Your 14 Week Old Baby - Development, Milestones & Care
It's been nearly three months since you gave birth to your baby, and we are sure that these three months must have been a bit tough for you. You must be still getting used to the new routine with your baby, yes even after 3 months. If your baby has turned 14 weeks recently, you will notice certain changes in him. As he grows, he will start showing that he has his own identity! From having a favourite toy to liking a specific song and looking forward to playing a game are all signs of individuality and you will notice these signs in your baby too.
Your 14-Week-Old Baby's Development
Around completion of three and a half months, your baby will begin to manifest as a person who likes to interact with other people or prefers to spend time with himself. These signs cannot tell whether he will grow up to be an introverted person or extroverted. Some babies prefer a quiet environment - they like to be by themselves or with only a bunch of people while others like to be surrounded by people. Your 14-week-old baby will learn a lot from his surroundings and his brain will process to make sense of it. Certain other aspects of the house will now begin to interest him a lot more and he will be eager to explore the entire space of the house.

Your 14-week-old Baby's Milestones
Below are a few 14-week-old baby milestones you can watch out for in your baby:
With an increased awareness of the limbs, your baby might like a particular hand or finger and keep exploring it. Usually, babies are enthralled by their own feet. Since they are unable to see them, they are curious when they lift their feet up high. When your little one lifts his feet up high, he might want to play around with them or put in his mouth.
The energy level of a baby is high during this time. Your baby will rarely stay still while lying down. He will constantly kick, play with his hands, or blow raspberries.
Your baby's back will gain quite some strength by this time.
His ability to understand that his actions can cause movement or changes in objects will be even stronger now. As with rattles, he will also know to play with the hanging flutes or with mobile screens if they were to lay their hands on one.
When you bring your face closer to him, he might reach out and touch your face and feel it.
Your little one's communication skills will develop too. He will begin to coo and gurgle by this time. Cooing and gurgling are sure to make you smile a lot.
Your baby will have a better idea of who can provide him with what he wants. So, if he’s hungry, he will start making loud sounds and try to look in your direction.
If a new person is introduced or a new toy is brought for him, he will take a long time to keep observing and exploring. He may not instantly be comfortable with the new person but he will want to touch her or feel her.

Feeding
Your baby is growing as he should and his schedule must be finally falling into place. But making strict schedules is not recommended if you have a baby. Your 14-week-old baby may want to be fed in the evening too when most of us tend to snack on something or the other. You will have to balance your own needs and the needs of other family members, along with a baby who suddenly wants to latch onto your breast for a quick snack. In such cases, you could keep breastmilk stored separately and engage either your husband or someone in the family to bottle feed your baby while you take care of the household chores. By this age, your baby may even want to play around or be engaged especially during this time. You can take your baby for a quick walk around the park as it will soothe him and keep him occupied.

Sleeping
By 14 weeks, your baby's sleeping pattern will not have fallen into a predictable schedule. He will wake up at night if and when he feels hungry. As your baby is growing and is trying different activities, he will need more energy, hence he will feed often. Hearing about other babies already sleeping through the night or having predictable sleep times can make you wonder if you are doing something wrong. But you must understand that each and every child has different physiology and different needs. One could want to sleep through the day and wake up at night while the other may remain awake during the day time and sleep through the night. In either case, there should be a period of time when the baby sleeps for a longer duration, which should not be interrupted since maximum growth occurs then.

Tips to Take Care of Your 14-week-old Baby
Here are some tips that you should follow to take care of your 14-week-old baby.
Your baby might take some more time to be able to do all the things that other babies do. Do not worry about it and let him progress at his own pace.
Certain babies might seem to depict a change in the colour of their irises. As long as this does not accompany redness in the eye and irritation in the child, it isn’t an infection and is just a normal sign.
Keep formula milk and breastmilk at hand so that it can be quickly mixed in the bottle and given to your child if you are too busy with something else.

