Why Should I Send my Child to Playgroups?
With couples increasingly settling for single child families, a child’s initiation into socializing and making friends has become more difficult. Playgroups are a boon that way, since they help make your preschooler gregarious and open out to other children of her own age group. Read on to know the benefits of playgroups and what you need to know before deciding to send your child to one.
A few decades ago, the concept of playgroup was unheard of. That is because there wasn’t really a need for them, with every home having at least a couple of children and a lot of children in the neighborhood, who would play together, and run freely in and out of each other’s homes and on the streets. Making friends, socializing, sharing and teamwork; therefore, came naturally to most of the children.
Today, however, the scene is different. Children hardly get to play with other children in their neighborhood, thanks to the boxed apartment houses where one hardly gets to see their neighbors. In such a scenario, playgroups have become essential to help children mingle with kids of their own age.
Generally speaking, playgroups can be categorized into two main types –
1. Initiated and Run By Parents
This is quite prevalent in a lot of countries. Mommies of a locality get together to plan and organize play dates. Here children between a specific age group, accompanied by their mothers, can play together, while the mothers watch them from a distance over a cup of coffee and chat with other mothers.
2. Facilitated By A Preschool
This kind of set up is quite common in India, where a preschool also runs a playgroup, which is almost akin to the nursery, but there is no studying. The children are made to play with various items to improve their motor skills – both gross and fine. The school organizes a plethora of activities to keep the children engaged, while children learn to make friends along with doing fun activities together.
Whether you want to become a member of a parent-run playgroup or a preschool, there are a few things to consider so that your child’s first group play experience is a pleasant one.
Check Out the Scene
If you are enrolling your child in a parent-run playgroup, checkout other members of the group to see if your child and you will be comfortable in the group. Some children tend to be too aggressive while some are shy. Some mothers have different preferences and parenting ideas than the others. It is as important for you to gel well with other mommies in the group, as your child with other children. Also consider the activities the children do together, whether there is any intervention or facilitation of activities for the children. Preschools offer facilitated play times and exclusive staff to attend the children, whereas in mommy groups, unless the mommies are making an effort to organize the tots’ playtime, it could just be free play.
Rules and Standards
No kidding! Rules and standards are as important in a playgroup environment as in any other. It is important to set the expectations from the playgroup – what will be taught, or not taught, how will aggression and fighting between the kids be handled, whether the kid is required to be potty- trained (some playgroups insist that the child should come in diapers if not potty-trained; others insist otherwise, emphasizing their staff will take care of taking the child to the bathroom at regular intervals).
Safety and Hygiene
These are the most important aspects in any environment where the child is going to be given a free rein. Ensure that the play area is padded with good quality mats to break falls, the toys are made of good materials and do not have broken or sharp edges. Ensure that the bathrooms are clean and hygienic, and children are made to wash hands after playing or before eating. Ask the facilitators how they handle accidents or mishaps; whether they have first aid and how and when do they clean the premises.
Duration
Playgroups are typically meant for children aged between 1.5 and 3, ones that are not old enough to go to school yet. The duration of playgroups should be decided by keeping in mind the capacity of these children. Ideally, a playgroup session can last for up to two hours, with a snack break, free play time and quiet time included. Children of this age do not have the attention span of more than 15 minutes, so the playgroup should include small activities with a lot of varieties in them.
Sending your child to a playgroup or not is a personal decision, one that you should take keeping in mind the social characteristics of your child. You may decide not to send your child if she already has a great group of siblings and pals at home, or you may decide to send her quite early, if she is too clingy to you and you want her to become independent. Whatever may be the case, do remember that the idea is only to get the kids interact with others like them and give them their first exposure to the outer world. Read more

Importance of Reading To 2 Year Old Toddlers
Parents often have mixed opinions about reading to their child. While it is definitely educating, it can also be cumbersome and boring. However, taking into account the benefits is reason to read to your child for sure. Unfurl several reasons that toast the importance of reading to your toddlers.
There is no denying the fact that reading is one of the best ways to learn about new things. While your toddler may not be able to read yet, he can still enjoy the world of books. Wondering how? Well, go ahead and read to him!
How to Initiate Toddler Memory Development Through Reading
Time and again, it has been proved that children who are read to from a young age have a higher aptitude for languages. What's more, such children have more chances of excelling in their academics in the later years when compared to little ones whose parents don't read to them. One of the main benefits of reading to toddlers is that it inculcates the love for books and reading from a very young age. Also, the intonations and inflections used by the parent influence the reading abilities of the child.
