Tracking Toddler Development from 15 to 18 Months
Every day is a new developmental milestone for toddlers. You will realize that he is growing up every single day. The pace of development is different for every child. At 15 months your child can walk, climb, jump and explore on his own. Therefore, it is recommended that you should not leave your child unattended even for brief periods of time.
Physical Development
You need to check on your toddler’s physical development in terms of being able to stand on his own without support. He should be able to walk well around 18 months, if not it is advisable to seek medical help. You may notice your child trying to kick anything that comes in his way, and he will be very excited to do it. He should be able to do a little dance to music. By this time, your child also learns to hold a spoon or a fork. His favourite hobby can be scribbling on the wall; however you could provide him with a board to encourage his feat. Let your baby grasp a ball or a fruit, let him pick up small crumbs from the ground on his own. Teach him to build blocks and check his responses, you may notice that he loves playing with colourful blocks.
Language Development
Your child should be able to speak a little more than ‘Papa’ and ‘Dada’. You will see an increase in his vocabulary now. He should be able to use 5-6 words in everyday conversations. He should be able to understand a single instruction at a time. You will realize that now he associates the word ‘mom’ with you. A few toddlers can imitate and sing as well, and they can recognize their favourite songs.
Emotional Development
He will start feeling possessive of his toys now and may use words like ‘me’ or ‘mine’. The child may flare at any small thing because he is trying to adjust with the social norms. His confidence and self – esteem are growing because of which he is trying to be more independent each day. He might throw a fit at you, but do not react aggressively. You need to control your temper and refrain from yelling and spanking, even if you have repeatedly explained something
When to Seek Help
You may consult a doctor if your child:
Does not make eye contact with you or enjoy playing with you.
Does not speak anything till 15 months
Does not show hand movements like waving or twinkling
Has trouble seeing or hearing things
Does not walk by himself
Uses one hand much more than the other
Every time that you see your child reaching a milestone, make sure you appreciate him. Remember children learn by appreciating. Physical and emotional development at this age is very fast and you should be able to see changes in your baby as he grows. Only if you see your child not responding to your communication regularly, you may consult your medical practitioner. Some children can be slow during this time, but they will catch up very soon. 10 Rainy Day Books for Kids
It is tough to keep your kids indoors when the rains are finally here. But you can turn things around and get them to remain warm indoors. Make this monsoon interesting for them by getting them books about rain.
With monsoons being just around the corner, it’s a great idea to narrate rain-related stories to your children. It’ll help them know more about the season and even appreciate rain. Several books and short stories have been written on the subject and there’s no dearth of options.
Fun Books About Rain to Read
1. Rain School
This beautiful story by James Rumford is set in the country of Chad where the summer rains wash away a school year after year. The teachers and students then join hands to re-build it each year. Through this book Rumford wants to share how we take so many things for granted. He wants children to take a moment to be thankful for the schools that run even under heavy downpour.
2. The Puddle
In this rainy day book for kids, author David McPhail shares that it’s not just children, but animals too who love puddles. It’s a good way to get your children interested and maybe even fall in love with the rain. It’s a story about a little boy who seeks permission from his mother to row a boat in puddles of water. It’s fun to read how a frog, turtle, crocodile and pig also come out to enjoy the rain.
3. It’s Raining, It’s Pouring
Christine Davenier’s book depicts a heart-warming story through pictures. It’s a tale about an old man and a woman who enjoy a beautiful rainy day with their grandchildren. The kids are playing outdoors when the rain interrupts their game. They run inside and play hide and seek. One child sits with his grandfather and reads for him.
4. Peter Spier's Rain
Peter Spier’s Rain is a picture book that narrates the story of a brother and sister who visit different places in their neighbourhood to have fun on a rainy day. They splash through the rain puddles, check out their neighbourhood, and look at the animals taking shelter.
5. Who Likes Rain?
This book by Herbert Yee depicts the story of a little girl who tries to find out who enjoys the rain and who doesn’t. She stands near her window looking at the rain drops falling on a cherry tree. In no time, she’s seen outside trying to catch the raindrops in her hat, looking at animals and chasing her umbrella.
6. Come On, Rain
Written by Karen Hesse, this is one of the best rainy day kids’ books. It shows how people await the rainy season to get respite from the scorching heat of the city and enjoy it to the core when it finally arrives. The story is beautifully woven and is bound to rejuvenate you.