Tests and Vaccinations
Following the previous week of vaccines, in the 14th week, there are another bunch of vaccines that need to be administered to a baby. Get your child administered all the necessary vaccines and on time, as these will keep him healthy and protect him from illnesses while boosting his immunity. The triple vaccine that takes care of diphtheria and polio will be administered too. This is the DPT/IPV/HIB vaccine.
Another vaccine that necessitates its presence is the PCV vaccine, which is at its 3rd time of administering to your child. Yet another one at its 3rd dosage is the rotavirus vaccine, which may be given orally this time around, too. All these vaccines might result in a slight fever in your child which is absolutely normal.
Games and Activities
Your baby’s upper body strength will be developed quite a bit and his neck muscles will be strong too. He may be able to keep his neck upright and look around for a longer time with ease. Hold your baby on the shoulder and fly him around the house while making whoosh and airy sounds. By holding in such a way that he faces backwards, the experience of going in a reverse direction could cause quite a riot and leave him laughing and giggling. If you are a fitness enthusiast and have a gym ball or a large inflatable ball, you can hold your baby and place him on it. Then gently roll the ball in various directions and let your little one sway and move slightly on each side.
Peek-a-boo is always successful with all babies no matter the age. And now that your baby can look around a bit, it is time to take the game to the next level. Keep your baby upright, supported with some pillows, and securely placed so that he won’t roll over. Let him face the hall or the room. You can then use all methods to hide and make sounds, only to pop out from a different corner and surprise him. Bending under the bed or hiding behind the sofa, and then emerging from the door or the other end of the sofa, will seem quite magical to your baby and make his day.

When to Consult a Doctor
As your child will be different vaccines around this time, chances are that he will have a slight fever. Fever is a side effect of vaccines and there is nothing to worry about. However, if the fever lasts long and is more than 100.5 degrees or so, you should consult a doctor. Furthermore, if your child is vomiting, you should consult a doctor immediately.
Also, if your baby has trouble holding things firmly or doesn’t seem to have any coordination in understanding how to hold a small toy or so, get a paediatrician to examine him for any developmental disorder or condition.
From this time onwards, your child will grow physically, emotionally, and socially. His personality will start forming too. Make sure you constantly encourage your child to try out new things. Keep a positive atmosphere at home and your child will be happy!