Super Reasons to Read to your Child
1. Basics of Reading
Reading is in no way an inborn talent and has to be nurtured with practice. The fact that one should read from left to right becomes known to your toddler only when you read to him while tracing the words with your fingers.
2. Understanding Letters and Words
For a toddler, the words and letters on a page are just black marks. One of the major benefits of reading in child development is that the tot starts to understand that each and every mark on the page has a sound associated with it and can be strung together to form words.
3. Better Vocabulary
When you read to your toddler, you are actually helping him in building his vocabulary. The more you read, the more are the chances that your tot will learn new words and would also understand the right way to use them. This is why reading is so important for kids.
4. Learning the Alphabets
Your tot may be too young to start reading words and sentences, but he can definitely be taught to identify letters of the alphabets while you are reading out to him. Pointing out different letters and then asking your toddler to repeat them can help you in teaching him the alphabets. Including a book of alphabets in your 2-year-old's reading list would be a good idea.
5. Reading is Fun!
When you start reading to your child from an early age, you're inculcating a very positive habit in your child. One of the main importance of reading to your toddler in an engaging way is that he would identify this as a relaxing activity rather than a tedious one. This would go a long way in encouraging your child to be a book lover.
Reading to your child would also help in improving his concentration and memory. With the number of benefits that reading to toddlers have, make sure you set aside some time every day to read to your child. Read more

Childcare Experts Reveal 10 Secrets of Daddy-Baby Bonding – It’s Daddy Time!
Moms get all the attention when the baby is born, and rightly so after the long wait and the pain. But Dad's, the silent heroes, they waited patiently to meet their little ones too, they shared their wives pain at delivery, feeling helpless. A father's bond with a baby can make or break a child's future personality. Let's look at the importance of a father in a baby's life and ways in which they can bond better.
The relationship that a mother and her baby share has long been the favourite subject of poets, writers and film-makers. After all, what could be purer and stronger than the love a woman feels for someone she nourished and tended to, even before they came into the world? The connection that mothers develop with their babies during pregnancy is part of the reason they can bond so fast after delivery. But what about a father’s parental bond? When and how can he bond with his little bub?
Traditionally, fathers have been kept removed from the core aspects of baby care. They were not expected to spend much time with their child, and take on their fatherly role only when the child grew up and needed help with studies or sports. But the modern dad of today has evolved into a sensitive and thoughtful man who wants to be there for his wife and children, right from the start. And this begins with bonding with his newborn baby.
Importance of Father Baby Bonding
A growing body of research underlines the magic – and importance – of father-baby bonding.
When fathers bond with their newborn babies, it significantly boosts the child’s physical and emotional development.
As the child grows up, this early bonding helps her tackle future problems better and take reassurance from her realm of support.
The benefits extend to the fathers too, who experience less stress and more confidence when they learn to bond with their babies.
Men who are able to support their partners in looking after the baby tend to feel less competitive and more comfortable about their marriage.
Secrets of Daddy-Baby Bonding
For all its amazing benefits, bonding with the baby remains a struggle for many fathers, especially in the early days. This is entirely normal. Newborns are extremely sensitive and fragile, and the prospect of caring for this new little person can seem overwhelming. There is also a hormonal reason behind the situation. A group of Canadian researchers has found that men experience hormonal shifts during their wives’ pregnancies, especially in cortisol (stress hormone) and prolactin (hormone linked to parenting behaviour). However, these hormones tend to revert to their pre-pregnancy levels over time, making many dads take a backseat after the first rush of pregnancy/delivery is over.
But all that can change.
We have collected ten tips that childcare experts recommend for daddy-baby bonding. Get your husband to try them out in the coming months, and watch the magic unfold between him and your little one!
1. Bottlefeed The Baby
One of the strongest bonding experiences that moms share with their babies is breastfeeding. When the baby is suckling at the breast, she can feel her mother’s breathing, heartbeat and warmth. A good way for dads to replicate this is to take on the responsibility of bottle-feeding the baby (expressed breast milk or formula milk).
Schedule the feedings in such a manner that your husband can be in-charge of at least one feeding during the day/night. Show your husband how to hold the baby close and feed her using the bottle. Childcare experts recommend that fathers should cuddle their babies close and make eye contact.
Tip: Fathers can wear their babies in a sling or front carrier after feeding. This promotes skin-to-skin contact and also keeps the baby upright after feeding (so the milk can go down smoothly).
