a woman to breastfeed at work. While the schedule of breastfeeding and childcare might seem hard to reconcile with that of a busy job, it is possible to do so and can be done in a way that is flexible to the needs of you, your child, your family, and your caregiver.
While we will not discuss herein the exact health benefits to children of breast milk, needless to say, the benefits of breastfeeding at work are that you can ensure your baby is getting exactly the right food it needs, that you are able to express breast milk in line with your body’s rhythms. If you have any questions, you should seek out local and national legislation, and understand what you are entitled to in your workplace.
Do You Need To Inform Your HR Manager About Breastfeeding?
Legally, you are entitled to breastfeed at work, usually in prescribed breaks for the duration of the first 12-15 months of your baby’s life. While you are not required to talk to your HR manager, it is good that you do so and create a plan. Don’t be afraid to talk to your HR manager because most companies will be incredibly supportive of the need for a mother to breastfeed at work. If you are afraid to talk to a male HR manager about breastfeeding at work, or if it makes you uncomfortable, you should request to talk a female HR manager.
You can (and should) work together with your colleagues to create a more collaborative environment that is at once both helpful and accommodating to mothers. Women need privacy and time to express milk, and you should not be afraid to stand up for your rights to get what you need. In most cases, everyone involved benefits, including your business. There are health benefits to both babies and mothers, but there are also business benefits such as lower turnover, less absenteeism among female employees, improved productivity and morale, and even lower medical insurance claims.
Do not be afraid to talk to your HR manager, but know your rights and obligations before you do so.
How To Prepare For Breastfeeding At Work?
Try to take proactive steps, including contacting your employer before you return to work and letting them know that you will need to express milk two to three times per day upon returning to work. It is good to consider what policies are in place, as well as what the institutional and legal context is for breastfeeding is at your work and in your jurisdiction.
Before returning to work, you should also create a plan with your caregiver to determine when and how to feed your baby while you are at work. This can include stocking up on breast milk before you get back to work, introducing the baby to the bottle before you go back to work, and getting ready for how to use a breast milk pump regularly.
By most studies and accounts, the vast majority of women find breastfeeding at work somewhat difficult, for a variety of reasons. These reasons can range from finding time in the workday to talking about and feeling comfortable about it in the presence of other employees to physically expressing the breast milk itself in the midst of a busy workday. But, it is important to make a commitment. Juggling working and having a child is not easy, let alone the specific act of juggling working and breastfeeding.
Upon returning to your job, consider the difficulties and make a plan for you, your family, your caregiver and your healthcare provider that works best for the needs of both you and your child.
What is Mixed Feeding?
Essentially, mixed feeding means combining the two different types of feeding your child in modern child-rearing. One involves giving your baby breast milk, and the other involves giving your baby formula milk. With mixed feeding, when you are away from your child you will give them formula milk, but when you are with you will at all times possible give them breast milk.
Some proponents of this method argue that it gives nurturing and togetherness for mother and child before and after work – as well as the health benefits of organic breast milk – while still giving the mother time off during work where she does not have to express milk. Some other mothers will even have the option of using a machine to help produce breast milk that can be consumed by the child when mother and baby are separated. When doing the mixed feeding, it is important to consider formula milk over other forms of milk, such as those from cows or buffaloes.
Whether you choose to breastfeed at work, mixed feeding or moving to formula milk entirely, consider the pros and cons of every approach and make the decision that is right for you.
Advantages And Disadvantages Of Breastfeeding While Working
While breastfeeding at work might seem like the obvious option, there are both advantages and disadvantages in doing so, and you will need to make a decision that is right for you.
Some of the advantages of breastfeeding at work include:
It is a great option for helping to keep a routine and maintain a connection that can have positive health benefits for your child.
Breastfeeding in the workplaces means you know that your baby is getting exactly the right food and all the health benefits of breast milk, even if you are not there to provide it.
Being able to breastfeed at work can lead to more confidence and support in your daily life.
Breastfeeding at work will probably improve your productivity and morale, as it will give you regular breaks and lower your cognitive load about your child when you are at the workplace.
