Cryptic Pregnancy
Did you know that there are cases where a woman does not know she is pregnant until she goes into labour? While it may seem unbelievable, this condition is not as uncommon as you think. These women have very mild symptoms of pregnancy such as morning sickness, weight gain, or even missed periods.
What Is Cryptic Pregnancy?
A cryptic pregnancy or stealth pregnancy is termed such when the woman who is pregnant remains unaware of her pregnancy due to subtle pregnancy symptoms. Many of these women were told that they could not have children, or they would’ve themselves undergone sterilisation. In cryptic pregnancy cases, as the hCG levels are low, pregnancy goes undetected.
Causes of Cryptic Pregnancy
Below are some reasons why cryptic pregnancy may take place. Most of them are due to hormonal changes:
1. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
Small cysts on the ovaries can cause a hormonal imbalance in women. PCOS is on the rise due to changing lifestyles. This illness creates hormonal imbalances and irregular periods.
2. Recent Pregnancy
It’s possible for a woman to get pregnant after a pregnancy. In such a case, skipped periods might be mistaken for postpartum recovery. A woman may fail to realise that she’s pregnant again.
3. Perimenopause
Perimenopause is a condition wherein the female body exhibits symptoms of menopause, such as weight gain and hormonal fluctuations. When women fail to distinguish a pregnancy due to perimenopause symptoms, it results in a cryptic pregnancy.
4. Low Body Fat
For athletes or wome with low body fat, hormone levels may fluctuate, resulting in missed periods. This also makes it harder to detect a pregnancy.
5. Birth Control Pills
Those who use birth control pills and IUDs are usually confident of pregnancy not being a possibility. However, these contraceptive methods don’t guarantee a 100% success rate and can result in pregnancy.
6. Stress
As our lifestyles become increasingly fragile, we take on more stress to stay shoulder to shoulder with the world. Stress is one of the major factors of fluctuating hormone levels, especially in women.
Common Signs and Symptoms of Cryptic Pregnancy
Below are symptoms of cryptic pregnancy which women might fail to notice:
Period-like bleeding during the pregnancy that resembles a regular menstrual cycle
Typical pregnancy symptoms like nausea and vomiting are very mild and easily mistaken for other conditions
The foetus is present but nestles at the back of the uterus towards the spine
Though there is fetal movement in the uterus, it is very similar to the feeling of gas and indigestion.
Why is This Pregnancy Cryptic?
There are many reasons why your pregnancy may be cryptic. Some of the reasons are:
Urine and blood tests for pregnancy come back negative due to fluctuating hormone levels.
Early labour contractions feel like period cramping.
There is no sign of pregnancy on the ultrasound due to difficulty in detecting the foetus.
Is Fetal Developement Affected in Cryptic Pregnancy?
Since most cryptic pregnancies last longer than regular pregnancies, it’s commonly believed that the development of the foetus is affected in such cases. However, this is untrue. The development of the foetus takes place to the same extent, but at a slower pace.
Since the woman is unaware that she’s pregnant, she will not focus on pre-natal care. She may not cut down on smoking and alcohol, and this might inadvertently affect the foetus’ health.
Bleeding or Continued Periods During Cryptic Pregnancy
In cryptic pregnancy, a woman continues to bleed just as she does during a regular menstrual cycle. However, the duration of the bleeding is short. The bleeding occurs at regular intervals or is random. The flow also ranges from spotting to heavy flow and can be pink, red, black, brown or even purple. This occurs because the uterus is removing the inner lining and is not indicative of a miscarriage.
Weight Loss or Gain
Weight loss or gain in cryptic pregnancy is gradual. In case of weight gain, it does not follow a pattern similar to regular pregnancy and is very slow. Weight loss might occur due to food aversion that happens in the early pregnancy days. Since the mother does not know that she is pregnant, she does not ensure that she gets adequate nutrition both for herself and her baby.
Can Cryptic Pregnancy Go Undetected in an Ultrasound?
Many times, cryptic pregnancy goes undetected even in an ultrasound. One reason is that a woman who does not know she is pregnant will not get ultrasound tests as often as a pregnant woman will. Other reasons why an ultrasound will not detect a cryptic pregnancy are:
1. Retroversion of the Uterus
Retroversion of the uterus is a condition wherein the uterus tilts either sidewards or backwards. If the uterus is in this position, it’s hard for an ultrasound to detect a foetus.