2. Soothe Her When She Cries
Soothing the baby’s tears has somehow always been looked at as the mother’s responsibility. As soon as the little one gets fussy or cranky, family and friends hand her over to the mother. It is true that a mother’s instincts about her baby are never wrong, which means that she’ll probably be able to calm the infant the quickest. However, according to childcare experts, this is a brilliant opportunity for dads to forge a special relationship with their little ones.
Encourage your husband to try to soothe the baby when she cries. He can gently rock her, sing to her, make funny faces, or use another innovative idea that strikes him. When he makes an attempt to soothe the baby, she will slowly understand that this ‘Dad’ person is also quite a star!
3. Give Baby a Massage
Touch is one of your baby’s favourite sensations, and anyone who uses touch therapy automatically gains favour! Science highly recommends a baby massage for boosting overall health and development as well as bringing you closer to your baby.
Show your husband how to gently massage the baby, focusing on her legs, back, belly and arms. Use a highly absorbing oil like Baby Dove Massage Oil that gets quickly absorbed in the skin and minimises chances of slipping. This oil is very moisturising and will leave the baby feeling soft, supple and relaxed. Dads can take on the massage duty a few times during the week. They can also give an unscheduled massage at any time the baby is well-rested and hasn’t recently been fed.
4. Participate in One Baby Routine Regularly
Babies love routine. It makes them feel secure and in a familiar environment where things happen as expected. Day after day, babies get accustomed to having their moms doing things for them – e.g. changing diapers, giving them a bath, or helping them fall asleep. Mom becomes the one who’s always there for their needs. To promote daddy-baby bonding, experts recommend that fathers should try to be responsible for one routine every day. It could be anything – playing with them in the evening, changing their diapers before bed-time, or telling them a bed-time story.
Bonus: When dads become in-charge of a daily routine, it also helps the baby understand the concept of routine better. For example – the baby may be fussy and unwilling to go to sleep. But when dad declares its bed-time, like he does every night, she knows that’s its time for the Zzzzs!
5. Dedicated Play-Time
An almost-foolproof trick for bonding with a newborn is to play together! Babies are born with a natural streak of fun and love anyone who makes funny expressions and sounds. It is a good idea for fathers to set aside some time every day, say in the evening, for playing with the baby. Once this becomes a regular activity, the baby will start anticipating it and waiting for daddy to come home!
One of our WOM moms, Priya Iyer, shares, “It is tough to get the bub to sit still for more than a few minutes at a time. When I’m exhausted running after her all day long, the husband takes over. He then goes on to play silly, little games with her, like pretending to remove her nose and then putting it right back on her face. They count the fingers and toes on each of their hands and feet, together, giving a fun name to each one of them.”
6. Move With Your Baby
Little ones love movement. They grew to love it when they were in their mother’s womb, and she walked, stretched, and moved her hips. Movement equals familiarity and comfort for babies. This presents a good opportunity for fathers to bond with the infant – just move with them!
Ask your husband to hold the baby close and rock her gently. He can take her out for a walk in a stroller or a papoose-style carrier (baby sling). He can also have a little dance party with her (babies love to dance!). A bonus benefit of this activity is that movement boosts your baby’s proprioceptors or the sensory receptors that teach the baby the concepts of space and position.
7. Have Daddy-Baby Conversations
“What?!” That’s a common response from many fathers when they are told to talk to their baby. Some Dads tend to think that interacting with the baby doesn’t have much point as its just like talking to oneself. However, childcare experts have found that fathers who interact with their babies in the early days can reap wonderful results! Dr. Lin Day, the founder of Baby Sensory development classes, says that babies benefit tremendously from an early paternal interaction. “They're academically more successful, stay in school longer, use drugs and alcohol less frequently and are less likely to get involved with crime."
Encourage your husband to talk to your baby as they play or spend time together. Experts have also noted that men tend to use more difficult vocabulary with the baby (as opposed to moms who tone it down), and this can be useful for the baby’s language development.
8. Dive Into Bath-Time
Many babies love splashing around in the water. Anyone who accompanies them on this fun activity becomes a favourite person!
Show your husband how you bathe your baby in the tub/how you give her a sponge-bath. He can help you cleanse your baby’s skin, keep her occupied with bath toys, or help you dry her after the bath. Use a moisturising soap/body wash for the bath so that your baby’s skin doesn’t get dry and she remains happy and playful. Baby Dove Rich Moisture Bar is a good pick – it is infused with 1/4 moisturising cream, making it gentle and very nourishing.
9. Combine Feeding and Bed-Time
This secret works brilliantly if you are feeding your baby solely through the breast and not using the bottle at all. No, doing this doesn’t mean that fathers will be deprived of a bonding opportunity. Dr. William Sears, a paediatrician based in California, suggests that you can turn this into a win-win situation by entrusting your husband with the post-feeding nap.