Some of the disadvantages of breastfeeding at work include:
The act of breastfeeding while working can be very tiring, and hard to incorporate into a routine that you find comfortable for yourself.
Not all workplaces are going to be mother-friendly, but you can work with HR to help develop a plan that suits your need and create a comfortable and hygienic workplace to express milk in.
Breastfeeding and working can require a lot of planning and organization – such as with pumps and bottles – and is not always suited to the routines of all women or employees.
It can take a while for your breasts to adjust to the spaces between feeds, especially if you are also incorporating mixed feeding or bottle feeding into the routine of you and your baby.
Tips For Breastfeeding For Working Women
While there are advantages and disadvantages to breastfeeding at work, if you make the decision, there are many issues to consider. The following are tips on how to best manage to breastfeed and work at the same time.
1. Prepare for Going Back to Work
Do an assessment of where you are at with your breastfeeding and what the necessary preparation you need to do to be ready to breastfeed at work is. Consult your caregiver and your family and determine what the best strategy is for all those involved in this process.
2. Consider Timing
Have a night and weekend plan, and consider when to express milk during the days and weeks. Make sure to return to work when you are ready, and try to make plans with your employer regarding your breastfeeding before you do.
3. Have a Strategy for Your Company
Be proactive about talking to your company before you return to work, and have a plan in mind before you talk to them. Fight for your rights and have a strategy for working with not only your company but other employees as well.
4. Think About Pumps
Get a good pump that will help you to express milk even when your child is not present. While a single, manual pump can be tempting because of its affordability and ease of use, it might be worth considering something like a double, electric pump, which can save a lot of time and is often more efficient.
5. Be Creative
Find the best place and time to breastfeed at work, and be creative in the way that you do it. Try to establish a routine and find novel or clever way in which you can make that routine easier for yourself, such as wiping pumps down between uses or stocking up on tools that make the whole process easier.
6. Do Your Research
Research and ask questions about everything you do not know, such as the best guidelines for storing milk and whether or not to use a bottle. Make sure you have all the necessary information before you make a decision, but also don’t be afraid to ask questions, especially of other mothers who have gone through what you are going through.
7. Know Your Limits
Understand your own limitations and the stress that might be put on you by breastfeeding at work and create a strategy that works best for you. Whatever you decide when you go back to your job, give it a trial period – such as for 30 days – and then see how that goes.
8. Connect with Your Child
Whatever you decide on for how to nourish your child – and whether or not to breastfeed at work – make sure to not to lose the connection with your baby. Nursing, even if you give formula milk during the day, can be an important way to reconnect with your baby after a long day apart.
Breastfeeding at work is an important reality in the lives of modern women. While all women have the right to breastfeed in the workplace, there are many things they should do to prepare. Breastfeeding at work can be difficult and time-consuming, and while it is manageable, there are advantages and disadvantages to doing it. Before returning to work, you should make the appropriate arrangements with your family, your caregiver and your workplace to make sure that breastfeeding at work is doable for you as a mother.

Sugar for Kids - How Much is Too Much?
Sugar is hard to let go, but the consequences of consuming it will at least make you reconsider your choice. Everyone loves kids and kids love sweets. This is the very reason that people offer tempting sweets to kids that make them happy. But, how much is too much is the question here. Sugar is important to consume but to what extent, should be known.
What is Sugar?
Sugar generally appears white in colour, and it is scientifically known as sucrose, a compound that is made from hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen.
There are a number of forms in which sugar is available, such as:
1. White Table Sugar
This is the most common type of sugar available in almost every household. This type of sugar is derived from sugarcane plant that is grown extensively around the globe for its naturally occurring sweetening properties.
2. Honey
Honey is the type of sugar that originates from beehives. This type of sugar is believed to be a healthy sweet and is recommended for people who are on a diet or prefer to consume healthy sweetening agent.
3. Maple Syrup
This is the type of sugar that is derived from the sap of maple tree. The compound that is found in high intensities in maple sugar is sucrose. It has a unique flavour and is commonly used as a sweetener in waffles, pancakes, or oatmeal.
