Falling During Pregnancy – How to Take Care of Yourself and Your Baby
When pregnant, every motion and movement can be cause for a pregnant mommy to worry. This is because we believe that the foetus and our bodies are much weaker than they actually are. For your baby to be harmed by a fall, it would first need to hurt you significantly. A small slip or bump against something doesn’t harm your child in the slightest.
Misconceptions About Falling While Pregnant
Falling can always seem scarier than it is. Here are some misconceptions about what a fall can do to you while pregnant.
Every fall can harm your baby’s mental development.
Your baby having a mental or learning disability can have numerous causes. No significant research points to a direct link between falling when pregnant and the development of any mental or emotional disabilities These conditions have a higher chance of being hereditary.
Any fall can kill a baby.
Similar to the development of your child, if the impact of the fall is minor, it won’t hurt your baby. Even with major falls, it takes an immense amount of trauma to cause a fatality.
Falling during pregnancy hinders natural delivery.
Unless the trauma caused by the fall is severe or intense enough to impact the baby’s position or physical structure, doctors won’t recommend a C-Section.
You need to worry only if you fall on your tummy.
Regardless of the position of your fall, the most significant factor you need to be on the lookout for is the impact strength of the fall. Falling on your tummy increases the risk of danger to the baby, but falling on your head or even falling on your buttocks while pregnant can impact the baby just as easily if the impact is strong enough.
Note: It is essential to monitor yourself after a fall, as you’re the best judge of your own body. If something feels unnatural, please contact your closest hospital immediately. Some falls can seem minor, but are, in fact, extremely serious.
Reasons for Falling Down in Pregnancy
There are numerous reasons you may experience a fall when you’re pregnant. Some of these are:
1. Shift in the Centre of Gravity
A shift in your centre of gravity is one of the leading causes for a fall when pregnant. This could be a result of a sudden imbalance created in your muscles due to rapid weight gain during the second and third trimesters. Pre-natal yoga and other exercises can help prepare your muscles for this shift in gravity. Talk to your doctor about what exercises are safe for you and which types of exercise can help you avoid a fall due to this reason.
2. Pregnancy Hormones
Pregnancy causes hormonal imbalances. Some of these hormones relax your joints and ligaments, which act as a form of support to the cervix during the pregnancy period. These joints stretch and relax, allowing the body to redistribute the weight around the pelvic region so your baby’s growth isn’t hindered and your joints don’t get damaged. This can cause the joints to relax too much, leading to a fall.
3. Inflammation
One of the most common side-effects of pregnancy, inflammation is considered a leading cause of falls during the second and third trimester. Pregnancy hormones can cause swelling throughout your body, particularly in your feet. This can lead to pain and a loss of balance, leading to a collapse.
4. Imbalanced Body Weight
When pregnant, your body rapidly gains weight, most of which is centred around the belly. This creates an imbalance in your body posture and weight distribution, and can lead to a fall. The imbalance in body weight strains certain muscles more than others which is why the overworked muscles tend to have a lot more fatigue and can crumble due to lack of support.
5. Low Blood Pressure And Sugar
A common condition when pregnant, fluctuations in blood sugar and blood pressure due to a weakened immune system and imbalance in hormones can cause severe dizziness and falls.
Can Slipping Harm the Baby?
The movement of the foetus is extremely well protected by numerous different layers that act by constricting movement, while also cushioning your child. Slipping isn’t considered dangerous unless the fall has the following signs of danger:
The fall results in bleeding in any portion near the abdominal or vaginal region
The fall results in excruciating pain
The fall leads to a leak in amniotic fluid
Foetal movements drop after the fall
If these signs are present immediately after a slip, please contact your primary care physician immediately.
Testing for Injury Due to Falling
In case you have suffered a significant fall that has indications of trauma, doctors may ask you to complete the following tests:
An X-ray to check for broken bones
An ultrasound to monitor the heartbeat of your child and check its position
Blood tests to verify both the mother’s and baby’s health
A routine urine sample to ensure pregnancy health
In some cases, you may be asked to spend a night at the hospital for observation, as symptoms that are delayed may manifest later.
Impact of Falling During Pregnancy
Here are a few factors to keep in mind when evaluating the severity of your fall and its possible repercussions.
1. The Position
It is important to remember that the issues that may arise when a pregnant woman falls on her stomach are different from if she falls on her knees while pregnant. Consult your doctor if the pain becomes too severe or other symptoms begin to manifest. Remember that you are at most risk if you fall flat on your tummy. While falling on your back or knees may hurt, the risk to your child is minimal, as long as the fall isn’t extreme.
