Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP) During Pregnancy: Causes, Symptoms, And Treatment
Pelvic girdle pain (PGP) during pregnancy is not uncommon. If you are pregnant, this is something you must know about. PGP can begin as early as the first trimester or as late as just a few days before delivery.
PGP in early pregnancy can be due to the fact that your baby’s head is moving down the pelvis, a term known as ‘engaging’. PGP starts in pregnancy, but you might feel the pain even after giving birth, and if you are lucky, you will not experience the pain at all. However, if you do, then knowing about the causes, symptoms and treatment will surely be helpful. Read on to know more.
What Is Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP)?
The pelvis is the area in your body where both your hip bones are located. On the front, the hip bones are joined by the pubis symphysis which is a very stiff joint. At the back, they are attached to the sacrum bone. A network of strong ligaments keeps these bones in place.
Pelvic girdle pain is an umbrella term that is used to describe pain in the joints of the pelvis, and this includes:
Joints connecting to the sacrum, or triangular bone that is present at the back, between the hip bones of your pelvis.
Symphysis pubis joint, which is the joint connecting the two halves of your pelvis in the front. This is known as symphysis pubis dysfunction or SPD.
What Happens To Your Pelvis During Pregnancy?
During delivery, your baby needs to pass through the birth canal which is located in the pelvis. A hormone named relaxin is secreted when you are pregnant and helps make the pelvic ligaments soft. The ligaments are thus able to stretch so that the baby can move out comfortably. This is why your pelvic joint moves more when you are pregnant and after you have given birth. While relaxin is secreted in both pregnant and non-pregnant women, the secretion increases during pregnancy and it continues to rise throughout the first trimester. After a steady increase in the initial stage of pregnancy, the secretion of relaxin rises again during the final weeks.
Hormonal influence sometimes relaxes the connecting bones and ligaments leading to a gap of as much as 9 mm between the pelvic bones- a condition known as diastasis symphysis pubis (DSP). However, DSP in pregnancy is not necessarily the cause of PGP. Your muscles and nerves are able to cope and adapt to the greater flexibility of your pelvic girdle. As a result, your body copes well with the changes that your posture undergoes as the baby grows inside the womb.
Causes Of Pelvic Pain During Pregnancy
A combination of factors is responsible for pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy. Some of them are:
Changes in the way your muscles work in order to support your girdle
Uneven movements of the joints in your pelvis
One of the joints not working smoothly, and causing stress to the other joints of your pelvic girdle
Generally, when you are walking, sitting, standing up, or lying down, your pelvis is in a stable or locked position. When you are pregnant, there are times when you have to do these activities with an unlocked or less stable pelvis and this is what causes the pain.
This results in swelling of the joints, which is the primary cause of PGP.
More than half of all pregnant women suffer from pelvic girdle pain or pain in the back.
Though pelvic girdle pain is common during pregnancy, it is not something which should be accepted as normal. It is important that you do not ignore this pain and it is best if you consult a doctor. The pain can get worse if you leave it untreated.
Signs & Symptoms Of PGP/SPD
The location and the intensity of pain usually differs from one woman to another. You may experience the pain on just one side or the pain may jump from one side to another. The pain may also shoot to the back of your legs or buttocks. PGP can easily be confused with sciatica as many of the symptoms are the same.
The symptoms of PGP and SPD include pain in:
The symphysis pubis joint
The lower back
The sacroiliac joints at the back
At the back and front of the thigh
The groin area
Around the hips
The pelvic floor and around your anal and vaginal openings
The pain usually gets worse if you do not take proper measures. Certain activities which you might consider restful can also make the pain worse. Lying down and turning over on your bed, and even some sex positions can become painful because of PGP. Standing or sitting for a long time can also elevate the pain. The symptoms are usually worse during the night.
Pelvic girdle pain can lead to other issues which may make your pregnancy a difficult journey. The constant pain may sometimes make you resent the cause, and you may experience emotional symptoms like depression, sadness, isolation, frustration, guilt, and anger.
Types Of Pain You Can Feel With Pelvic Girdle Pain
PGP is a wide term which covers various categories of pain. These include:
Diastasis of the Symphysis Pubis (DSP): This is pain caused when the pubic bones, which are normally joined, are separated causing an abnormally large gap
Pelvic Joint Syndrome: This is caused by the pain caused by the abnormal movement of the pelvic joint
Posterior Pelvic Pain: This pain is similar to the pelvic joint pain. It radiates to the back of the thigh from the buttocks
Here are some of the detailed explanations of the different pains that could occur:
Pelvic Arthropathy: This joint disease causes pain and can limit your mobility.