7. Are You Ready to Play Outside?
The book by Mo Willems shares how some people love the rainy season while others despise it. The story is about a bubbly pig, Piggie, and a pessimistic elephant, Gerald. As they get ready to play outside, it starts raining. At first Piggie doesn't want to play in the rain but when he sees the other animals having fun, he goes out with Gerald and enjoys himself thoroughly.
8. Let it Rain
This book by Maryann Cocca-Leffler celebrates the rain during spring through wonderfully illustrated pictures. Your children will enjoy the images of colourful flowers and light rain falling on them. It’s a delight to see the melting snow, blossoming flowers, and children playing outside gleefully as a light rain pours down.
9. The Umbrella
Authored by Jan Brett, this is another beautiful picture book. It illustrates the story of Carlos who goes in search of animals in the rainforest. He’s quite excited about his walk through the forest with his beautiful green umbrella and hopes to see various animals including tapir, kinkajou and monkey.
10. Dinosaur Thunder

Things I Wish I Knew When I Was Pregnant
Nothing really prepares you for the agonies and pleasures of being a parent. And by that, I mean no amount of books, videos or unsolicited advice can entirely prepare you for parenthood. While there are the obvious things like managing expenses and sleepless nights. I do wish I knew about some of the not so obvious and not often discussed matters of motherhood.
1. The Birth Plan
A birth plan is an outline of your preferences during labour and postnatal care; a concept common in the West. I have read mom blogs of mothers recounting how their birth experiences were in contrast to that documented.
While the concept of a birth plan is quite rare in India, today, women are increasingly choosing to communicate their wishes and goals to their doctors.
Though I did not document my birth plan, I had discussed with my doctor and partner about the possibilities and expectations of natural birth. Hence, I did not know what to expect when my doctor told me that I had to go in for an emergency C-section.
My pregnancy was free from complications until my 32-week scan when I was indicated of a low fluid level. I had not prepared myself for an operation, I did not know what to expect, I had not packed my bag or the baby's bag and I had a million unanswered questions.
2. Bonding With the Baby
When I was expecting, I recall a mother telling me how she held her baby for the first time and the feeling just changed her entire life and she bonded with her little one instantly.
My experience was quite in contrast to that. One, because I had stitches, I could not sit up and hold my daughter until the next day. Second, I did not bond with my daughter at once. It took me a lot of time and patience. I was tired, groggy and in so much pain that I just wanted to be left alone.
Looking back I wish someone would have told me that it was ok. Bonding with your baby can either happen to you instantly or over a period of time, and either of this is OK!
3. Feeding
During the last few months of my pregnancy, I was excited and looking forward to the experience of breastfeeding my baby.
I imagined it to be a cakewalk. My breastfeeding journey was filled with perils: an inverted nipple, a fast let down, cracked and bleeding nipples to name a few.
Experimenting with feeding positions, trying on nipple shields, tears from both ends, and one month later, we were pros at breastfeeding.
4. Blues
Mental health by itself is a taboo in our society, so God forbid a mother complains about her mental health. While I was aware of postpartum blues and depression I was not prepared for what I was to expect.
My postpartum blues hit me as soon as I gave birth. Early unexpected labour coupled with a preterm baby took a toll on my mental health.
I remember waking up with fits of sweat and imagining my baby had turned blue. I would constantly check if she was breathing. I wouldn't be able to close my eyes at night due to the fear that something bad was about to happen.
Luckily I had great support at home. My family made sure that I spoke about my fears and their reassurances helped me cope with this phase.
As the saying goes "Embrace the unexpected"; motherhood and being a parent is filled with unforeseen experiences. My daughter has taught me life lessons in the past 8 months that I haven't been able to gather in all the years before that. But I remind myself that it's ok to fail, it's ok to lose patience and it's ok to parent one day at a time. So, what are some of the things you wish you knew about when you were pregnant?

Types Of Water – Uses, Pros And Cons
One of the most important elements needed for human survival and sustenance, water is a resource found in different forms. It is important you know all about the types of water so you can segregate between what’s safe and what’s not. It is a key resource for survival, so drinking unsafe water can be detrimental to health.
Our bodies are also made of 70% water, so maintaining that balance is crucial. Most of this water ends up leaving our bodies in the form of sweat and urine, which is why you always need to remain hydrated. Drinking clean water allows your body to carry out various important functions, including aiding in digestion, fighting bacteria, carrying the various nutrients to and from the cells, maintaining the sodium balance and more.