2. The Mother’s Age
According to most doctors, women above the age of 35 who are pregnant have a higher chance of complications due to a fall. If you meet this criteria, we recommend you consult your medical consultant regardless of the manifestation of symptoms, for safety purposes.
3. The Surface
The surface you fall upon can have a major impact on how high the risk of complications is. If the surface is hard, the risk of your baby being hurt goes up. Falling on a hard surface doesn’t guarantee that your baby will be hurt.
Complications of Falling During Pregnancy
The complications of a fall increase or decrease, depending on how far along in the pregnancy you are when the fall takes place.
In First Trimester
During the first trimester of your pregnancy, the risk to your child is minimal. This is primarily because the fetus isn’t developed yet and is protected by a thick layer of the placenta. This, in combination with protection from the pelvic bone, ensures a lower risk to the child. If you have a major fall, lay down and rest. If you feel uncomfortable or are afraid of the impact of the fall, consult your physician.
In Second Trimester
The risk of danger is slightly higher in the second term of pregnancy. The uterus is not tucked into the pelvic region and is more exposed to the surface. This, however, doesn’t stop any of the other protective shields from functioning normally. The risk in this trimester is moderate, and medical advice should be sought if you experience any of the following symptoms:
Tenderness of the abdomen or uterus
The presence of blood or spotting
Dizziness
Breathlessness
Unbearable pain
The movement of the foetus is lowered significantly
Contractions in the uterus
In Third Trimester
The risk of danger to the foetus is substantially higher in the third semester. The foetus is fully developed and upside down, where the head is closer to the vagina. The chances of the placenta that protects the baby being pulled off the uterine wall are much higher, which can increase the risk of severe damage to the baby. It is also recommended that you keep an eye out for leakage of amniotic fluid, which could be a sign of premature labour.
Precautions You Can Take to Prevent Accidents
Here are a few tips to help you avoid accidents during your pregnancy:
When possible, use guardrails to support you while walking
Ask for help and lean on your partner or friends and family
Take breaks between activities and ensure you rest adequately to combat fatigue
Soak your feet in warm water and rock salt to help alleviate muscular stress and combat inflammation
Use anti-skid tape in bathrooms and other areas with wet flooring
Avoid carrying heavy objects
Stay attentive when walking
Avoid stairs as much as possible
Ask your partner to massage your feet to help relax muscles
Get help, delegate the work that needs to be done, and don’t exert yourself
Ensure you keep an eye on your blood sugar and blood pressure. Rest when it is low and munch on something to get it back up, before walking
It is important to remember that the risk of falling increases as you are further along in the pregnancy. Talk to your doctor about the signs you need to watch out for and how to avoid the risk of falling. Ensure you get adequate rest and rely on your loved ones when you cannot manage things by yourself. In case of a fall, consult your primary care physician, immediately. Ensure that you consult a doctor in the third trimester, even if there are no symptoms, as the risk of complications is much higher during this period.

Tackling Persistent Sleeping Problems in Babies
Persistent sleep problems can take a toll on the baby's health. It is therefore important for parents to spot the symptoms of any sleep related issue at the earliest and take necessary actions accordingly.
The most challenging aspect that new parents face is to make their baby sleep through the night. Newborn babies have a tendency of waking up at night on a regular basis. This is very common and healthy too as most babies will need their parents at night to feed them and assist them in settling down, for the first six months. However, it is vital for the parents to develop a sleep pattern for the baby as he grows older. For babies who are not able to sleep properly at night, there can be some severe effects on their health.
Methods to Reduce Baby's Sleep Problems
1. Controlled Comforting
Controlled comforting means putting your baby to bed when he is sleepy, but waking him up on time and also leaving him alone for short spans of time, even if he cries. This technique includes spending short spans of time to settle your baby. Put him in his cot and then let him self-settle. To start with, you can leave your baby for two minutes and wait for him to settle down. Even if he hasn’t scettled, go back again and comfort him, but do not take him out of the cot. Once he settles, leave the room for 5 more minutes. Repeat the pattern and increase the time when you both get used to it. It could take about a fortnight for this technique to work. If you have tried it for over two week, and there are no significant results, it is unlikely to work and you should look for other alternatives.
2. Camping Out
Camping out has been proved to be effective with infants. It involves sitting next to your baby as you see him settle-up. But do not remove your baby from the cot. You can start with stroking or patting your child till he falls asleep. After several nights, you can simply sit beside without physical touch. Once your child is used to this, you can move your seat a foot away and gradually move to the doorway and out of the room.
3. Systematic Ignoring
This is similar to controlled comforting but needs a tougher approach. This involves putting your child to bed so that he settles down on his own. If your child cries, you can go inside to change his nappy or to check if he is sick, but you mustn't soothe or interact with him. Once done, leave the room but do not return till your baby stops crying. This method may sound harsh, but this is for the babies who cry because they want the parent’s attention all the time, which can be tiresome and inconvenient for the parents.
