What is Baby-wearing?
Babywearing involves carrying or wearing the baby in a sling or a baby carrier. It is a practice that helps you keep your baby as close as possible while you engage in your day to day activities. It is a traditional practice that is slowly making its way into the modern society. Today, we do not only see mums wearing their babies but dads have joined the bandwagon too.
Benefits of Babywearing
The benefits of wearing your baby are many and the most obvious benefit is convenience. If your baby is with you, you can easily finish your daily tasks without worrying if your baby is safe or not. Also, you can easily take your baby to many places where prams and strollers cannot go, like stairs, escalators etc.
Apart from these, there are several other benefits that babywearing offers. Some of them include:
Supports breastfeeding: When you hold your baby close, you will be able to understand the signs of hunger more easily. Some carriers are designed to enable you to breastfeed your child while in the carrier. This results in less crying and crankiness in general. It makes your more aware of your baby’s needs and that helps in developing a closer bond between you and your baby.
Say goodbye to crying: While your baby will not stop crying completely, the frequency will drastically reduce. It is believed that carried babies cry and fuss less.
Help to avoid cranial and spinal deformities: Babies who spend a lot of time in baby swings and car seats run the risk of developing cranial and spinal deformities. When you carry your baby properly, it allows for the proper formation of the postural muscles, spine, and cranium.
Babies learn to regulate physiological functions properly: Babies who spend a lot of time close to their mothers are able to regulate their physiological functions like heart rate, breathing rate, and body temperature better.
Improves physical and emotional development of the baby: Wearing your baby in a carrier will help in improving your baby’s IQ as they are calm and can take in their surroundings better. Long term benefits include good health, psychological independence and security.
Babywearing adds to tummy-time: Tummy-time helps in the emotional and physical development of the baby. It teaches them to keep their head high, grasp things that are important for developing motor skills, and also helps them observe their surroundings.
Emotional development: Babies develop a strong sense of trust and security when they are carried. They bond with the caregiver and they are also more likely to become independent at a younger age
Enhances learning abilities: When you are carrying your baby, your baby is spending a lot of time in the ‘alert’ and ‘quiet’ state—something required to learn new things. Many studies claim that babies who are worn have better auditory and visual alertness as compared to other babies. Many studies also show that speech development is more advanced in carried babies as they are exposed to adult conversations
Prevents flat-head syndrome: Over usage of equipment like car swings, bouncy seats, and baby swings suffer from the flat-head syndrome, also known as plagiocephaly. You can prevent this by wearing your baby and avoiding putting a lot of pressure on the back of your baby’s small head. Wearing babies promotes their natural head development.
When to Start Babywearing?
You can begin babywearing right from the first day your baby is born. Baby wearing wraps and slings are perfectly suitable for the new-borns. You can keep using them as your baby grows and becomes a toddler.
Types of Baby Carriers
Baby carriers are of different types. While some baby carriers can be made at home, most types are commercially available. Let’s look at some of the most commonly used baby carriers:
Babywearing Slings
This is probably the most commonly used baby carrier. It consists of a long piece of sturdy cloth that you need to wear over one of your shoulders and around your torso.
This is the best choice for the newborns as smaller babies can easily lie on the fabric. As far as larger babies are concerned, the sling will function as a hip carried seat for them and they can sit in it. You can also use a sling as a back carrier for your baby and this is an absolutely safe thing to do.
Slings are commercially available as well and they can be padded or non-padded. Some even come with rings for adjustment.
Babywearing Wraps
A babywearing wrap usually goes over both your shoulders and around your torso. It consists of one long piece of fabric and comes in varied lengths. You can use this to carry your baby on your back or on the front. This can also be used as a hip carrier. Wraps are among the simplest options you have but it might take you some time to get adjusted to them.
Soft-structured Carriers
These carriers are made of padded materials and are very soft. The soft padded fabric is sewn on a more structured seat that comes with buckles and two shoulder straps. These are more ergonomic than the others and are perfectly suitable for outdoor activities. You can use these as back and front carriers. These are more convenient to use as well.
