Is Taking Triphala Safe during Pregnancy & Breastfeeding?

What is Triphala and What Are Its Health Benefits?
Triphala is an Ayurvedic medicine which has been used since ancient times and is said to have multiple health benefits from curing dental cavities to stomach ailments. It translates to ‘three fruits’, and like its name, it is made up of a mixture of dried fruits of three different plants, namely, Amla (Indian Gooseberry), Bibhitaki, and Haritaki. It is used to prevent many diseases and to treat the symptoms of inflammation and constipation. It’s possible health benefits include:
Cleanses the colon.
Filters and purifies the blood.
Eliminates toxins present in the liver.
Helps fight infections as it has high Vitamin C content.
It has anti-inflammatory properties.
It aids in weight loss.
It is believed to be beneficial to cancer patients.
Can You Take Triphala While Pregnant?
The answer is 'no'. Triphala is not advisable for pregnant women. The reason is that it can increase the risk of miscarriage due to having a ‘downward flow’ movement. It is not even recommended for breastfeeding mothers. Amla, which is one of the constituents of Triphala, is recommended for lactation in new mothers but the other two, bibhitaki, and haritaki are dangerous. So it is better to take amla in a separate form during pregnancy if you really want to keep your antioxidant levels high.
Risks of Taking Triphala During Pregnancy
There are several possible risks of taking Triphala during pregnancy:
Taking Triphala during pregnancy may cause diarrhoea and abdominal pain which can pose problems in pregnancy.
It can increase the risk of miscarriage during pregnancy due to its downward pushing movement.
It can also lead to a miscarriage due to stimulating muscle contractions in the uterus.
If taken with blood thinning medications, it may affect their effectiveness.
Taking Triphala churna during pregnancy can cause allergic reactions like swelling in the mouth or throat, skin itchiness and redness, and breath shortness.
It can cause a healing crisis with symptoms such as nausea, headache, tiredness, and stomach upset.
It can increase your baby’s heartbeat which is potentially harmful.
Can You Take Triphala While Breastfeeding?
Breastfeeding mothers should not consume Triphala as the properties of this herb may pass on to the baby via breast milk. If you still want to take Triphala churna during breastfeeding, make sure to consult your obstetrician to know the extent of the risks and benefits.
Triphala has many benefits. It is a herbal remedy to cure many ailments, including preventing inflammation and as a treatment for constipation and dental issues like gum inflammation plaque buildup. But it is highly unsuitable and dangerous to take during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If consumed during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, it may pose risk to your as well as your baby's health. So, it is best avoided.

Why Is International Workers' Day Celebrated?

Dedicated to the working class, this day is also observed to raise awareness about issues like forced labour, minimum wage law, rights of migrant workers, etc. This Day is celebrated to encourage international labour associations. Moreover, labour unions and labour groups use Labour Day to fight for the rights of workers. Although a lot of us (especially the working class) are not aware of the significance of May Day, we benefit from it. It is because of the strike by labours in Chicago in the year 1886 (demanding for 8-hour working days) that we are working for eight hours. The 8-hour work day rule was established in many countries including India. May 1st is recognised as a public holiday across many countries. In the United States and Canada, Labour Day is observed and celebrated on the first Monday of September.
History of International Workers' Day
In the 19th century, when Industrialisation was at its peak, labours worked relentlessly to meet the demands of the public. At that time, the working hours were as long as 10-16 hours a day. And the working conditions were not safe for the labourers. Due to which a number of workers faced difficulties and some even died because of the unsafe working conditions and long working hours. To stop this and provide justice to the labour class, several movements took place in the late 19th century.
'The eight-hour day movement' was one such movement. This movement was initiated to set a specific time for work. Started in Britain in the early 19th century, the movement quickly gained popularity in other countries as well. The United States saw the first protest by the carpenters of Philadelphia who went on a strike demanding a ten-hour day. This demand became widespread in the 1830s. And in the year 1864, the eight-hour day quickly became a major demand of the Chicago labour movement. Following the previous attempts to bring the eight-hour day into effect, on 1st May 1886, a general strike took place in Chicago where thousands of people came together to support the movement. In the following days, more people joined the movement. On May 4th, when the police tried to disperse the crowd, it resulted in violence. A lot of people were injured and many people died. In 1889, a meeting was held in Paris by the Second International, an organisation of socialist and labour parties, that called for demonstrations worldwide to remember the Chicago protests. In the year 1891, May Day was officially recognised by the International Second Congress to be celebrated as an annual day.

The celebration took place at two places, one at a beach opposite to Madras High court and the other at the Triplicane beach. In the meetings at these two places, he explained the significance of his party and the labour movement in general.