2. Bicornuate Uterus
Bicornuate uterus is a congenital condition wherein the uterus grows in a heart shape with two horn-like tissues that are divided partially or fully by a wall of tissue. This makes it harder for the woman to conceive as well as increases the chances of cryptic pregnancy.
3. Scar Tissue
Scar tissue does not allow the ultrasound to get a clear picture as it blocks the waves of the test. Abnormal scarring may happen due to any stomach surgery or incomplete abortion in the past.
Why Do Urine and Blood Tests Show Negative Results?
In normal pregnancy, the result is determined on the amount of hCG in the body. hCG is a hormone produced by the placenta and builds up in the urine and blood. However, in case of cryptic pregnancy, the uterine lining is regularly removed from the body, thus not allowing hCG levels to build up. Hence, the urine and blood tests are negative in cryptic pregnancy.
How Long Can Cryptic Pregnancy Last?
The gestation period for cryptic pregnancy is much longer than that of regular pregnancy. As the hCG hormone is not absorbed by the body, it does not get the signal to focus on developing the foetus. Regular periods also prolong the gestation period. The heavier the flow, the longer the gestation period. Cryptic pregnancies may last from 40 weeks to two years.
Is Labour and Delivery After a Cryptic Pregnancy Similar to a Normal Pregnancy?
Once the baby is fully developed and ready to enter into the world, a woman undergoing a cryptic pregnancy feels severe cramps and her cervix dilates in order to push the baby out through the birth canal. Although labour in a cryptic pregnancy is similar to that of a normal pregnancy, it can cause psychological distress in addition to the physical as the woman may not be expecting it.
What Are the Symptoms of Labour in a Cryptic Pregnancy?
Some labour symptoms associated with cryptic pregnancy are:
Nausea
Vomiting
Chills
Dizziness
Body ache
Mood swings
Pain in the hips and pelvic region
Swelling of the vaginal walls due to increase in blood flow
Sharp, shooting pain in the breasts
Pressure on the cervix
How Can a Woman Not Suspect Pregnancy If She Misses Her Period?
There are many reasons why women miss their periods and don’t suspect pregnancy. These range from stress to PCOS to menopause. Also, the spotting or light flow in cryptic pregnancy can be mistaken for menstrual periods.
Complications
Some complications of cryptic pregnancy include:
No access to prenatal care as the mother is unaware of the pregnancy. Complications like hypertension and diabetes remain untreated and cause harm to both the mother and the baby.
When the mother does not avoid harmful substances like cigarettes or alcohol, it can cause harm to the foetus.
How to Prevent Cryptic Pregnancy?
If you are married and sexually active, then you must be aware that you could have cryptic pregnancy. If you experience pain or changes in your abdomen or pelvic region, then consult a doctor regarding the same. If you do not get your periods regularly, then inform your gynaecologist about this condition and get a thorough check-up.
Cryptic pregnancies are hard to detect and affect a woman’s life as she is unprepared. Being aware and keeping your gynaecologist in the loop about your reproductive health is the key to prevent cryptic pregnancy.

Common Diapering Myths You Need to Stop Believing in for Your Baby’s Sake
If there’s one thing that’s sure to be constant in a mom’s life, it’s the pouring in of advice from all corners. Once the baby is out, relatives, friends, and even random strangers cannot wait to give you their opinion on baby-related issues, right? Sure, a lot of it will be completely helpful and can make your life easier. But when there are 20 different - and we mean different! - tips coming in from every direction on a single topic, it’s bound to get you totally confused. Nutrition, sleep routines, potty-training - it’s all such a maze that you have to get around, trying to filter which advice makes sense and which needs to be ignored. And we’re sure one of your major areas of concern is going to be the big ‘D’ - diapering, of course!
Baby Diapering Myths You Need to Stop Believing
Diapering - do it right and you’ve got a happy, comfortable baby; do it wrong and you’re going to see angry red rashes on your little one’s bottom and will have to deal with his crankiness too! There are several pieces of advice that will come your way from experienced moms and well-wishers, but not all of it is completely accurate. These are a few you need to stop believing in.