Fabric Conditioners for Babies – All You Need to Know
Your bundle of joy is small, delicate, and absolutely adorable - and the same adjectives can be used to describe her little onesies and dresses! Hence, throwing them in the washing machine with harsh detergents just won’t do, when it comes to laundry time. Infant clothes are just as dainty as their owners, which mean that you have to take special care while washing them.
How to Wash a Baby’s Clothes
The fabrics used in baby clothing are usually cotton, cotton-polyester blends, fleece - and even cashmere, if you’re looking for high-end options; and it’s absolutely vital to follow certain basic dos-and-don’ts while washing them.
Do’s
Follow the instructions that are mentioned on the clothes’ tag.
Ensure you disinfect cloth nappies after they are washed.
Choose a detergent paired with a mild and gentle fabric softener in every wash. Ensure that you run the clothes through the rinse circle twice.
Don’ts
Don’t delay cleaning stains. However busy your baby keeps you, ensure that you soak the stained clothes straight away, so that the stains become easier to remove.
Don’t use bleach to clean your baby’s white clothes.
Don’t mix your baby’s clothes in with the rest of your family’s laundry in the washing machine, unless you’ve switched to a mild detergent.
Don’t dress her up in new clothes, unless they’ve been washed first. The clothes would have been stored in boxes for days together, and dust and dirt could easily have settled on it.
Similarly, clothes are sometimes sprayed with chemicals to preserve their freshness, and you don’t want your baby’s skin exposed to such chemicals! Pre-washing clothes becomes essential to avoid this situation.
What Happens if the Baby’s Clothes Are Not Washed Right?
As tiny as your little one is, her clothes may be the ones that pile up fastest in your laundry basket. If your little one’s laundry is not done right, her clothes and her skin will definitely make it visible. Therefore, it’s imperative you make the right choices, whether it’s the way her clothes are washed or what they are washed with.
Using detergents with bleach and chemicals can reflect on your baby’s skin as rashes, which can be severe in some cases. Similarly, washing cloth diapers with the rest of her clothes is not a hygienic or safe option. Itchy and rough textures that arise because of careless washing are a complete no-no, because it can irritate your baby’s delicate skin.
Fabric Conditioners for Baby Clothes
A comfortable baby is definitely a happy baby! Soft and gentle textures guarantee your baby the comfort she deserves, which is why using a fabric conditioner for her clothes is important.
How Are Fabric Conditioners Different from Detergents?
Consider shampoo and hair conditioners - shampoo rids the hair of dirt and other impurities, but the softness and shine of your hair can only be maintained by using a conditioner. The same logic applies to these laundry essentials. Detergents clean clothes by removing all the grime and stains that have been accumulated on them (which, in your baby’s case, will be a lot!) and can be bio or non-bio in nature. Non-bio detergents do not contain the presence of enzymes, which is why it is suitable to use on baby clothes, as enzymes can trigger allergies on sensitive skin.
A conditioner, on the other hand, smooths out the fibres of the clothes, making them soft and comfortable - like a cuddly hug!
Why Use Fabric Conditioners?
Using a fabric conditioner for baby clothes keeps the cloth fibres smooth, so that clothes feel gentle to the touch. Apart from keeping clothes soft and fuzzy, it presents the following advantages too:
Saves drying time for your wash load: This is because the conditioner’s formulation basically prevents the clothes from holding too much water while washing them.
Reduces wear and tear of clothes: Fabric conditioners can help to tame the movement of fibres in clothes. This means that it reduces the friction within the fabric that happen when the fibres rub against each other, which result in those stray threads and bobbles on your baby’s outfits.
Enhances breathability of clothes: Fabric conditioners prevent the damaging and matting of fibres, which are the causes for moisture getting locked in. Instead, it opens up the fabric structure and lets your baby’s skin breathe freely!
Helps in caring for the colour of clothes: It isn’t just the loss of dye that can make your baby’s bright outfits look dull after a few washes. Damage to fibres or fuzzing of clothes also diminish the colour and quality of the clothes, which can be prevented by using a conditioner.
How to Use Fabric Conditioners
To get the best use out of your fabric conditioner, follow these simple tips while washing the baby’s clothes:
Wipe off any stains that are clumpy, because these can soak into the fibre and stain clothes permanently.
Rinsing stains immediately in cold water will prevent them from ‘setting’.
If you’re washing clothes in the machine, pour in the detergent and conditioner in their designated compartments. Depending on your washing machine, you can probably add the conditioner right in the beginning (and the machine will release it during the final rinse cycle), or you’ll have to manually add it towards the end of the washing cycle.
Ensure that the conditioner is diluted and use small amounts. If you’re hand-washing the clothes, mix in a small amount of conditioner in a bucket full of water, ensure that it has dissolved well, and rinse the clothes in this solution.
Things to Consider While Choosing a Fabric Conditioner for Baby Clothes
While choosing a product, it’s important to note that it is baby-skin-friendly. Pick a fabric conditioner which is:
Mild and gentle, and can be combined with a non-bio detergent.
Dermatologically tested and approved.
Suited for the baby’s sensitive skin.
Very lightly fragrant.
A non-dye formula.
Your little one deserves nothing but love and happiness, especially in her early stages. Ensure that she remains comfortable wherever she goes and whatever she does!

Who's Hubby's First Confidant: You or His Mom?
Husbands sometimes choose their mother over their wife - a very commonplace occurrence happening in every other woman's life. Your mother-in-law meddles in your affairs and dominates decisions taken by your hubby. Some moms-in-law can be highly opinionated and overall a concern for your married life. Now, what do you do?
Your mother-in-law lives in a different city, but comes visiting often. From far and near alike, she ends up being the person your hubby confides in before you. What do you do when your hubby still confides just in his mom even after years of marriage? Take heart, there's a solution for all that strife.
What Happens When Husband Chooses Mother over Wife?
1. Tell your husband he cannot sideline you
It’s incorrect if your hubby shuts you out when he's talking to his mother in private. The discomfiting feelings that follow, especially when he talks at length to her about things he chooses not to discuss with you, can raise concerns. This secrecy can make things turn from bad to worse. These are the times when you should solicit a serious discussion with your man.
2. Be glad someone is “all ears”
In some cases, it’s good that the husband tells everything to his mom than the wife; at least he has a confidant in his life! Pent-up emotions and bottled up negativities are disasters in waiting and are best got rid off at the earliest. If you think from a different and fresh perspective, you would know that you're benefitting too. So, take a step back and try to accept that sometimes, there’s nothing incorrect about a married son sharing it all with his mom.
3. Psychological support or over-dependence in decision making?
Analyze carefully. Is your hubby gaining support for his important decisions through long discussions with his mom? Are those decisions reaping good results? If yes, then it’s absolutely okay to take suggestions from his mom but the final decision has to be taken by both of you, as a couple. Any level of over dependence on the points discussed in your absence should not make you unhappy—if it does it’s not worth the cause. At the end of the day, you both have to live with each other, right?
4. Is there any conflict of interest?
In case of any conflicting interests, he should avoid taking sides with his mother and putting your wishes on the back burner. Remember, a psychological break from parents is the need of the hour at this point of life to estimate a marriage’s full potential. However, this does not mean that he behaves unkindly or arrogantly with his mother.
Harmony and freedom are important in all in-law relationships. Here, your hubby and you need to discuss things mutually and then lay down the lines for all others, including your mother-in-law. With sound thought processes and a cordial approach to current (and future situations) in place, you'll get to handle her presence in better ways. Read more