Mei Tais
These carriers are also soft bodied and come with shoulder straps and a tie waist. This is the traditional Chinese baby carrier that consists of a rectangular cloth with straps coming from all the corners. The carriers are commercially available and you can use them both as a back and as a front carrier. They can be used as hip carriers too and can easily be customised.
Pouches
These carriers consist of a piece of fabric that forms a pouch for the baby to sit in. They come with a single shoulder strap. A pouch is your best choice if you are looking for something compact and something that you can wear easily.
Ring Slings
Ring Slings are one-shouldered carriers. A piece of cloth is passed through rings to make one. A ring sling is used for the hip to tummy or tummy to tummy carries. Ring slings are compact too and are an ideal choice for busy mothers
Things to Consider While Choosing a Baby Carrier
Choosing a baby carrier is not difficult. However, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind. They are:
Comfort for you and your baby
Positioning of the baby
You need to ensure that you are comfortable while wearing your baby and your baby is comfortable too. Remember, that there will be days when you may have to wear your baby for multiple hours and so make sure that the carrier you opt for is comfortable.
Also, it is convenient if you can fix the carrier so that it adjusts to another caregiver, be it your husband or anyone else who takes care of your baby. Try and choose a carrier that can be adjusted to accommodate the size of the other caregiver.
Further, you need to decide whether you want a carrier to suit your baby’s current stage or also plan to use it when he grows up. As your baby’s weight increases, you will need more back support, so keep that in mind while looking for a carrier. Opt for one that can accommodate higher weights.
To sum up, here are some tips that you need to keep in mind:
Types: Now that you already know what the different types of baby carriers are, it is important that you choose the one which best suits your purpose. Try out a few of the available options to know which type suits you and your baby the best.
Your comfort: Buy carriers that come with well-padded and wide straps and sturdy fabric so that your baby’s weight gets distributed evenly. This will prevent your shoulders, neck, and back from getting strained. There will be times when you will have to share the carrier with another caregiver. So, invest in one that can easily and properly be adjusted. The structured carriers usually come in both regular and XL sizes for plus-sized parents.
Your baby’s comfort: In the case of front carriers, you need to look for carriers with padded leg holes that offer enough space for your baby’s thighs. However, the leg holes should not be very loose, as your baby might slip through them. Your baby might want to sleep in the carrier too, and it makes sense to look for a carrier that comes with a padded headrest
Sturdy: If you are opting for a front carrier, make sure the one you choose comes with straps and a seat that would support your baby securely. The belts and buckles should be durable and should be in proper working condition
Convenient: The carrier should be easy to use and adjust. You should be able to put your baby inside and take him out easily, without anybody’s help
Nursing-friendly: Do you want to nurse your baby while wearing him? It is easier to nurse your baby in a wrap or a sling as compared to front structured carriers
Weather-appropriate: If you are living in a tropical country, the carrier should be made from light fabric. Avoid dark-coloured carriers as they heat up easily
Easy to clean: Babies are messy, so opt for a carrier that you can easily clean
Risky Baby Carriers
Avoid forward-facing baby carriers and carriers where the baby’s legs dangle. These types of carriers do not support the correct posture, and can cause hip dysplasia.
If you are opting for outward-facing carriers, do not use them too often. You will find it very difficult to obtain the correct position in the case of an outward-facing carrier. It is also not a very safe option for an overstimulated infant. Also, your baby might face difficulty if the baby falls asleep in an outward-facing carrier.
An outward-facing carrier will put a lot of unnecessary strain on your back as the baby will be dangling from your body and you would not be able to carry the baby for a long time.
How Safe is Babywearing?
Babywearing is absolutely safe and there is nothing you need to worry about. Make sure you go through the manufacturer’s safety guidelines before using one. Apart from that, there are a few other tips that you need to keep in mind, which have been listed below.
Tips to Carry Your Baby Safely
Keep in mind the following babywearing tips in mind while wearing your baby:
Make sure that your baby’s airway is clear. The baby should not be in a position where you have to remove the fabric to see his face. Your baby’s chin should not be resting on his chest. It should be tipped up. His face also should not be pressing against your chest. Ideally, his ears should be against your chest.