Different Types Of Water
Water is generally distinguished based on consistency, treatment, composition and origin. There are so many different types of water, segregated according to consistency and quality. Here we presenting the most commonly used forms:
1. Tap Water
One of the most common forms of water is tap water. You can get tap water straight from your faucet and, depending on where you are, it may or may not be suitable to drink directly from.
While tap water is not safe for drinking in India, it can still be used for other purposes.
Advantages
Tap water can be used for household purposes and this includes cleaning, gardening, cooking and washing clothes amongst others. Local municipal bodies, however, have regulations where the quality of water must pass before being released for consumption.
Also, tap water is one of the cheapest and most easily available forms of water in the country.
Disadvantages
There are plenty of regulations which keep harmful substances out of water. These can include lead and disinfectants but sometimes, the regulations aren’t enough. This can lead to illnesses and other long-term effects on health. In some cases, there has been the presence of plastic particles in tap water sources across the world.
Public water from the municipality can contain residues of pesticides and aluminium, making it harmful to consume. If you’re planning to use tap water for cooking purposes, then it is always advised to check with your water supplier regarding any safety concerns you might have. It is also advised to get your own water purification system if possible, to ensure that your water is cleansed entirely before you use it to clean food.
2. Mineral Water
Mineral water is another popular form of water that is consumed by people all over the world. This is considered a safe option for consumption as the water is put through different purification methods before it is finally given to the public to consume.
Advantages
The biggest advantage of mineral water is that it comes packed with essential nutrients and minerals that keep your body healthy and fighting fit. These nutrients can include the likes of calcium, magnesium, sulphur and more, which are essential for the day-to-day functioning of the body’s various systems.
Another advantage of mineral water is that is provides your body with the necessary resources with which you’ll be able to keep fit. The added minerals play a role in aiding digestion, allowing you to break down your food much better. A lot of people also prefer the taste of mineral water as it has a small tinge of sweetness to it. It is one of the best types of drinking water available.
Disadvantages
One of the main drawbacks of mineral water is the fact that it costs much more than normal tap water. Tap water is available for free in many households. Also, if you do maintain a balanced and controlled diet, you will be able to get the necessary nutrients that your body requires.
3. Glacier Or Springs
Spring or glacier water is another one among the unique varieties of water available all across the world. It is also considered the purest form of water. Some manufacturers even claim that their water is bottled right at the source. In India, this source is in the form of a glacier or spring and they are found mainly in the northern part of the country – especially the Himalayas.
Advantages
Glacier water is considered to be a pure form of water as it is collected right at the source. This water type is believed to be free of toxins as well as being relatively clean. It also contains the necessary minerals that your body requires, sometimes more than that of mineral water.
Spring water is also easily available in stores across the world, with well-known brands such as Arrowhead and Evian providing water in both small and large quantities, making them easily accessible for those who want to upgrade.
Disadvantages
Price is a major concern for spring or glacier water when compared to tap water and mineral water. It is also important that you check if the source of water is dependable. Some knockoff brands post health risks by adding harmful contaminants within the water.
4. Sparkling Water
Sparkling water is also referred to as soda water or carbonated water as it is made by infusing water with CO2 gas under pressure.
Advantages
Sparkling water tastes completely different from normal water, by giving you a fizzy taste, which is great to have on a hot day. If you dislike artificial sweeteners used in soft drinks, then sparkling water is the best alternative to consume.
You can also find flavoured sparkling water that can be purchased. Most of them throw in health-promoting minerals as well.
Disadvantages
While the minerals present in sparkling water are good, they aren’t enough to satisfy your required input. They are also expensive compared to packaged drinking water, so it is better to have it occasionally.
5. Distilled Water
Distilled water is formed by evaporating normal water and then condensing it back from steam to the liquid state. Most of the compounds in the water tend to dissipate into the air when they are boiled, leaving behind a residue of water that is devoid of any additives.
Advantages
Distilled water is generally used in automobiles to cool engines down as it does not have any added compounds within them. They are also used to top off lead-acid batteries found in trucks and other vehicles.
Disadvantages
Since distilled water does not have any minerals added to it, it does not have any health benefits. It can also be harmful to the body and pulls minerals from wherever it can.