4. Brown Sugar
This is a type of sugar that is a blend of white sugar and molasses. Brown sugar is naturally moist as the molasses are known to be hygroscopic, and for the same reason, this sugar is known as “soft.”
Is Eating Sugar Bad for Kids?
Eating sugar is not bad, but consuming it in excess can have an adverse impact on their health. Moreover, the type of sugar preferred also decides its effect on a kid’s health. When sugar is consumed beyond a specific limit, it may result in negative effects on a kid’s overall, long-term health.
Why is Sugar in Fruit Healthier than Sugar in Other Food Entities?
All types of sugar contain calories whether the source is a fruit or any other food entity. But the sugar in fruits is known as “natural” sugar, which is a blend of sucrose, fructose, and glucose. Fruits contain sugar is a fact, but it only contains it in limited amounts. But other forms of food contain “free” sugar, which can affect one’s health to a great extent.
This is because the sugar contained in other food entities has been extracted from its natural source and thus contain more sweetening content. Studies have shown that foods that contain free sugar can lead to tooth decay or obesity in kids and thus should be avoided to an extent. However, fruits though they contain sugar, should be preferably served to kids as it will not only help in keeping them hydrated but will also help in developing good eating habits.
How Much Sugar Should a Child Have Per Day?
According to World Health Organization, 10% of a day’s energy comes from sugar. But, in this case, the recommended sugar intake for kids should not exceed 5% on a routine basis. Talking about kids’ sugar intake, for a girl kid, of about 5-7 years, 6-10 spoons of sugar would be more than enough. On the other hand, if the kid is a boy, 8-12 spoons of added sugar should be fine.
Effects of Eating Too Much Sugar on Kids
Excess of anything is harmful, so is the case with sugar. Some harmful effects of consuming too much sugar in kids include:
1. Malnutrition
When your kid consumes sugar, he may feel full. This is because sugar content augments the blood glucose that, in turn, makes the hunger urges fade away. So it is recommended to stop your kids from consuming any form of sweets in excess, as this may distance them from a proper and a nutritious diet required for the proper growth of their mind and body.
2. Causes Virus-Like Symptoms
Not all but many kids get diagnosed with allergies and infections due to over-consumption of sugar. It could be a runny nose or even infections related to frequent urination. Some kids may also develop a cough when they are asleep. This happens when sugary dairy products are served to kids as this can lead to acidic creations in the system that further leads to muscle spasms inside the larynx.
3. Obesity
Serving your kids excess sugar can definitely lead to obesity. And, an important fact to consider here is that not only foods that contain sugar should be avoided, but also beverage consumption should be limited. Even WHO recommends limiting sugar intake that comes from fruit juices, processed foods, pies, chocolates, and syrups.
4. Skin Issues
Kids who consume more of sugar are susceptible to dandruff, skin roughness, acne, or even rosacea. This is because when a body gets continuous doses of sugar foods, it becomes insulin resistant, which, in turn, leads to excessive hair growth on the skin and even dark patches on the skin area. Sugar also leads to inflammation and wrinkles on the skin which may become difficult to recover from.
5. Interfering Child's Ability to Learn and Remember
When a kid consumes sugar content in excess, the amount of BDNF or more aptly brain-derived neurotrophic factor gradually decreases. And, this is the very chemical that helps in retaining memory and helps in developing responsiveness. Thus, these negative effects of sugar on children may lead to lack of learning or grasping power.
6. Cavities
There are bacteria present in a kids’ mouth, and when he consumes sugary food, the sugar reacts with bacteria to create acid, which further results in tooth decay or cavities.
7. Diabetes
Sugar is related to obesity in kids has already been spoken about. But, diabetes, specifically Type 2 diabetes is related to obesity, thus when an excess of sugar is served to kids’ they may become vulnerable to developing serious diseases like diabetes.