After your baby is done feeding, ease her into your husband’s arms. Let him burp her and help her fall asleep. Babies usually get drowsy after feeding and will be more open to accepting someone other than mom helping them nap. Once they get used to it, they’ll start turning to Daddy for comfort, just like they do to Mommy!
10. Let Daddy Take Charge
This last secret is exclusively for you, mommies. For your husband and baby to bond, it is important that you give them their space. If you constantly interfere with how your husband tends to the baby or pull him down because he is not a hands-on-dad, it will erode his confidence. It will also transfer negative vibes to the baby who will not grow to trust her father. Men might seem rather vague and helpless around babies at first, but, given time, most of them develop innovative tips and tricks of parenting!
Have faith that your husband will be able to take care of the baby; don’t hover around constantly. Let him develop his own techniques of soothing her and helping her fall asleep. Reassure him – both of his confidence as a father and of your confidence in him.
What to Do if Your Husband and Baby Still Don’t Bond
The above tips should help your husband develop a close bond with your baby. However, there may be occasions where the father still struggles to feel the attachment, or embrace his role of fatherhood, even months after the baby’s birth. A possible cause of this is a mood disorder. Your husband could also be suffering from paternal postpartum depression (PPD). According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, up to 10 percent of new fathers develop PPD.
If your husband shows signs of irritability, fatigue or feeling guilty, consult your doctor for advice. PPD is a condition that can be resolved with therapy.

Easy Homemade Paneer/cottage cheese best suited for the kids!
When babies do not prefer milk the best we can try is to give them indirectly. Why not in the form of Paneer. I was not comfortable in giving packaged paneer for my 1 year old baby . Best option was to make paneer at home . I was not sure using lime to make paneer for baby is fine, considering babies digestion. Therefore I started making fresh paneer with curd. Curd is good for babies. So here it goes with the simple procedure.
What is Paneer?
Paneer is fresh cheese. It is an non melting cheese. Also called as cottage cheese.
Ingredients:
1 liter full fat milk ,
1/4 cup curd.
Method:
Boil the milk. Keep stirring occasionally.
Keep a cotton cloth ready to strain.
When milk comes to boil ( you don't have to boil too much as it is full fat milk)add curd and keep stirring let the stove be on.
Turn off the stove as soon as the milk curdles(if it doesn't curdle add more curd).
Strain the paneer in a cotton cloth .
Leave it for a couple of hours for all the excess water to drain off.
And the paneer is ready to make anything your baby would prefer.
To start with I just stir fried paneer with some butter , stuffed paneer parata, ragullas with very little brown sugar and my baby liked it. So with this we are happy that somehow milk is given and also some changes/variety which all the kids expect.
Please note once made I refrigerate and only for 3 days i use them for my baby considering freshness . Remainder I keep to make something for us may be for a week we can refrigerate.
Benefits of Paneer for babies:
Healthy Hair and skin.
Growth.
Rich in Minerals.
Bone development .

Proper Upbringing Can Influence Your Child's Attitude From Childhood
I am a mother of an 18-months old baby boy. In the current era, it is very important to provide your kids with the right upbringing and impart the right values and morals to them. Personally, I noticed a few things in my house that intrigued my interest, especially during this lockdown when I was home 24/7 every day.
It is a well-known truth that our way of upbringing impacts our children’s brains – their understanding, life values, and attitude towards family, work, other people, time, responsibilities, relationships, and everything around.
I have noticed my little boy tries to copy me in the household chores I do, like mopping the floor, cutting vegetables, folding clothes, etc. It is a common characteristic of all toddlers to copy their elders. However, most Indian families don’t appreciate or accept the baby boys imitating household work as they believe it is the woman’s task.
If someone slaps my little boy, he never hits them back, which, according to me, is a very good gesture. However, the elders complain that he always gets hit by others as a girl would. As parents and elders, if we fill our sons’ minds with such discriminatory and regressive ideas, they will eventually believe and follow the same. From childhood, it will be etched in their minds that they are better and superior to girls and will treat them in derogatory ways.
Thus, as responsible and progressive parents, we must encourage our kids to help us with household chores, irrespective of gender. We should teach our children that household chores are not gender-based but necessary to live. These are not activities that only girls, mothers, wives, sisters are supposed to do for us.
I hope all new mommies can relate to the idea and nurture their kids to grow up as better human beings. As proper upbringing impacts a kid’s life since childhood, ensure they are disciplined, punctual, responsible, and respectful.