Symphysiolysis: This involves the slipping or the separation of the symphysis (cartilaginous joint between two bones).
Inferior Pubic Shear / Superior Pubic Shear / Symphyseal Shear: This involves the dysfunction of one of your pubic bones.
Osteitis pubis (usually postpartum): This happens when the pubis symphysis and the surrounding muscles get inflamed.
Hypermobility: You will be able to move your joints easily beyond the normal range.
Sacroiliitis: This involves the inflammation and pain in the sacroiliitis joint (where the pelvis and lower spine connect)
Symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD): Involves excessive movement of the pubis along with pain.
Physiological Pelvic Girdle Relaxation: Ligament relaxation that causes too much pain during pregnancy.
Why Is The Pelvic Position Important In Pregnancy?
A strong pelvis will always aid in your pregnancy and make the delivery less painful for you. Pregnancy puts a lot of stress on your pelvic floor and it tends to become weaker before the baby is born. It also becomes stretched. Doctors recommend pelvic floor exercises so that it doesn’t become weak. Strong muscles will support your baby’s weight and help in healing the muscle between your anus and vagina, after delivery.
The pelvis is one of the most crucial body parts that will be stressed during child birth. It is crucial that it is taken care of and not stressed too much as any complications could cause severe pain later on.
Who is Most at Risk?
Women in the later stages of pregnancy are at a higher risk for PGP. The risk of PGP increase in the following cases:
You have a history of lower back pain.
You have experienced PGP in a previous pregnancy.
Diagnosis Of PGP
If you are experiencing any pain in and around your pelvic region, it is advisable to visit a doctor. Do also talk to your doctor if you experience acute lower back pain. The doctor will examine you and ask questions to know where exactly the pain is originating. Make sure you know what kind of movements or activities are inducing the pain so that you are able to provide all information that your doctor needs for an accurate diagnosis.
PGP is often thought to be sciatica, even by the doctors. You can get yourself checked by physiotherapists as well, just to be sure. However, the physiotherapist should be someone who has experience with pregnant women.
Treatment Of Pelvic Pain In Pregnancy
Treatment for pelvic pain in pregnancy is not difficult. There are many things that you can do yourself to reduce the pain. Certain lifestyle changes and regular exercise can go a long way in treating PGP and making your pregnancy better.
Here are some ways to get relief from pelvic pain during pregnancy:
Ask your doctor to show you how to lock your pelvis while walking, standing up, or other performing other activities which are painful for you. By being a little careful while doing your daily activities, you can ease the pain.
If the intensity of the pain is too high, your doctor will give you a pelvic support belt.
Specific exercises meant for the pelvic floor and tummy can be helpful too.
Aquanatal classes are also recommended, and involve exercising in water. This can provide relief to some extent. However, make sure that the class you join is conducted for pregnant women.
Acupuncture is also known to offer great relief. However, before you book an appointment, do make sure that the acupuncturist is experienced in treating PGP in pregnant women. If nothing of this helps, your doctor will most likely give painkillers like paracetamol.
Does PGP Affect My Labour?
Ideally, PGP should not affect your labour in any way. If you are apprehensive, here a few positions you can try:
Try sitting upright or try the kneeling position during delivery
Avoid lying down on your bed with your back at the time of your delivery
Enlist your doctor’s help to identify the correct positions to ensure that the delivery is less painful and easier for you.
Giving Birth With Pelvic Girdle Pain
Pelvic girdle pain can make it difficult for you to open your legs, and if you are facing this issue, talk to your doctor to know which will be the best position for you. You might even need an assisted birth if the pain is severe. If most of the positions are painful for you, your doctor will opt for epidural to make the entire process as comfortable as possible.
Your doctor will offer a caesarean section if you are in severe pain and movement is a problem for you. This is, however, the last option available. The Caesarean section does not really help with PGP symptoms. In fact, it can make it more difficult for you to recover from PGP after giving birth.
Help & Support
It is important that you have people around you when you are pregnant, and more so when you are experiencing pelvic girdle pain. You will need to rest more and you will also need to do less of the household chores. Having people to help you will make your journey easier.
If you are experiencing PGP, here are some of the things that you can do to ease the delivery process:
Avoid Painful Activities
Avoid all kinds of activities that increase the pain as it will usually take a very long time for the pain to settle down. Do not sit on the floor and avoid sitting cross-legged as well. Ask people around to help with the household chores.
While you may not feel the pain initially, it may start much later during the day or when you go to bed.
Ample Rest
Taking rest at regular intervals is important. Sight upright and make sure your back is arched and well-supported. Lying down on one side will help as well.