6. Purified Water
Purified water is one of the types of groundwater as this is generally extracted and treated to ensure that it is safe for consumption. The process to make purified water kills off substances such as parasites, fungi and bacteria.
Advantages
Purified water is a great option if any immediate water source tends to be contaminated. There are many countries across the world, which generally purify tap water, making it safe for direct consumption.
Disadvantages
As harmful substances are removed from the water, one of the substances added to aid the process is fluoride. While okay in small quantities, excess of fluoride can cause issues such as tooth decay within the body.
Purchasing purified water or installing systems at home can also be expensive.
7. Alkaline Water
Generally, alkaline water tends to have a higher level of pH compared to tap water and contains negative oxidation reduction potential (ORP) and alkaline minerals.
Advantages
Alkaline water is believed to neutralize the acid within the body and helps slow the ageing process, though this hasn’t been proven yet.
Disadvantage
Drinking alkaline water is safe as it can reduce stomach acidity and kills off any harmful bacteria. However, when consumed in excess, it can cause vomiting and nausea.
8. Well Water
Well water is taken straight from the ground and is a common source of water in many rural areas in the country.
Advantages
Having your own source of fresh water is always a great option and can help you access it whenever you need it.
Disadvantages
As well water comes from the ground, it can mix with bacteria and be harmful to consume directly. If it isn’t put through any purifying methods, it can cause difficulties for your health.
Water comes in many different forms. It is important that you choose a source that is not just safe for consumption but is also suitable for the various activities you have planned.

5 Ways Your Fellow Mommy Loves to Compete
Have you come across competitive mothers who stress you out with their irritating games? Dealing with such moms doesn't have to be a daunting task if you only learn to spot them beforehand!
Are you tired of hearing questions like “Doesn't she do this yet?” or “Why don’t you do it this way?” You probably know a competitive mommy who makes you flinch at the thought of a get-together. Her children are the "best" and she’s the "best" mom. Fret not. Find yourself the "best" way to deal with such moms and put them in their place!
Effective Ways to Spot a Competitive Mother
1. She’s Very Nosy
“How long does she sleep?”, “Is she potty trained?”, “Does she eat well?” and many more queries like these are free giveaways whenever you meet. Competitive mommies are always ready with questionnaires. They do this for two reasons—first, because of their over-anxious nature, and second, because they probably know the answers but want to narrate their own success stories of bringing up children.
2. The One-Upmanship
Did you recently arrange a birthday party for your little one? Well, a mom who’s over competitive will tell you (whether you want to listen or not) what a grand party she organised for her child. Although it’s foolish to give ear to such talk, you may get trapped into the “Who’s the better mother” game. After spotting a competitive mom, don’t get dismayed feeling that you aren’t doing the job right. Trust yourself.
3. She Can’t Help But Question You
Although not harmful, she may prove to be irritating when she starts asking too many questions that aren’t really her business. Dealing with a competitive mother who nurtures deep doubts about her kid’s well-being, while wanting to know more about yours, will throw you off gear very soon. Try to understand why she’s behaving the way she is. Maybe she’s insecure and secretly wants pointers. Or maybe she seeks approval from others.
4. She’s The Mommy Police
“Hasn’t she started talking yet? I think you should mention this to her doctor.” “Why hasn’t she begun walking? My daughter started at only a year.” You’ve realised by now that all your children’s actions are being keenly observed and you get feedback on your parenting skills. Be careful of a competitive mother who seeks the opportunity to sympathise if your child is late to master a skill. She’s not worth your attention and just wants to brag about her mommy skills!
5. She’s The Bad-Eyed One
There are mommies who compare your children with theirs and then put yours down. Let’s be honest; not all moms are considerate about others! Some make particular effort to get in the way of another child just to make theirs ‘win’. It’s best to keep women like these out of your life. They’ll only try to drag you down.
It’s important to prevent competitive mommies from involving themselves in your decisions as a parent and making you feel low about your children. Take charge by gauging such moms from far away and steering clear of them. You’ll be happier and so will your kids! Read more

A. It is not a pre-term degree once you enter into your nine months you can deliver any time and it will be a full-time delivery so see if your gynaecologist is suggesting you something go for that because she’s monitored your pregnancy throughout these nine months so I think she would not suggest you anything wrong of going a sec for a second opinion you go for what your gynaecologist suggesting but try going ahead with a normal delivery