The carrier should be such that the baby stays in an upright position or the way you hold your baby yourself. Of course, this is not applicable when you are nursing your baby. While nursing your baby, you can hold the baby in the cradle position, but make sure to bring him back to the upright position after feeding is over.
Wear your newborn baby in a tummy to tummy position. The legs can be in or out and this depends on the carrier you have chosen. If you have a chosen a carrier when the baby’s feet need to be inside, ensure that his weight is not his feet but on her bum.
Practicing is important so that you get used to it. Practice close to the ground or over a soft surface till you become confident of carrying the baby around.
It is important to check the carrier for signs of damage on a regular basis.
Also, learn how to position the baby in the correct way. The knees of your baby should be positioned higher than his bottom and her legs spread—this will help in the proper development of the baby’s spine and hips. You can wear your newborn in the cradle position but ensure that his face is high and visible.
Toddlers and older infants need proper support, as they are riding their legs out. The carrier should be such that the baby’s knees are placed slightly above his bum.
If your baby was born premature or was born with a low weight, consult the doctor first before wearing him.
Whether you are using a wrap or a sling, make sure to check on your baby periodically. He should not be in the curled-in position nor should his face be pressed against the fabric. This can lead to suffocation and that can happen in a few minutes.
Position your baby in such a way that you are able to see your baby’s face and your baby is able to see you as well.

What Does Age Recommendation Labels on Toys Mean?
When considering toys to buy for your little one, you are going to want to be prepared rather than running around the aisle buying things at random. Age recommendation labels are meant for parents and those who wish to buy presents for your little ones. They are based on the following:
Guidelines for safety
Very good knowledge of child development
Observations made based on children of certain age groups playing with certain toys
History of toys that are similar
Information from parents whose children have played with the toys.
Safety Tips for Babies
Though toy companies usually mention the age recommendations on their toy boxes, it does not mean that you can just leave your little one alone. There are always safety measures that you need to undertake in order to have safe play time with your little one.
Do not ignore the age recommendation labels on toys; instead, pick them according to the age and skill level of your child.
Pay attention to other information such as “flame resistant” or “washable.”
Discard plastic wrapping to avoid choking.
Choose toys that are lightweight, colourful, and do not have any toxic paint or materials on them, as children like to put things in their mouths at this age.
Make sure there are no small removable parts. like the eyes and noses on stuffed toys.
Make sure there are no sharp edges or materials like glass or metal as these can injure your little one.
Do not leave any toys that have strings or cords around your baby’s crib or while your baby is left unsupervised as they can pose a strangulation threat.
Throw away any broken toys.
Always supervise your child while he play with his toys.
How to Help Your Baby Learn While Playing?
Here are some ways that you can help your baby learn while playing:
Use a roller to help keep his upper body elevated so that he can look around, and do keep an eye on him during this time.
While playing with building blocks, stacking toys, and puzzles, you can talk to your child about the shape, colour, and how to play with them. You will encourage your child to think and learn to use his problem-solving skills.
Gently roll a ball to your baby to give him a bit of a physical work out. He will use his motor skills and learn how to catch a moving object. If the ball doesn’t quite reach him, he may be encouraged to crawl to it.
Hide a rattle behind your back and shake it, so that your baby will start to understand that just because he cannot see it, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t still exist.
Sing nursery rhymes such as 'Old McDonald' to help teach him about animals and the sounds they make. You can make it even more fun by using stuffed animal toys or by showing colourful pictures of the animals.
You can encourage early role play by taking him around the house and allowing him to do things such as turn the lights on and off, or perhaps ring the doorbell.

Reasons for Thirst During Pregnancy and Tips to Deal With It
Pregnant or not, you might feel sudden thirst and the urge to drink plenty of water at times during the day. Usually, people say that drinking eight glasses of water is the norm, but pregnant women may need to drink a little more than that. However, feeling excessively thirsty while you’re pregnant might still need looking into. Here, we will talk about whether this phenomenon is normal and whether you need to tell your doctor about it or not.