Proper Turns
Turning on the bed may become difficult with time. Try and sit up directly from lying down on your back. This will ease the pain to some extent. However, as the bump grows, this will become difficult to do. Before moving, tighten your lower tummy muscles, pelvic floor, and arch your back.
Walk With An Arched Back
Arch your back while walking and swing your arms. This helps in locking the pelvis in a stable position and makes the pelvic joints stiff.
Maintain A Correct Posture
Whether you are sitting or standing, make sure to maintain the right posture. Do not sit slumped or lie on your back with your legs at the same level. Whenever you have to lie down on your back, make sure that you have a rolled towel to support your back. You can also place a side pillow in between your legs and sleep sideways. In fact, this is something that you will find comfortable. This helps to keep your hips aligned.
Sleep On A Soft Mattress
Sleeping on a soft surface can offer temporary SPD pain relief. Just place a soft quilt or duvet below the bed sheet.
Some of the other things that you need to keep in mind are:
Do not lift heavy weights and objects
While wearing a pair of bottoms do not try and put your legs inside while standing. Sit down and then pull the clothing towards you
Do pelvic floor and lower abdominal exercises to strengthen your back
If you have experienced PGP in one pregnancy, chances are that you will experience it when you get pregnant again. However, it will not be as bad as the first time, as you already know what needs to done to reduce the symptoms. If you have suffered from PGP in one pregnancy, it is advisable to wait for a few years before the second one. If you are overweight, consider losing weight as excess weight puts pressure on your pelvis. Exercise regularly to increase your flexibility and to stay fit.
All these measures will help manage PGP efficiently and are sure to reduce your discomfort during delivery. Read more

We Asked 8 Mompreneurs How They Balance Work & Baby. Their Answers Will Win Your Heart!
“What! You are a working mom? You probably don’t get any time at all to spend with your child…Working mums cannot devote attention to their baby or important things at home; everyone knows it!” If you are a working mom, or have ever considered becoming one, chances are you must have come across this “fact”. In India, and even across the world, many hold the belief that working after motherhood isn’t a great idea. But is this a valid belief?
After motherhood, all of us face an important question – do you want to be a stay-at-home mom or a working mom? The question sometimes comes to us several years down the line, when we feel the need to find our footing and follow a long-forgotten passion. If you want to be a stay-at-home mom and devote all your energies to your child, that’s a beautiful choice in itself. But it is not a choice that can be – or should be – imposed on everyone. Becoming a mother does not mean you must give up your passions and dreams and quit the workplace for good. It is very much possible, albeit a bit difficult, to manage both work and family life.
We asked 8 mompreneurs – women who run successful business of their own – just how they manage to balance their work and family life. Do they manage to find time to spend with their child? HOW do they make this work? Their answers have left us totally amazed at the sheer willpower and strength that a woman and mother has within her.
If you too are considering starting a job or business, or planning to work from home, we recommend you MUST read their mantras. There is a lot we can learn from each other’s experiences!
1. Aditi Sharma, Kids On Board
Aditi graduated from one of the country’s top fashion colleges – NIFT – and worked in the fashion industry for some years. But somewhere down the line, she got bored and wanted to do something else. She had always been inspired by women in business – particularly, mothers – and working under two women bosses taught her a lot. This gave birth to her brainchild – Kids on Board, a youthful and vibrant kidswear brand dealing in casual and formal clothing.
Today, Aditi is a well-established mompreneur, who is boss by day and mommy all the time! While some days look more traditional – 9-to-5-ish – there are others where she flip-flops all day between work and personal responsibilities. But being a mompreneur has made her value her time much more. After all, every minute when she is working on something else is a minute that she chooses not to spend with her family and kids.
Her Mantra: “It’s NOT about balance; it’s a GIVE-AND-TAKE.”
Aditi says that achieving a true balance in a mathematical sense will likely drive you mad. There will be days when your business will require more time and attention. Conversely, there will be days when your personal life requires more time and attention. Try not to think of splitting your attention between the two evenly, but giving your attention to each as it is needed.
2. Pia Hingorani & Reet Kumar, Adores
When Pia embraced motherhood, she started seeing the world through a different lens – in a way only moms can. Her first thought was for her baby. But it was this thought that led her to entrepreneurship. She decided to pursue her dream and be her own boss so that she could do what was best for her child.
Pia and her fellow mommy Reeta now head Adores, a children clothing and accessories brand with over 20,000 customers! They love how their role also lets them design and dress their children as they please!