1. Using Diapers Leads to Rashes.
Let’s get this common one out of the way, first and foremost! No, using a diaper alone is not the reason why a rash can appear on your baby’s bottom. Chemicals and moisture from your baby’s pee and poo can irritate his skin; add an ill-fitting and/or wet diaper to the equation and you can imagine what happens! Sometimes, even new foods introduced to the baby’s diet can lead to those red patches too. So no, diapers alone don’t cause a rash. The way you can avoid this, as much as possible, is to keep changing nappies frequently, and also by using a good diaper rash cream. Choose diapers made of soft materials, such as Huggies Diapers, which are also clinically proven to prevent diaper rash.
2. Larger-Sized Diapers Help Prevent Rashes.
Once again, this is purely a myth - diaper rash does occur when there’s friction between the baby’s skin and his wet diaper, but that doesn’t mean you should purchase sizes that will be too loose for him. Diapers should be like the clothes your baby wears - well-fitting and comfortable. If the diapers’ size is too large, you’re going to be in for a lot more leaks, messes, and slip-ups! In general, check whether the diaper fits around your baby’s leg snugly, without leaving telltale red marks. You can also check whether the diaper tabs close easily at your baby’s waist without a lot of tugging and pulling.
3. You Need to Wake your Baby in the Middle of the Night if He Has Wet His Diaper.
No, you don’t, not unless his diaper is extremely wet or filled with poo! While your baby’s diaper needs to be changed every 2-3 hours generally (resulting in close to 10-12 diapers per day), this rule can be relaxed a little while he’s sleeping. Put on a fresh diaper before his bedtime. However, as soon as your little one is awake, change his nappy, because the longer the acid content of the pee/poo stays in contact with his skin, the more trouble it might cause. And if you do need to change it during the night, make sure you finish the process quickly without interacting much with the baby, so that both of you can sleep off quickly. The need to change also depends on the type of diaper he’s wearing - if it’s very absorbent, he’s probably not going to wake up feeling uncomfortable. You could choose diapers like Huggies Wonder Pants, which will not only safeguard against pesky leaks from the sides but will also pull in wetness and keep your baby dry for close to 12 hours. No more sacrificing your or your baby’s precious sleep time!
4. You Should use Baby Powder on his Diaper Area While Changing His Nappy.
Again, you’re probably doing your baby more harm than good by using baby powder, especially on sensitive areas. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends against the use of baby powder at all, citing that it may cause lung damage if the particles are inhaled. While the idea behind using baby powder while changing diapers was to ensure dryness and prevent diaper rash, diapers today do that job effortlessly. For additional measure, using a diaper rash cream as a barrier between your baby’s skin and the diaper should also do the trick. Keep away from baby powder as much as possible for use on sensitive areas.
5. If There are No Leaks or Tangible Wetness, You Don’t Have to Change your Baby’s Diaper.
Just because the diaper is doing a great job of absorbing wetness doesn’t mean your child can walk around in the same one all day along! The longer your child wears a soiled or wet diaper, the more prone he will be to infections. Even if there is zero leakage or the diaper doesn’t feel too wet, it’s always best to change it every 2-3 hours. In between changes, let your baby’s bottom dry out for a while; give him some nappy-free time.
When it comes to your baby’s cute little bum, we know you want to stay clear of diaper rash or any inconvenient ‘messes’. If you’ve ever had doubts about whether these pieces of advice were myths or facts, well, now you know that along with dirty diapers, you have to dunk these myths in the bin too!

Date Syrup for Babies - Natural Sweetener for Infant Food
Babies develop an instant liking for any edible item that is sweet in nature. But using and giving them everyday sugar or jaggery may not be the healthiest way to satisfy their needs. New moms are generally advised to not give sugar to babies up until they turn a year old. But if you want to satisfy your baby's cravings for sugar, you can give him date syrup, this natural sweetener can be quite useful.
Benefits of Using Date Syrup for Infants
Date syrup is a natural sweetener that can be used in baby food but there is more to it. Dates have many advantages and health-related benefits, which find their way to the child through the date syrup. Find out how date syrup benefits a child:
The presence of fibre helps in reducing any presence of constipation faced by the baby, as well as help in stimulating the bowels naturally.