Sensitivity To Sound in a 12 Months Old
A sensitive to sound 12-month-old baby needs your care and comfort. Some toddlers have strong reactions to loud noises like fire alarms, barking dogs, fire crackers, sirens etc. Even prolonged loud noises such as the volume at a typical movie hall can be too much for some toddlers to take.
For many young children, loud noise can be painful and uncomfortable because their ears are still developing. Parents should maintain a list of any specific sounds that irritate their child and share it with caregivers, teachers, grandparents etc. Here are a few things you can do to minimise the discomfort caused by loud sounds to your baby.
Toddler Sensitivity to Sound Developmental Milestone - What You Can Do
1. Block the noise
If your child is sensitive to loud sounds, the first thing you should try and do is to try and block the sound. Use earmuffs or ear plugs; these are quite easily available in the market. You can also buy noise reduction headphones to muffle the sounds. Soundproofing your toddler’s room can enable her to slowly get acclimatized to loud noises.
2. Help your child accommodate not escape it
Unless you want your child to be sitting at home all the time, you can never truly avoid putting your toddler in situations where she is exposed to loud sound. Instead, you can take frequent breaks from the noise with your toddler. You can go out for short walks to take a break from the noise or sit in a separate room for some time. This will also help your toddler get gradually more used to general everyday noises and loud sounds.
3. Preparation is key
Talk to your child in advance about whatever unpleasant sounds she may face before going out for an event. This will help her mentally prepare for sounds such as loud music, firecrackers, or whatever else that can unpleasant for her. Explain to her that you're there to keep her safe.
4. Be patient
Most importantly, both the parents and the toddler need to be patient. As your child grows older, she will become less sensitive to sounds and will get better at coping with loud sounds and noises. All you need to do is to be patient and help her accommodate sounds on her own.
5. Reassure
Don't force your child to stay in a loud situation that will obviously cause her stress. Move her away from such a situation if possible. Reassure and comfort her, so that she knows you're there for her and that it'll be alright soon.
6. Introduce some white noise
For some children with sound sensitivity issues, white noise in the background helps soften the impact of loud and annoying sounds, like car horns and loud music. A fan or a white noise machine in your child’s room may help her sleep and focus better in her play time.
There is no surgical treatment for sound sensitivity in toddlers, but generally, as children grow older their tolerance to increased volume of sound increases too. Don't overuse earphones or ear plugs as it'll increase your child's sensitivity to sound, making her inadept at accommodating to normal sounds. Read more

Diwali Layi Khushiyaan Hi Khushiyaan! (How I Met My Love in Diwali)
During the festive season of Diwali we had a rangoli competition in our housing society. l was super excited to participate in the contest and went with a handful of dry colours and decorative diyas with my friends. We were all given a theme for the rangoli contest. We were all set for the competition and started making our rangolis rangoli making suddenly a young dude approached us to borrow some colours for his rangoli.
At first, we hesitated a little. We wondered whether we should give our material to this stranger. But one aunty who had also come to enjoy the rangoli competition said, "We should spread happiness and love with everyone, especially on Diwali!"
So we gave this dude our colours and he made his best rangoli designs with it. When the most awaited moment came and the winner was announced, it turned out to be the guy we had helped! We were happy for him. He thanked us and asked me for my number.
As the days went by, we started talking regularly and became good friends. And as we got to know each other more and more, I realized he is the perfect man for me and married him. Whenever I make rangoli on Diwali I always remember this moment and cherish it.

A. Generally, if your baby weighs over 4.5kg at birth, they are considered large. This is also known as 'fetal macrosomia' and 'large for gestational age (LGA)'. If your baby weighs less than 2.5kg at birth when at term (after 40 weeks of pregnancy), they may be considered smaller than normal.