Her Mantra: “Prioritize and give importance to what you feel you would be HAPPY delivering.”
3. Komal Rajgariya, Lil Mantra
It was Komal’s niece and nephew who inspired her to create stylish clothing for kids. She wanted to create something that could not only let her unleash her creativity but also help her relive her childhood with new ideas and lessons. She started Lil Mantra – a fun clothing brand that provides cool and stylish kids wear in affordable range. Today, her customer base is more than 2,00,000 and counting!
Her Mantra: “Unconditional love and support from husband and family!”
Komal’s husband has been a strong support in standing by her through all ups and downs. He helped her in making things more organized and streamlined, while also helping her in managing home duties. Goes to prove just how important it is to have your partner's support when you try to follow your dreams!
4. Annu Babbar, Dress My Angel
When Annu and her sister Swati were little children, they loved designing their own clothes. Fashion was a means of self-expression. When Annu was blessed with a daughter, she realised how difficult it was to have dresses that are beautiful and comfortable at the same time. This was the inspiration behind ‘Dress My Angel’: motherhood, the unmatched joy of mothering a daughter, and reliving your childhood through your little one.
Today, Annu's day starts early at 5.30 am. She does not like missing her early morning walk – it’s like a morning tonic for her to live the adventure of the day. After she sees off her daughter to school at 7.30 am, her work time starts sharp from 9am till 4pm.These seven hours, her focus is just on work. After her daughter is back from school at 4 pm, she spends all her time with her and her family, unless something very urgent needs to be managed at work.
Her Mantra: “Prioritize the work for the day and divide the time for business and family. It’s very important to follow the time rules to bring balance between family and work.”
Annu explains, “When I am with my daughter I completely focus on spending time with her, as I would not like to miss her beautiful childhood. And when I am at work, I have all the required energy and time to nurture my business.”
5. Kanchan Vaidya, The Original Knit
In 2009, Kanchan became a new mother. Like every new mom, she too had a natural desire to dress her baby in cute and trendy outfits. During this time, she happened to visit her hometown in Himachal Pradesh. There, she saw the local women making small items of baby clothing using the techniques of crochet and knitting. This gave her the idea to start her own site where she sold products she knitted.
Slowly, more and more orders started coming in, and Kanchan started involving the ladies of her hometown! Today, several women from small places in UP, Himachal, Haryana and Delhi work upon the patterns designed by her, including knitted frocks, pants , caps, sweaters, shrugs, ponchos, hair-bands, bags, photo-shoot props…Eventually, she collaborated with FirstCry.com to reach more people, and get assistance from a strong support team for mompreneurs. Her brand is now one of the bestsellers!
Her Mantra: “It’s all about finding a profession your heart and mind wants to be involved with. If you are stuck in the wrong job, your time will be spent as a chore. Balance is achieved when you are happy about how you spend your hours; life is too short and hours too scarce not to follow your passion.”
6. Vani Chugh, D'chica
Vani Chugh heads D’Chica – a super stylish footwear, accessories and apparels brand for girls. Her own daughter Devyani was the inspiration behind this business idea. It was while shopping for her that she realized how much the market lacked. She wanted fashionable designs that matched international standards, and were yet affordable.
The first 2 years of business, Vani says, will be like the first 2 years of raising your baby. Delightful, yet draining, mind boggling and tough! You will experience things and situations no one can prepare you for. But we need to take then on with a smile, and keep telling ourselves that we are creating something truly great!
Vani also thinks that one of the biggest roadblocks for mothers who want to work is guilt – the guilt of not spending enough time with your family, or not devoting as enough time to your career. She advises, “Decide to focus on being happy, and start cutting yourselves some slack. You will feel better as mums and more satisfied in whichever career you choose!”
Her Mantra: “Know when to stop thinking about work. As an entrepreneur you are always on the job. The only way to balance is knowing when to switch off.”
Vani shared her schedule with us. Her day typically starts at 7:30. The first half hour goes in getting her daughter ready for school. Post breakfast, she spends an hour answering mails. She then hits the gym for an hour around 10, picks her daughter up from school and works straight from 12 to 6:30. She also tries to take her daughter out on most evenings. On particularly busy days, the laptop and her nanny accompany them to the park. Post 8:30, she tries to switch off from work completely.
7. Priyanka Sibal, Ps Peaches
Ps Peaches is into manufacturing, designing and marketing beautiful dresses for girls and boys. The idea was conceived by Priyanka and her fello mom Smita back in 2012. They realised that there was a big vacuum for formal dresses for little girls and boys. Also, as mothers, they were very particular about the comfort of the child and wanted something that would secure this.