Is it Normal to Feel Extremely Thirsty During Pregnancy?
For most women, increased thirst during pregnancy is entirely normal. Your body simply needs more fluids to function properly. Also, you’re drinking water not only for you but for the little one inside you as well. However, it is understandable for you to wonder whether it is a normal part of pregnancy or due to some underlying medical cause. Let's explore more, below.
Causes of Excessive Thirst During Pregnancy
Here are some factors that can lead to you feeling excessively thirsty during pregnancy:
1. Low Blood Pressure
Around the time when you are 24 weeks pregnant, it is normal to experience a dip in blood pressure. When this happens, your heart has to work more to pump more blood. This will contribute to increased thirst. There are also a few other symptoms you may experience with this dip in blood pressure, including feeling faint, nausea, dizziness, blurry vision, and breathing abnormalities.
2. Increase in Blood Volume
Pregnancy can increase the volume of blood in your body by about 40 percent. Your body will need this extra amount of blood to provide your baby with nutrients and oxygen and ensure proper cell development. To replenish this additional need for blood, your body will need more water, thereby, increasing thirst levels.
3. Certain Foods or Drinks
When you eat salty food or food with lots of spices, you may become thirsty all of a sudden. If you find yourself feeling excessively thirsty after eating or drinking certain things, it's best to avoid them for some time.
4. Not Being Hydrated Enough
Most women often find themselves feeling the need to pee more often during pregnancy. You will likely feel more thirsty in the earlier stages of pregnancy, as your body is telling you to take in more fluids for yourself and your baby. As your baby grows in your womb, the amniotic sac (fluid-filled chamber protecting your baby) grows larger as well. Your body needs more fluids to help rid itself of waste produced from your normal functions, as well as waste being produced by your baby. Some women, especially ones who live in warmer climates, will find that their thirst is due to more sweating.
5. Pressure on the Bladder
As the baby continues to develop and grow, your womb will expand and start to press down on your bladder, causing the urge to urinate more frequently and drink more fluids. As you expel more fluids, your thirst will increase.
Symptoms of Excessive Thirst During Pregnancy
The main symptom of excessive thirst during pregnancy is suddenly or constantly feeling dehydrated and needing to drink water. Other symptoms include-
• Have a feeling of dryness in the mouth
• Swelling of hands, feet, or ankles
• Needing to urinate more frequently
How to Deal With Extreme Thirst During Pregnancy
Increased thirst during pregnancy can be frustrating, as it means constantly feeling thirsty and in need of water. Most pregnant women need to drink eight to ten glasses of water or other fluids each day. If you are physically active or live in a warm climate, it will be more. It can also be all the more difficult If you are coping with nausea and morning sickness. Here are some tips to tackle excessive thirst during your pregnancy –
Sip on lemon water to reduce nausea and vomiting and still get the required fluid intake.
Suck on ice chips, popsicles and other frozen treats throughout the day to help increase fluid intake without getting a stomach upset.
Reduce salt in your diet to avoid feeling thirsty so often.
Eat more fruits and vegetables with high water content.
• Sometimes you may be so busy that you forget to drink enough water, contributing to increased thirst. Install an app on your computer or phone that reminds you to drink water at regular intervals throughout the day.
• Drinking water is important, but drinking too much can also prove to be harmful. So, regulate the amount to what your doctor recommends.
When You Should Be Concerned About Excessive Thirst During Pregnancy
It is best to talk to your doctor to ensure that excessive thirst during pregnancy is due to normal reasons and not any cause for concern. When you reach later stages of pregnancy, you should be very careful while analysing your symptoms. Your increased thirst level could be due to the uterus putting pressure on your bladder, making you urinate more frequently. This can happen more in the latter part of pregnancy, as compared to the earlier part. Your body needs to replenish the rapid loss of fluids. However, the above may also point to start of gestational diabetes, especially if you feel constant fatigue along with urinating frequently.