4. Waking up on Time
This is important for children, who have persistent night terrors and also those who wake up in the middle of the night. Wake your child up an hour before he is likely to wake up, re-settle and put him to bed again.
Some Common Ways to Deal with Baby’s Sleep Problems
Although babies face a lot of issues in dealing with sleep problems, parents can try the following techniques to tackle with them:
The baby should be exposed to day time activities and the day light. He should be a part in the day’s hustle-bustle
As the bed time of the baby approaches, switch from energizing activities to little sleepy and passive activities. Start reading bed time stories and lullabies to the baby and keep the lights dim.
Give the baby a bath before it is time for him to sleep. This will help calm him down to some extent.
The baby should be fed well before sleep. This way, they sleep for long stretches with their tummies full.
We can't approach baby problems, in the same way, as we tackle sleep issues with older children and adults. The above said methods are safe and will give good results. So try them out and let your little enjoy a sound sleep and good health. Read more

A lesson life taught about the occurrence is worth sharing.....
.
We had been recently transferred to this place. This new place was a small town. The pride of the town is a hill owning a height of around five hundred feet. The hill crowns a fort on its top which is a kind of tourist spot. Even so, being at a distance from the city the town had a lifestyle of a village.
We moved to the new but rented apartment. The flat was constructed in such a way that the view from the hall, kitchen, and one of the bedrooms was this majestic hill which at the few first views was very captivating. There was no obstruction for the view, air, and sunlight as most dwelling places were individual houses. Even so, being previously attached to the city-style life, I was finding it arduous to get acquainted with this new way of living. Every day I would look at the hill. People would be climbing it. sometimes I find some goats being up there. But I never find the hill being standing alone or being deprived of any company. I always wondered how much time it might be taking people to reach the fort. But I have no memory of my strong inclination to climb it.
As mother nature changes her look, the hill would robe itself accordingly. I would watch it on full moon nights when the moon would rise behind the fort. In the time of sunset, the crimson red sky behind the hill would be picturesque. On rainy days the white cloud-covered hill would be enough to bring the feeling of any hill station vacation. In winter the fog would cover it like a aureole. Gradually I had constant nascent thoughts about how everything might be looking from such a great height. Would the moon look a little bigger or how the queen would be experiencing up there in all seasons. I would often say that I wanted to be there at the top but I never really could believe that actually, I would be there someday. I had my restrictions. My daughter was three years old and was completely dependent on me. we would have our parents with us but only for some time as we were far from our native place.
So one day I planned to get a closer look at the hill. It was just one kilometre away from my home. I've always had its view from outside. We reached there. having some heritage values, the hill is being taken care of by the govt. Reaching there I came to know that the visiting time was over. So we could not get tickets for ourselves but the guard allowed us to be there at the foot of the hill. It was really enjoyable. The area was quite large. There were stairs for going up. my daughter urged me to go up but I convinced her we would come next time because that day's time for the visit was over. She understood and we returned from there.
Next Sunday we again reached there but a little early. I always get water bottle and snacks for my daughter but never got prepared for ourselves because in my wildest dreams I never believed that we were going to climb up there. This time we got tickets and we started climbing stairs. My daughter with her father was climbing ahead of me. she was so excited that she would not look back.
“Let's go. We have climbed enough.” I said.
“No, mama. Let's climb.” She would reply.
Her father would suggest going a little up and then to return. I was getting it difficult to breathe under the mask. So occasionally they would remove it but the father-daughter duo not for a second would remove the mask. This way all of us climbed up to three fourth of the height. At this height, the hill had a large plain surface where one can rest for some time. The breeze was cool and the view of the city from the top was impressive. There was a lotus pond in the way where the road lies ahead for the fort. We took a rest there. my daughter had some snacks and water there. there was no source of any food or beverage up there. also, the number of visitors was very few. My daughter was the youngest visitor among all. Still, she was insisting to go up there. Her father was a little hesitant considering she was too young to climb such a height. But ultimately he agreed. He decided to carry her and march ahead. The fort was not very far. It was closer than the distance we had already covered. But the road was steep. Somehow we managed to reach there. It was dusk and the sun was in preparation to leave. When we reached there, we felt it was very worth coming. At the same time, we also realized that it was our daughter for which we were at the top. The reason I was considering a limitation was the reason behind liberation.
Life always works mysteriously. Sometimes when we least expect something, things happen. The mechanism of the universe is beyond human imagination. All I did was cultivate a desire and wish it to happen. The rest was taken care of.