The one thing Priyanka loves best about being a mompreneur is the respect and appreciation she gets from her children and family members. They really appreciate and acknowledge her hard work, and this makes everything worthwhile.
Her Mantra: “Have efficient staff both at business place and at home. This will help you spend quality (if not enough) time with your families.”
Priyanka feels that the lack of support at home is one of the biggest challenges faced by women who want to work or start a business. If the families are supportive then it becomes a great deal easier to follow your dreams.
8. Anjoo Sharma & Niki Sujanani, Dazzling Dolls
When Anjoo’s grand-daughter Devika was born, she realized how she absolutely loved gifting and spoiling her with all kinds of awesome products! It was this desire to shower her little granddaughter with gifts that first gave her the business idea.
Dazzling Dolls offers all sorts of clothing and accessories for babies. Anjoo’s daughter Niki and her husband provide a lot of support to her venture and help her keep it going strong.
Her Mantra: “Workout! If mental and physical health are good then everything else will be properly balanced.” Read more

Yes , i love you , my lil new born.
Mother emotions can never change.
People always said that becoming a Mother is one of most beautiful and joyous feelings in the world. However, what they forget to say is that the journey isn’t always as pleasant.
& so here I have a confession to make to you(my new born)
When your father and I realized we were going to be parents, our joy knew no bounds. The happiness and love we felt was something that I can’t describe. We felt that this feeling would last forever. But, that wasn’t the case.
The 9 month long journey was no cake walk - the daily morning sickness; not being able to eat; the tiredness and low endurance levels - all these health issues being amplified by the long and drab days of bed rest.
Finally the day came when I felt that this was all going to change. I would finally be able to see you, to hold you. I dint went into labour and had a C-section. I was under anaesthesia and couldn’t see you for hours after your birth; cudnt hold u for a day. And when I did, I couldn’t believe that the moment was right there, I was holding you in my arms. The moment that everyone spoke about so much.
Everyone came to see you from the family and seemed really happy. But I was in so much pain because of the surgery that I didn’t even want to hold you for long, nor was I able to sit or sleep or eat. Nobody had prepared me for this and again all the frustration of it started to build.
We got you home and soon I started feeling suffocated. My life was revolving around you and the four walls of the house with no sleep, no fresh air to breathe. A disconnect with you started to creep in and it made me feel guilty as I couldn’t help how I felt. My lifestyle had changed significantly and it seemed like the opposite of what everyone described the feeling of motherhood to be. One day blended into the next and everyday became a: Feed-Sleep-Change-Repeat.
Am I bad mother? Am I allowed to feel this way? Can someone hear my thoughts? What kind of mother am I, if I can’t even feel love for you? All these questions were popping in my head 24x7 and it started to eat me up.
I started to take some time out alone as all I wanted was to have my life back the way it was earlier. I’d go on walks or I’d spend some more time in the bathroom. Few days maybe weeks passed like this. But little did I know this time away made me start missing you. Your smell. Your soft skin. Your innocent eyes. Holding you. Cradling you. It made me worry about you. Were you alright? Were you sleeping? I slowly started feeling more of a responsibility and an attachment.
And one day while I was out for a walk and a gush of emotions took over me. All I could think about was holding you against me. Your were mine! God had given my body the ability to create you and you had turned out so perfect. The minute I reached home I looked at you and you were staring right back at me in a hope that was asking - “I came into this world connected to you. I trust you mom and that’s why I am here in front of you and you are doubting yourself?” with a precious little toothless grin.
I started to smile and cry at the same time. I felt like I wasn’t even living before I had you.
Finally I understood what people meant when they said parenthood is a crucible that not only changes you but also shows you what you're truly capable of. It requires a deep commitment and the willingness to keep going regardless of the circumstance.
And as the days went by, I started loving you more and more, deeper and deeper. Your sweet little smiles, you holding my finger and your tinie tiny yawns. You won my heart by just being you. Nothing seemed like a chore anymore. I looked forward to every new thing you did.
There’s nothing in this world that’s more important to me than you. You truly make my life seem more purposeful and make me want to be a better person everyday for you.
Yes, i really love you my girl.
We as mother must look forward to an exciting and fulfilling journey ahead with our lil born, n it will be the one that began with them holding our finger to us holding theirs. Read more

A. no need to worry about the frequency and colour of the stool if the consistency of the stool is semi solid to solid.
also there is no need to worry about the smell of the stool if the consistency is normal.
you have to meet the doctor if it is watery inconsistency or hard consistency otherwise semi solid to solid stool is normal.
also passing stool after taking food is normal. r