The nutrition present in dates is quite expansive. They are rich in Vitamin A as well as multiple minerals like magnesium, potassium, calcium, and iron, which help in reducing anaemic tendencies.
How Can Date Syrup Be Used?
Tasting a small portion of date syrup will make you aware of its delicious flavour. Using it intelligently with your kid can help in a multitude of ways. Since it is a safe and natural way to sweeten any food items for your child, you can use it in many preparations.
Adding date syrup to milk can enhance its taste. Some do believe that chances of iron absorption may reduce since adding date brings about a combination of calcium with iron directly. Therefore, you could get your doctor’s opinion before adding date syrup to your baby's milk.
If your little one has started eating portions of bread or roti, or dosas and pancakes, you can use the date syrup to coat them before feeding to your child.
While preparing any desserts for your little one or family, opt for date syrup instead of sugar or any other sweetener.
Even simple preparations such as purees or porridges that are cooked for the baby can make use of date syrup as a sweetening agent.
Homemade Date Syrup Recipe for Babies
Rather than purchasing date syrup from any marketplace, you can make it on your at home without any hassle. Here is a simple and quick recipe to make date syrup for your baby.
Ingredients
A cup of water
A cup full of dates
How to Make
Wash the dates and deseed them.
Once deseeded, chop them.
Put these chopped dates in a bowl and add boiling water to it.
Cover the bowl with a lid and leave it for a couple of hours so that the dates get soft and tender.
After the dates are soaked well, take them out and mash them.
Take another bowl and place a muslin cloth onto it tightly and pour the mashed dates into it squeezing well.
Add water to the squeezed pulp as required.
Put this in a pan and bring it to a boil. Let it continue boiling on medium flame until the solution starts thickening. Stir occasionally to avoid any chance of burning the base.
Once it starts getting thick and dark in colour, resembling honey, you can turn off the flame. Allow the solution to cool down. Get a glass jar and pour the date syrup into it, closing it tightly.
Preparation Time: Total preparation time to prepare the ingredients is no more than 10 minutes.
Total Cooking Time: The total time to prepare the final date syrup can range from half an hour to 40 minutes.
Serving Portion: This recipe can help you obtain around 50ml of syrup with ease.
Tips To Remember
Date syrup usually lasts for about a week. So prepare the amount accordingly.
Thickening continues even as the syrup cools. So take it off the flame at the right time.
Avoid using date syrup repeatedly with the child or he will develop a sweet tooth.
Using date syrup with milk for babies is a wonderful way of enhancing the flavour as well as providing them with good nutrition. But it is suggested that you use it in moderation and after consulting with your doctor.

Julia Name Meaning and Origin
Derived from the Latin Julianus, Julia is a feminine version of the male name Julian. It either comes from the Greek ioulos, meaning "downy-bearded," or from the Latin Iupiter or dyeus, meaning "shiny, sky" and pater "father." Julia also means "youthful," a derivative of the Latin word iuvenale. The French form of Julia is Julie, and the Italian form is Giulia. Still, today's modern variations come in the form of fanciful Julianna, the unisex Julian, and the trendier Jules. Julia is a biblical name found in Romans 16:15; she is the woman Paul sent greetings to. Julia is highly popular in the Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Belgium, France, Norway, and Sweden.
What Does Julia Mean?

This ancient Roman name was usually bestowed upon women born in the house of Julius, as in Caesar. Although Julia is the feminine form of the old Roman family name Julius of the God, Jupiter, from Roman mythology. A. Antibiotics may be necessary if you have an infection. Over-the-counter pain medications and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines relieve discomfort if the lump is painful or the area around it is swollen. Removing the lump may be necessary if it's due to lipomas, cysts or other skin issues.

A. Hello there ma’am please do not worry about it too much. Please take Shatavari powder with milk twice a day to increase breast milk supply. Also feed the baby often which also helps in increasing breast milk supply. Masaage your breasts gently before feeding the baby. You can also use breast pump to take out milk which also helps in production of breast milk.
Thanks and take care