8. Behaviour Issues
Talking about how sugar affects children’s behaviour, it should be known that it is refined sugar that amplifies aggressiveness in a kid. This is because kids show sensitivity towards sugar content due to weaker immunity and thus, intake of excessive sugar leads to rushing in of adrenaline. This rush of hormones also correlates sugar and hyperactivity in children, making it difficult to handle such situations.
How to Get Kids off Sugar - 7 Effective Tips
Tips that can help kids stay safe from the negative effects of sugar, include:
1. Substitute
Substituting free sugar with natural sugar is a viable option. Instead of serving pies and chocolates, offer fresh yoghurt and fresh juices to kids.
2. Modify the Juice
Even if you are serving processed or artificial juices to your kids, prefer adding freshly cut fruits or cucumber to it, to reduce the sugar content it originally has to offer.
3. Cut Down on Sugary Drinks
Be it soda, sports drinks, or even that morning breakfast orange juice; cut down on these drinks too and rather help your kids developing a habit of drinking more of water.
4. Do Not Rely on Healthy Alternatives
Don’t live in a misconception that honey is always good for health owing to its natural background. It is a better alternative to sugar, but an excess of it can also be harmful.
5. Prefer Plain or Fruit Mixed Yoghurt
Yoghurt is good for health. But when you buy a yoghurt can, make sure it is a plain one with no added sugar content or artificial flavours. And, if your kid does not like his yoghurt plain, add freshly cut fruits to it.
6. Make Your Kids Aware
Teaching your kids values from the very beginning is important. Tell your kids what sugar can do to their health. Also, give them live examples and explain them patiently why they should cut down on sugar.
7. Prefer a Gradual Change
Do not force your kids to cut down on the sugar consumption all at once. Rather take it slow. Start small and then gradually reduce their sugar-laden food.
This was some useful information pertaining to how much sugar is too much for kids. A kid’s health is important and helping him develop good eating habits from the very start can help him stay healthy and fit in the long-run.

Crazy But Adorable Ways you Lie to your Kids!
Have you been avoiding sticky situations by saying some common lies to your kids? Yeah, raising kids can be tough. But keep the guilt away. After all, you too grew up hearing these common lies parents tell their children!
"Santa brought them last night—Merry X-mas dear!” This was probably the first lie that you heard as a kid. You were much smaller before your first Christmas to comprehend other lies anyway. And then, you said the same thing to your toddler. While not all lies are this cute, most parents resort to some of them either to bring smiles or to keep tantrums away!
Common Lies Parents Tell Their Children
1. ‘You were put into mommy’s lap by God. That’s where all little ones come from.’
Oh yeah! And Daddy had no role to play, eh? But then, you cannot explain sexual intercourse, gestation period and ovulation to your kiddo until the opportune time arrives. Till then, keep up the imaginative tale!
2. ‘Stop making weird faces; you will be stuck like that.”
How weird can concerned parents get? This cute little lie has escaped the lips of many moms and dads giving slanting looks to children making funny faces. If tiny tots knew better, they would be scanning your face and comparing them to your previous ones every time you smirked, twitched, or grimaced. Now, wouldn’t that be funny?
3. “Finish your glass of milk. You'll become big and strong!”
You probably drank many more tall glasses of milk to make yourself big and strong but milk seems to behave differently for different people! The goodness of milk is exaggerated by most moms and ranks high on the list of lies parents tell their kids. So what? You only have your child’s good health in mind and there's no denying milk is crucial.
4. “Ear piercings at this place will not hurt.”
Your girl will definitely wonder if a piercing gun can be anything but painful. She also went through the same web of lies during her vaccinations, remember? But then, it has to be done; pain or no pain—okay!
5. “You can forget about the vacation if your holiday homework is incomplete.”
Your kid’s tickets were probably booked before yours. And you've already booked that hotel with special facilities for children. What are you talking about? But then, a common lie such as this has the immediate effect of making crayons move faster or letters forming better on paper—try for yourself!
The list of innocent lies such as these is endless. Each mom makes up her own too! Don't worry mommies; keep getting creative for getting things done, hearing that precious chuckle or keeping your little one healthy! Read more