How to Stop Bribing Children
When your little angel turns into a little devil by screaming, crying, and throwing tantrums, all you wish for is some peace. At times like this, maybe, your first thought is to bribe your baby. “Stop screaming, and I will give you another scoop of your favourite cookie dough ice cream!”. There, you’ve done it again. You’ve bribed your baby into good behaviour by offering a generous scoop of your child’s favourite ice cream.
A lot of parents do this. You may think it is a harmless thing to do, but it is not. When you bribe your child, you let him or her have it her way, and this is not the best parenting approach. Bribing is a dishonest means of persuasion, where there is a trade-off that works in favour of both parties. In this case, it is you and your child. If you continue this habit, tomorrow, it will be your child and another person, where bribing isn’t just a harmless approach anymore.
Why Do You need to Stop Bribing Your Child?
Now that we’ve established that bribing is wrong let’s get into the reasons as to why you need to stop bribing your child.
Firstly, when you bribe your child, you do so because you expect him or her to behave in the right manner. Behaving the right way does not require incentives - it is just the way you are supposed to be. When you tell your child that he will get chocolate if he is a good boy, then he will begin to think that he is entitled to receiving chocolate just because he was good. This is simply not the case. Being good is a responsibility, it is the right behaviour.
Secondly, childhood is the foundation stone for the rest of the child’s life. If you bribe him as a child, he will be corrupt when he is an adult. You do not want your child expecting bribes when he grows up, or worse still, bribing his way through life. Your child has to know that he will not always get rewards for what he does.
Thirdly, when you reward a child for good behaviour, he will end up doing less of it. Let’s take this example - you tell your child that if he eats the vegetables on his plate, you will read his favourite book before his bedtime. Research suggests that when you attach a ‘reward’ or bribe to a specific behaviour, your child labels this behaviour as unpleasant. In the long run, in the absence of a bribe, your child simply won’t practice this behaviour.
Ways to Stop Bribing Kids
Getting into a bribing trade-off is extremely easy, but reversing this habit is anything but easy. We will now dive in deeper into the many ways that you can stop bribing your kids -
1. A No is a No
Sometimes, you need to be firm without being mean or unkind. You need to tell your child that he is in the wrong and that some kinds of behaviour are unacceptable.
2. Let Your Child Figure it Out
Let’s say your child wants to wear a sleeveless top to her friend’s birthday party. You don’t want her to wear that, because it’s a cold winter night. Don’t bribe her. Instead, tell her to wear the dress, and then go out on the porch for two minutes. Let her see for herself that it is cold outside. This way, you’ll get your child to listen to you, and your child will realise that it was her decision and she wasn’t being forced.
3. Stop and Assess
Sometimes, there might be an underlying reason as to why your child is throwing a tantrum. If your child is screaming and crying all the way to school, on every single day, maybe it isn’t just another fit of a tantrum. You might want to look deeper. For instance, your child may be getting bullied.
4. Ask Your Child
Present the situation to your child, but with different characters. For example, take her favourite teddy bear. Ask your child if she would like it if her teddy bear threw a tantrum or didn't follow orders. Will she like it? This way, you'll be telling your child how you feel, by making her exercise empathy.
5. Sometimes, You have to Ignore
This might be a hard approach, but if your child is throwing a tantrum for no reason, then ignoring the child will let your child know that his tantrums are futile, and nothing is going to change with bad behaviour.
Children look up to their parents. Everything you say or do, in their world, is law. You need to teach the right ideas, patterns, and ways of thinking if you want your little one to grow up into a smart individual. Parenting is not easy, and no one gets it right all the time. Inhale slowly as you lift your legs from the ground and form a 45-60 degree angle. Hold for 15-20 seconds and exhale, bringing your legs down slowly. Repeat this three-four times and increase the reps gradually. Uttanpadasana is best done early in the morning.
3. Ardha Pawanmuktasana
Lie down with your back flat against the floor and place both hands below your right knee to help your leg touch the right side of your ribcage. Press hard against your ribcage while keeping your left leg on the floor. Hold it there for a minute and slowly bring it back to the floor. Repeat with the other leg. This 'half gas release pose' is a yoga asana for digestion that frees your system from trapped gases and stimulates bowel movement.
4. Kapalbhati Pranayama
Sit on the floor with legs folded and spine straight. Place your left palm on your left knee and your right palm on your right knee. Now take a deep breath and exhale, pulling your stomach in. Repeat for five minutes and increase it to 15-20 minutes over time. Try it on an empty stomach each morning.
5. Bhujangasana
Lie down on your stomach and stretch your legs behind so your knees touch. Place your hands on the ground with palms facing down. Take a deep breath and slowly lift your upper body pulling your head, shoulders and chest upwards. Stretch your arms in front so the weight of your upper body falls on your hands and thighs. Hold for some time, exhale and return to the starting position. This 'cobra pose' cleans the digestive tract and soothes indigestion, constipation and acidity.