The doctor may insist on a blood sugar test, also known as a glucose tolerance test if she suspects that you have gestational diabetes. If your numbers are higher than 140mg/DL, you may be at risk of developing gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes is very common during pregnancy, as when you are pregnant, your body has to produce more insulin to keep up with all the changes. If your body is not able to produce the right amount of insulin required, you may develop gestational diabetes.
If you had gestational diabetes during an earlier pregnancy, the chances of developing it in your current pregnancy are higher. Make sure you tell your doctor about previous cases of gestational diabetes, so the appropriate measures can be taken.
While this condition may be serious, it can be treated smoothly if caught early on. Warning symptoms of gestational diabetes are –
• Urge to urinate frequently, especially at night.
• A feeling of dryness in the mouth.
• Feeling excessively tired, even if you have slept well.
• Impaired vision.
• Infections that happen too often, like thrush.
Foods That Keep You Hydrated During Pregnancy
When it comes to staying hydrated during pregnancy, drinking too much water may make you feel bloated. Instead, incorporate these foods into your pregnancy diet to add to your water intake and reduce the need to gulp down glasses of water.
1. Cucumber
Cucumbers have a 95% water content, and are the perfect crunchy accompaniment to meals, or can be eaten alone as a snack. You can even incorporate cucumbers into a salad or have long slices of cucumber with a dip.
2. Watermelon
Known for their high water content, watermelons are recommended to anyone facing dehydration or low hydration. These taste great and keep you feeling hydrated throughout the day.
3. Muskmelon
Another melon with a high water content, muskmelons are a great choice if you’re looking for something that isn’t too sweet, yet hydrates you. Cut cubes of muskmelon and store them in the refrigerator for an instant snack, every time you feel hungry or thirsty.
4. Curd
Curd has high water content and also boosts protein and calcium intake. You can even make a glass of buttermilk for more hydration. Go easy on the salt, though.
5. Lettuce
Another crunchy delight, lettuce has high water content and tastes great in salads, with dips, or by itself. A definite win-win.
There is no reason to worry if you experience excessive thirst during pregnancy, as it is usually normal. To ease your mind as well as eliminate any underlying medical cause, speak with your doctor and follow her advice properly.

We are in 21st century, and we mothers also know that earning for family is also that important, after all working moms are working for their baby and family. I am not saying than what fathers for, in this century if both are working then it is easier to run a family. And there is nothing bad about it. Few moms choose to leave their career also and stay at home to look after their baby, but what happen with our working moms, how they can take care of their baby while continuing their job. Isn't it difficult? Here are some tips on how you can take care of your baby with your job.
1 Stay organised.
Firstly you have to organise your self, means your mind. As now after your maternity leave you are joining your work. So be prepared for that. We moms know that after having baby there are many works to do because with self and family now we have to handle a baby and on that Office. Staying organised, keeping things on its proper place, and planning in mind which after what will help you to do your work faster.
2 Make a to do list
By now you must know what are the work for baby you have to do before leaving home. So you can make a list so that you will not forget anything. Weather its pumping your breast milk and storing or preparing food for your little champ and etc. You can do some of your household work at night after your baby fall asleep so that in the morning there will be less stuff to do and you not need to rush.
3 Day care or a family member
Obviously a small baby cannot live at home alone. I personally advise to take help from your family member someone you can trust. So that you can leave home for office with peace. But in case if that is not possible choose a day care which is near by your work place. So that you can see your child when needed by this your travel time to your child will reduce. A. I think it would be advisable for you to get an ultrasound done with your doctor that’s going to give you a clarity because if there is a pregnancy it would be visible at least at least that sack is visible if it’s a regular pregnancy so it would be advisable to have a test with your doctor

A. Hello there ma’am please do not worry about it too much. But it is really very difficult to say anything without proper examination. It is advisable to get yourself evaluated by a gynaecologist and follow doctors advise properly. You can also book online doctor’s appointment on FirstCry where the doctor can guide you properly.
Thanks and take care
